We live near a large billabong in Queensland. There is a lot of bird life, including two swans whom we have named Mary and Joseph. (Jesus seems to have left home.)
There are signs everywhere telling people not to feed the birds. There is even an explanation. It is harmful to the birds, they develop diabetes, they become less adept at fending from themselves.
Notwithstanding, it is virtually a daily occurrence in which the birds are fed, normally by a family with a young child. To be sure, the tots do enjoy the experience but tots enjoy lots and lots of things. Taking a bucket and spade down to the beach is an example.
I haven’t given up saying anything. People become very indignant if challenged, claiming that it is some how their right to feed the birds ( ‘uman right, perhaps?)and that they are not doing any harm, really.
There’s a metaphor there. And Sinc’s cartoon taken from his Facebook page sums it up even better.
