Mr Palmer lives in a strange world. How can he claim to be the ”kingmaker” who helped Tony Abbott to the Lodge? After all, his party has taken votes away from the Coalition. The Coalition’s victory would have been larger had Palmer’s party not contested the election. Bill Leak exposes this fantasy.
Palmer may be a buffoon, but his party will probably have some say over the passage of the carbon tax repeal legislation, and other Coalition priorities. At least there is some scope to negotiate with the Palmer United Party – the Greens’ doctrinaire approach doesn’t allow for compromise.
What Palmer craves most of all is publicity, even notoriety. Perhaps Tony Abbott can offer to rename the ”Alexander Maconochie Centre” in Canberra to the “Professor Clive Palmer Gaol”? It would be a little much to have the Clive Palmer wing of Parliament House. But if Mr Palmer wins Fairfax, he won’t have too long to lodge his statement of interests. Will it say that he owns Mr Abbott? Don’t be surprised if it does.
