Some months ago some ALP ministers lined up the major sporting codes of the nation and a shot was fired around the world to signal that we are drug-using cheats and our sports are infected by organized crime and match fixing.
Nothing much in the way of evidence has turned up since that time but a few players from Cronulla have been put on the rack and one club in the AFL has been crucified.
There is more to be said about this and no doubt some of the truth will emerge into the light of day when other more pressing matters have been addressed. I suspect that it will not look pretty for the ALP and their connections in the engine room of this disaster.
Some issues have been raised about the management of the program at Essendon but it is not yet clear to me how serious they are and even if they are extremely serious it is “hyperbowl” to claim that a problem at one club has brought the AFL and the game into disprepute.
On top of that the penalty is grossly disporportionate to the offence. Someone on air advised that employers of firms where workers have DIED in Victoria have been subjected to penalties that are a fraction of the damage inflicted on Essendon.
