It’s about Obama’s auto bailout and how Chrysler has sold Jeep to FIAT who will build the cars in China.
My favourite comment on the election in the last two days was from someone who knew Detroit was going to lose the World Series (which they did in four straight games) because they had been endorsed by Obama. As he explained, everything Obama supports screws up. As I say, a week to go.

Hard to understand why this is good – sounds like protectionism.

The point is not where Jeeps should be built, and who should own the company but is a direct response to Obama’s continuing attack on Romney that he was complicit in relocating American jobs offshore. So here we have Obama’s supposed great accomplishment in saving the auto industry but as it turns out, not only has it not saved many of those jobs after all, not only is production of Jeeps going offshore but to cap it all, the production may end up in China which, according to Romney’s campaign, cheats in the way it competes. A very effective ad for Michigan, I think.

I think Romney is bullshitting about being tough on China. It’s just a campaign ploy. He’s basically a free trader.

He will label China a currency manipulator on Day 1
That will happen and so far as it goes that is no bad thing.

Steve – I think you’re reading too much into this. A man who promises to ‘save’ Detroit with Lee Iacocca supporting his position is not a good candidate. How can you possibly support such a position? He will be an Obama-lite president. In fact on this he is promising to outflank Obama on the left!.

how are China manipulating their own currency exactly. It’s undervalued and has been for a long time. This gives US consumers the opportunity to buy cheap goods. Furthermore that charge could also be leveled against the US with it QEing and zero interest rate policy.
I’ve always maintained Romney’s China policy is crap. But I also thought he’s lying.

After the Obama Admin & the Democrats got accolades at the DNC convention (did you hear the Clinton speech?) for going full economic retard any hope of economic sanity in this election.
There was no accountability thrown on the DNC from economists for those brain-dead statements, and after the polls in rust belt states went to Obama it was clear Romney needed to go populist.

Oh come on. You’re not that naieve.
I agree with your original comment.
Romney can’t not label them a currency manipulator on Day 1.
The Chinese know that.
An agreement and a ‘blossoming of the close Sino-US relationship’ will be heralded mid/late in 2013.
The Chinese prefer Romney over Obama the same way they preferred Howard over Kruddy and for the same readon – stability and predictability.
There’ll be a new leadership in China at the same time as the new leadership in Washington.
Sinc is buying the trade war leftist fear-mongering.

Detroit went broke because the UAW raped the industry, not because China builds cars.

Scott Walker’s campaign in Wisconsin was built around bringing down an out of control union machine in local government. There was a similar victory against out of control unions in Indiana. The Ohio governor made the mistake of taking on the police & fire unions when he tried.
The Republicans governmors are working to address these issues.

Chrysler didn’t sell Jeep to Fiat. Jeep is a division of Chrysler still, and Fiat owns the lot.

Chrysler says they are expanding production in China, not moving jobs out of the US. In fact, they’re also adding jobs in Ohio factories.

“Chrysler says they are expanding production in China, not moving jobs out of the US.”
Spin it how you like, Chrysler are still choosing to employ Chinese workers over American ones, otherwise all the production increases would be in the US wouldn’t they Jarrah?
Don’t subscribe to the whole “manufacturing overseas is bad” line myself, but it puts Obama in a position where he can claim he saved the auto industry by continuing GWB’s plan OR attack Romney for outsourcing jobs overseas.
Unless of course he starts attacking Chrysler as well…

Are the lies and naked protectionism worthy of some condemnation as well?
Or are do people only hold the Romney campaign to impossible standards?

It makes sense to build cars in China, the Chinese people will have the money to buy cars, the poor Americans will be paying off their 16 trillion debt till 3200.
And it will free up resources in America to produce other things, as soon as the Obama administration builds whatever the car companies ‘don’t build’.
