I’m annoyed to read that the NSW taxpayer will be paying for Ellen DeGeneres to visit Australia as some tourism promotion. This is after Treasurer Mike Baird announced a cut to a ‘multi-million dollar slush fund used to assist financing special events in NSW’. Baird
accused the former Labor government of using it [the Treasurer's Advance] as a “slush fund” he said the money will no longer be used to fund visits by the likes of Oprah Winfrey, but rather it will be available for emergencies, disaster relief and capital works. He said it cost taxpayers $2 million to fund a visit by Winfrey — who filmed a show in Sydney last December – and an extra $250,000 was needed to secure David Beckham’s visit with the LA Galaxy to play the Newcastle Jets.
So here we are in bushfire season, and the NSW Liberal Government is going to waste our money on bringing DeGeneres and her entourage to Sydney.
I have nothing against DeGeneres, I’m ambivalent about her, but if she wants to visit Australia with her Australian girlfriend Portia de Rossi she can pay her own costs. And isn’t it a bit strange that DeGeneres has been going out with the Aussie Rossi since 2004 and hasn’t visited Australia before?
Shame Baird, Shame.
