In a civilized society it is indeed not so much the greater knowledge that the individual can acquire, as the greater benefit he receives from the knowledge posssessed by others, which is the cause of his ability to pursue an infinitely wider range of ends than merely the satisfaction of his most pressing physical needs. Indeed, a ‘civilized’ individual may be very ignorant, more ignorant than many a savage, and yet greatly benefit from the civilization in which he lives.

A gentleman and ..and a busy one. I can remember reading lengthy New Statesman articles by the guy even when he was Opposition leader. I’m aware he was also writing whole books (biographys) while shadow boxing with Maggie. Goes to show what a different place the old Dart is eh? Unless the mad Monk is furiously scribling a manuscript while Outback.

What Foot will be best remembered for in India is his support given to Indira Gandhi when she suspended democracy, jailed the opposition and imposed a “State of Emergency” for a brief period. She then restored democracy, only to be thrashed in the following elections (she was only the second prime minister in history to lose her own constituency). But Foot’s closeness to the unwavering democrat Nehru blinded him to the faults of Nehru’s daughter.
