Grand academic fraud – and other dodgy schemes

This is straight out fraud which fortunately has not contaminated the co-workers of the guilty party, according to parallel investigations by three Continental universities.

Equally significant as the primary fraud (shit happens), the reports express grave concern about the intellectual standards and the leadership in the research community where the fraud took so long to be revealed.

Three young researchers blew the whistle on Stapel in August, bringing their concerns to the head of the department. In addition, three other young researchers “had previously raised the alarm.” Two professors had suspicions but apparently didn’t come forward. From the report: “The committee concludes that the six young whistle-blowers showed more courage, vigilance, and inquisitiveness than incumbent full professors. ”

On the home front Jo Nova found that some proportion of nearly a $Billion of climate-related education and PR work was commissioned which appeared to be designed to promote a political agenda. Not academic fraud but worthy of mention. Not that a Bil is very much money these days by the standards of the current administration.

While cancer patients will have to pay more or wait longer for treatment, the Department To Fix The Weather handed out nearly 1 billion dollars in 2010-2011, some* of which was used to “educate” people about energy efficiency and the benefits of government policies.

*UPDATE: While there are a lot of “education” grants in 2012, there are some research grants going to the CSIRO (eg in 2012 at least $13m of the $40m that year was for research at CSIRO). In 2010 (the big dollar grant year) many more of the grants were for “strategies”, for IPCC matters, for universities and the CSIRO — though none of the grants I’ve seen on a random sample add up to anything like the total outgoing.)

Is this advertising by any other name? Instead of running an ALP campaign advert, they award money to groups which promote their policies and get disguised third party ads by NGOs who collect donations and are seemingly the voice of the community (what percentage of these non-profits comes voluntarily from the community and what percentage comes via forced payment from tax?).

“Do Something” picked up $800,000 to become a type of GONGO and run a website that will apparently duplicate many of the messages taxpayers are already paying for on government sites. Other grants go for “efficient” lighting, which obviously isn’t economically efficient, or it wouldn’t need a government grant. Why are taxpayers in Roma, say, paying for hot water systems for councils in Glen Eira? Don’t the residents of Glen Eira pay for that in their rates? These layers of cross payments between different levels of governments and to allow seemingly “independent” groups to become disguised wings of government are a burden on Western Civilization. Every step that makes the payee more distant from the outcome makes it less likely money will be used wisely.

    Winston Churchill once said:

“We contend that for a nation to tax itself into prosperity, is like a man standing in a bucket and trying to lift himself up by the handle.”

Remember the Golden Rule – he who has the gold makes the rules. Pity our trolls here are too brain dead to understand this.

You know, I’m unsurprised a labor MP said “shut the fuck up” in parliament, Bennie. It just shows up the rabble for who they are.

People employed in the public sector and the unions have made a major investment error in allowing their retirement funds to be managed by people who earn their income from these funds.

How can you trust people who are earning their salaries off your money to give you the best return?

When you have union and public sector superannuation money being invested into entities like inactive desalination plants backed by failed governments, and the utterly slow rollout of the NBN, with projected returns that are meant to match the (now falling) CPI, how can you expect to perform over the CPI?

Taxpayers and companies are rebelling at topping up DBFs. This was why Peter Costello set up the future fund with the sale of some national assets, and the present government doesn’t get it that any raid is a raid on our children’s future.

Speaking here as a mother, and as a manager of a family SMSF earning 8-10% at last check.

Look, at this stage with AGW science repudiated, in tatters, capable of sustaining any number of legal suits for misrepresentation, and with considerable doubt on whether human emissions of CO2 are even responsible for the increase in atmospheric CO2 concentration, it can be concluded that ANY money spent on anything related to AGW is inherently fraudulent.

First comment by ‘Robbo’ is worth highlighting…

Another interesting grant in that list:
    http://www.climatechange.gov.au/about/grants/2011-56.aspx
$271,560 to the Australian Youth Climate Coalition, for “Power Shift events for youth in Perth and Brisbane to raise awareness on climate change”.

Worth reminding that the Australian Youth Climate Coalition is the green-leftist lobby group founded by Anna Rose, that young and naive chick you may remember debating with Nick Minchin last year, interviewing Jo and writing an ABC-sponsored book. Their group’s policy objectives are a) doing climate propaganda for other impressionable kids, and b) lobbying the government to move to a 100% renewable energy. So, once again, the Labor government is funding “independent” lobby groups who then lobby the government to do what they wanted to do in the first place, only that way it looks like it comes from the “community”, the “people”.

    Madness.

Anna Rose is married to Simon Sheikh of GetUp notoriety.

Government has become (always was) all about the hangers-on.

It’s just that todays lefties have found the best way to exploit it with the added advantage of increasing their chances to control it.

Certain governments provide the funding to idealogocially aligned NGOs and other organisations, they fund the academics, the academics provide the ‘evidence’ or scare story, the media chase the story, the media chasing the story encourages support for the government’s re-election [policies] and continuance of the funding.

And each also seems to have the goal of increasing their group’s influence of the general population.

Do take a look at Do Something. There’s a lie right on the front page (top right hand corner): “Do Something, a not-for-profit organisation relies on your support”.

On its site: “Do Something was established by Planet Ark founders Jon Dee and Pat Cash in association with Tina Jackson, former Executive Director of the National Trust of Australia.”

Then there’s Do Something Near You, “an initiative of Do Something”, whhic is sponsored by Aldi.

Why is the government handing out $800,000 to this organisation? It seems you can paste “not-for-profit” in front of anything these days and obtain money.

Someone really needs to look into the NGO sector.

I am opening a not for profit group called ” bullshitting tertiary educated tossers to the new Gulags” .Where do I apply to the useless alp/groin / dependent guvmint for a HUGE GRANT ?

    How can you say his?

Only this evening, Australia’s national broadcaster and trusted source of knowledge about the world told me that a bunch of UN people were very concerned about people’s apathy towards global warming and they were really really hoping that their latest big scary report would shock people into action.

The story was by that lovely Sarah Clarke. She’s a greenie, so she knows her stuff. Her reports have even won green awards, so they must be true.

  13. MT Isa Miner

bennie, mate, I’ve lost the link to the Gillard greatest hits compilation you put up earlier in the month.
Been searching the threads til my RSI played up 😉
Mind putting it up again, I want to share it with some mates?

    On the subject of AGW:
Arctic permafrost is melting faster than predicted

The early findings also suggest that more methane – a greenhouse gas that is about 25 times more powerful than carbon dioxide over 100 years – is being released than models have predicted.

  15. wreckage

SteveC, given that the world’s GHG emissions are going up and will continue to do so for at least the next 20 years, what exactly are you going to do to save yourself?

Pfft…look at the bloke who fronts that ridiculous “Investors Group on Climate Change”…he is a former Wong staffer.

  17. cohenite

johno, I appreciate the irony but with fuckwits like steveC trolling AGW has to be treated as it is; the mindfuck and wetdream of the dross of humanity.

For instance steve has just linked to the formerly great New Scientist which has been reduced to a shell of its former self by the green white-anting which has taken place over the last decade or so.

2012 was the largest Arctic sea-ice melt in the satellite era which began in 1979; melts in the 1930’s and certainly in the Holocene were as extensive and most likely much greater.

Coincidentally both sea-ice and the land ice-sheets in the Antarctic are increasing.

Methane crops up periodically as the bogey man in the AGW lexicon. Methane levels after dropping for many years trended upwards in 2007-2008 [see Dlugokencky et al]

New Scientist was amongst the many alarmist outlets which jumped on this like the vultures they are to claim AGW was going to kill us all through the wicked agency of methane.

However, as always, the reason was natural with the increase in methane being due to natural oscillations of radical hydroxyl (OH) which acts to break down atmospheric methane.

A slight downturn of the levels of OH due to heavier than normal tropical rainfall in those years had a flow-on effect on methane levels.

Compounding this was the hysteria attached to the alleged melting of the tundra and warming of Arctic sea-beds; however this research team found the sea-bed outlets had been active for centuries.

As always AGW hysteria is reduced to the gibberish it is when a bit of logic and real evidence is applied to it.

  18. SteveC

Silly me, imagine quoting New Scientist! NASA would never say anything likE that.

  19. cohenite

Yeah, NASA; the Doha, Qatar annual IPCC junket needs a key focus to scare the punters and it looks as though it is methane and the tundra melting this year.

As I mentioned the scare actually began in 2008 with the increase in methane concentration trend during that time. The tundra and Arctic sea-bed contribution to that was shown to be natural as the link I provided shows.

NASA climate research is ideologically directed by Hansen; that is it is tainted, and just like the CSIRO and BOM have adopted the AGW scare; it is a tragedy that these once great organisations have lost their scientific way under the yoke of AGW alarmists.

You wouldn’t care though would you steve because as we know you don’t give a fuck about society.

  20. DontTreadOnMe

Yes, NASA, whose new charge is to make muslims feel good about themselves, and all the “contributions” they have made to the advancement of science, not.

you get what you pay for. few academic writes books anymore.

they write up each chapter as a journal article, get it published in differnet forms in two journals, and then collate and re-edit these articles into a book

that why I always want an online book preview. I do not want to buy a set of jouranl articles reloaded.
