Paul Ryan

According to AP on Drudge, Wisconsin Rep Paul Ryan will be Romney’s VP choice. From a swing state, from the mid-west and fiscally as sound as they come. The AP story begins:

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has picked Wisconsin congressman Paul Ryan to be his running mate, according to a Republican with knowledge of the development. They will appear together Saturday in Norfolk, Va., at the start of a four-state bus tour to introduce the newly minted GOP ticket to the nation.

The official spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because this person was not authorized to disclose the decision.

In a statement issued Friday night, Romney’s campaign would say only that the running mate would be revealed at 9 a.m. EDT at the Nauticus Museum. Berthed at the museum is the USS Wisconsin – which offered a hint about Romney’s choice.

We’ll know soon enough but if it is Ryan, it will add momentum and in spite of every effort by Obama and the media, should be a net positive. He will take Joe Biden apart in the debates.

It’s Official:

Thank goodness this is up because the Cat picked the wrong time to go down.

An excellent choice. Too bad the place I’m in at the moment doesn’t have cable, I’m itching to see the news feed on the cable networks.

I can’t bring myself to watch our media spin on the US election.

  2. JamesK

Even better is that we’re probably looking at the President-elect in Nov 2020.

The turn-around in America is gonna take a minimum of 5 presidential terms

  3. Alex Pundit

Lol! I’ve seen this clip before but watching it rather than listening to it, I never noticed how nervous Obama looked….

Seeing that, watching Biden up against him is going to be a real cracker!

  4. Jumpnmcar

Don’t take much interest in US politics myself but just watched 4 Youtube vids on Ryan that followed from the above clip and I have to admit, I’d vote for him as leader of the coalition, and therefore, our next PM.
He would put Swan in a coma within 3 minutes, Hockey in 5.

  5. delfino

Wow, he is fantastic. Interesting watching the initial condescending head nodding of Obama, to the fixed stare was interesting. Wish we had him here on our team.

Stephen Hayes, 3 weeks ago in the Weekly Standard:

    Man with a Plan
How Paul Ryan became the intellectual leader of the Republican party

Ryan’s opening remarks take 19 minutes. As if to confirm his well-deserved reputation as a budget wonk, his PowerPoint presentation—yes, a PowerPoint—includes a dizzying array of charts and graphs with debt-to-GDP ratios, revenue estimates, spending analyses, CBO projections, and a fair number of acronyms.

For years, this was the rap on Ryan. He talks in wonkspeak, the peculiar Washington dialect of budget mavens and Capitol Hillians who focus on fiscal policy, and his attempts to communicate the seriousness of our situation were compromised by his affinity for budget jargon.

This is no longer true. Ryan’s presentation is compelling and easy to understand. He begins with a description of the coming debt crisis, briefly describes Barack Obama’s failure to address it, and then moves quickly to the five principles of his budget proposal. He’s given this talk hundreds of times before—to town halls, business groups, small gatherings of congressional Republicans. The practice shows. At one point, Ryan pauses for effect before he clicks to a slide depicting the “current path” projection over a graph tracing the history of U.S. debt. When he finally unveils the red Everest-like mountain of coming debt the audience responds with a collective gasp.

His criticism of the White House is matter-of-fact, almost muted, his tone one of disappointment, not anger. The exception comes when Ryan shares the comment Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner made in testimony before Ryan’s committee earlier this spring: “You’re right to say we’re not coming before you today to say we have a definitive solution to that long-term problem. What we do know is we don’t like yours.”

What an excellent choice. Ryan is proper economic conservative, clean cut with presumably no skeletons in the closet and a good family man. His plan is by far the most credible to getting the US economy back on track. He’s also comes across as a very likeable bloke. I think this will play very well with the base and a lot of wavering independents.

The guy’s an empty suit who voted for every deficit busting bill during the bush era only to find the light of balanced budgets when a democrat came into office. He’s pretty and he talks well, but that won’t change what he has actually put down on paper. His proposals to gut Medicare, slash medicaid and destroy every other government program except defense will be catastrophic for the Romney campaign. Those policies may win him a bunch of fans on CAT but IF this is true it’s sign of panic by the Romney camp and will open up a raft of true attacks on how Romney and Ryan sees American society.

I’m actually glad he’s on the ticket, because it will force a true choice election and if Americans vote for Romney/Ryan than I’ll adjust to the new reality, but my guess is they won’t.

  11. Sinclair Davidson

Intrade has Obama at 59% to win.

  12. Alex Pundit

WadeJ, you are a complete and utter talking point reciting robot. Have an original argument for once. Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security will go bankrupt if they are not addressed. The unfunded liabilities that have been racked up now total $112 trillion dollars. That is not a typo.

Can you please tell us where the US is going to get the money to fund that?

Now, regarding the cuts to defence. The left are always howling that the Republicans are going to slash spending for services like the Police and the Fire Department that are essential services.

Why is the Military not an essential service? (making cuts to the Military won’t make a jot of difference anyway)

On the spending part, Paul Ryan, alongside other members of congress and the Senate, like Tom Coburn, wanted to cut spending in the Bush years, but Bush wasn’t interested.

Just like the Republicans of today want to cut spending, and the current president is not interested.

  14. Alex Pundit

Thanks Sinc. We’ve all seen the polls. We know that Romney has got an uphill climb. The fact that he does, especially with this incompetent of an administration and shipwreck of an economy, stuns us.

It’s not going to stop us from hoping though.

  15. C.L.

…like Tom Coburn, wanted to cut spending in the Bush years, but Bush wasn’t interested…

    No.

Bush reduced the deficit from $412 billion in 2004 to $162 billion in 2007, a 60 percent drop. In 2004 the federal budget deficit was $412 billion. In 2005 it dropped to $318 billion. In 2006 the deficit dropped again to $248 billion. And, in 2007 it fell below $200 billion to $162 billion.

    Enter the Democrat Congress.

  16. Alex Pundit

    C.L.

I stand corrected. Yes, I have seen those charts that show spending went down in 2007 then went up in 2008 with the Pelosi budgets.

Yes, the Republicans did actually help control spending, but I do know that when Coburn said to Bush that he was looking forward to cutting spending, Bush went silent on the phone.

iPhone App: Romney Selects Paul Ryan

The Mitt Romney campaign officially announces the selection of Paul Ryan as the Republican vice presidential candidate via its iPhone app.

    Press Release:

MITT ROMNEY & PAUL RYAN: AMERICA’S COMEBACK TEAM

Boston, MA – Mitt Romney today announced Wisconsin Representative Paul Ryan as his Vice Presidential running mate. Below is Congressman Ryan’s biography:

U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan is in his seventh term in Congress representing Wisconsin’s First Congressional District. He is Chairman of the House Budget Committee, where he has worked tirelessly leading the effort to reign in federal spending and increase accountability to taxpayers. He also serves on the House Ways and Means Committee, where he has focused on simplifying the tax code and making health care more affordable and accessible.

In January 2010, Ryan gained attention nationwide after unveiling his “Roadmap for America’s Future,” a proposal to eliminate the federal deficit, reform the tax code, and preserve entitlements for future generations.

Representative Ryan was born in Janesville, Wisconsin on January 29, 1970. A fifth-generation Wisconsin native, Ryan was the youngest of four children born to Paul Ryan Sr., who worked as an attorney, and Betty, a stay-at-home mom.

In April 2000, Ryan proposed to Janna Little, a native Oklahoman, at one of his favorite fishing spots, Big St. Germain Lake in Wisconsin. Later that year, the two were married in Oklahoma City.

    Thanks C.L.

Another beautiful offering from Krauthammer. Again, I don’t have cable where I am at now so I’ve been itching to see some up to date commentary on this.

  20. Alex Pundit

Yes, the Dems will rue the day.

  21. .

    Wow.

    I am impressed.

    Rand Paul VP for 2020.

If I were American, I’d be a member of the LP.

But this election, I’d vote Republican.

  23. PSC

On the spending part, Paul Ryan, alongside other members of congress and the Senate, like Tom Coburn, wanted to cut spending in the Bush years, but Bush wasn’t interested.

That’s why he voted for Medicare Part D I guess – a cunning plan to fool those in favour of fiscal expansion by pretending to be one of them, so as to get in a position of power where he could cut Medicare.

He was just planning fiscal rectitude for the very very long term.

  24. Gab

So it’s been almost an hour since the announcement and nothing as yet from the rabid lefty media on Ryan’s background, real or trumped up. No ads yet about Ryan killing anyone, or something? No rumours yet? No imagined gaffes as yet? No sexual smears yet? No attacks on his wife yet?
    What’s taking them so long?

  25. C.L.

I love how lefties pretend to be fussy fiscal hawks.

Especially while running interference for the worst fiscal bum in world history.

  26. C.L.

    Oops:

Romney introduces Ryan as “the next President of the United States.”

    Video.

  27. JC

    Medicare Part D I guess

    Yep.

He’s about 100 times more reckless than the Kenyan with spending.

PSC, Ryan has said many times that he’s not there to make sudden changes that would hugely impact seniors. So if he’s voted in favor of various spending initiatives he does with that mind.

It’s the plan he has introducing vouchers etc that make the difference. Even Reason magazine makes a call for him.

You freaking lefties always become deficit hawks when there’s a conservative around. It’s really incredible.

    http://reason.com/archives/2012/08/09/the-case-for-paul-ryan-for-vice-presiden

Ryan isn’t like Dot or myself who would take an ax to entire departments and spending. By the time we got done with it, Washington would be a fucking ghost town.

  28. Gab

Maybe the Dems will just recycle their ad, the one with Ryan killing a grandma.

  29. Alex Pundit

    Nice Try

Next time think twice before posting talking points from the Dkos or the Paultard blogs.

  30. Alex Pundit

Yeah good one mate. Bruce Bartlett is actually now a proponent of Keynes, he endorses stimulus.

    Again, nice try.

  31. C.L.

    Full-time Bushitler critic, Bruce Bartlett.

    LOL.

  32. JamesK

Bruce Bartlett famously has a chip on his shoulder.

He got fired from a conservative think tank in 2005 after writing a book critical of George W Bush who despite the fact had worked fore his father’s administration didn’t give him a role in his administration.

So he loves the attention of leftist nutters who also have a rabid hatred of Bush.

Mouth-frothers and window-lickers like PSC are right up his alley

  33. Nanuestalker

Leftist heads are exploding as we speak…

  37. Rabz

    Oops…

    Da ‘white’ heteronormativity!

  38. Team Romney is the wrong way round, this fellow Ryan looks like a really good communicator with a plan.

American politicians on clips i’ve see always look so respectful and polite, it’s really nice to see.

  39. m0nty

Good call candy. Why did the GOP go through that whole nomination process again? Ryan would be the power behind the throne. The debate will coalesce around the more objectionable parts of Ryan’s economic plan, especially for non-whites. But I guess Obama already had the black vote sewn up, SSM support notwithstanding.

    Nate Silver’s analysis is interesting.

  40. JamesK

Nate Silver is a good pollster analyst.

    Hopeless policy and politics analyst.

I suspect half the reason he’s so ‘bad’ at the latter is to make happy with the mouth-foaming leftists who edit his newspaper as his polling analysis often pisses them off.

  41. m0nty

It’s true that Silver should stick to numbers, JamesK. His graphs are always top notch. It doesn’t take a rocket surgeon to figure out that Romney wanted to change things up, nevertheless.

  42. Infidel Tiger

The debate will coalesce around the more objectionable parts of Ryan’s economic plan, especially for non-whites.

Agreed. Ryan’s plan to solve the debt crisis by harvesting the organs of non-whites and selling them is highly controversial, but in my opinion fiscally sound.

  43. m0nty

It will be interesting to see how the Latino vote swings. Romney could have chosen Rubio to shore that up. But the Dems will hammer how Ryan’s plan hurts them.

    That’s meaningless m0nty.

    Silver’s language is very careful.

If you’re suggesting that Nate Silver himself says he thinks the polls indicate a likely Obama victory, you have a hole in your head….

    Oh wait.

Despite the blustery faffings of the likes of you and JC at times about how Romney is strolling to victory, the numbers just don’t show it.

    Of course they don’t.

    The convention hasn’t happened.

    It’s summer break snooze time.

“Is the country headed in the right direction?’ poll question is terrible for the Obummer.

Obama’s approval hasn’t broke n 48% for yonks – this a ceiling not a floor and his disapproval is above 50%.

I think it more and more likely that this will be a blow-out win for Romney.

I’ve been arguing this should be an election on principles and Romney was being way too cautious.

Romney, in choosing Ryan, has made this an election on ideology and vision rather than employment numbers.

    Good.

  53. m0nty

Two polls, Rassie and Gallup which measure likely voters show Romney ahead.

As you would well know, JC, the election will be decided on swing states, where Romney is not making up any ground.

As Nate Silver points out there’s a remarkable paucity of state polls in this election cycle at trghis time compared to 2008.

    Gee….. I wonder why?

And the electoral colleges don’t particularly matter if candidate A lead his opponent 52:48 nationally m0nty.

    That candidate will win.

National polling is indicative of what is going on in the states.

There’s divergence between polling and the betting markets. However betting markets are mostly closed to Americans.

    We’ll see.

  57. m0nty

You idiot. State trends are often way out of whack with national trends. Nice one JC, that gave me a hearty laugh.

  58. JC

National polls are indicative of a broad trend you moron. They have to be.

Don’t laugh to much as you could end up with heart failure for obvious reasons.
