John Roskam in the SMH

The SMH has a profile of John Roskam.

His CV is a classic think tank mix of law, commerce, academia and politics, plus a stint at global mining company Rio Tinto. Indeed, it was a fellow law student at Melbourne University, John Daley – who now leads the Grattan Institute – who suggested that Roskam apply for his first job at the Liberal Party, as a junior research assistant for Victorian MP Don Hayward.

  1. Is this a bio, or an excerpt out of a gossip column?

Man oh man Gina has some work to do cleaning up this mess.

  2. “Right wing is Pauline Hanson.”

I thought Roskam was meant to be smart? Hanson is a lefty.

  3. IT my thoughts exactly. It really depends if you define ‘right wing’ as capitalist, free markets (Roskam), or nationalistic/racist (Hanson). The lefties deliberately lump these two completely different philosophies into one to try and discredit anyone who disagrees with them on anything as the ‘evil right’.

Personally I think the second defintion is invalid, and would say Hanson has more in common with Clive Hamilton or Lee Rhainnon than she does with the likes of Roskam or Chris Berg. Happy Hamilton or Rhiannon would do their blocks to hear this but consider what they have in common:

    - pro big government
    - Xenophobic / bigoted (against Muslims and Asians in one case, against Jews, Americans and white people in the other. Though the Greens are also xenophobic of non-whites when it comes to free trade)
    - support extensive government intervention in the economy (Hamilton/Rhiannon goes without saying, but Hanson is a big protectionist too)
    - want zero net immigaration and only certain races let in (Hanson wants only whites, Hamilton only non-white asylum seekers)

Roskam should happily embrace the term ‘right wing’ (maybe qualify it as the ‘free market right’ or ‘libertarian right’), then point out how all those BNP / Pauline Hanson typers are really lefties.

Either that or get right of ‘left-right’ altogether and redefine it as ‘libertarian – statist’, lumping Hanson in with Happy Hamilton.

  4. “which he has lead since 2005″

It’s a sad day when a journalist in a major newspaper doesn’t know the past tense of ‘lead’ is ‘led’.

That gets more respect from me than anything else. First the shock of twins, and then two years afterwards he wants another one!

  15. The sudden obsession with Gina Rhinehart’s private life – somthing that is supposed to be off limits for the purpose of commenting on journos and politicians – is looking increasingly like a pogrom.
On my way to work it was the first thing mentioned on the 7.45am ABC news, and on the way home it was the first thing mentioned by Walid Aly in his new spot on ABC RN at 6pm.
But somehow it’s no surprise. Anything goes in the war on conservatism.

  16. Some people’s generosity restores your faith in humanity ;)

    Moonlite BunnyRanch
At the Moonlite BunnyRanch, a legal brothel near Carson City featured in HBO’s “Cathouse” series, the most scantily- clad caucus of all was held two weeks ago.
Dennis Hof, 65, the proprietor and self-described “pimpmaster general” of the BunnyRanch and five other Nevada brothels, said he polled all 500 women to see who they supported for the presidency. Last time, they cast their support behind Barack Obama. This cycle their opposition to the roundups of wild horses on federal land near the brothel moved them to Paul.
He said they like Gingrich — they “don’t have a problem with him being a womanizer” — but they think Romney is too square. Paul’s support for states’ rights won them over, he said.
At the BunnyRanch, customers who say they are “Pimpin’ for Paul” get extra attention, Hof said, and some of the women ask clients for Paul donations. Many, like Hustler centerfold Cami Parker, 25, also donate tips.
“I really appreciate the fact that Ron Paul respects states’ rights and individual rights,” Parker said in a telephone interview. “It seems like he really understands our rights to do what we want.”

  19. Just don’t label Roskam – or the IPA – as “right-wing”. “If journalists describe the IPA as right wing, I email or ring them and ask them how is the IPA right wing?” he says. “Right wing is Pauline Hanson.”

Interesting given that I got a letter today from the IPA signed by John Roskam touting a speaking tour by Daniel Hannan and proudly quoting a description of Daniel as the “10th most influential right-winger in Britain in 2009″.

The IPA is right wing. It is nothing to be ashamed of. Although obviously it’s not that useful a description either. Why don’t they just describe themselves as libertarian and be done with it.

Which is why the Green / Socialist left goons took to the streets to ‘protest’ against Hanson. It was a turf war.
