Ann Romney discusses the media

A report about Ann Romney, ie Mrs Mitt Romney to an earlier generation:

At [the Midland County Republican Club luncheon Sunday], Ann Romney also complains about the media treatment of her husband. ‘All of us in this room know the media loves Barack Obama. They don’t want anyone who has a chance of defeating him,’ she says.

Speaking openly about how it was ‘getting harder and harder to be cheerful,’ she laughingly says, ‘I am so mad at the press [that] I could just strangle them! And, you know, I think I’ve decided there are going to be some people invited on the bus and some people just aren’t going to be invited on the bus.’

Every jest, as my Dad used to say, is a half truth. I suppose she wouldn’t really strangle them, but this business about the media, Mitt Romney and Obama is just about dead on.

The story is also reported here from a different angle.

  3. I’m afraid Ann Romney – an impressive woman – only adds to rather than detracts from the criticism of her husband.

She’s presumably piqued at her husband’s latest ‘two cadillac’s’ gaffe. These recurrent of the cuff gaffes underline just how out of touch Romney is with voters ($10,000 wager in a debate, speaker’s fees of $400,000 per year being only minor income etc “severely conservative” etc)

These gaffes – and they are myriad – will be replayed ad nauseum by the Obama campaign in the fall because they go to the class warfare campaign Obama has in store for Romney.

$1 billion worth of tv ad carpet bombing ad nauseum.

Respected conservative commentator and Commentary magaazine editor, John Podhoretz:

“Mitt Romney has a problem. No, not his spotty record as a conservative or his advocacy of a health-care mandate. Not even the fact that he ran a private-investment firm that laid off people. Those are matters he addresses with great fluency, and while his answers may not satisfy many in his own party, they are thoughtfully conceived, the best possible case he can make for himself.

No, his problem is with Mitt Romney.

Or, rather, the Mitt Romney who tries and fails to make connections with voters, the Mitt Romney who tries to address complex matters of class and stumbles, the Mitt Romney whose gaffes all suggest a deep awkwardness when it comes to talking about money.

Over the last few days, he’s made two such gaffes. The first came when, in an attempt to show his deep roots in Michigan, he allowed as how his wife Ann has “a couple of Cadillacs.”

You can see the thought process that went into the off-the-cuff anecdote. Romney’s in Michigan; Cadillacs are American cars made in Michigan; Romney has come under some fire for opposing the bailouts of car companies. So how best to demonstrate his and his family’s support for Michigan than by pointing out his wife owns not one but two expensive cars made in the state?

Logical — until you get to the result. The anecdote failed because it didn’t make Romney more likable, more human, more like the people to whom he was speaking — the sole reason any politician would talk about what car his wife owns. Rather than making a connection with voters, he was driving home the economic and class difference between them.”

Marc A. Thiessen, another respected conservative commentator just recently back from a visit to Australia, in the WaPo:

“No doubt Barack Obama would love to reprise Ronald Reagan’s 1984 “Morning in America” reelection campaign, but the anemic economy is not cooperating. Without a robust recovery to trumpet, the president is betting his reelection on class warfare — focusing on “income inequality” and “fairness.” Class warfare is not a winning strategy, but it is the only card Obama has to play.

That’s the good news for Republicans. The bad news is: Right now, the GOP is blowing it.”

The decision for GOP primary voters of Romney v Santorum is who has the best chance of beating Obummer.

  5. Ann Romney is not going to convince anyone that she and her soulless c___ of a husband are not out of touch by blaming their difficulties on the lamestream media.

Mittens said some truly stupid shit that happens to be extremely revealing about his thought processes (as JamesK notes), but the dumb prick is running for President.

In what parallel universe do the media give presidential candidates a free pass for saying hilariously inappropriate yet revealing things?

    So go on, Kates.

Blame the media for accurately reporting what Mitt said. Blame the polls for showing Obama leading. Blame the idiot voters who don’t know what’s good for them when the President is reelected, instead of this insufferable douchebag.

2008 election. Obumbo and his wife got off scott free about pretty much everything.

His wife talked about how racist the US and that she wasn’t proud of being an American.

He talked about lowering sea levels.

    Romney comments pale in comparison.

  12. Well supposedly Gingrich’s vote goes to Santorum 2:1 over Romney.

But i=Arizona was a huge win and he has an unequivocal victory in michigan.
I suspect romney has broken the back.

Santorum was close but needed a win to carry him to SuperTuesday.

The Santorum ‘vomit’ comment on the Kennedy speech even if an accurate critqiue, didn’t help.

If Romney wins next week in Ohio, the race is over.
