Well folks, it is almost time. Voting for the temporary positions on the UN Security Council will begin at 1:00am (AEST), Friday 19 October.
I still expect, and hope, that Australia will be defeated by Finland and Luxembourg. We will have dodged a bullet. No doubt Labor will blame Abbott for the loss.
So let’s hope for the double: Obama to lose the debate, Australia to lose the vote.

I totally dont want to be represented at the UN security council, its bad enough being a member of that ship of fools.
But how much has it already cost?
Carr at least (I suspect others too) have already laid the groundwork for shifting blame for failure. (Hey, at least this time they are showing some foresight.)
It is all down to the newest force known to physics: Negativity. Apparently Abbott is a pole from which all the field lines emanate, and his presence on the Earth can:
- Cause Labor governments to stuff everything up
- Force radio announcers to say cruel things about dead parents and
- Frustrate the deliberations of the UN.
Dunno, Julia’s uranium to India push will have secured them…..
and is SE Asia going to vote for Finland?
Be interesting to see if there is any block Muslim vote. Scandinavian is a good Muslim forelock tugger and will therefore expect some payoff.
At least we must get Bambang.
Bloody hell…what if NZ votes for their ideologically similar defenceless cousins in Luxembourg……
What I would really like to know is how come S Kates and his drop-kick side-kick Samuel j have so much time on their hands. Their non-stop loopy posts are so one sided as to make them less than useless. Sadly bullshit it not confined to the extreme left. Let’s all lift our game and try for a little more balance in these posts.
I find it hard to believe we would lose out to Finland and Luxemburg. And it would help rid us of Krudd.
Entropy – how will it help rid us of Krudd? The Government can’t afford the numbers to appoint him as Ambassador to the UN
He would just resign then and campaign for Abbott. He owes the ALP nothing.
Good point though
What a black day for Australia if that happens. How can the Right hate its own country so much to hope it is defeated in this effort? Really appalling.
Why would you not want a seat at the table? Would you also recommend we drop our seat the G20, Asean, APEC?
@SteveC The conversation is about the UN.
and yes @Gareth I for one see our continuing involvement with the UN as a stain and a financial drain.
I hope we win. I hope we have a seat for Abbott to then use to help defend Israel.
Because the UN these days is the politics of the lowest denominator, with our vote worth the same as the most clapped out kleptocracy. And if the world turns to shit, it will be the yanks with a supporting act from the rest of the anglosphere that will save the sorry arses of the rest of the world, only to get resented for it.
Or maybe get a strongly worded letter from some UN slush-council.
ASEAN?
SteveC – no I don’t think Australia should withdraw from the G20. But we are not in ASEAN. As for APEC? Perhaps. Also we should withdraw from the OECD.
But the SC position is a net loser for Australia as I explained in an earlier post.
As for Hammy – I’m unpatriotic because I oppose the bid, just as I opposed the bid for the World Cup and the Olympic Games.
I’m just more careful with taxpayers’ money.
At least we’ll do better than our World Cup bid. Probably.
Kero
Because the UN is basically a despicable organization. We should withdraw.
hammyracist:
What a dog hammyracist is. The biggest insult he can think of involves comparing Australia to a black person.
At least we aren’t up against Qatar, m0nty.
Correct m0nty.
And if we do happen to ‘lose’ and actually gain the seat our representatives better be fuck*ng getting the Afghanistan Terms of Engagement put back to a war footing.
Jew bashing – it’s okay for a little while when you’re chasing a temporary seat on the UN Security Council.
