The Abbott government has gotten off to a poor start by only sacking three Canberra mandarins.
Andrew Metcalfe, a long-serving head of the Immigration Department, but most recently head of the Agriculture Department, is to be replaced, as is Blair Comley, most recently head of the Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism, and formerly head of the Department of Climate Change.
Dr Don Russell, a former ambassador to Washington and a long-time chief adviser to treasurer, then prime minister, Paul Keating, is also understood to have lost his job as head of the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research.
The three men are believed to be the only secretaries to be losing their jobs with the change of government.
It is being reported on Twitter that Martin Parkinson has announced he will step down next year.
