“Your First Time” – from down under

It is disappointing that the Americans insist on giving credit for the conception behind the “Your First Time” ads directed at young women voters to the Russian President none other than Vladimir Putin when the credit really should go to Sarah Hanson-Young from our very own Australian Green Party. This is from the 2010 Australian election and it is the same idea right down to putting it under the heading, “Your First Time”, the exact same name used in the American Democrat ad.

We can thus see the idea has travelled from the Green Party in Australia to the Democrats in the US, via the election ad for the former head of the KGB as President of Russia. The ad has thus shown up on three different continents, as wide apart as one could possibly travel, but based on the usual empty rhetoric of the deep left.

The deep left always targets the shallow and uninformed who are clueless about the implications of voting for such people. Since the media is itself part of the deep left it does not so much get targeted as does the targeting. But here we have a series of ads directed at the shallow and uninformed – in this case women young enough to be voting for the first time. The world is crashing around our heads, the economy is ruining their very own futures, foreign relations are in massive disrepair with a genuinely misogynist jihad on the rise. But in the US young women are being asked to vote on the narrowest imaginable series of issues that are in no way whatsoever under any likelihood to be changed irrespective of who is elected president, these being the availability of free birth control and abortion virtually on demand.

But never mind all that. What I am raising here is a matter for national pride. These are ads that have had their origin right here in Australia. We have been able to influence such giants in the world as Vladimir Putin and Barack Obama. And if you would like to see the full details of the genealogy of this descent from SH-Y to BHO perhaps via VP, you can read the full article here at Quadrant Online.

Some additional notes: Daddy Dave has advised that some of the irregular readers who have been guided to this post from Powerline may not have appreciated the ironical intent of the text both here and at Quadrant Online. I can see his point. It’s too late now anyway since my 24 hours on the Powerline Picks has now ended but it was uncommonly exciting to have seen it there. And I was aware that it is possible to read the original post – although less so than at Quadrant Online which was the the next link in the chain) – as showing genuine pride in such idiocy but I didn’t really think it mattered. The bloggers at Powerline could obviously see what I was getting at but what I thought would be interesting was for the Americans to recognise that Obama’s campaign team had plagiarised the ads, merely changing the content but stealing the theme. To say that the ads had been plagiarised from Putin was interesting in a pallid sort of way but since the text was in Russian the parallel was less obvious. To see the Australian original ought to have been astonishing.

Moreover, today we had some Russian friends over to the house and they translated the text on the top line of Putin’s ad and it really is the Russian for “Your First Time”! Well then, it is extraordinary. The Russians first and then Obama second really have taken up the same theme and stolen it from Sarah Hanson-Young. And it was only here on Catallaxy in Australia that this was recognised, in a progression when I first put up the original post, then when Token spotted the parallel with SH-Y and finally when the Putin ad was spotted by Infidel Tiger. It’s why reading blogsites like this can be far more interesting than just picking up the paper or watching the news because of the way in which it is interactive. And if there are people who have read the blog and didn’t see that it was not meant to be read straight but was specifically designed to contain a full measure of ironic intent, well that’s just the way it will have to be.

  22. The left are all in a tizz over it.

What Reagan was trying to do in Illinois, Michigan and Ohio was to harvest usually Democratic blue-collar votes — the consistent target of his personal campaigning in the Great Lakes states. Whenever he is near voters who might possibly be Democrats, Reagan likes to remind them that he came from that side of the political tracks.

On Thursday night, at a working class bar in Bayonne, N.J., Reagan said, “I know what it’s like to pull the Republican lever for the first time, because I used to be a Democrat myself, and I can tell you it only hurts for a minute and then it feels just great.”

And that was it. A one-liner in a bar that was reported by a newspaper. Mind you, nothing else was said about. Was it really sexual nuance back in 1980?

  31. With all due respect, as an American, I have a hard time putting “giants in the world” and “Obama” in the same sentence.

Reagan’s comment had nothing to do with sex – I remember him saying it. It WAS a big deal for lifelong Democrats to vote for a Republican. Plus, he needed to give them the “I was like you – I did it and I lived to tell”. I don’t recall Reagan ever making any sort of sexual-innuendo or even put-down: that was part of his style. He just “never went there”.

  32. Having plenty of scientist friends – yes, the average scientist is just as shortsighted, greedy, money-grubbing, insecure as everyone else.

At least in the US, only about 5% of grants are ever awarded, so it becomes highly political. Friends of mine who do environmental research say that it became clear years ago that there was always money available to prove AGW existed, and none to prove that it didn’t, so that’s what they did (even if they didn’t believe it, they still had to eat).

And of course if there *is* AGW (or at least people believe it exists), then you get lots of interviews with politicians, on the TV, etc. Nothing will get you anonymity faster than saying “Umm, actually, there’s not a problem – you can get on with your daily affairs”.

  49. Lets just hope his politics have changed. Fingers crossed.

In 1970, Republican party bosses nominated Mitt Romney’s mother Lenore for the U.S. Senate in Michigan. Lenore was anti-Vietnam war, reluctantly in favor of legalizing abortion (at the time, a federal crime), pro-environment, and pro-national health care. Her 23-year old son worked tirelessly for her campaign, more than he had ever worked for his father. Lenore’s ideas, and her approach to politics and people, seems to have influenced her son the most.

Lenore Romney’s senate nomination was partly a result of Republican insider politics. George Romney, former Michigan governor, and at one time, dominating front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination, was serving unhappily in the Nixon Administration as Secretary of Housing & Urban Development and Nixon wanted him out. Instead of running himself, George Romney decided that his wife would make the better candidate.

After a contentious Republican primary, Lenore became Michigan’s first female candidate for national office. If elected, she would have been the third woman to serve in the U.S. Senate.

  70. This is fucking hilarious.

We’ve always known that the original birthers were Democrats. Phillip Berg, a disgruntled Hillary supporter, filed the first lawsuit demanding that Obama produce his mysterious birth certificate. And now with the blockbuster news from Breitbart.com, we learn that Obama himself was the very first Obama birther.
It turns out that Obama claimed he was Kenya-born before he claimed he was Hawaii-born.
“The great thing about irony,” writes David Foster Wallace, “is that it splits things apart, gets up above them so we can see the flaws and hypocrisies[.]”
Breitbart News obtained a 1991 promotional booklet put together by Obama’s literary agency, Acton & Dystel, which lists the then-Harvard Law grad as “born in Kenya and raised in Indonesia and Hawaii.”
The promotional booklet continues with Obama’s biography:

Barack Obama, the first African-American president of the Harvard Law Review, was born in Kenya and raised in Indonesia and Hawaii. The son of an American anthropologist and a Kenyan finance minister, he attended Columbia University and worked as a financial journalist and editor for Business International Corporation. He served as project coordinator in Harlem for the New York Public Interest Research Group, and was Executive Director of the Developing Communities Project in Chicago’s South Side. His commitment to social and racial issues will be evident in his first book, Journeys in Black and White [the title was changed].
Former Speaker of the House Tip O’Neill, Ralph Nader, sports stars Joe Montana and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and 89 other clients also appear with their respective biographies in the 36-page booklet.

Breitbart News spoke with Edward Acton of Acton & Dystel, who indicated that the non-athletes were “probably” approached “to approve the text as presented.” Apparently, the agency felt the need to at least get the approval of its more scholarly clients. Obama, of course, was president of the Harvard Law Review. Translation: Obama either wrote or approved his write-up.
In the publishing world, it’s commonplace for authors to control their own bios. In the unlikely scenario that Obama didn’t approve the text, would the agency have continued to list Obama as Kenya-born until 2007 on its website? Well, it did, and no one corrected the record until Obama’s presidential aspirations became apparent.

  75. We don’ t really know if they are real, as the Kenyan won’t say.

I’m with Snopes until they got rid of them. They’re undetermined.

  76. The rewarding thing about fleeced’s contribution above is that it will forevere link Catallaxy with the lunar right conspiracy theorsists in web searches.

  77. Steve K, you might have to add a disclaimer that you’re being sarcastic about the national pride bit, and Obama being a giant. Some of our first-time American visitors seem to be taking you at face value.

  78. It is disappointing that the Americans insist on giving credit for the conception behind the “Your First Time” ads

Well for better or for worse, you’ve managed to rectify that

  79. It’s fairly obvious the photos are not for real (well they are real photos, but there is no evidence whatsoever they are Ann Dunham). And to continue to post them puts you in the same class as the lowlifes that originally posted them.

People who believe that stuff live in an alternative universe along with Donald Trump. Have a look at “Dreams from my real father” if you want to see how loopy the pushers of the photos are.
I thought you were brighter than that, JC. But ot appears I was mistaken.

Do you know where the photos were purported to have been taken?

As I say, if you believe that stuff, then my contact with the large buckets of cash in Nigeria is keen to talk to you.

  81. SteveC, what are your thoughts on the President’s failure to provide assistance to US personnel in Benghazi while under attack after repeated requests for assistance, which ensured the deaths of Woods and Doherty and probably Stevens?

  82. You go first d-b, what are your thoughts on the photos posted by Fleeced and given lukewarm support by JC and CL?

  83. SteveC, Americans obviously didn’t care as much about those photos as you do – since they were circulating before the 2008 election and obviously made not a jot of difference.

I’m a little concerned as to why you’re so fixated on them though, to tell the truth. Does Kimberly know about this?

  84. Sorry, but I take the deaths of an Ambassador, a foreign service officer, and the men tasked with their protection, the failure to answer repeated requests for assistance, and the subsequent dissembling and lies of this President and his Administration more seriously, than your offended sensibility.

  85. …subsequent dissembling and lies of this President …

If Obama wins the election and, despite the cover up, it is subsequently found that HE was the one who gave the order not to send help to Libya on 9/11, then he will be forced to resign in disgrace.

    Step forward President Biden!

Someone should make that clear to the American public.

  87. I’ve put some additional notes into the post itself and will repeat the same here:

  88. The snopes article on the purported Ann Dunham Obama Soetero pictures initially stated that the photos were of Marcy Moore, an artiste known to have posed for similar saucy photos. However, following comparisons by connoisseurs of the female form, they withdrew this statement and left the matter as undetermined. They certainly are not of Marcy Moore. The linked article contains unsubstantiated claims of when and where the pics were shot, but short of someone actually owning up to taking them and having the negatives, the truth will never be known.
