Critical Rationalist Scholar signed up for the ATA conference

In a sensational coup the ATA has recruited CR Scholar Jeremy Shearmur to join the panel of speakers at the April Conference.

Jeremy was one of the first to pick up the classical (minimum state) liberalism in Popper’s political philosophy, where it is somewhat obscured by the more obvious social democratic elements. Jeremy has been based in Canberra for several years so he is a kind of honourary Aussie. The Austrian-born Popper was also a kind of ANZAC because he was in New Zealand from 1937 to 1945 on an extended working holiday. In his spare time he wrote The Open Society and its Enemies which was his contribution to the war effort. He was barred from participating in uniform on account of his “enemy alien” status.

  1. He was barred from participating in uniform on account of his “enemy alien” status.

Not only that but I thought he went to South Australia as well which is automatic disbarment.

  2. Jeremy Shearmur is a superb presenter. I’ve seen him present a couple of papers on Hayek’s time at the LSE. He’s great value!

  3. Sorry to ask, but what is the ATA? Or are you trying to tease us so we have to follow the link ;)

  4. Well it could be the Anglo-Saxon Tribal Army but in this context it is the Australian Taxpayers Alliance.

I thought all Cats would know about the Alliance.

  5. Sheamur knows the limits as well as the strengths of markets, negative notions of freedom and other simplistic Libertarian nostrums and is thus well placed to add a bit of sanity to proceedings, but the line-up is otherwise so bereft of balance that his attendance is unlikely to save it.
