Apparently this Craig Thompson chap has just had his house raided by the police. This is from The Age Online:
Police have raided the Bateau Bay home of embattled Federal MP Craig Thomson.
Just after 7am the NSW police executed a search warrant at the central coast home of Mr Thomson and his wife, Zoe.
NSW police obtained the warrant on behalf of the Victorian police who are investigating allegations that Mr Thomson improperly used Health Services Union funds to spend on prostitutes, air travel, entertainment and cash withdrawals in excess of $100,000.
Detective Sergeant John Tyquin from the Victorian police fraud and extortion squad was one of half a dozen officers who searched Mr Thomson’s house this morning.
In May this year, Mr Thomson declined a request from Victorian police to nominate the people he claimed had tried to frame him by setting him up with prostitutes.
Last week Fair Work Australia announced it had launched a civil prosecution of Mr Thomson in relation to the misuse of union funds.
A Labor MP apparently.

Now it’s time to raid Julia Gillard’s house …

Tom, I reckon the use of ‘in excess of $100,000′ is a signal that Shagger’s trial will be in the Victorian County Court (as the Magistrate Court hears theft charges for amounts under $100k). The amount stolen has crossed from minor crime to more serious crime.

I would prefer the impending union investigation remain a whisper, an insinuation. Otherwise the unions will use it as an excuse to dock some pay for more electioneering. That’s probably why the journalists are starting to talk about it – as a precursor for the unions firing into ‘save the furniture’ election campaign mk2.
Personally I’d love to fund a re-run of the ‘your rights at work’ campaign, but where the shocked mother of two finds out her union is bankrupt because the officials shagged their way through all the money.
brc
24 Oct 12 at 1:09 pm
The Royal Commission is the way to go.
Terms of Reference include:-
• Enquire into the Financial Governance processes of unions, including but not limited to the HSU (2000 – 2012) and the AWU (1992 – 1998), to establish whether union governance meets “community standards”. Lefties love “community standards” as a vague benchmark for whacking business with, but will hate it when turned back on them.
• Enquire as to whether any union official gained personal advantage not commensurate with …. wait for it …. “community expectations”. The “community expectations” test will neatly side-step the “Barrie Cassidy Defence” which is …. “if you have no rules, you can’t break the rules”. Personal advantage is defined as financial, material, unpaid or discounted goods or services, payments to associated third parties/organisations/political bodies
• Enquire into whether unions or individual union members/office bearers are or have been associated with criminal organisations or individuals, and have used these associations to advantage themselves or others using illegal means
• Establish whether Unions have lost a “social licence to operate” (another lefty ‘high-bar’ test imposed on businesses like Gunns) due to corrupt, illegal or improper activity
• If any of the above results in adverse findings, recommend legislated changes to Union funding, elections, reporting, governance and controls to appropriately reflect “community expectations”
Any suggestion of a Royal Ccommission would, of course, be portrayed as an “attack on working Australians”, but if Abbott holds the line that it is not about workers but about Unions, and he only wants Unions subjected to the same standards as businesses, sporting clubs, schools etc, then I think he is on a winner.
Leigh Lowe
24 Oct 12 at 1:14 pm
I can’t see how a royal commission wouldn’t be seen as a winner. Once they get into government they can hang out williamson and thomson to dry, spill their filthy secrets into the public, and let the community make their decision from there. There are very few people who wouldn’t be disgusted with their behaviour when the full sordid details are brought to light.
But it’s all for after the election if you ask me. No need to bring it up as an election issue, there are plenty of fronts to attack on.

Why is he so relaxed and confident, or at least in denial? It’s fun to speculate, so here are two possibilities.
1. He has to have story his kids can hang onto for the rest of their lives, ie, that he was set up, or was covering for others and for the sake of the Labor party he took the rap. (For one, I can respect this motive.)
2. That his knowledge of who in the Labor and union movement used the prostitutes (and/or obtained other benefits) will in the end either (a) insulate him from charges, or (more likely) (b) give him something to trade in exchange for immunity from prosecution.
I rather hope it’s 2(b).
