Kevin Rudd has resigned as Foreign Minister. Looks like he’ll challenge next week.

Recall that she kept KR on as Foreign Minister following the election because of fear that he would resign from the HoR. That calculus hasn’t changed. If Rudd loses the leadership ballot, he will probably resign from Parliament, leading to a bi-election and the loss of Griffith to the LNP.

My theory: Rudd was initially willing to wait and see if his campaigning for Bligh could be claimed to be a success (even if she lost, if it was by less than expected, it could count as a sort of “win”.) Then he could ride back into Canberra as the man of the people, and he could turn it around for Federal Labor.
But polling in Queensland is so bad for Bligh, he has realised this is not going to happen.
May as well bring a challenge on now, then, before the massive loss of Bligh.

Does Kevni understand that policy, not personalities, is the problem? I don’t think so.
So he eventually (in this challenge or non-challenge, or the next challenge) gets rid of the dud chick and attempts to slug it out with Abbott on the carbon tax and the rest of the ALP anti-business platform. Abbott wins narrowly about a year from now because most people recognise that forensic accountants need to be put through the place and more Labor means more tax and spend. Remember Howard was “an embarrassing little pissant” (Sam Kekovich) for many of his years in office. Leftwing zombies will never like Abbott; I don’t think that matters in middle Australia.

There was no evidence, but there was also smoke. Someone leaked it.
I don’t know if the leak was made to damage Gillard by someone in Rudd’s camp, or if the moron herself sponsored the leak in the hope of gaining the momentum.
If you look at the days events, you had a ton of shit coming at Rudd from the Slapper’s camp and it looked like she was gaining momentum. The moron may have miscalculated. She lobbed the threat of the firing but then Rudd simply volleyed back twice as hard. It’s clear he’s regained the momentum because the drama continues by leaving open what he’s going to say in the next few days.
I think she’s fucked it up today. She should never have said she was going to fire him. Really bad move.

Danby probably finally got permission from his handlers to mention Rudd’s repeated meetings with journalists. So Rudd’s denials of stealth are the deliberate and fake denials of a very dangerous man indeed.
His cry of faceless men forgets that every caucus member is well known, has a webpage, and glossy photographs spread right through their electorates.
But Uhlmann was able to dig out Rudd’s faceless man, Bruce Hawker, who couln’t answer simple questions without a suppressed giggle spreading across his jowls.

When the dust settles, the media trainer who convinced Julia to speak to the electorate at all times as if they were a particularly dumb class of nine-year-olds, will need to be found by the ALP and whacked, as Tony Soprano would say.
I am sure that she is perfectly warm and engaging around a dinner table, but that mode of speaking to the public at large has sunk her.
It goes without saying that I blame Tony Abbott and his relentless negativity, for making Julia sound like Flo and Dorrie on Mogadon.

(When he smites, they stay smote, so sucking up seems appropriate)
On a serious note, I expected this berserk rockshow of a government to be an entertaining squandocracy when they were selected by the three maniacal morons.
In this alone they have vastly exceeded my expectations.
I present this amazingly effervescent thread as evidence.
Sigh. If only they did not cost so much….

JC,
I know you joke about Kate Ellis being very cute and all, but I seriously think she has a lot of smarts, is fairly modest and has a lot more dignity than Rudd or Gillard. She certainly got there by merit unlike Nanna Roxon, Dumbarse Pilbersek or the hopeless Ginerella Vuvuzela.
I’ve heard her speeches and she seems a bit more friendly to libertarians. I hope she isn’t faking it like Rudd was. You’ve got to remember I respect the OLD ALP, which was formed under genuine circumstance, had a purpose and wanted to leave you alone, mostly.
I reckon she should run, and then call an election to become our first elected female PM. Either way, she would be remembered nobly. If Crean wins, he should give her a major portfolio, even Treasury.
I’m serious.

Look, I’ve never had a real issue with the old style ALP of Hawke and Keating. Fuck, I voted for them. I think their economics was screwed up especially in terms of the labor markets. But thei intentions was always towards improving the average person’s lot in life.
I have no time for this lot involved with the ‘vironment movement. This movement stands for the exact opposite.
I’ll take your word on Kate. And hey, if she makes it to PM who’s complaining?
JC
22 Feb 12 at 10:42 pm
Gillard is today’s loser. She has shown that she can’t even win when she knows all 103 voters, has an overwhelming majority of support and is the incumbent. As always her judgement is terrible. She supposedly has the whip hand and can’t even control the narrative. I reckon at the end if the day caucus will realize that who ever loses will probably resign and that Gillards seat is winnable in a by election, but Rudds is not. They will go Rudd. The sensible move would be to vote for someone else, but apparently there is no one in Fed ALP who could lead the party.

I think the worst feature of the night is the dreadful put down of Rudd released by Swan–apparently he was on 2gb too about 9pm?
Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the pseudo grown up Treasurer of our nation, a nasty spiteful little henchman of the Slapper!
I always knew he was a Goose, but I didn;t know he was also a gullible paid gun for hire.
He really has cooked himself, the silly Goose–and it seems has shown us just how much this battle is really a bitter gutter fight all about two “Me only Me” lousy individuals supported by more of the same.
Not ONE WORD have we heard yet about how Australians can get their fortunes looked after by incumbent or pretender or followers, no, it’s just “gimmee back my crown” and ” No I’m keeping it “and “Stop being nasty to poor Gingerella ” talk from the empty suits in Canberra’s right of Speaker ranks!!
Then again there are those who are saying” I love it, pass the popcorn and tell Tony Abbott to just do a Bradbury all the way to the Lodge…”
