Earth Hour

Earth Hour is this year being held on Saturday 27 March at 8:30pm. That otherwise sensible people can think that turning off their lights for an hour demonstrates their commitment to the fight against climate change shows the morphing into a religion is this cause.

And as the Canberra Times on 23 February demonstrated, it is symbolic. The article says that the ACT’s environment minister Simon Corbell said that Earth House was

more than a symbolic gesture.

Later in the article Corbell was quoted as stating:

Turning off lights for one hour is an important symbolic gesture to help protect the world from the threats of climate change …

So there you have it: Earth House isn’t a symbolic gesture, it’s an important symbolic gesture.

And finally we have it confirmed that the ACT government is a local council. By no less an authority than the WWF.

When Earth Hour arrives, I won’t be doing anything differently. I won’t be specially switching lights off, nor on.

  5. What better symbol of the environmental movement can you get? Sitting in the dark wasting your life when you could just take three steps to a light switch sums the whole movement up nicely. Take it to the next level and we’ll be throwing virgins into volcanoes to please Gaia.

  7. Last year I turn every light inside and out ON!

Will do so this year.. we are the luckiest country in the world with a super abundance of coal. and since coal has today only produces water vapour and CO2, we should bathe in it.

    OK.. shoot me

  9. Right on, Vince. We’ve got millennia worth of the black gear. We should have Light Hour wherein we celebrate the abundance of coal ‘n cake we enjoy in Australia by illuminating the whole continent.

  11. Go ahead Samuel. I just turned on mine in my office and I gotta tell you these flickers can sure put out the light and heat. There’s six of them. In the summer they run so hot at times that I need the Ac to just cool the room… a real tribute to green….. turn on the ac when when the lights are on.

  12. Yes, I’d better crank up the AC too. And light a cigar while I’m at it. Whilst running the car to charge its battery – all lights blazing. And I’ll have all my gas burners on full power heating up water – since water vapour is such a great greenhouse gas. And since I’ve got my AC on so high, I’ve now got to turn on the heater because it’s getting pretty damn cold.

  14. Damn, I can’t do that, Samuel as the freaking heating/A/c is on one switch and doesn’t do both.

Here, I just put the AC down to 16 and opened the door to let out the cold air and help cool “the planet”. In fact if people are so concerned with short term AGW they should always have the AC on and the windows open.. for the sake of ‘the planet”

  15. Well, JC, you’ll be pleased to know at work I have the AC set to 19ºC (as I like to say, my people come from snow-covered peaks and seal-grey skies – I wasn’t built for heat!). If people complain they’re cold I tell them to do what everyone else does: open the door to the 35 degree heat outside until they’ve warmed up.
