China, Colorado – what’s the difference?

This is more than just a conceptual error though it is a conceptual error as well. Obama was speaking in Colorado and was of course reading from his teleprompter, which said:

I want those manufactured here in C…

And when he saw the “C” which was the first letter of Colorado he just went ahead and interpolated China because he doesn’t really know where he is or what he’s saying. He’s just reading from a script someone else has written. Either that or he’s ignorant and vacant between the ears.

Yes i do think he is, some people may call him a great orator, but he is little more than and adequate public speaker, mouthing the words of others with the occaisional snark & rictus grin thrown in for effect. An absolute lightweight.

  15. Paul Ryan delivered his first major policy address [VIDEO 27mins] since becoming the Republican Vice Presidential nominee. He made remarks on upward mobility and the economy at Cleveland State University in Cleveland, Ohio.

No Republican has won the White House without carrying Ohio.

So what is government’s duty when it comes to the institutions of civil society? Basically, it is to secure their rights, respect their purposes, and preserve their freedom.

Nothing undermines the essential and honorable work these groups do quite like the abuse of government power. Take what happened this past January, when the Department of Health and Human Services issued new rules requiring Catholic hospitals, charities and universities to violate their deepest principles. Never mind your own conscience, they were basically told – from now on you’re going to do things the government’s way.

This mandate isn’t just a threat to religious charities. It’s a threat to all those who turn to them in times of need. In the name of strengthening our safety net, this mandate and others will weaken it.

  17. Avik Roy, Forbes: The Real ‘War on Women’ is Being Waged by Obamacare

In 2008, women accounted for three-fifths of all Americans enrolled in Medicaid, our government-run health insurance program for the poor. Medicaid is under enormous strain because its costs grow faster than state tax revenues do. As a result, state governments are cutting services to women on Medicaid, which already provides the worst health outcomes in the country.

Instead of fixing this problem by improving the existing Medicaid program, Obamacare severely worsens Medicaid’s structure, by shoving an additional 11 to 17 million people—disproportionately men—into Medicaid. This means that state governments will have to divert even more resources away from the women who are already in the program.

Many of Roy’s arguments are made by Ryan in his very good speech linked to above

He has a sort of outsiders eye for the meaningful, I dont quite know why, and its sort of consistent with my gut feeling.

Its not really close, its Romney to win comfortably.

  21. Some polling mathematics
Posted on October 23, 2012 by mike If you take the current (October 23, 2012, 5:31 pm EDT) national polls that go into the Real Clear Politics average for the Presidential Race and you simply weight them in terms of their sample size (i.e. correct them for the MoE or Margin of Error), you get something different from the stated RCP average. What you get is:

    Romney 48.7

    Obama 46.8

    difference (R) +1.9

Just sayin’. Not gettin’ cocky. Just sayin’.

UPDATE: and the margin of error is 0.9.

  32. It’ll take a crystal ball to predict exactly how many voters turn out for each side at the polls, but I think that you can take it as a given that numbers voting for the Wun will be lower than in 2008. That immediately biases the Polls against Romney, as almost all the polls persist in weighting the partisan voters according to the last election results, that is, they’re all D+7 or +8. That Romney is ahead in some polls despite this weighting suggests that Romney should win, and fairly comfortably at that. It’s still not too late to get Romney at better than 5/2 against (ie Betfair has Romney at 2.86), which in a two-horse race is gift odds.

Lol. Yep he’s Einstein. Just darker skin otherwise a dead ringer.

1.) Obama thinks ATMs cause unemployment — No, really, he does! That’s not a joke headline. He said it out loud in front of the whole world and everything. On yesterday’s Today Show, Obama told Ann Curry his brilliant theory about why the economy hasn’t been doing so well since he became president: “There are some structural issues with our economy where a lot of businesses have learned to become much more efficient with a lot fewer workers. You see it when you go to a bank and you use an ATM, you don’t go to a bank teller, or you go to the airport and you’re using a kiosk instead of checking in at the gate.” That’s right, the Smartest President Ever just said innovation is a job-killer. His next step, presumably, will be to demonize the Republicans for making such deep cuts to the Department of Buggy Whips. Hey, why is the President of the United States blaming machines for unemployment … on TELEVISION? Doesn’t he care about all those out-of-work town criers?

Not plain unedited quotes with some context you couldn’t. Unless you count his references to his mainstream christian belief as evidence of ‘dumbness’ like the US media did. GWB was not rhetorically glib, but his public statements were usually thoughtful, interesting and indicated wide reading (apart from the Bible!) and general interest in things. In contrast, Obama just mouths cliches, much of it he has never obviously never thought much about.

Most of the GWB “gaffes” were confected “desk calendar” mythology or revolved around him putting an extra syllable in “nucalear”.
On the other hand the duffus currently occupying 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue makes cock-up after cock-up which are all ignored by the MSM under the guise of “respect for the office of President” … a quaint concept rediscovered in 2008.

  87. Nihilist – you ask: do I even know what a nihilist is? Well you fool, it so happens I do. My first husband was a university medalist in philosophy and we did a lot of pillow talk until things got very post-modern on us. I used to carry around Thus Spoke Zarathustra in my backpack, and I am not unfamiliar with the influence of Heidegger. Shit, I’ve even read Baudrillard and Foucault.

Let Wikipedia refresh everyone with your avatar wankery:

Nihilism ( /ˈnaɪ.ɨlɪzəm/ or /ˈniː.ɨlɪzəm/; from the Latin nihil, nothing) is the philosophical doctrine suggesting the negation of one or more putatively meaningful aspects of life. Most commonly, nihilism is presented in the form of existential nihilism, which argues that life is without objective meaning, purpose, or intrinsic value.[1] Moral nihilists assert that morality does not inherently exist, and that any established moral values are abstractly contrived. Nihilism can also take epistemological or metaphysical/ontological forms, meaning respectively that, in some aspect, knowledge is not possible, or that reality does not actually exist.

The term nihilism is sometimes used in association with anomie to explain the general mood of despair at a perceived pointlessness of existence that one may develop upon realising there are no necessary norms, rules, or laws.[2] Movements such as Futurism and deconstruction,[3] among others, have been identified by commentators as “nihilistic” at various times in various contexts.

Nihilism is also a characteristic that has been ascribed to time periods: for example, Jean Baudrillard and others have called postmodernity a nihilistic epoch,[4] and some Christian theologians and figures of religious authority have asserted that postmodernity[5] and many aspects of modernity[3] represent a rejection of theism, and that rejection of their theistic doctrine entails nihilism.

Go take a running post-modern jump.

Mr Obama’s a moron. Economically. He has guided his ship of state for 4 years and in doing so has increased Federal debt by over 100%. Spending seed corn works until you run out of seed corn. At some stage in the second Obama term the lenders who bought Treasuries will sell them, fearing losses to come Spanish-style.

We already are seeing signs of this as the Chinese are sniffing around after hard assets like gold and like Cobby Station. Treasury auction prices will rise to a point where the already ridiculously overspent non-existent Federal budget will melt down due to increased interest payments. Mr Obama has shown not one single sign of understanding this process.

In that respect he is a moron. And he’s even worse without his teleprompter.

And by the way, Steve didn’t just post this as a simple “gotcha, you made a mistake.” The point – according to the post – is that the error happened because Obama was reading from a script someone else had written for him. The words were not his, the point was not one he thought of, or decided to make.

The criticism of Obama as teleprompter man isn’t just about the fact that he uses teleprompters – the criticism underneath the joking is that he isn’t very bright and his best moments come from scripts written by others.

  126. This is why people take the p**s out of Obama:

From Jodi Kantor’s The Obamas, page 66:

Obama had always had a high estimation of his ability to cast and run his operation. When David Plouffe, his campaign manager, first interviewed for a job with him in 2006, the senator gave him a warning: “I think I could probably do every job on the campaign better than the people I’ll hire to do it,” he said. “It’s hard to give up control when that’s all I’ve known.” Obama said nearly the same thing to Patrick Gaspard, whom he hired to be the campaign’s political director. “I think I’m a better speechwriter than my speechwriters,” Obama told him. “I know more about policies on any particular issue than my policy directors. And I’ll tell you right now that I’m gonna think I’m a better political director than my political director.”

This is not some long-ago sentiment, or momentary lapse into egoism. Michelle Obama declared at a Democratic-party fundraiser in California last June:

“He reads every word, every memo, so he is better prepared than the people briefing him,” she said. “This man doesn’t take a day off.”

It takes unbelievable hubris to make such a statement.

  140. No matter the persuasion, if you make it as the US President, clearly you have some smarts about you.

This is true. Most successful politicians must have an above average intelligence. It’s a cognitively demanding job. Even just keeping track of the lies must take some smarts. They’re not genius smart because then they wouldn’t be able connect with average people, but they are smart.

The problem is that they have massive egos coupled with being fairly smart. Often they don’t understand their limitations. Maybe when he was a kid, little Obama was better than his classmates at spelling or whatnot, so he thought to himself, hey, I’m smarter than these people, I should be able to tell them what to do and how to live their lives.

Now, because they are smart but not super smart, they don’t understand that things don’t work that way. No one—not even a genius—has enough brainpower to direct society and the economy. The distributed intelligence of society counts for a lot. The politician may be smarter in raw IQ terms than, say, some carpet layer, but the carpet layer knows more about the business of carpets than the politician. But yet the politician feels compelled to tell the carpet layer how to live his life.

Lots of lefties like you, Nihilist, are in this same boat. You are kind of smart, but not as smart as you think you are. And because of this state of affairs, because of this lack of understanding of how the world works, people like you and your buddy Obama end up do disastrously moronic things.

    (bit of cut and paste)

The November elections will determine the direction of US climate policy — and therefore also energy policy and the pace of economic growth: jobs, standards of living, budget deficits and inflation. Obama has already promised to make climate change the centerpiece of his concern — with all that implies: “Green” energy policy, linked to loss of jobs (Keystone pipeline disapproval), rising gas prices (ethanol mandates), and crony capitalism (Solyndra).

By contrast, Romney is a climate skeptic — and Ryan has been quite outspoken: the perfect anti-Gore. The science supports Romney-Ryan — notwithstanding the UN-IPCC, and the bulk of the climate scientists living high on the hog on government grants.

Personally, I thought if he(?) wants to play contrarian, this was a pretty weak attack. Imagine everyone admits that yes, it was a bit of juvenile low-brow partisan yukking. Well, damn. Like no-one ever does that.

There are plenty of strong political and ideological positions presented here that I would have thought would be much richer targets for someone of a left-wing persuasion, than the fact that people made fun of Barack Obama.

If Obama entered Harvard or Columbia overtly as an overseas student (eg a scholarship) then he would either be dishonest or disqualified to be President. Catch 22.

  155. I didn’t mean to suggest that carpet layers are dumb. My point is that even if you had a carpet layer of average intelligence, they would still know more about their patch than a politician who is of above average intelligence. Now multiply that situation by the millions of people in the population. The politician is hopelessly outclassed by the distributed intelligence of society. Any decisions the politician makes that affect society can therefore easily turn out to be moronic in effect, no matter how smart they may be.

dd – Nihilist Phill unfortunately has not debated the economic issue. Obama managed to outdo Harry Reid, who has illegally failed to pass or even propose a Federal budget for 3 years and presides over a Federal deficit of 40% of government expenditure. Obama did propose a budget. He managed to get exactly zero votes in both the House and the Senate, both sides voted it down unanimously.

This alone equals 1st order economic moron. Even Wayne Swan understands the need for some fiscal responsibility.

Rudd also thought he was smarter than everyone else. Two peas in a pod, egomaniacs who play everyone and think they got where they are through genius. I’ve met a few heads of agencies who were the same. Their brain cells create a wonderful fantasy memory of their brilliance, while carefully scrubbing away the mental images of the many times they stabbed people in the back, stole credit and the many cocks they sucked.

  161. The Kenyan smart? Smart dude Larry Summers doesn’t seem to have met his match.

In his new book on the Obama economic team, Ron Suskind quotes former administration official Larry Summers complaining: “We’re home alone. There’s no adult in charge. Clinton would never have made these mistakes.”

Put aside the misbegotten nostalgia for Bill Clinton, whose new status as an elder statesman wipes from memory his bouts of reckless immaturity. The Summers comment (subsequently denied, of course) stands as the best summation of the current occupant of the White House, who constantly congratulates himself on his high-minded leadership without exercising any.

  163. That wasn’t the point. What happened is that Trump backtracked. They’ve got damaging material on Obama of some sort, and Trump fired a warning shot to the Obama camp, who were about to descend into gutter-level attacks on Romney.

The message was “don’t go there.”

That’s an interesting game. If the Kenyan release he’s losing does he go after Romney with that gutter stuff or not?

And if Romney thinks he’s winning does he assume the Kenyan will go for broke and have Trump push the transcripts?

It’s obvious now that Trump must have the college stuff and it isn’t pretty. This stuff is going to come out in the next two weeks.

  169. Gaffes by politicians of the right are evidence for the ‘conservatives are stupid’ meme; gaffes by politicians of the left are mere slips of the tongue. Most of Romney’s gaffes aren’t actually gaffes, they’re just instances of clumsy wording.

I think picking up on minor verbal mishaps by either side is juvenile. Unless it reveals something substantial about the pollie, I think very little should be read into it.

This is the sort of shit that makes politicians act like moronic robots, spouting pre-tested lines without any reference to real questions thrown at them. Every small slip of the tongue is treated like a revelation from God at Mount Sinai and they are hounded to death about it.
