Football Federation Australia is seeking compensation for the $43 million spent on Australia’s bid for the World Cup, won by Qatar. All of this money came from the Australian taxpayer. The full costs may never be known, although the Abbott Government should commission a forensic audit of the bid and the Government’s involvement.
It would be a further blow to the taxpayer if Frank Lowy and the FFA keep any compensation from Sepp Blatter and his cronies. Lowy overegged the bid, encouraging a Rudderless Government to pour more and more money down the drain of a bid which could never win.
Lowy can redeem himself – to some extent – by assiduously working to get compensation from FIFA and turning it all over to consolidated revenue.
