Kevin Rudd has resigned as Foreign Minister. Looks like he’ll challenge next week.

Update: Centrebet and Sportsbet have shut down the ALP leader market and the election timing market.

Update II: Audio of resignation here.

    I expect a carbon tax deferrment rather than a price drop and the announcement Sunday or Monday

  8. Recall that she kept KR on as Foreign Minister following the election because of fear that he would resign from the HoR. That calculus hasn’t changed. If Rudd loses the leadership ballot, he will probably resign from Parliament, leading to a bi-election and the loss of Griffith to the LNP.

  20. Typical Rudd passive-aggressiveness …

    Poor me, attacked by “faceless men”, not supported by the PM. Only want what is best for the ALP, etc. etc.

    It is also incontestable that Julia Gillard, as I’ve said before, has been subjected to vicious misogyny. But while she has displayed commendable skills in negotiation and legislation, she does appear to lack a sound political touch. That may be because she attained the leadership too early.

    Rudd is campaigning. Rudd is talking to journalists about the leadership despite his astonishing denial.

    I know the names of some of those he has spoken to. I know where he said it – in his office – on a parliamentary sitting day – and I know what he said. He told them a challenge would happen; he told them he was prepared to lose the first ballot and go to the backbench; and in one conversation he laughed about the prospect of Gillard stumbling again.

    Today Kevin Rudd has tendered his resignation as minister for foreign affairs.

    Mr Rudd was a strong and effective advocate for Australia’s interests overseas.

    During his period of service as foreign minister there were many achievements. He strongly pursued Australia’s interests in the world.

    I am disappointed that the concerns Mr Rudd has publicly expressed this evening were never personally raised with me, nor did he contact me to discuss his resignation prior to his decision.

  327. Now that would be sad.

    It’s better than a party of progressives or a permanent Labor/Green Alliance which is what will now inevitably happen.

    If Kruddy does something to turn that around he will have done a great service despite his previous awful prime-ministership.

  333. When the dust settles, the media trainer who convinced Julia to speak to the electorate at all times as if they were a particularly dumb class of nine-year-olds, will need to be found by the ALP and whacked, as Tony Soprano would say.

    I am sure that she is perfectly warm and engaging around a dinner table, but that mode of speaking to the public at large has sunk her.

    It goes without saying that I blame Tony Abbott and his relentless negativity, for making Julia sound like Flo and Dorrie on Mogadon.

  337. JC,

    I know you joke about Kate Ellis being very cute and all, but I seriously think she has a lot of smarts, is fairly modest and has a lot more dignity than Rudd or Gillard. She certainly got there by merit unlike Nanna Roxon, Dumbarse Pilbersek or the hopeless Ginerella Vuvuzela.

    I’ve heard her speeches and she seems a bit more friendly to libertarians. I hope she isn’t faking it like Rudd was. You’ve got to remember I respect the OLD ALP, which was formed under genuine circumstance, had a purpose and wanted to leave you alone, mostly.

    I reckon she should run, and then call an election to become our first elected female PM. Either way, she would be remembered nobly. If Crean wins, he should give her a major portfolio, even Treasury.

    I’m serious.

    Look, I’ve never had a real issue with the old style ALP of Hawke and Keating. Fuck, I voted for them. I think their economics was screwed up especially in terms of the labor markets. But thei intentions was always towards improving the average person’s lot in life.

    I have no time for this lot involved with the ‘vironment movement. This movement stands for the exact opposite.

    I’ll take your word on Kate. And hey, if she makes it to PM who’s complaining?

    JC

    22 Feb 12 at 10:42 pm

  342. Gillard is today’s loser. She has shown that she can’t even win when she knows all 103 voters, has an overwhelming majority of support and is the incumbent. As always her judgement is terrible. She supposedly has the whip hand and can’t even control the narrative. I reckon at the end if the day caucus will realize that who ever loses will probably resign and that Gillards seat is winnable in a by election, but Rudds is not. They will go Rudd. The sensible move would be to vote for someone else, but apparently there is no one in Fed ALP who could lead the party.

    .

    23 Feb 12 at 7:37 am

  371. Actually feminism arose as a reaction to misogyny. Misandry had nothing to do with it.

    Urban Dictionary

    misandry

    A term created by a group of straight white men who habitually confuse their “brain” with their anus. These men’s rumination are usually too moronic for anyone without brain damage. They use this word to refer to what they perceive as “hatred of men” by the government, the media, and society at large. What these white men conveniently ignore is the fact that the government, the media, society, and any system of representation is run by white men for white men and used to marginalize women and minorities. These white men keep on complaining about “misandry” despite the fact that:

    - according to the most extensive studies by the U.S. Government Accountability Office (2003), US Department of Labour, International Labour Organisation, the United Nations, the World Bank, the European Commission, the UK Equalities Office (2010), the OECD, and various sovereign governments, universities and NGOs, women earn significantly less than men EVEN WHEN ADJUSTED for differences in work experience, education, occupation, parental and marital status, hours worked, tenure, etc.;

    - women are the primary targets of gender violence and men are the primary perpetrators of gender violence (e.g., U.S. Bureau of Statistics 1999, 2004), CDC (2000) WHO, UN, tribunal statistics worldwide, etc;
    - men dominate all spheres of power from the military, government, economic, social (slut shaming, dual burdens, attacks on women’s capabilities and other sexist gender roles, etc), religious and reproductive rights (in most countries and states of the world).

    - white men have a disproportionately large share of power although women outperform men in school and college in all OECD countries (e.g., PISA 2001);

    - white men disproportionately control all systems of representation (religions, movies, songs etc.) and constantly depict the world and women and minorities from their point of view.

    - 99% of the definitions of gender sensitive subjects on this site are something violent towards and degrading of women and women’s bodies.

    How about you take it easy straight white men? Your white, male and heterosexual privilege isn’t going anywhere, so RELAX.

    “Misandry”?! LOL.
