“>”I’ve been to the real estate agent and had a look at the different houses, and I’ve picked this one, the CLP, as my home,” Ms Anderson told The Australian yesterday.
Ms Anderson has been appointed Minister for Indigenous Advancement and for Regional Development. She will also head a cabinet sub-committee on regional affairs that will include the CLP’s four other new bush members, three of whom are Aboriginal.

    congratulations to them all

  8. I think this is good news. The NT will serve as a good comparison against other indigenous areas for policies which are intended to help indigenous people. We’ll be able to see by the next election if comparatively speaking conditions improve in remote indigenous communities in the NT compared to those in other areas of Australia.

  9. I’m not hugely optimistic about this CLP win in the NT with the help of the indig.

I think there’s a schism that’s developed inside the indig movement between the white and more indig aboriginals all to do with money.

I watched the SBS program, Insight a few weeks back discussing the topic of how black is black.

It seemed to me that the argument between them is how to split the loot, which is why stuff like skin color is becoming important to them. there was never a question raised about stopping the water getting to the trough.

I’d really hold my horses here.

Bess Price seemed to be good value at times, but I didn’t get the sense she was ever tempted to join the LDP or even the free market faction in the Liberal/country party

  10. They;re starting to rebel against the new racism.

I was talking to one of our best-known indigenous leaders the other day.

He told me he thought indigenous people should be given more individual property rights, children in remote communities should be sent away to boarding schools and brought into the mainstream of Australian society.

He also said the Greens and their fellow travellers wanted to keep indigenous people as they had been before European settlement.

They wanted to treat indigenous people like museum artefacts – something quaint to look at with their traditional dancing and weapons but not part of modern Australia.
As an indigenous person, he said, he found all that recognition of the traditional owners at the beginning of speeches patronising and insulting. I was taken aback. This man is no conservative. Far from it. He said most indigenous people agreed with him but white activists didn’t.

And when I asked him why he didn’t speak out publicly he made a key point: If he did, he would have been howled down by the Aboriginal industry of leftists and Greens. It would be too much of a burden to bear.

    One name… Andrew Leigh.

He starts almost every speech with this fucking condescending statement. it’s a wonder no aboriginal has told the condescending prick to go fuck himself. I would have, a long time ago.

It’s so fucking offensive it’s beyond belief..

I begin by acknowledging the traditional owners of the lands on which we meet today

  13. Bess run/s her own business JC so at least she has that above the ALP union hacks. Larisa lee is a Vice chair of the the Jawoyn Association, which manages it’s money very well, Francis Xavier has managed the Red Cross, has been a teacher and a minister, these are all hard working people who have had to overcome many hurdles to get where they are. They have all had to ‘go back to school or continue their eduction beyond the norm’ an achievement we might think not that hard but for them a mountain.

That in itself makes them different. And that gives me hope.

As a young Aboriginal man said to me on the hustings, ‘Before this Aboriginal people did not know they had a choice with their vote,’ meaning they voted for the ALP or as the Big men told them to which was generally for the ALP anyhow.

You are right about the desire for money to go to those in need based on need rather than skin colour, but there is also a literal ocean of waste and mismanagement which could be saved with people who are a bit more savvy in charge.

Give them time to settle in and learn, support them, and see where it travels. I don’t expect miracles, but I am more optimistic now than I have been in a long time.

  15. I hope you’re right, Helen.

There’s $26 billion a year spent on the indig. I’m not optimistic though.

There’s some internecine tribal spat going on and I was thrown out temporarily (I hope). I’m still an Olympic Dammer though. It’s in my blood and I have the certificate to prove it.

  18. Here:

The Productivity Commission says more than $25 billion was directed towards Indigenous services nationally in the 2010-11 financial year.

  19. $44,000 per indigenous head vs $20,000 for the rest in terms of welfare services. It’s actually quite shocking.

  20. lol I believed you, JC, I was just amazed at how much gets spent and how little – if anything – there is to show for it in the way of improving the lot of those in need.

In the meantime I’ve looked up the defence budget and it’s $27bil 2012/13.

    Still mind-boggling.

  21. Blackfellers would only see a bit of that though. Most of it gets spent by white fellers on white fellers enabling them to spend it. Anything that unlocks and deploys the capital currently locked up is good.

Pearson is back after a few months skiving off at Maroochy. Handful of blackfellers completed journey from humpy to government in the NT.

Now let’s see what happens. Never before have they had this much power.

Absolutely. Most of it being paid for public service administration. I’d say a good 80% of it.

  24. For instance in Kalkarinji the SIHIP(?) (new house or refurbishment program under the intervention) program reefed out perfectly good stainless steel kitchens to the dump and replaced them with inferior kitchens with only one drawer and a cupboard the size of a small window. Paint was gurneyed off the walls and walls left bare. When house dwellers asked could they be painted they were told there was no money for paint. The cost of this largess? $75,000.00 per house.

Of course you could ask, well why didn’t the house owners go and buy some paint and do it themselves – not many tenants will do that – I should know – I have been a lessor in the past.

I remember about 20 years ago an article in the Bulletin which stated that only 20 cents of each housing dollar got through to an indigenous house. Every processing level reefs off their percentage of ‘administration costs’. And not just ‘whitefellas’ but ‘blackfellas’ too.

This is completely separate from the lack of care most dwellers exhibit towards their house, I am not trying to guild the lily here, it is a sad fact that an indigenous house doesn’t last anywhere near as long as an urban house.

I am certain a lot more could be done with less and better. Let us give this sub committee a chance, give the the rein and see where they steer. Terry has made a brave but very smart decision in setting this up this regional committee under Alison’s Chairmanship.

There are so many facets and so many layers, this will not be a quick fix and the end may be a long way from where we are now, but the adrenalin is flowing that great things could come of it.

  25. I think there was a general 300% tarriff on work in communities, but 25K for that kitchen is not what I would expect for that money in town. Crap.

No doubt there were good reasons.
