Nothing but praise for 2GB

The left may think of themselves in a positive light as defenders of the faith or something, but their disgusting behaviour over Alan Jones is beyond contempt and genuinely a matter for serious concern. This is from The Age.

Macquarie Radio Network executive chairman Russell Tate said ‘the nature, tone and volume of the reaction to Jones’ remarks, and in particular the threats being made through social media to companies advertising in Jones’ program and the disruption being caused to their businesses, have made it necessary for MRN to call some “time out”.’

‘Some simple facts need to be acknowledged.

‘There is almost universal agreement that Jones’ remarks were unacceptable, wrong and inexcusable. Alan himself acknowledged that from the moment he first advised me of them. He immediately arranged a media conference to state that publicly and apologise to the Prime Minister,’ he said.

‘Although the remarks were not made on 2GB, our position from the outset has been that a personal, unconditional apology was a necessary and appropriate response. I encouraged Alan to repeat the apology on 2GB when he first returned to air last Tuesday morning following his media conference. His apology was unambiguous and unconditional.’

Mr Tate said the threats to boycott Jones show were coming ‘almost entirely from people who do not listen to Alan Jones or 2GB at all – probably never have done and never will.’

What 2GB will now do is run Alan Jones without ads until further notice. Jones did still have advertisers but Macquarie is going to shield them from the derangement that is the specific province of the left. The leaders of the Union of Soviet SOCIALIST Republics and the members of the National SOCIALIST German Workers’ Party were all made up of these very types.

Of course they were wrong. ALP collectively doesn’t have enough shame to power a fart, let alone kill a man.

  3. Ralph Buttigieg

    G’day,

Right.. so the once great Alan Jones is now a financial liability to the station. What he should do is resign and set himself up as an internet radio personality with audience sponsorship as some US talk hosts have done. I suppose the trouble with that would be the oldies who listen to his show don’t know how to use the internet.

The Left are oblivious until the evidence becomes overwhelming.

And even then……despite Sen. Brown, their ilk they still occasionally demonstrate outside of Max Brenner stores.

I loathe Kevin Rudd’s attitude as PM and his policies but his pointed insistence of being seen to have coffee at Max Brenner during the height of the Greenslimes poisonous bds campaign considerably balanced my critique of the man.

Of course in this instance, he’s decided to resort to hypocrisy.

A two-week wonder. 2GB Management know this, and are levelling the field to start again. Advertisers will want their demographic back soon enough.

I’ve never understood how people manage to listen to Alan Jones though. Or John Laws when he was on air. I can listen (say if I’m in a pre-turned hire car) to other so-called ‘shock jocks’ and not reach for the off switch, in fact I can nod in agreement quite a bit, but the condescending tone of Alan Jones is traffic-accident inducing as I scramble to find something else or curtail sound altogether. He is inadvertently giving trophy blonde drivers a bad name.

Eh? Free speech once given up is easy to give up isn’t it!

So do you have the same standards about the ministers who exploited the situation for political advantage?

  7. I’m stuffed if I know why Jones apologised. It’s nowhere near the most offensive thing ever said about Juliar and was clearly meant to be rhetorical.

He could have easily ignored any noise about it or told them all to jam it. The advertisers would have stuck with him to avoid appearing piss weak.

  8. John

Damn socialist corporations pulling their ads.

You’re an idiot by the way.

  9. Anna Winter

Wow I am completely convinced by your words and offer up a donation to all the capitalists who were hurt by consumers exercising their terrible freedom.

  10. Entropy

Yeah I can never stomach listening to that agrarian socialist, but I noted which are the weak kneed corporations who have withdrawn their ads and rest assured they will do without my business.

  11. Token

Call me crazy, but to me this is the type of statement that crossed some important boundaries which I would think that Lefties are really serious:

Communications Minister Stephen Conroy has declared he has “unfettered legal power” over telecommunications regulation, including the ability to request Australian telcos “wear red underpants on their head”.

Strangely, lefties ignore a statement about the absolute and “unfettered legal power” by a minister and focus on boorish comments.

Fun quiz, was it the budding autocrat or radio host who apologised?

Answer: Lefties don’t care as winning one more election is more important than the freedoms earned through great cost over many centuries. Labor never apologises. Ever.

ABC is funded by whom? Why not make them subscription only? At least The Age has to sell papers.

  15. Lloyd

I’m sure a hefty proportion of irreverent Aussies thought much the same thing on first hearing of Mr Gillard’s death. I know I did.
I think Jones’s apology was meant to be an act of grace. It’s more telling that Gillard and the Left in general lack sufficient grace to accept it and move on. Their actions in this matter fit the mould they’ve cast for themselves. They are irredeemable.

I’ve put a couple of posts on the Open Thread (at 4.31pm and 5.27pm) that explain why this is nonsense, in my opinion.

Leftists ferals think they’ve “got” Jones. As usual, their anti-business economic illiteracy shines through. In particular they have no comprehension of the dynamics of the commercial radio industry. They’ve disgraced themselves again and the public are seeing it.

  17. Token

ABC is funded by whom? Why not make them subscription only? At least The Age has to sell papers.

Those carbon offsets on airlines have proven to everyone the ABC would run out of money by 15th Jan each year if it relied on the voluntary contributions of lefties.

  18. .

Wow I am completely convinced by your words and offer up a donation to all the capitalists who were hurt by consumers exercising their terrible freedom.

Consumers, aren’t, producers are being sucked in by bullshit of the likes of you who never grow up and went to political rallies instead of actually learning anything useful at university.

The boycotters have become the boycotted.

    Terrible, terrible freedom.

    Suck it up, Princess.

  19. James X Leftie

This is the difference between the left and the right – the left group together and are relentless.

The right, as this post shows, grumble on a website and get on with things.

Its time the right used social media to protest against comments like Deveny’s wish that her boss would get arse cancer – which is much worse than what Jones said.

A compilation of offensive comments from the left would be useful too.. if only to repeatedly paste it whenever a leftie shows confected outrage online.

I sent this e mail to 2GB today:
Don’t worry about the huge numbers in the online destroy Alan Jones petition. This petition is a joke, you can vote multiple times, just choose a name, any name even using the same e mail address. Jesus Christ has voted. I made this comment on Michael Smith’s blog today:
If anyone wants a laugh check out Signing off on Alan Jones http://www.quadrant.org.au/blogs/qed/2012/10/signing-off-on-alan-jones
    Yes, Skippy Kangaroo signed!
“OF ALL Australia’s many shames, few can rival the disgrace of being forced to share the continent with the likes of Alan Jones, who quite clearly needs to be silenced, ruined financially and shunned by all decent people and former advertisers. Oh, and by at least one telegenic marsupial as well, which is evident from the ever-growing list of those who have signed a much-touted online petition calling for the radio host to be gagged once and for all.”
I checked the petition out last night
and for updates you can check out Catallaxy http://catallaxyfiles.com/2012/10/06/the-media-and-mr-jones/comment-page-2/#comment-597680

  22. Amused

I thought you people were libertarians.

Jones hasn’t been locked in a prison and his words expunged from the public record. Within the limits of defamation law he is free to say what he wants to whomever will listen.

All that has happened is that lots of people have exercised their freedom to not buy from jones’ advertisers and have exercised their freedom to tell the advertisers. The advertisers have exercised their freedom to withdraw their advertising from his show.

All of us free to do and say what we want. The essence of libertarianism, I would have thought (and I’m not taking the piss).

Are you really libertarians or just right wing authoritarians who want some intellectual clothing for poorly examined political bigotry? Freedom of speech does not mean freedom from consequences. You betray your shallow understanding of libertarian philosophy if you think otherwise.

  23. Amused

Actually upon retreading this I think Steve is taking the piss. He’s got a spectacular Godwin at the end which isn’t that far from Basil Fawlty “this is exactly how nazi Germany started” (see the Waldorf salad episode.)

Nice one Steve. I feel a bit of a Charlie for being taken in. Keep up the good work of making the right wing authoritarians look like the idiots they are.

Jenna Price is ‘thrilled’ at Jones news.
A Jenna Price joined UTS Journalism in 2008 and is the undergraduate coordinator of the journalism major and is also the internship coordinator. A Jenna Price writes for the ABC. A Jenna Price once worked for Fairfax. Jenna ticks all the boxes it seems.

  25. Tom

Jenna Price is a political activist who deserves no place in in journalism, especially not journalism financed by the public, which is meant to be impartial and to reflect the public interest. That a staff member in the taxpayer-funded UTS journalism faculty is campaigning to bring down a government critic on behalf of the ruling political party is outrageous and corrupt.

  26. Amused

I see your enthusiasm for freedom of speech does not extend to people whose views differ from yours. Stackja gets a snippy little piece posted that conforms to the dominant groupthink whereas mine languishes (I suspect forever) in moderation.

Ok. It’s your website. Unlike you I understand and respect property rights. You are free to do with your blog whatever you like. And I’m free to think it’s become a caricature of its former self where libertarian ideals are espoused but authoritarianism rules.

    I’ll leave you to it.

  27. Viva

I’ve never understood how people manage to listen to Alan Jones though.

Me neither. He does tend to gabble.

Twitter is well named – it is beginning to remind me of Hitchcock’s “The Birds” with hoards of commenters pecking the chosen victim to death.

  28. Will

There is almost universal agreement that Jones’ remarks were unacceptable, wrong and inexcusable.

I thought they were funny. Tasteless perhaps, but funny.

They would be even funnier if John Gillard was a member of the AWU or HSU, but he was probably in the Federation.

  29. Chris

val – perhaps your time would be better spent inflating the number of signatures on the pro Alan Jones change.org petition

    http://www.change.org/en-AU/petitions/2gb-do-not-sack-alan-jones

It has a whole 48 signatures so far!

A lot is made of Jones’ 1-200,000 audience. But compared to other media thats not really that significant. The 7:30 report for example averages around 700,000 viewers each night. So its not surprising that even though the listeners to the Alan Jones show may be very supportive of his views, advertisers are more concerned about the response of the 20 odd million other people in the country.

I think it will all blow over eventually. In a few months time many sponsors will back (though some like Mercedes Benz have said they will never return). Essentially it ends up being a large public driven fine from reduced revenue for the broadcaster and Jones who owns a significant shareholding in 2GB.

Does anyone need any more explanation why we should de-fund the ABC?

Several weeks ago, Antony Loewenstein disgraced himself.

during the Q&A Jonathan Hoffman asked Loewenstein how many people Loewenstein thinks should die for this one-state solution, that Loewenstein wants so much, to come into existence. The idea being that Israelis are not going to vote themselves out of existence, so presumably such a state could come about only by force involving more bloodshed.

As Loewenstein wasn’t quite answering the question he was pressed further by Hoffman as to how many people Loewenstein thinks should die. First, Frank Barat, the Chairman, answered “200,000″ (here is more on Barat). Then Loewenstein answered “Six million. That’s my answer. Write that down.“

Andrew Bolt observed that this career-long fool was still treated as an honoured guest by the ABC.

Last night, Loewenstein was invited to appear on the ABC once again, discussing…. Wait for it…. Some offensive comments that Alan Jones made.

  31. Jason

Jones is a bully and is finally getting some of his own back. As someone else said on this forum, “suck it up, princess”. Sponsors will go where the money is and will make their own decisions, lefies and righties will exercise their right to free speech and see how far it gets them. This time around, the lefties have had a win and the bully has been taken down a peg. I imagine he’ll be back, but hopefully he’ll remember his manners next time.

  32. stackja

Chris the ‘pro Alan Jones change.org petition’ is off and message is:

Uh oh. The server is misbehaving.

  37. Super D

So Jones will now be ad free….. So the result of all this handwringing to get less Jones on the radio is more Jones on the radio.

Wouldn’t it be interesting if as a result of going ad free Jones increases his audience and the ads immediately following Jones slot go up in price.

  38. Thumbnail

Alan Jones just said that Mercedes-Benz had cancelled its contract with 2GB two weeks before the ‘shame’ comments were made, and has totally misrepresented the issue.
Should it be against the law to apply market pressure to a political opponent with a bald-faced lie?
Alsn Jone has also stated that Mercedes-Benz has publicly misrepresented the nature of the contract for the vehicle that Alan Jones drives. The vehicle is simply a company vehicle provided by his employer.
    This is a disgrace.
I call it The Political Persecution of Alan Jones.

    My entry in the petition:

Yes it is quite likely all due to a very small bunch of leftard nerds who know how to automate submissions to on-line petitons that have no scamming controls (eg duplicate IP detection) switched on. They are also using (illegal) spamming tools to deluge the mail boxes of individuals.

Isn’t the right to choose products and services one of the fundamental tenets of our free market?

Consumers have every right to reject products endorsed by bigots.

If these same consumers want to get organised, and place a facility on-line to make this rejection easier, and make it public, what’s the problem? Isn’t that called free speech?

Of course, this issue is fundamentally about power, not free speech.

The tables have been turned by social media. The same harnessing of the new media has brought down totalitarian governments in the Middle East. It’s a healthy phenomenon. It empowers people who previously had no voice.

It’s only when the hip pocket starts to be assaulted that indignation reigns. Listen carefully, and you will hear the clucking of chickens coming home to roost – the bully is “victimised” – Priceless!
