It has been reported in the press many times that the issue of pollution is to be the next big crusade of the New Left activists, after the war in Vietnam peters out. And just as peace was not their goal or motive in that crusade, so clean air is not their goal or motive in this one.

Tony Windsor has threatened to push for an early election if Labor change leaders. Maybe he’s trying to claw back a bit of respect in New England so that he can walk the streets back home in relative safety when he’s dumped from Parliament, as he surely will be come the election.

Ten years ago I knew peeps in Tony Windsors electorate who thought he the walked on water. I wonder what they think him now. So so sad, the worst failure of the three. Oakshott and Wilkey were just flash in the pans….
In reality, this current situation will put people off voting for any independent in future, and that is a pity really.

Interesting you categorise and define yourself by occupation. But, no, ma’am. People will forever and increasingly tend to vote independent because educated people are by nature contrary and aspire to freedom. Such people don’t mind if they crash and burn. They expect it.

RESOLUTION EXPOSING UNITED NATIONS AGENDA 21
WHEREAS, the United Nations Agenda 21 is a comprehensive plan of extreme environmentalism, social engineering, and global political control that was initiated at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1992; and,
WHEREAS, the United Nations Agenda 21 is being covertly pushed into local
communities throughout the United States of America through the International Council of Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI) through local “sustainable development” policies such as Smart Growth, Wildlands Project, Resilient Cities, Regional Visioning Projects, and other “Green” or “Alternative” projects; and,
WHEREAS, this United Nations Agenda 21 plan of radical so-called “sustainable development” views the American way of life of private property ownership, single family homes, private car ownership and individual travel choices, and privately owned farms; all as destructive to the environment; and,
WHEREAS, according to the United Nations Agenda 21 policy, social justice is
described as the right and opportunity of all people to benefit equally from the resources afforded us by society and the environment which would be accomplished by socialist/communist redistribution of wealth; and,
WHEREAS, according to the United Nations Agenda 21 policy National sovereignty is deemed a social injustice; now therefore be
RESOLVED, the Republican National Committee recognizes the destructive and insidious nature of United Nations Agenda 21 and hereby exposes to the public and public policy makers the dangerous intent of the plan; and therefore be it further
RESOLVED , that the U.S. government and no state or local government is legally bound by the United Nations Agenda 21 treaty in that it has never been endorsed by the (U.S.) Senate, and therefore be it further
RESOLVED, that the federal and state and local governments across the country be well informed of the underlying harmful implications of implementation of United Nations Agenda 21 destructive strategies for “sustainable development” and we hereby endorse rejection of its radical policies and rejection of any grant monies attached to it, and therefore be it further
RESOLVED, that upon the approval of this resolution the Republican National Committee shall deliver a copy of this resolution to each of the Republican members of Congress, all Republican candidates for Congress, all Republican candidates for President who qualify for RNC sanctioned debates, and to each Republican state and territorial party office and recommend for adoption into the Republican Party Platform at the 2012 Convention.
As Approved by the Republican National Committee, January 13, 2012

Gab noted last few posts on Open Forum that Mary T and Bob both call IT ‘Tigga’ – which seems to suggest at least a liaison if not an outright identity between the two. Their writing pattern is very similar (trust me, I’m good at this) and their opinions co-incide. Bob even takes NZH to task for her housewifery! Sounds very much like a Quality Assurance Agent to me. She’s unable to resist getting in a bit of scolding political correctness for Wimmin (don’t you dare be a housewife) even when she’s being poor limp old Bob.
God knows what she was before Mary T; some Cats have ideas.
Mary T’s Keyboard, while we all share your pain, there is very little we can do. It is like Syria, or Coptic Egypt, or Libya, full of complexities and unspeakably bad things and we are but viewing from afar. I did suggest the ‘insert’ key might give the ‘enter’ key a rest, but you really should just haul down your ‘delete’ key on anything her fingers touch. It would be a public service, and she claims to have had many years experience of this, so she probably will not demur, if only through force of habit. Like many brave soldiers, you must realise you may die in the attempt as she then spitefully tries to drown you in the toilet she uses as a refuge from real life.
I have spent the day doing battle with the public sector, and having been victorious, I must now prepare for an early flight interstate tomorrow to consolidate the win. Troll chasing is a relay, I’ll pass on the baton for a while. (Unless I get really riled, that is).

JC
21 Feb 12 at 11:13 pm
I didn’t read the FOX thread. I dare say there was much cynicism about black American culture – which has become drug-addled, mawkish, talentless, crass and ugly. It wouldn’t have helped that sleazeball Jesse Jackson (the man revealed to have fathered a baby with his young mistress while he was ‘counselling’ Bill Clinton during the Lewinsky scandal) was up on the podium.
Having said that, there is no excuse for OTT race-baiting. But many of us remember the old days at LGF when Charles’s thousands of “lizards” ridiculed Palestinians as sub-human and called for Mecca to be nuked on an almost daily basis.
By the way, if you want definitive evidence that Kevin Costner is one of the world’s most boring men, watch his eulogy at Houston’s funeral. He spends much of his time discussing himself as a boy (?) before attempting to make a great story out of his belief in Whitney for the part of Rachel Madden in Bodyguard. In fact, he was boring and the then luminous Whitney was needed to make the movie work. No greatness, just cynical commercial realpolitic. Recommended for insomniacs.

Anyone read the usual raft of bank bashing reports lately?
Oh no, billion dollar profits!
Um guys…large Australian banks have foreign investments in subsidiaries and these places have hundreds of millions of shares. The capitalisation of these firms is huge.
http://www.commbank.com.au/about-us/our-company/overview/default.aspx
Our shareholder base totals more than 800,000.
More than 75 per cent of our staff in Australia are shareholders.
Net profit after tax on statutory basis increased 13 percent to $6,934 million and on cash basis, 12 percent to $6,835 million (as at 30 June 2011).
Fully franked final dividend of $1.88 per share, an increase of 11 percent on the prior year. The total dividend for the year to 30 June 2011 was $3.20, taking the dividend payout ratio (cash basis) to 73.2%.
The Group has $667,899 million in assets held and funds under administration (as at 30 June 2011)
The dividend yield is around 6.5%, good but not spectacular.
They have over half a trillion of assets in their funds. Like most banks, their return on assets (or return on invested funds) is woeful (roughly 1%). What matters is how they manage these funds and get a higher return on funds levered.

22 Feb 12 at 9:18 am
NYT: For Women Under 30, Most Births Occur Outside Marriage
“It used to be called illegitimacy. Now it is the new normal. After steadily rising for five decades, the share of children born to unmarried women has crossed a threshold: more than half of births to American women under 30 occur outside marriage.
Once largely limited to poor women and minorities, motherhood without marriage has settled deeply into middle America. The fastest growth in the last two decades has occurred among white women in their 20s who have some college education but no four-year degree, according to Child Trends, a Washington research group that analyzed government data.
Among mothers of all ages, a majority — 59 percent in 2009 — are married when they have children. But the surge of births outside marriage among younger women — nearly two-thirds of children in the United States are born to mothers under 30 — is both a symbol of the transforming family and a hint of coming generational change.”

Bill McGurn, WSJ:
Sex, Lies and Rick Santorum
The politics of the double standard on social issues.
“When Barack Obama was campaigning for president in 2008, he declared that marriage is between a man and a woman. For the most part, his position was treated as a nonissue.
Now Rick Santorum is campaigning for president. He too says that marriage is between a man and a woman. What a different reaction he gets.
There’s no mystery why. Mr. Santorum is attacked because everyone understands that he means what he says.
President Obama, by contrast, gets a pass because everyone understands—nudge nudge, wink wink—that he’s not telling the truth. The press understands that this is just one of those things a Democratic candidate has to say so he doesn’t rile up the great unwashed.
It’s arguably the most glaring double standard in American life today. It helps explain why candidates with social views that are fairly conventional among ordinary Americans—the citizens of 31 states including California have rejected same-sex marriage when put to a vote—find themselves depicted as extreme. It also speaks to why even some who share Mr. Santorum’s social views nonetheless fear that his outspokenness on these issues will only undermine his candidacy.
That has led some folks to suggest that Mr. Santorum simply drop these issues altogether. Their hope is that by concentrating his energies solely on Mr. Obama’s management of the economy and foreign affairs, Mr. Santorum might avoid dividing his party and America. However reasonable the argument may be on paper, it is simply not practical.”

A fulsome and reasonabe critique of Santorum in the Wa-Po
“Obama advisers and other Democrats see a Santorum whose record, writings and statements, particularly on social issues, will be used to portray him as far too conservative for many voters. His record, they say, could make Santorum anathema to suburban swing voters, especially women. That view is shared by some Republicans and independent analysts.
“They [Democrats] would brutalize him on social and cultural issues and present him as so far out of the mainstream as to be radical,” said G. Terry Madonna, director of the Center for Politics and Public Affairs at Franklin & Marshall College and a leading pollster in Pennsylvania. “The analogy would be Barry Goldwater” — the 1964 GOP nominee who suffered a landslide defeat.”

Even conservative polticians were inclined to take an approach that gave some sort of genuflection (what Rupert might have termed “giving the planet the benefit of the doubt”) to the notion that man might be contributing to global warming, given the overwhelming media meme that we saw in the lead up to the 2007 election. It was so strongly promoted that it contributed hugely to the ALP’s win. I call it perverting the course of democracy, which fails to deliver proper results in the absence of honest media. Just like climate modelling, prone to error.
There are plenty of genuine pollution issues to address instead of wasting huge amounts of money and damaging our really fantastic advantages in coal (hence energy) and minerals, when it’ll make no difference to the climate. The turnaround in conservative stance came after some were game to call the emperors clothes for what they were, and a big grassroots reaction confirmed that they were on the right track. Polling is now disastrous for the ALP.
Unless they find a way to defuse what is now writ large, a carbon tax based on dodgy modelling with the price set at more than double what it should be in any event, they’re history. The Green Left can cling to its religion, but level-headed Labor politicians should see that disowning this disaster is essential. It shouldn’t be that hard for ministers who spend most weeks in barefaced delivery of any crap that’ll support this week’s flip-flop or foot-shot.

“Much of the biblical scholarly world has been buzzing since Feb. 1, when a New Testament professor made a claim during a debate that was news to most everyone who heard it — a first-century fragment of Mark’s Gospel may have been found.
It would be the earliest-known fragment of the New Testament, placing it in the very century of Christ and the apostles.
The claim by Dallas Theological Seminary’s Daniel B. Wallace took place during a debate with University of North Carolina professor Bart Ehrman, an author whose popular books claim the New Testament cannot be trusted because the original manuscripts aren’t in existence.”
Should be very interesting and perhaps more.

Troubled, Candy? TROUBLED!?
I’ll let you know who’s troubled!
I lay here on MaryTs desk, night after night, unable to run away. I get my keys pounded, I’m covered in spittle, and get thrown across the room when she starts drinking gin. My F6 key is missing, and the caps lock key sticks because she ashes her cigarette with her left hand, and I am really glad I can’t see what’s happening with her right. Lizzie is unable to get me some hints on how MaryT can at least get a girlfriend, or even a boyfriend.
She even waxes her chest, and that’s just between us girls, OK? Maybe you can give me some hints? Isn’t there a grocery shelf stacker somewhere who can give her a bit you-know-what?
I’m seriously thinking of ejecting my battery, and ending it all.
How much can a poor keyboard bear?

Puddyng of purpaysse
PERIOD: England, 15th century | SOURCE: Harleian MS 279 | CLASS: Authentic
DESCRIPTION: Stuffed porpoise stomach
GODE COOKERY TRANSLATION:
Pudding of porpoise. Take the Blood of him, & the grease of him self, & Oatmeal, & Salt, & Pepper, & Ginger, & mix these together well, & then put this in the Gut of the porpoise, & then let it boil easily, & not hard, a good while; & then take him up, & broil him a little, & then serve forth.
INGREDIENTS:
Porpoise blood
Porpoise grease
Oatmeal
Salt
Pepper
Ginger
One porpoise stomach
DIRECTIONS:
Combine the porpoise blood, porpoise grease, and oatmeal, & season it with salt, pepper, & ginger. This should be a thick & moist stuffing-like mixture. Stuff the porpoise stomach about half full with this, as the stuffing will swell during cooking.. Sew up the stomach tightly or secure each end with string, & prick it all over with a large needle to avoid bursting. Put an upturned plate in the base of a pot of boiling water, stand the stomach on this and bring back to the boil; boil steadily for 3 to 4 hours. Cook until done; remove from water and drain well. Place in a broiler and cook for several minutes on both sides to slightly crisp the skin, then serve.
This recipe is essentially a porpoise haggis, as it uses all the elements found in the traditional Scottich haggis of a boiled sheep stomach with an oatmeal stuffing.
If for some reason you are unable to find a porpoise stomach, you might try a sheep stomach, still used today when making haggis. Alternatively, you may do the “American” version of making haggis, which leaves out the stomach entirely and has the mixture baked in a loaf pan.
Also, you may substitute a little white wine for the porpoise blood and butter or suet for the porpoise grease. Vegetable shortening may be also be used for the porpoise grease; the original recipe was probably intended for Lent and porpoise grease would have been an acceptable animal fat to use at that time. Vegetable shortening will probably be the closest and easiest alternative to fish grease if you wish to keep this a Lenten dish.

I also see part of the strategy of pumping up numbers of Aborigines, by including more and more 1/64th Aborigines is justify even more funding for the Aboriginal Industry. If they can say “5% of the Australian population are indigenous, yet only 1% are university Professors” they can use this to justify AA programs, such as increasing the number of university professors five fold, and so on.

Stimulas spending $100 000 000 per day. Jobs saved 1 000 000 or roughly keeping the unemployment rate 8% below what it would have been. Cost per job saved $700 per week. Why the hell couldn’t we have just offered every unemployed Australian a minimum wage job at $600 per week this would have been much cheaper.

Thanks Gab. Contrary to the views of some there is never too much to learn about cancer. The strangest report of late was that in an animal study severe fasting was just as good if not better than chemotherapy. And the bods have finally admitted that “chemo brain” does exist, a few years ago they found that many chemo drugs are better at killing neurons than cancer cells.

Gab,
Yes, curcumin from turmeric should be in everyone’s diet. Good for neurons and cancer, appears to prevent protein aggregation. I’ve posted on my blog the link to the severe fasting study but this blog doesn’t allow blog links so can’t ref here.
I. Tiger raised this months ago: ketogenic diets. One study I recently read did show promise for these diets. Those diets, and DCA, and fasting, are all inter-related. There has been too much neglect of the metabolic aspects of cancer and too much emphasis on gene mutations. That is now being corrected but given Warburg was 1923 it seems a bit late!

The big problem I had with the findings is that the increase over c was so tiny as to suggest some type of error. Really, when you think about the number of runs they have to do, the extreme sensitivity of the expts, such a small increase should have been treated with much greater scepticism.
John H.
23 Feb 12 at 10:52 pm
Yes absolutely. Even though the stated accuracy may have had this small increase conclusively above C, the small size of it meant the likelyhood that some unaccounted for error was still present was high.

Smith was terrible on Lateline. His dummy spitting and evasiveness in denying the bleeding obvious was a bad look. Admittedly he has a lemon to sell but he didn’t perform well under pressure. It should have finished off any remaining hope he might have had as a compromise candidate but this being Labor it probably won’t have.

Even as US politicians praise the Muslim Brotherhood while visiting Cairo earlier this week, the various branches of the Muslim Brotherhood around the Middle East, in particular Egypt and Tunisia, are beginning to let their “moderate” mask slip. http://catallaxyfiles.com/2012/02/21/the-peoples-vote-and-the-recall/#comment-411355
Would you support a Senate chamber, if it were constituted by some other method than equal number of Senators from each state?
Peter Patton
21 Feb 12 at 7:47 pm
Conscientiously objectionable sortition in three classes for rotating nine year once only terms.
Also: I would elect the senate list nationally but weigh the votes from the smaller states as an inverse of their share of reps.
If it is unfair at least it is explicit and major parties cannot artificially exhaust smaller party votes in half senate elections.
But with that I would prefer just straight up four year set terms for both.
You could even do sortition on an equal basis for each State.
…..
If we had a Presidential system of Government, I would consider unicameralism if there was PR. My preference is for MMR from electorates decided by each State, but in proportion to population. I’m inferring I want a lot more States with more powers (somewhat getting the rid of the need for equal representation of each State) and varying populations.

Same crap. You might think Jesus was crazy, wrong, or the subject of massive post-mortem myth-building, but by normal standards you’d say he existed on the balance of evidence.
Also, the FLavians were only in power from 69 to 96. They were came into power something like 20 years after Jesus’ life time, and were dead before the bulk of the influential Christian texts were written (ie the letters of Paul, written roughly 50 years after Jesus’ death).

My God, the suppurating venom that oozes freely throughour the parliamentary Labor party is a literally incredible sight. What a pack of amoral, unethical vermin we are now seeing revealed. To think that they could campaign again, seeking government, in the light of all that they themselves have now revealed to have been the truth of the way they operated in government is just ….it’s just….well, words fail me.
They want to push the re-set button again, so we can go on with a new PM or a re-anointed PM? Their contempt for the electorate is as massive as their duplicitous venality. If there is any justice they are unelectable for a generation. The only jarring note in this is that there are still people who tell Newspoll and Nielsen and Essential that they are prepared once more to vote for this self-revealed rabble.
However, the third thing in life that is certain is that, in a future election campaign, whoever has ascended to the position of alpha-viper in the ALP cesspit has only to utter one of the time-honoured abstract nouns like “vision” and throw in a reference to “those less better-off,” and despite all that we have seen with our own eyes – the whole despicable shambles – and the ABC and Fairfax will come in on-cue with the fawning coverage.
Remember, we’ve got to save Australia from Mr. Abbott – we could not afford to have a really bad government, could we?

I did not mean an actual banana republic, JC, more a philosophical one. Fortunately, if by no other means than the calendar, the bikie gang formerly known as the ALP, and their crossbench enablers, must eventually face the verdict of the voters.
Reams of forest products will be squandered as to what these great unwashed should do, and the crossbenchers will opine increasingly desperately as to how their electors should interpret their actions, but eventually – oh happy day! – the Australian body politic has booked an enema.

Been pondering the GG’s role, and her connection to Shorten when this travelling circus finally goes over the cliff.
There is no Deputy Governor General of Australia. It seems that if the GG is unable or unwilling to act in relation to dissolving a government, the senior State Governor, in this case, Prof Marie Bashir (NSW) steps in as a Commonwealth Administrator.
Heiner and the conflict of interest claims plaguing the GG may well make Prof Bashir Australia’s de facto Head of State and Kingmaker in the next few days.
Fascinating times we live in. Nearly as much fun as when Gough got the sack.

Hours later, the army said it carried out another strike on northern Gaza.
