Arrogant, aloof, and unprepared

If he’s lost The Washington Post he’s lost the election. You and I know all of the following are true, but so far it’s been kept a secret from the Democrats. Now the secret is coming out, it’s from Bob Woodward and it is two months before the election!

Arrogant, aloof, and unprepared is how Bob Woodward portrays President Obama in his new book The Price of Politics, set to be released next week.

The book recounts Obama’s troubled relationship with Congress, from his inauguration through last summer’s failed debt-limit negotiations, with Woodward concluding, ‘It is a fact that President Obama was handed a miserable, faltering economy and faced a recalcitrant Republican opposition. But presidents work their will — or should work their will — on important matters of national business. . . . Obama has not.’

Does the mainstream media really want to go down with the S.S. Obama? Worse, can anyone who loves America more than they love progressive ideology really face the consequences of four more years? Between Dinesh D’Souza’s 2016 and the Woodward book, there really may yet be time to save the Republic. But time is getting short.

Steelworker Featured at DNC Didn’t Work for Bain.

“David Foster was never an employee of GST Steel’s Kansas City plant. He was employed by the United Steelworkers of America as their regional union director to represent GST Steel, but was not employed at our facility,” according to BC Huselton, who was head of HR at GST.

Instead, Foster was a union organizer, who negotiated for workers that did work for the company.

And no one is more disappointed about Biden’s speaking slot than Republicans, who have taken to Twitter to campaign for the gaffe-prone vice president to speak during the nationally televised 10 p.m. hour instead.

NRO: What does the president need to do to close the deal with the business community, to get their support?

Daley: I don’t think there is a business deal to be closed. My sense is that there are a lot of issues there. The economy continues to be difficult. There’s a lot of anger all the way around by people about some decisions in certain business sectors. I think the president — there is nothing in the next 60 days or 59 days, whatever is left, that, I think, the president can do to fundamentally change that relationship by so many in the business community. I think they’ve not given him a clear look. Maybe President Clinton’s comments will shake them to take a second look, I hope.

Its hard for us to make comparable sense of US politics from over here. My take is that Obama has been pretty useless, but not as catastrophically failure prone as Gillard and co. Even so its surprising that Obama still looks competitive against Romney. The Left votes Left, Black votes Black, Latino votes Latino, Gay votes Gay, Feminist votes Fascist. That revolution is going to look awfully bloody if they ever lose their unifying hate object, the white middle class male.

I think the real news is that in US politics, the Left may have just about achieved a structural, permanent majority (like Tasmania). The number of voting people on the government payroll, or on welfare, just about tops those working or otherwise self sufficient. It may be the tipping point, who knows – not even Mark Steyn. Even if its not the tipping point, its still not clear how they are going to manage the $15T debt, monetised or not. Many of the destined to be unemployed people are going to vote for the Left, but when they start dismissing the lower middle class and skilled tradesmen, they often go to the Right, and the voting part becomes less of a requirement.

The Democrats’ other strategy is to rouse the enthusiasm of their various disparate constituencies. This hasn’t worked for an incumbent Democrat since Harry Truman in 1948.

But it is something you fall back on given the nature of the Democratic party. The Republicans have always had a core constituency of people considered by themselves and others as typical Americans — Northern Protestants in the 19th century, white married Christians today — but who are by themselves less than a majority.

The Democratic party has typically been a coalition of out-groups — white southerners and big-city Catholics in the 19th century. Today, the coalition includes blacks and, to a lesser extent, Hispanics, unmarried women, members of the millennial generation, public-employee-union members, and, most important, the group that demographer Joel Kotkin dubbed “gentry liberals.”

They don’t always agree. Blacks tend to oppose same-sex marriage, while gentry liberals strongly favor it. Labor unions want the Keystone pipeline, while genteel environmentalists want to kill it.

This convention has proven how divided they are on critical issues (those elderly jewish voters in Florida will be seeing those boo’s about Jerusalem for the next 3 months).

My impression remains that this entire Dem Convention is really a ‘let’s dress up Obama for history’ party. Every speech seems to be about modifying or making excuses the past 4 years. Nothing substantial about the future at all. Oh, and if Obama’s speech tonight was supposed to rally the troops on to victory… umm, yawn.

The feeling I get is that the Democrats know he is toast but have to go through the motions.

Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the archbishop of New York and a leading Catholic-American voice opposing abortion and President Obama’s health care reform law, inserted what some saw as an anti-abortion remark into his benediction Thursday night at the Democratic National Convention.

“Thus do we praise you for the gift of life. Grant us to defend it. Life, without which no other rights are secure. We ask your benediction on those waiting to be born, that they may be welcomed and protected,” Dolan said in prayer delivered immediately following President Obama’s address accepting his party’s nomination.

Obama is out of ideas, and Clinton’s speech was unworthy of him.

Barack Obama is deeply overexposed and often boring. He never seems to be saying what he’s thinking. His speech Thursday was weirdly anticlimactic. There’s too much buildup, the crowd was tired, it all felt flat. He was somber, and his message was essentially banal: We’ve done better than you think. Who are you going to believe, me or your lying eyes?

There were many straw men. There were phrases like “the shadow of a shuttered steel mill,” which he considers writerly. But they sound empty and practiced now, like something you’ve heard in a commercial or an advertising campaign.

It was stale and empty. He’s out of juice.

His daughters have grown beautiful.

As for Joe Biden, I love him and will hear nothing against him. He’s like Democrats the way they used to be, and by that I do not mean idiotic, I mean normal—manipulative only to a normal degree, roughly aware of the facts of normal life, alert to and even respecting of such normal things as religious faith. I wish he did not insist on referring to his wife as “Dr. Jill Biden.” I’m sure she has many doctorates, but so do half the unemployed in Manhattan.

John Kerry was on fire. It was the best speech of his career. He drew blood on foreign policy: “Talk about being before it before you were against it!” Obama will take that message, on Afghanistan, into debate.

Beneath the funny hats, the sweet-faced delegates, the handsome speakers and the babies waving flags there was something disquieting. All three days were marked by a kind of soft, distracted extremism. It was unshowy and unobnoxious but also unsettling.

There was the relentless emphasis on Government as Community, as the thing that gives us spirit and makes us whole. But government isn’t what you love if you’re American, America is what you love. Government is what you have, need and hire. Its most essential duties—especially when it is bankrupt—involve defending rights and safety, not imposing views and values

It would have been better had he not spoken. Seriously. Like an aging rock star, President Obama, in a downsized venue, with downsized proposal and spewing downsized rhetoric only reminded us how far he has fallen from the heady days of 2008. The man, the agenda and the aura are faint imitations of their 2008 incarnations. And most importantly, he put forth an agenda that was entirely, and obviously, lacking, one that didn’t begin to match the demands of our time.

Even for the liberal media, it will be hard to characterize a speech this prosaic as uplifting or fresh. The crowd — you know, the people who favor abortion on demand up to birth, all paid for by the government — were thrilled at the onset, although quiet during long stretches of the speech. On TV the speech came across in large part as flat. It was frankly not as good a speech as his wife’s…

No matter how desperately the Obama team spins, there is no getting away from this simple fact: He has no credible plan to reduce the debt or intention of attacking the drivers of debt, namely entitlement spending. For those Democrats and independents who though he would eventually get serious about our most serious problem, the answer tonight was: “You’ve been had”.

The next US administration must move its embassy to Jerusalem at once. Who cares what the Palestinians say? Jerusalem is and always has been a Jewish city (except for a few centuries of usurpation by Moslem imperialists).

Yes he writes for the NYtimes, but his prediction model has been extremely accurate both for the previous election, and the Republican primaries.
