Warmies and the ABC in the gutter again, exposed by Jo Nova

An ABC team visited Jo Nova’s place to film some discussion for the “I can change your mind” climate documentary. Jo arranged for an additional camera to record the whole thing so that any dirty pool could be exposed.

Sure enough.

When the Smith and Nasht came to our house (on behalf of the ABC) to take footage for the “I can change your mind” documentary, David and I asked fellow skeptic and camera-man Barry Corke if he could film them filming us, so we have our own copy of what happened.

In the final version that went to air, not only did three of the four key sets of evidence that fuel our skepticism vanish, the editors split and diced sentences to make it appear that David said a sentence he never actually said. He doesn’t think the poorly sited thermometers show the “models were wrong” (we have much better evidence than that); that’s illogical and absurd. Everything I said of any substance was edited out (which I’m kinda proud of). They came all that way to watch me try to convince Anna Rose, then left me with 18 bland words. Perhaps what I discussed (and Anna’s weak replies) was too dangerous, not easy to mock, and they couldn’t ambush Nick Minchin with any experts that could debunk what I said?

Obviously Smith &Nasht were on a fishing trip here (funded by you and me). They were fishing for ways to discredit skeptics. In the end they had to resort to deleting 75% of the evidence, and 100% of my points. Blind commentators later claimed that the bloggers had no credibility.

Well what good does that do telling her fans about it now. She should have told them what she was doing so they wouldn’t misbehave. Now she’s just going to look like a crazy to the majority of viewers who don’t read the same blogs we do.

  2. hammygar

Typical sour screem of the “we was robbed” brigade. Wah, wah! I want my mummy.

  3. shauno

Sleetmute what would have been the point of that? The point was to show what the ABC does routinely. Also the ABC edited the footage after the shots obviously so they could have edited it more fairly knowing that it was taped by Jo.

  4. Sleetmute

Just went to her site and it seems the ABC noticed the cameras, but perhaps she didn’t make clear that they had them to police what the ABC were doing. Nova has all sorts of excuses about why the footage didn’t go up earlier. But the net result is that she’s been played.

  5. Ellen of Tasmania

Wouldn’t it be great if our resident trolls have the good-will to actually view Jo’s footage before they draw conclusions or make comments?

  6. Dan

I think the point is that Nova recorded the entire event and the ABC still doctored the interview. Such blatant unethical behaviour. Those involved should lose their jobs.

  7. val majkus

while you’re at it don’t miss Minchin and Rose with Marc Morano http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yGYW7IEIirk
    (it’s short)

  8. Alfonso

Privatise it, take the “Their” out of “Their ABC”.

But don’t worry campers….CEO Scotty and Media Watch’s Jonno will be all over this for sure…..as will Newman, in retrospect.

  9. Frank Brus

I recall that they actually told the ABC they were going to do their own recording. Obviously in the ABC’s arrogance, they know they can get away with anything.

  10. the sting

The ABC has form on this going back many years when they redubbed the questions on a Four Corners program about Telstra as I recall. They also in the past used a female interviewer to ask the questions of a person but wwhen it went to air it was Kerry O’Brien appearing to ask the questions.Privatise the ABC,we have too many leftie journalists on welfare there and we as taxpayers can spend the money much more wisely, say on a new hospital being built every year.

  11. Leigh Lowe

I can see why you would hold that point of view Hammy.
I am guessing you are one of life’s poorly educated losers who, like the ABC, is a net consumer of Government funds, rather than a net taxpayer.
As a result you are happy to see Government funds used to advance the careers and petty causes of the indolent and ill-informed because, if that wasn’t so, I am guessing you would be living in a caravan.
Oh ….. and why do I conclude you are poorly educated loser?
Well, the spelling of “scream” as “screem” was something of a giveaway, Hammy.

  12. H B Bear

I’m not sure why Minchin did this program – it was always going to be a stitch up, although you would have expected a bit more subtlety than this. Mrs Warmy Get Up and the ALPBC, there isn’t much difference any more.

  13. Steve of Glasshouse

    Hammy penned

“Typical sour screem of the “we was robbed” brigade. Wah, wah! I want my mummy.”

So, I guess from now on, we can edit, slice and dice your commentary . So very 1984..

  14. jasbo

Sadly this is independent of the CAGW debate. People in the media game are inured to it, but talk to anyone outside who has engaged with a story and their response will be ‘They didn’t outright lie, but…” Skewing the story to meet ideology or just news values is standard.

Of course, it’s worse for CAGW.

It does raise a question about the legality of secret recording, which should be standard for every interview with the untrustworthy sods. If Today Tonight can get away with it for tradies, why can’t ordinary people dealing with something as important as the Fourth Estate? James O’Keefe proved how powerful a tool it can be in dealing with bureaucracy – why not with media? The power they wield through the capacity to edit and rewrite is enormous.

  15. Angry God

Like to see how the complaints department dismisses this one. They are breathtaking in their desire to support one side of a discussion but even this should be one edit to far.

  16. dover_beach

db: Hammygar is a capitalist pig.

Hammygar: Wah, wah! I want my mummy.

    This is easy.

  17. Cold-Hands

Well what good does that do telling her fans about it now. She should have told them what she was doing so they wouldn’t misbehave. Now she’s just going to look like a crazy to the majority of viewers who don’t read the same blogs we do.

As a voluntarily-run largely two person site financed by donations, there is little wonder that it has taken so long to get these vids up, given that working on them must have been done only after the daily posts were attended to (once they got hold of them from their friend).

If you watched the “I Can Change Your Mind” program, it showed that the JoNova team was independently taping their interview, and they were portrayed as paranoid that they would be edited unfairly. It is a measure of the ABC’s arrogance that despite the presence of an independent camera and their obvious concern about unfair editing, they still went ahead and unethically doctored the “interview”.

  18. ella

Typical sour screem of the “we was robbed” brigade.

It is time someone told Hammy that his imagery needs some work.

Of course, scientists often use metaphor in their quest to understand the world – Gaia, the selfish gene, the amygdala hijack, the brain likened to a computer, the heart to a pump, black holes, and the Big Bang for starters.

As one bloke said, Hammy, Metaphor is one of our most useful tools for trying to understand partially what cannot be comprehended totally.

Hammy needs to consider that this use of imagery may suggest that the science is not settled.

  19. Tom

I think the point is that Nova recorded the entire event and the ABC still doctored the interview. Such blatant unethical behaviour. Those involved should lose their jobs.

    Well said, Dan.

Typical sour screem of the “we was robbed” brigade.

Just in case you needed reminding, there are no ethics in the Hamster’s submarine Soviet bunker in the Indian Ocean as the brain-damaged old commie nutcase awaits the reincarnation of Joe Stalin and the Mass Murder Choir.

  20. Biota

If you watch the video there is a long discussion at the beginning in which Jo and David make it quite clear that they are doing their own recording as evidence in the event of selective editing. They haven’t been played, the ABC has.

  21. boy on a bike

    A typical ABC edit:

We are sour. Wah, wah! I want my mummy.

    That sounds better.

  22. Dan

Those at the ABC have deliberately abused their position as broadcasters presenting a “balanced” documentary to the population. The difference between what was aired and what actually happened is stark. There is no way the ABC can let this one pass after an internal review.

It is not arrogance that caused them to doctor the interview, it is a deliberate attempt to influence the viewer with their own ideology. They have deliberately used their position to broadcast this misinformation regardless of the truth and for this they should be sacked and made to show the whole interview with Nova in its entirety as an apology.

  23. Steve of Glasshouse

    Boy on a bike wrote
    “A typical ABC edit:

We are sour. Wah, wah! I want my mummy.

    That sounds better.”

Wah, wah. My mummy’s milk is sour..
I think that is even better, given Hammy’s outlook on life..

  24. Jim Rose

why agree to an interview that will be edited to an agenda?

The most marginal members of a media audience is women. Slightly more women and men vote to the centre-left but will change channels or do something else fastest. This rewards the ABC for bias to the centre left in editing interviews.

  25. dover_beach

There are two things to be gleamed from this: firstly, only agree to an interview if it is going to be live (if at all) on a topic which you know you will be putting forward a position contrary to that of the ABC. Secondly, destroy the ABC.

  26. Steve of Glasshouse

We should demand that the ABC provides unfettered access to ALL of it’s unedited video etc . Broad stroke proposal for discussion

  27. entropy

This is how pall media do a story. The producer has already written the story; the only purpose of the interviews is to provides some vision and soundbites for the already written story. The footage is edited so it fits the story. I call the process the Liz Jackson school of journalism after watching this same process with my then CEO back in the nineties when Ms Jackson did the interview. A three hour interview compressed to 30 seconds to make him look bad.

What, do people seriously think they go out and do a lot of interviews to find out the facts and then write the story afterwards? How naive.

I’m not sure why Minchin did this program – it was always going to be a stitch up, although you would have expected a bit more subtlety than this. Mrs Warmy Get Up and the ALPBC, there isn’t much difference any more.

Like many conservatives, at heart people like Minchin kowtow to the idea of the institution of the ABC, and can’t accept that it is infiltrated and its charter thoroughly debased by those opposed to their worldview.

Conservatives that regularly appear on ABC shows are a bit like Charlie Brown trying to kick the football being held by Lucy. They always believe one day she will play fair and won’t whip the ball away just when they go for the big kick.

  28. WhaleHunt Fun

Sell the ABC and force all the staff to sign on for organ donation. That way they will have made one positive contribution to society, as walking lying spare parts incubators.

  29. WhaleHunt Fun

Each AGW skeptic should be entitled to two ABC livers and four ABC kidneys. That way skeptics can become the new Chardonney sipping class without concern as they have spare parts on call when and as needed.

  30. blogstrop

This is in fact old news, and the set of videos that David Evans & Jo Nova made, to which I linked here and elsewhere several times, were a response to that ABC extreme edit.

  31. Bruce

That way they will have made one positive contribution to society

WHF – You must be thinking of this. Unfortunately the ABC is staffed by vampires, not cannibals, so it wouldn’t work.

  32. Toiling Mass

Can’t we put them all in a pit and toss in a single parcel of funding? Watching the pampered fops turn on one another would be great.

Eventually vestiges of race memory that allowed the species to survive and prosper in a hostile world would assert themselves in the ABC brains, propelling flaccid limbs and atrophied sinews, providing such a display girly-kicking, limp hand slaps, and cringing running-aways as would make HG Wells’ Eloi look like Trojan warriors.

    I’d pay $0.08 a day for that.

  33. H B Bear

entropy @ 10.51am Agreed – the ALPBC can no longer be treated as a battle of ideas, you may be inclined to let run in academia where it is of little consequence. As Maurice Newman is now discovering and John Howard attempted, the organisation has demonstrated that is incapable of incremental reform. The latest defence by Mark Scott refused to even acknowledge there is any problem.

Accordingly it should be actively targeted for break-up and starved of resources. The idea that the whole of the ALPBC is a “market failure” broadcaster is absurd. A government owned broadcaster in the modern media landscape makes as much sense as a State candlestick maker.

  34. These bastards should be taken to court for misrepresentation, their lives turned inside out for several months, and see how THEY bloody feel.

  35. johno

No one from the Right/conservative/libertarian side of politics should ever, ever, do anything to help their ABC. They are the enemy. Just privatise it (and SBS)and treat them like any other media organisation.

There is no place it a liberal democratic society for State owned media. Leave that to the communists.

  36. Myrddin Seren

We eagerly await the return of Jonathan Holmes and Media Watch, when they return from their three months annual holidays, to fearlessly and impartially investigate this blatant media spin.

    Zzzzzzzzzzzz

  37. hammygar

Oh ….. and why do I conclude you are poorly educated loser?
Well, the spelling of “scream” as “screem” was something of a giveaway, Hammy.

All you so-called edercated people are so much better at typing than I am. Whoopee! I should have spent much longer at Uni and come out with much better edercated fingers, I guess.

  38. blogstrop

Hammy the hater, are you going to let the Composta mask slip again and show us more of the real you? What we saw last time was pretty bad. Don’t know why you bother, really. You’ve nothing to say.

  39. Honesty

Sell the ABC to help fund NDIS. A win-win. I mean if you are interested in left wing press releases you can still go to the ALP web site or Fairfax it’s not as if Hammy or his ilk want informed debate.

  40. Steve of Glasshouse

Hammy wrote “All you so-called edercated people are so much better at typing than I am. Whoopee! I should have spent much longer at Uni and come out with much better edercated fingers, I guess.”

    We’re discussing grammar, not Onanism..

  41. John Mc

Anyone going into an interview with the ABC – or any leftwing media- should produce and make available their own recording.

  42. Tom

Anyone going into an interview with the ABC – or any leftwing media- should produce and make available their own recording.

That’s exactly what everyone should do if they’re being interviewed. The only journos who’ll squeal will be professional trash, like the political activists working for ABC News and Public Affairs.

  43. jupes

Notice that the only troll here is Hammy?

That is because there is no way to spin this.

If AGW was correct, why do the ABC and other greenies have to use deceit to sell the message?

  44. Greg James

Actually, a short 15-20 minute documentary, comparing and contrasting the two videos, would be a very instructive exercise.

If nothing else, it would at least expose the ABC for the partisan hackery it engages in.

Frankly, though, I don’t think it would change anything. It would only demonstrate what we all know.

The only thing is to get rid of the entire stinking Leftoid cesspit.

  45. MattR

The only thing is to get rid of the entire stinking Leftoid cesspit.

Yep, the fact that taxpayers are forced to pay for a broadcaster that caters for a minority of leftists is a massive scandal. Especially in this day and age where it’s almost impossible to avoid media everywhere.

They have had the chance to fix themselves, it will never happen. When it comes to taxpayer funded bureaucracies and institutions, leftists are like moths to lights.

The rest of us actually want to do something productive with our lives. Time to privatise it.

  46. Poor Old Rafe

Nice point Jupes, would our other leftwing friends like to step up and give us a comment on this episode to demonstrate that they can be more fair than the hamster.

  47. hammygar

Yep, the fact that taxpayers are forced to pay for a broadcaster that caters for a minority of leftists is a massive scandal.

What the commenters on this blog fail to recognise or acknowledge is that it’s the Right that is a very small minority in Australian society. Most people these days have a communitarian viewpoint, and in fact emhatically agree with the viewpoints expressed on the ABC and in the Sydney Morning Herald. Why do you think Tony Abbott is almost universally detested and that most people would welcome Malcolm Turnbull back as the leader of the opposition?

  48. blogstrop

Speak of the devil, Rafe, and he is sure to appear …

  49. blogstrop

it’s the Right that is a very small minority

See the two-party preferred polls. Very consistently trashing that statement. You’re a joke, Hammy, and a bad one.

  50. hammygar

Of course all yo denialists keep receiving bad news, don’t you?

  51. blogstrop

Maybe Hammy should be recalled to any remaining institution for the terminally deranged.

  52. Toiling Mass

My understanding was that the reason for Hammy’s existence was so that, in dire situations one person needs to be sacrificed, the situation is not made worse by having to agonise over whom.

  53. kae

    Hammy’s a troll.
Don’t give him oxygen and he’ll fall off his soapbox pretty damn quick.

  54. Trish B

Great work David Jo and Barry. Keep up your good work in getting the truth exposed…

  55. Marky

See the two-party preferred polls. Very consistently trashing that statement. You’re a joke, Hammy, and a bad one.

Not just the 2PP, but first-preference polls, too. It’s a bit of a leap to say that all Coalition voters are Right and all Labor voters are Left, but if we were to assume that, then there are around 10% more Right-leaning Australians than Left. I don’t think it’s outrageous to suggest that there are more Right-leaning Labor voters than there are Left-leaning Coalition voters, either.

As for the ABC’s latest, quelle surprise.
