Economic debate in 2012

I have an op-ed in The Drum that talks about the two approaches to economic policy in 2012. Both government and opposition want to talk about economics – very exciting for policy wonks, not so exciting for everyone else. But the bottom line is this:

Julia Gillard and Wayne Swan can huff and puff as much as they like about the Coalition’s economic plans being vague, they, however, are in government and actually have to perform. The pressure in 2012 is on them.

  1. lol… Why do you put yourself through it, Sink? The Drum, I mean – is it just because you like enraging all the lefties there? Fair enough, I suppose.

  3. Arthur Sinodinis tenders some good ideas, will he be given the industry ministry in the Abbott government? I hope so.

In policy terms, the economic priorities for the government this year are clear-cut. Achieving a surplus will sustain our international credit-worthiness and underpin the capacity of our banks to access foreign capital markets.

The quality of spending cuts will also be crucial. Accounting fudges to achieve a paper-thin surplus next year do not fool the markets. The composition of spending should also change with priority being given to measures that improve incentives to work and save as well as measures to reduce business costs.

The Review of the Fair Work Act should be revamped to include an assessment by the Productivity Commission of the implications of the act for productivity, flexibility and nurturing direct employer-employee workplace relations. Flexibility is not code for cutting wages; it is code for encouraging work practices that stimulate innovation, and win-win productivity deals that are tailored to the preferences of workers on such matters as work-life balance. Kevin Rudd once lauded evidence-based policymaking; it is time Labor applied that to building a consensus for change in labour relations.

  6. I think the issue of what the government does and the coalition being vague are somewhat separate. To me the real judge of whether the coalition is vague will be whether the general public cares about that or not.

The coalition is not vague at all.In fact it’s quite clear in major policies. They will

    1. Repudiate the destructive carbonic tax.

    2. Reverse the Shane Wand’s attempt at thieving from the miners.

    3. Fix the border issue.

    4. Fire 12,000 of Andrew Leigh’s constituency, with the possibility of more sackings down the road.

Those three points are good enough for me in the first three years and in fact I wouldn’t mind them closing the parliament down and they all went of vacation for the rest of the term.

  8. Well written article, Sinclair. Balanced and fair. Pity most of the readers have no comeback other than you’re an evil rightwing hack and spawn of the satanic IPA. Still, I’m sure you’ve gotten through to some.

  11. JC,

it’s the perception of the Coalition being vague, not whether they actually are or not. If people perceive them to be vague, and then see that as negative, then obviously that’s a problem for them. So is there a widespread feeling that they are vague and it matters? I tend to think there is but that it doesn’t matter for most people — the Labor party seems to be able to smear themselves enough (like they did in NSW) such that this is probably enough, although it could change.

  12. Conrad…

That’s just spin Labor learnt from Sussex street. I don’t believe that’s the perception at all and in fact I really haven’t seen them down in one poll since the last election. Last time looked the polls are suggesting the union Clerks and the Stalinist alliance will get a crushing.

I read the AFR that is delivered to my workplace each day. Though Stutch has made some changes, LaTingle and the muppets never let up attacking the economic credibility of the Coalition while they ignore the failings of the Liars Party.

They are claiming that after 2 good days in the chair as speaker, (from their view) Slipper is a wonderful guy and his defection is a disaster for Coaltion. Of course no mention of his expenses, that has been duly flushed down the memory hole as they were instructed.
