Ellen DeGeneres – we’re paying for her to visit Australia

I’m annoyed to read that the NSW taxpayer will be paying for Ellen DeGeneres to visit Australia as some tourism promotion. This is after Treasurer Mike Baird announced a cut to a ‘multi-million dollar slush fund used to assist financing special events in NSW’. Baird

accused the former Labor government of using it [the Treasurer's Advance] as a “slush fund” he said the money will no longer be used to fund visits by the likes of Oprah Winfrey, but rather it will be available for emergencies, disaster relief and capital works. He said it cost taxpayers $2 million to fund a visit by Winfrey — who filmed a show in Sydney last December – and an extra $250,000 was needed to secure David Beckham’s visit with the LA Galaxy to play the Newcastle Jets.

So here we are in bushfire season, and the NSW Liberal Government is going to waste our money on bringing DeGeneres and her entourage to Sydney.

I have nothing against DeGeneres, I’m ambivalent about her, but if she wants to visit Australia with her Australian girlfriend Portia de Rossi she can pay her own costs. And isn’t it a bit strange that DeGeneres has been going out with the Aussie Rossi since 2004 and hasn’t visited Australia before?

Shame Baird, Shame.

Not going out with, they’re married.

I’m sure the pair of them aren’t short of a quid to pay their own way.

  2. Adrian

i don’t anything about her, other than she is just another person to add to the already very long list of freeloaders in this country.

  3. Mk50 of Brisbane

I had to google this no-talent gent to find out who he was. He’s an ugly old bugger, that’s for sure.

Looks like he’ll get along fine with that Wong chap.

  4. Ellen is part of the Intellectual and Moral Elite who comprise the Ruling Class.
We are funding her holiday with her special friend because shutup, Winston explained.

  5. Gab

DeGeneres is very poor and needs the taxpayers to help her visit Austraya.

  6. Alfonso

Financing niche lesbian rent seekers is just the Libs demonstrating they are equal opportunity gravy spreaders.

  7. Mundi

This will back fire. Heck arrivals FELL for the year after Winfrey came, our dollar is now even stroger, the us economy even weaker.

My family meet ups used to always involve them coming over here, now it’s the complete opposite. Your money goes way further in the USA.

  8. Keith

NSW Acting Premier Andrew Stoner – who did his best “Ellen dance”

Words fail. Can’t have Emmo having the dancing limelight all to himself.

  9. Ant

What’s truly sickening is that EDG would be multi-millionaire. Yet she’s got her willing hand out for the dime paid for by taxpayers who struggle with a tiny fraction of her income.

On the other hand, that’s standard operating procedure for a Leftist.

  10. C.L.

Australia is a childish, stupid country nowadays.

And it’s getting more childish and more stupid each year.

  11. .

Ellen’s not that bad. I wish she wasn’t such a kleptomaniac.

She should really fund this herself.

  12. Infidel Tiger

Are talkative lezzos who dance badly a rare commodity in NSW?

  13. Rabz

So ellen degenerate is visiting Oz, as taxpayers’ expense of course.

    Well, that’s made my week…

  14. Infidel Tiger

    She’s only worth $90 million.

    http://www.therichest.org/celebnetworth/celeb/journalist/ellen-degeneres-net-worth/

In Australia that gets you about 3 rounds of frothies.

  15. .

If we’re going to get anything out of this, can’t we deport Clover Moore?

    Fucking bikeways.

  16. Gab

    She’s only worth $90 million.

They should increase her taxes then.

  17. Gab

Heck arrivals FELL for the year after Winfrey came, our dollar is now even stroger, the us economy even weaker.

Maybe they should have a Mardi Gras to celebrate EDG visit.

  18. dianeh

I would agree with paying for Ellen to visit, IF there was a corresponding cut to NSW Tourism for overseas advertising. Surely that is the reason that the NSW govt is paying for her, ie that the reach of Ellen’s show is a far greater than the corresponding amount spent on direct advertsiing.

But is this being paid for from NSW Tourism’s advertising budget, or in addition to it?

  19. candy

Australians always seem to go ape over visiting American movie stars.

  20. Grey

Surely NSW Tourism has a promotions budget.

If this is what they think is the cost effective way of spending it, what is the big deal? If it there as a better way of spending this money to promote tourism, then we should do that instead.

How about a bit of product placement. Why not have the next Bond movie set in Kakadu?

  21. Alex

I think it’s a small price to pay. Swisse and Qantas seem to be co-sponsoring the trip, so just say NSW is paying $1,000,000. If you look at the enormous reach of the Ellen show around the world, as well as its syndication, you can only conclude that it is good value for tourism and for Brand Australia more generally. You’d have to pay tens of millions of dollars to launch an advertising campaign that would have a similar impact. In short, one or two million is nothing.

The only question is who should be paying it. I’m not sure if it should be funded by NSW, Vic or federally by Tourism Australia.

  22. H B Bear

Ellen DeGeneres is my fourth favourite lesbian.

No doubt Their ALPBC, that K D Wong chap and Ol’ Crazy Eyes will turn it into a huge dykefest highlighting the overwhelming public support for gay marriage.

Any American who still has a job can’t afford to come here anyway.

  23. Warwick Hughes

Sorry to comment off topic -
I suppose there is a case for buying publicity for Australia but I know little about either of the TV shows mentioned. However I just wanted to point out that for similar money to the Oprah visit we could hire two or three fixed wing multi-engined air tankers/water bombers to aid us during the ~10 weeks of our fire season.
I read where insurance claims so far just in Tasmania total $42million – so it is possible that the total cost for this summer might be $100mill, unless we are lucky from here on.
It really puzzles me that we do not engage with this technology every fire season as an additional form of insurance.
Question about large fixed wing air tankers, water bombers in Australia now – Dunalley fire timeline

  24. Alfonso

“It really puzzles me that we do not engage with this technology every fire season as an additional form of insurance.’

It’s the tyranny of a small economy and distance War, the US can knock up water bombers from a thousand old serviceable and super cheap airframes…DC4-6s, even C130s…nice fit, they do minimal hours, extra work in Canada.
The airworthiness requirements here would be like a bottomless 3 year gold pit to an obstructive CAA bureaucrat demonstrating his worth. Combine that with 2 months utilisation a year and the idea is an ex parrot without massive taxpayer subsidies.

  25. Ian

    Ingrate:

“Okay, I just google-mapped my trip to Australia. You’ve gotta be kidding me.”

  26. Andrew

I bet some idiot in the Australian press will ask Ellen about same sex marriage in Australia.

  27. Andrew

I am sure that the twats at Getup! would have paid Ellen for her trip to Australia in exchange for doing another lame same sex marriage ad.

  28. John Mc

I actually supported Fatty O’Barrell and thought things would get better in my former home state. In my defence, it was at that period of extreme Labor dominance and incompetence, but I’m not really sure if Fatty’s government is any better.

  29. Louis Hissink

Jeez, I must be one of the elite – I had never even heard of her. (Being Elite means not watching bogan tv etc).

What a sheltered life I must lead.

Thank you Mk50, I’m a step closer, indeed a step close enough, to knowing who this dried up looking prune is. I still don’t really know and I’m pleased about that.

  31. Alice

Since when did the state of NSW who apparently cant afford to fix our roads anymore and wants local councils to do all of that…
Think that it is now “The State of NSW Entertainment Promotions service?”

Listen guys – can we just leave that Bullshit to the private sector? Is Mick Edgely ?? still in the game?

I do not see why I have to pay for various “No Idea” personalities who earn more than enough to promote themselves to pop intoi Sydeny for a visit.
We have plenty of decent “no idea” personalities here we can use and who might welcome a bit of self promotion.

This BS is not the buiness of government although these days it is getting harder to work out exactly what is the business of government.
    Waste of money.

  32. Alice

Can anyone tell me how many Elvis firefighting machines there are??

We could do with a few more if the governments want to make themselve useful and set this “star” home.

  33. Mk50 of Brisbane

We normally fly in in two Skycranes for the season, as two fit nicely into an Antonov..

I am coming to the conclusion that, for the last 30years “universities have had a compulsory subject for ALL students called “Stupidity 101″.It has Infected All politicians and union thugs ,even the LNP has it.
Slution,no person with a uni degree is allowed within 500metres of parliament houses ,or union offices ,on pain of 30years “Re Education”in a Strict Regime Gulag in the Simpson Desert!

  35. nilk

Ellen generally does nothing for me, but the show is sometimes on in the lunchroom at work. One time I caught this skit with Sofia Vergara.

Watch it through, then imagine that it’s a man standing behind Sofia. That just riled me up no end, and months down the track it still shi’ites me.

  36. john malpas

Ellen was front page with her bride in the Herald – so Murdoch must like her.

  37. Cold-Hands

Well, as put in this clip, ‘Why be a tax payer when you can be a tax taker?’.

Look, if we aren’t willing to take a risk promoting up-and-coming new talent, how are they ever going to be “discovered” and make it big. I am sure this DeGeneres person, whoever she is, appreciates this hand-up… not a hand-out.

If Alice and I can totally agree on something, perhaps there is hope for a lasting peace in the Middle East after all.

  41. Warwick Hughes

Alice was asking about – “…how many Elvis firefighting machines there are??”
Here is a list of the aerial fire fighting fleet and where they are based – all small. IMHO we need a few air tankers on this scale or larger.

  42. jupes

Alan Joyce reckons this will make money for his airline. Bazza reckons this will make money for his state.

    Makes sense to me.

    what?

that floozie airheads who watch US daytime TV will wing it over the Pacific to gaze at de Opera House?

  44. jupes

    what?

that floozie airheads who watch US daytime TV will wing it over the Pacific to gaze at de Opera House?

Apparently. That’s what the CEO of Qantas reckons.

  45. mareeS

floozie airheads who watch US daytime TV still can’t tell the difference between Australia and Austria. We had the misfortune of meeting one last week. There’s no hope for fat, dyed-blonde american women with no geo-compass apart from the floor-plan of Bloomingdales.

  46. dd

This is what happens when you outsource your marketing to bureaucrats. Tactically they’re targeting the wrong market.
An American put it to me rather simplistically once: progressives dream of a vacatiom in France, while conservatives dream of a vacation in Australia.

Sure, Sydney is happening cosmopolitan place but Americans can get that kind of vibe in at least a dozen metropolises back home. I’d say this exercise was justified with the usual arguments about “look how much money the mardi gras brings in to Sydney”.

  47. dd

also De Generis is not in the same ballpark as Oprah, she’s not nearly as big.

This is not the same as getting Oprah to Australia.

  48. Alice

Oprah didnt have much effect so why are we exactly importing yanks to sell Australia as a tourist destination? Mixed messages and it isnt the governments job to go spruiking for the touismj industry.
Its none of their damn business.

They can fic the fucking roads in my opinion.
This bullshit waste of money spruiking for private operators at tax payers expense?
Spare me. The world has gone mad.

  49. pablo

This is in the same ballpark as every country town council being in the pocket of ratepayers to fund a ‘Tourist Information Centre’ so that ‘visitations’ can be measured and relayed back to the tourism bureacracy – the people who think up the De Generis freebie. A bit of privatising the benefits and socialising the costs methinks.

  50. Alice

Im going to bed. Im disgusted at this spin / media crap – I dont even know who this woman is or her gal pal Portia and nor do I care – and I was disgusted with state labor for this sort of media hype spin over Oprah so why is Barry even entertaining the thought (let alone stumping up money) As far as I am concerned Tourism Australia should all be sacked and let the Tourist operators fund their own bloody advertising. Everyone else has to.

Do all ploiticians get bribed with donations to spend our money like this????

and then turn around and tell local councils they cant do all the things they once did and councils have to slug ratepayers even higher fees to fix things the feds and state used to take care off?

  51. Alice

    Stuff Tourism Australia.

  52. Alice

    Will

This is how dumb we are…
    we are marketing to
“that floozie airheads who watch US daytime TV will wing it over the Pacific to gaze at de Opera House?

Not only that. Most of them are trapped on their counches without a job in a house that is under water and arent even shopping in bloomingdales now and are shopping in somewhere much worse.
So why are we marketing to the US anyway?

(and why am i paying for it)?

  53. Alice

    WTF is wrong with Dot??

    See comment at 5.55pm

  54. nilk

Ellen’s gal Portia used to be Amanda Rogers from Geelong.

    Wreckage

There is hope for lasting peace in the middle east because we have agreed on something at last.
I think I know why Dot has got pissed at 5.55. Its because someone criticsed the LNP over this visit of whoever she is and gal pal Portia

But Dot needs to realise that the LNP isnt a sainthood and I dont mind Barry (But what was the other choice??? – the State of Obnoxiouxobeids scumbag extended tribe of middle eastern, mafioso, whatever conmen and scared controlled bullied weak anglo saxon leeches in our prior state government?

but this is a stupid decision and its an LNP decision.

    Wake up Dot.

  57. Alice

What – you mean Portia isnt the real name?

  58. While we’re on the topic of firebombers, why doesn’t someone rejig the old WW2-era Short Sunderland design with modern turboprops, beef up the structure, and add water scoops and ten tons worth of tankage in that capacious hull? They could do ASR work in the cold months, or be retrofitted with weapon systems for sub hunting.

  59. .

    Wake up Dot.

    You’re a raging fuckhead, Alice.

I’m a member of the LDP.

  60. Stuff Tourism Australia. Try selling it. If the industry thinks it’s worth having, they’ll pay for it. If not, wind it up.

  61. Derp

Look I disapprove of taxpayers subsidising EDG’s trip as well, but the stupid comments disparaging her sexuality or calling her a bloke are a bit off and way counterproductive.

  62. alex

Article in another paper says: The trip is being funded by the NSW government, Qantas and Swisse Wellness. (Later two are main sponsors.)
… the Premier said the state’s contribution was “modest”.

So, all these comments show how some of you are ignorant.
Ellen show is seen on all continents, she has 16 million twitter followers (more than Oprah), her show has around 4 million viewers daily (only) in United States, her youtube channel is 17th most viewed of all times. She is not only popular, but she is also respected and trusted. So, tourism of Australia will only benefit from her visit.

  63. .

I know – I say she’s not so bad and I get called a member of the Liberal party.

  64. Tel

Apparently. That’s what the CEO of Qantas reckons.

Part of the deal is that she brings her own audience with her (which makes sense, because no one in Sydney cares enough). I’m sure Qantas will pick up their share of subsidy from this.

The objective is just to get glamour shots of Sydney and Melbourne onto US TV screens, which would cost a bit if you got an advertising company to do it.

If this is what they think is the cost effective way of spending it, what is the big deal? If it there as a better way of spending this money to promote tourism, then we should do that instead.

Well, not spending the money at all and lowering everyone’s tax would promote every industry, including tourism. Every second 20-something girl on Sydney streets is speaking German right now, so obviously tourists can figure out for themselves whether it is good value to come here.

  65. Alice

    LOL Dot

    “You’re a raging fuckhead, Alice.

I’m a member of the LDP.”

Dont tell mne you hang around with Terje?.
PS I feel better when you sign off with the words “youre a raging fuckhead”.
I worry you are not well when you dont.

  66. John Mc

What’s wrong with Terje? He’s the definition of a good bloke. You’ve also got to admire his dedication to the libertarian scene in Australia, small as it is.

  67. Alice

    Im with what Winston says
“Stuff Tourism Australia. Try selling it. If the industry thinks it’s worth having, they’ll pay for it. If not, wind it up.”

Sick to death of governments crying poor and having money for TV advertising on beahalf of private industry. Thats why they have industry bodies and private firms can band together and pay it themselves.
Trying picking up some of the debt of the younger gen who cant afford to spend because they have hecs debts, training fees, excessive car registration and insurance ie spend the money on their training and education rather than one industry segment who is clamouring for promotion (courtesy of government largesse).
Tourism is the last refuge of a country that doesnt have enough work going on. Waiting for tourists. Bah humbug.

  68. Alice

    John MC
Did I say anything bad about Terje (so far?) and yes dedication is the word.

He is the very essence of the modern missionary of LDP over at Quiggins (trying to educate the heathens and save their souls?)
