New Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus: do what I say not what I do

(Sorry about the duplication with Sinclair’s post – I didn’t notice until I posted)

Christopher Pyne

This government is starting to resemble a scene from Downfall. … This government appears to be unravelling on a daily basis. If this is what it’s like after three days of election campaign, what would another three years of a Labor government do?

Mark Dreyfus on Pyne’s comments above

These immature and offensive comments have no place in Australian political debate. There is no place in Australian political debate for a comparison of any Australian government with Hitler’s Third Reich. These comments are deeply hurtful to holocaust survivors, they are deeply hurtful to any right thinking Australian.

Hint: if you think that Pyne’s comments are apt, you’re not “right thinking”.

Mark Dreyfus in his SMH opinion piece on 11 March 2011 titled Shades of Goebbels in ‘truth campaign’:

Abbott’s wildest claim is that he is running a ”truth campaign”. Leaving aside  the Goebbellian cynicism of labelling a scare campaign a ”truth campaign”, I  think it shows Abbott’s contempt for the Australian electorate.

When asked about his own comments comparing Tony Abbott’s campaign to Goebbels, Dreyfus says

That’s a quite different thing, it’s a very, very specific and targeted comment about the propaganda techniques.

Do you think our new Attorney-General will treat everyone equally under the law?

Do I think our new Attorney-General will treat everyone equally under the law? What, and break from a well-worn path trod by all labor AGs? He will squirm and twist, skip and stomp like the rest. (heck, I almost said the ‘best’ !!)

  2. The Old and Unimproved Dave

With only seven months tops in the job, he’d probably do well not to give his Liberal successor too much motivation to repay him in kind in October.

  3. Louis Hissink

Puh, after reading Russia’s agony by Robert Wilton, a more apt comparison would be Russia post WWI during the Kerensky period. Just as shambolic as that government, though this time there aren’t any murderous Bolsheviki rampaging around the country side but maybe their equivalents in the bureaucracy penning our necks with discrimination legislation rather than lead.

  4. Rabz

Do you think our new Attorney-General will treat everyone equally under the law?

Do you think the Pope is Jewish?

Do you think the earth is flat?

Do you think catastrophic human induced climate change is real?

If you answered yes to any of the above, then hey, do I have deal for you!

  5. Grey

Since Downfall was simply based on Trevor-Roper’s convenient fiction, it suggests that Pyne thinks his chances of winning the next election revolve around making Julia Gillard a secret offer to stand down.

As the reemergence of Hitler/Gillard on the international scene, even in the event of a renewal of hostilities with the Soviets is completely unthinkable, the use of his/her elite troops in intelligence gathering or combat is not foreseen at present

Remember, you read it here on Catllaxy first.

    Pyne could respond :

That’s a quite different thing, it’s a very, very specific and targeted comment about the propaganda techniques how regimes fall apart.

  7. stackja

…treat everyone equally under the law? Yes those who are ‘right’.

  8. Crossie

A distinction without a difference, something only a QC would appreciate.

‘Hint: if you think that Pyne’s comments are apt, you’re not “right thinking”.’

    Doubleplusgood!

Well Adolph, Dr Jozef Mengele and others, had a very similar – some might say identical – outlook on the sanctity of human life, to what Juliar and the members of “Emily’s List” do.

Apart from the fact that they were all German speakers, the main distinguishing factors were that the Nazi’s victims were mostly adults, whereas “Emily’s Listers” victims are all unborn babies, and the Nazis never charged a fee, whereas today’s abortion abattoirs do their deed for money.

Maybe Mr Dreyfus needs to put his brain into gear before he puts his overly large mouth into motion.

Oh, by the way, has he found all the incriminating documents on the notorious Gillard/Wilson Gang (aka “Bonnie and Clod”) yet?

Ricola Noxious developed a habit of “losing” documents which implicated her dodgy boss. Are we going to be in any danger of finding that the nation’s new chief law officer is more trustworthy an individual than his predecessor?

    to continue from Rabz…

… did Robyn Williams get in trouble for calling AGW skeptics pedophiles?

  12. Since Downfall was simply based on Trevor-Roper’s convenient fiction […]

Here I was thinking that, officially, the film was based on Inside Hitler’s Bunker by Joachim Fest and Until the Final Hour by Traudl Junge (and Melissa Müller) and based also, unofficially, on Inside the Third Reich by Albert Speer, Hitler’s Last Days: An Eye–Witness Account by Gerhardt Boldt; The Emergency Hospital under the Reich Chancellery: A Doctor’s Experience of Hitler’s death in Berlin by Ernst-Günther Schenck, and Soldat: Reflections of a German Soldier, 1936–1949 by Siegfried Knappe.
Perhaps, Grey, you’d support your contention with evidence.

  13. johno

Loved the way their ABC reported this one.

It was all naughty, naughty, naughty Christopher Pyne for making the Hitler connection with our beloved Julia. Oh and by the way, Dreyfus made a bit of a doofus of himself.

The real story is that new Minister is utter hypocrite and should resign!

“Well Adolf, Dr Jozef Mengele and others, had a very similar – some might say identical – outlook on the sanctity of human life, to what Juliar and the members of “Emily’s List” do.”

ay Up The Worker!, have you noticed that your little logo looks awfully like a swastika?

  15. .

Oh, by the way, has he found all the incriminating documents on the notorious Gillard/Wilson Gang (aka “Bonnie and Clod”) yet?

    Nah.

    Boonie and Clod.

  16. Token

The real story is that new Minister is utter hypocrite and should resign!

I remember when Dreyfus was being held out as one of the “professionals” and “depth” on the Labor back bench.

  17. Grey

Perhaps, Grey, you’d support your contention with evidence.

All these are based on the master narrative established Hugh Trever-Roper in late 1945. He prepared his narrative in response to Marshal Zhukov claiming that the Allies had made a deal with Hitler.
Trever-Roper’s conclusion that this was all the result of complicated gamesmanship by Stalin. However a number of captured Germans such as Hans Baer have written how Stalin used to drag them out in the middle of the night and shout at him to tell him where Hitler was.

My handlers ummed and ahhed about this document

at the beginning they were inclined to think it was just a bizarre piece of misinformation by the CIA – although no one could come up with a convincing motive (but who can fathom the mind of the CIA?)
It was point 18 that persuaded them: the concern about whether Globocnik had any documents stashed away – not a concern a forger would have likely have considered.

  18. Thanks, Grey. I see that, as I suspected, you follow the meaning of “evidence” popularised by the self-serving perpetrators of the pseudo-scientific scam of CAGW—i.e., assertions, unsupported by data = evidence.
All the Germans (such as Hitler’s secretary, Traudl Junge) who wrote memoirs of the last days in Hitler’s bunker were following not their own recall of events but Lord Dacre’s. Of course, it’s so obvious now.
