Keeping tabs on the Climate Commission

Gosh, they’ve been flat out over at the Climate Commission.  The last event was 9 November last year – in Alice Springs.  We really are getting value for money from all those Climate Commissioners.  Really educating the public on the intracies of climate change and computer modelling.

But fear not, there are two upcoming events in Tasmania (which might welcome bit of global warming given their current summer).

  • 21 February – Launceston

Australia’s Chief Climate Commissioner, Professor Tim Flannery, is visiting Tasmania. As a key regional city, Launceston will host the next community forum for the Climate Commission. This is your opportunity to ask questions and share ideas with the Climate Commissioners and take part in the national conversation on this vital issue.

  • 22 February – Hobart

Australia’s Chief Climate Commissioner, Professor Tim Flannery, is visiting Tasmania. As Australia’s southern-most city, Hobart will host a community forum for the Climate Commission. This is your opportunity to ask questions and share ideas with the Climate Commissioners and participate in the national conversation on this vital issue.

    Download the forum flyer.

So any Tasmanian Cats, here is your big chance.

In the meantime, the CC has put out a breathless report on the impact of climate change on health.  And here are the predictions (are we really expected to believe this stuff???)

The number of days over 35 degrees per year in Darwin:

2008            9

2030           36

2070          221

2100          312

Sure.  I guess the only certain outcome is that the Climate Commission will have been disbanded well before we can really know how hilariously wrong are these predictions.  Anyone for Sydney or Adelaide running out of water?

  1. Following standard climate science methodology, I can breathless predict that by 2120 there will be more than 365 days per year with temperatures over 35 degrees in Darwin. :-)

  4. They just need to switch to degrees Fahrenheit when giving these predictions.
By that measure, Darwin already has multiple days with temperatures above 100 degrees!
Now if that isn’t a climate catastrophe, I don’t know what is.

  6. So the man who famously predicted the end of Australian rainfall and the abandonment of Perth says he knows what the temperature will be in Darwin in the year 2100?

And he has a literature degree from La Trobe?

Has the Flannery-appointing ALP gone stark raving, clinically insane?

  9. pick a number any number

Yep, pretty much the case and yet there are millions out there who believe their numbers are accurate. People seem to have forgotten the definitions for “forecast” “prediction” and “modelling”. Nowadays these terms are taken to mean absolute fact.

Oh yea… I bet Tim Lambert still believes in the survey’s credibility. At the rate Lancet, that lunatic and idiot were compounding the death toll, the extra deaths count is up to 37.94 trillion Iraqis dead by now.

    Yea and yes.

He also said he couldn’t do a general science and had to do dinosaur shit “science” degree because he didn’t have a head for math. Funny how climate science is laden with math and he’s the glimate commissioner.

  12. As a post complaining about whether we are getting value for money from the climate commission, fair enough.

As a post throwing in a trivialising “well,ha, how likely is that?” it demonstrates the “I don’t care what scientists say, what do they know?” attitude that’s making a large part of the Right of politics here and in the States an embarrassment.

The issue with rate of loss of ice in the Himalayas, by the way, might be taken as a sign that scientists are genuine and honest in always revising their work on assessing the effects of climate change, rather than a reason to be pointing to them and say “haha, you got it wrong.”

It is, needless to say, but one aspect of the global effects of climate change and hardly makes a difference to the big picture.

  13. Has the Flannery-appointing ALP gone stark raving, clinically insane?

That’s their default position. They’ve gotten worse over time and they have to keep the Greenslimers happy.

  20. As I understand it, Darwin is located in the tropics, surrounded by ocean. As global mean temperatures rise, it will become increasingly “tropical”.

According to Wikipedia re tropical cities: “Average daily temperatures are typically at around 26.8°C (80.3°F) throughout the year. Extensive cloud cover and heavy rainfall prevent diurnal temperatures from rising much over 33°C (91.4°F.)”

Given this well known fact, it surprises me that the CC can continue to claim that Darwin will experience more and more days above 35 Deg. Where do they get this stuff from?

  21. The main point here is they are now guaranting a good payout and well paid remuneration for themselves by having their predictions of catastrophere so far out that when it does not not they would already have retired.
In the meantime they will always get extra funds for their research on important climate change reseaerch such as how CC will affect the Australian soldier or how CC will affect how quick cement dries.

  22. steve

    Heres a challenge for you.
Ask Mr Flannery which Indian coal company he works/advises for.

He will waffle about their enviro/solar efforts “for the poor”, but they are about as green as Al Gore.

Thats the one of the blokes heading our top greenhouse body.

Ps: Ive sent enquiries without an answer from his organisation, yet on ABC radio he mentioned it when asked the right question, but drowned the coal company info with a load of green bumf.

  23. Steve’s only defence of that as “science” is

Actually, I gave you a link to show that indeed CSIRO work is predicting a significantly dryer, hotter, drought prone Western Australia in the coming century, and that Flannery’s prediction is for serious problems developing for Perth in the coming decades.

He might be taking the “high end” of worse possible outcomes for the city, but he’s not talking out of his arse either.

To which spot feebly replied “Steve mentioned ‘science’”

Yes, how outrageous, I should mention science when rebutting facile criticism of Flannery.

  24. People kept focusing on the 180K comp, Flattery is receiving for being the head of the commission (commission Lol).

I keep reminding them that this is nothing compared to the carrots he’s after like board seats and advisory roles that will come from the $ 11 billion friends-of-mad-dog-bob bank.

    He’s after serious money.

  39. Bunyip suggests tactic if you happen to be attending the Flummery Fest:

Rather than calling Bone Man to account for his dud predictions, why not play his game and punch the climate alarm for all it’s worth? Stand up and sob for Gaia, make a real exhibition of yourself. Hog the microphone to fret and wail about the link between earthquakes and temperature. Insist that the ABC is hiding the truth about climate change, the grim reality being that the Mayan prophecies say this year will see the end of the world. Suggest wine corks be re-cycled to stopper flatulence in cows and humans, or swear blind you have proof of the Zionist Entity doctoring thermometers to hide the truth.

  41. I do tire of the dishonest, out of full context, quoting of Flannery’s “rain won’t fill the dams” answer from Lateline in 2007. Here it is in full:

SALLY SARA: What will it mean for Australian farmers if the predictions of climate change are correct and little is done to stop it? What will that mean for a farmer?

PROFESSOR TIM FLANNERY: We’re already seeing the initial impacts and they include a decline in the winter rainfall zone across southern Australia, which is clearly an impact of climate change, but also a decrease in run-off. Although we’re getting say a 20 per cent decrease in rainfall in some areas of Australia, that’s translating to a 60 per cent decrease in the run-off into the dams and rivers. That’s because the soil is warmer because of global warming and the plants are under more stress and therefore using more moisture. So even the rain that falls isn’t actually going to fill our dams and our river systems, and that’s a real worry for the people in the bush. If that trend continues then I think we’re going to have serious problems, particularly for irrigation.

The question was being asked at the height of the drought. His answer is qualified by talking about “initial impacts” and later by “if that trend continues”.

The reference to “the rain that falls” can at the very worst, be described as ambiguous. In context, however, I think it is extremely unlikely that you can fairly say he was arguing that floods and heavy rain would never happen again. It is contextually extremely likely reading that was referring to the “normal” levels of rain that would formerly fill a dam easily will not in the future do the job so readily. This is not a remarkable comment for much of Australia, given what the science is suggesting under AGW and climate change.

The dishonesty comes from Andrew Bolt continually only quoting the line

So even the rain that falls isn’t actually going to fill our dams and our river systems

as if there was no doubt at all as to what that means.

As for his warnings of cities running out of water: Brisbane got down to about 15% level, even with stringent water saving measures in place, trees and gardens dying all over the place, and with no certainty as to how far down you could really continue using the water. (Would it be usable water at 5%, say?)

This indeed was too close for comfort for a metropolitan area of over a million people.

  42. Give it up , Steve. No one takes you seriously. You are just a joke.
