I was listening to the radio on Thursday morning, the day of the first exam for the Year 12 VCE students.
We had the Victorian Minister for Education, I think his name is Martin Dixon, telling the students not to worry too much; that VCE results are not everything; and that there are plenty of options for students don’t do very well.
We tend to get the same sorts of comments when the results are released.
I find all this very strange. What ever happened to the pursuit of excellence? Can you imagine the Chinese Minister for Education saying these sorts of things? Can you imagine what Chinese parents and students would make of these attitudes?
And what about Australia’s aspiration to be among the top 5 performing school systems in the world by 2020? Will we get there by giving the message to the students that results don’t matter?
Go figure, I say.
