No one ostracised this year

As no one person received 30 per cent of the votes cast (893), there will be no ostracism this year. Suggestions for future surveys are welcome.

The top votes were

  • Steve from Brisbane: 67 (8 per cent of the votes cast)
  • Julian Burnside: 65
  • M0nty and Numbers: 64 each
  • Tim Flannery: 43
  • Kevin Rudd: 41
  • Stephen Conroy: 33
  • Mark Dreyfus: 30.

Somewhat interesting that more people are voting to ostracise the likes of Steve from Brisbane – a harmless crank – than Dr Evil himself, Stephen Conroy.

  1. Kaboom

I should point out that only three of the arseholes are in fact politicians, which was the basic parameter for ostracising when this was first suggested.

Unfortunately, it seemed to have morphed onto “persons” deserving of ostracism, a far wider field. Limited to “politicians”, it would have been a worthy survey, and likely to have garnered a strong result.

Poor definition of parameters for a basically sound concept, Samuel…

  2. Empire Strikes Back

Somewhat interestingdisturbing that more people are voting to ostracise the likes of Steve from Brisbane – a harmless crank – than Dr Evil himself, Stephen Conroy.

This troubles me greatly. Come on people, priorities please.

    The Lying Slapper?

  3. Wow. I wasn’t polling that strongly when I first checked. Maybe it was my efforts today that paid off?

  4. JamesK

To be fair to Stephen Conroy at least he has a pair of gonads so men and women could at least relate to him on a ‘we come from the same planet’ type basis

  5. The Pugilist

The left, with their innate tendencies towards group think and ‘follow the (factional) leader’ do ostracism so much better. Libertarians and to a lesser extent conservatives are too independently minded to be herded behind a cause.

  6. Lucie

Quelle surprise. The backyard sandpit mentality trumps principle – and answering the question properly.

Pugilist, you’ve got your libertarians and conservatives round the wrong way. Libertarians do ostracism just foin.

  7. Abu Chowdah

What a waste of a vote. We cold have been rid of Marr, Carlton, Rudd or Conroy.

  8. calli

Frankly, I’m surprised. After his beastly comments on the NSW fires, I thought Bandt would be in (or is that out) with a chance.

  9. JC

Damn, I forgot to vote for you Debbie. I’m sure that would have attracted votes of stepfordian proportions if not much, much more.

  10. Alfonso

Yep, the unfortunate Bolta by implication prefers Conroy to Palmer, Clive is apparently a buffoon and that’s a crime bigger than Gillard’s.
No matter Clive’s economic confusion and personal hubris he is but a simple clown, Conroy was a very, very dangerous clown driven by the resentments of pommie class ideology.

  11. JC

    Samuel

I’m really surprised that Julian Burnside scored do high. Has he been in the news recently annoying everyone? It’s not a name that to me seems to come to mind so easily. Sort of like… oh that idiot again and then quickly forgotten.

  12. Lucie

    No show without Punch.

I know you’ve got some creepy obsession with me, but it’s beyond embarrassing even for you, OstrichMan.

  13. jupes

Somewhat interesting that more people are voting to ostracise the likes of Steve from Brisbane – a harmless crank – than Dr Evil himself, Stephen Conroy.

Yea but SfB was obvioulsy annoying people right at the time they voted.

Conroy is now a harmless crank himself. If the gormless twit ever gets the levers of power again, then we deserve all we get.

  14. JC

You’re confused and baffled again Debbie. You’re confusing obsession with annoyance. You’re in most ways far more annoying than the winner Stepford. No “quelle surprise” there to most people.

  15. james

Alfonso you may have a point there. I shudder when I think about how palmer will screw up the current parliament, but compared to the union party he is truly benign.

  16. blogstrop

Burnside is a hardy perennial weed.

  17. james

I feel a late nomination for JC coming on.

  18. Conroy doesn’t post here thank goodness.

  19. Samuel J

Kaboom is right. This had been designed for politicians. It morphed into a grandest. JC also makes a good point about the annoyance factor. How many times have you wanted to throw the shoe at some idiot on TV? Burnside is in the news at the moment – if the vote had been held at some other time he may not have received even one vote.

  20. JC

I feel a late nomination for JC coming on.

I had four votes. What’s the bet Fatboy, Debbie Downer (Lucille), that bloodsucking leech TonyN or Captain Spuds voted for me.

  21. JamesK

Conroy doesn’t post here thank goodness.

Whaddya mean I don’t post here?

  22. Lucie

I cast no vote in this spiteful little ballot. I believe offenders against humanity, such as OstrichMan, should remain as an example to all. Preferably in (medieval ) stocks. With a regularly replenished supply of rotten tomatoes nearby. And Barry Manilow playing on loop in the background.

  23. Tom

I notice that Lucy now appears sporadically for the sole purpose of trolling because she hates the Cat in its current form and, like a doctor’s wife, feels compelled to continue her campaign to change it. This is close to the official definition of insanity.

  24. Lucie

Hahahaha. Don’t blame me for how my opinion makes you feel, Tom.

Doctor’s wife?? I tink dat’d be closer to your Lizzie than me.

  25. JC

Not voting for you would be out of character Debbie – an act against nature itself. Stop the lying as it’s really annoying. In fact it’s just slightly less annoying than when you’re trying to make some pretend highfalutin intellectual comment which invariably goes flat or those stupid facebook-like snippets.

  26. Tom

Don’t blame me for how my opinion makes you feel, Tom.

What the fuck is that about? Anyone know?

  27. JC

What the fuck is that about? Anyone know?

Dunno. She’s managed to confuse extreme annoyance with obsession a little while ago. It’s funny what you end up coming out of mental asylums.

  28. Holden

Voted Conroy, but thought ostracism meant to be shoved in a ostriches ball sack whilst it’s head was buried deep in sand. Don’t think Steve form Brissy deserves to be up there considered he post’s here for self-flagellation, Da vinci code style. Silas is his avatar, you are his Gods.

  29. Alfonso

    Bwaaa….drink, post, fail, Holden….

  30. james

Also burnside was portrayed by Rhys Muldoon in some ABC series. Case closed.

  31. Beef

What the fuck is that about? Anyone know?

Don’t blame me for how my opinion makes you feel, Tom.

You are not to hold Lucie responsible if you think she’s a fuckwit.

    Parents/Lover perhaps?

  32. Aliice

Look JC this whole rename thingy of yours is getting confusing and I am already confused daily by too much.

Am I to take it Lucie has been renamed Debbie by you?

  33. JC

Am I to take it Lucie has been renamed Debbie by you?

Yea. The full name is Debbie Downer, or just Debbie for short.

  34. Andrew

I’m really surprised that Julian Burnside scored so high. Has he been in the news recently annoying everyone?

Are you fucking kidding me with this???

  35. Aliice

    Lucie

    Preferably in (medieval ) stocks.

Just between you and me Debbie its far more likely JC is in mediaeval jocks than stocks. He is not the type to be in stocks unless you mean shares, in which case he is up to his neck in them.

  36. Motelier

I nominated and voted for Bill Ludwig.

Without big bill the last 6 years would never have happened.

  37. Andrew

Anyhow, I posted my thoughts – a primary election first, and only 1 nominee per category (current dangerous politician, lifetime service award for a has-been, warmist, leftist fellow-traveller, other random grubs, brain-dead Cat trolls).

I suggest rerunning with the winners in each category, and treating it as the primaries. I think it’s SfB, Burnside, Flannery, Rudd, Conroy, Taj, Bolt.

  38. JC

Are you fucking kidding me with this???

No, not at all. If he’s not mentioned in the media I wouldn’t think of him.

  39. Aliice

Oh come on ….nary a vote for any of the (highly offensive) Obeids? What about the legover man or slippery pete and whoiswhatisface from the health unions. Still I suppose when they are going to jail, they dont get any rights to a vote.

  40. candy

    Hey Mr Samuel J
Perhaps you could have a survey for who Catallaxians like next week? More positive and inclusive. It’s nicer to look on the bright side.

  41. JC

    Candy

I beauty of the Cat, which you ought to know by now, is that will invariably end up disliking everyone.

  42. stackja

I voted to ostracise Gough Whitlam as he created the mess we are still in.
Whether anyone should be ostracised from Cat is in the hands of the Cat boss. We are but visitors who should be polite to the owners.

  43. Imagine if I had posted anything for the past week. I demand a recount.

  44. JC

Lol Monst… Wife let you post a comment? What’s your comment ration per week now? Two.

  45. I have just bought a new house, JC. These things take time in life.

  46. Motelier

    Monty,

    A new house?

How much paint does it need?

I have King beds for sale (second hand of course) good quality ensembles with health care.

  47. JC

I have just bought a new house, JC. These things take time in life.

Same area where you were living before?

  48. mOnty, I hope you noticed at today’s open thread, quite a few of the regulars have already crowned Ted Cruz a spectacular star of the GOP who should run for President in 2016.

As I noted there, this is from the same blog that was excited about Herman Cain…

  49. Conroy is now a harmless crank himself.

Yes. I think if this had been held around red-underpants time, he might have scored much higher. Most of the animus against Labor had been vented in the election already, and SfB had been allowed back in to curse us once more with his drooling explosions of oral excreta.

  50. Elizabeth (Lizzie) B.

Doctor’s wife?? I tink dat’d be closer to your Lizzie than me.

Oi. Who is taking my name in vain?

Doctor’s Wives are known political drips, Greenies, fools.
Just because Da Hairy Ape has a buck or two doesn’t make me one of those.

Foitin’ wards, dere, as the man himself says when whiskey-toned.
Lucky I am having a teetotal experience tonite. I will ignore this terrible slur.

  51. Lucie

    Aliice

He can wear the medieval jocks in the stocks.

I’d vote for you and Candy in a Catallaxy ‘Who to embrace and shower with love and affection’ survey 🙂

  52. Lucie

Oh Lizzie! Tom was using it in the politically pejorative sense – against moi, of course – not your loverly self. I tossed it back in the more factual sense of a character on the blog who speaks of being married to a rather well-heeled, professional type … a bit like a doctor. My character is supposedly not long out of a psych hospital. Recently changed her name to Debbie (perhaps to escape a dark past??) But not married to a doctor. not in the cutrent series, anyway. It is confusing, as Aliice says …

  53. Pickles

Hats off SoB. You’ve rung the shed. This is big.

  54. Oh come on

Like I said in that thread, it’s useful to keep the ALP clowns around. They’re a touchstone for shit. Steve of Brisbane, on the other hand, is just an oxygen thief who serves no purpose whatsoever.

  55. Rabz

Perhaps the eventual winner could be gifted a feshly knitted kangaroo to keep them company during their time in the wilderness?

  56. grumpy

I reckon the biggest problem was the sheer size of the field. I wanted to number about a dozen boxes below the line. Can you post the top ten in a new survey so we may actually get a winner?

  57. Tapdog

    JC @ 8.02pm

I’m really surprised that Julian Burnside scored do high…..quickly forgotten.

Burnside got my vote because of his activities as a refugee advocate not simply because he is a serial idiot. He dissembles on the issue of border protection. He is dismissive of security risks. He continues to push the line that compassion overrules all else. In all he is one of the most prominent enablers of a wicked trade which has killed thousands-and those numbers include only what we can reasonably surmise. Excluded from that estimate is an unknown and unknowable number of souls who were simply chucked overboard 100km from their points of departure after having been relieved of their valuables.

Nobody else on that list has made such a direct contribution to the deaths of thousands. He is the clear winner.

  58. Bruce

I’ve been told that SfB was offering people money to vote for him. He was said to be desperate to raise his profile prior to setting up his own website.

  59. Same area where you were living before?

Same side of the city, further south.

mOnty, I hope you noticed at today’s open thread, quite a few of the regulars have already crowned Ted Cruz a spectacular star of the GOP who should run for President in 2016.

As I noted there, this is from the same blog that was excited about Herman Cain…

Yeah, the thing with stars is that they burn out after a while. Cruz hasn’t got billions of years worth of hydrogen to burn through, though. People said that about Rubio three months ago and now he’s dwindled down to a red dwarf, apparently.

It’s still between Christie and Jeb Bush IMO, anyone from the Tea Party minority faction would merely be a spoiler.

  60. Do you think Americans are ready to vote for a man shaped like a barrel for President?

He really looks like a heart attack or stroke waiting to happen…

  61. Gab

Why not? We had a PM shaped luck a duck.

  62. Gab

    hahaha luck a duck…no, like a duck

  63. Besides his urgent need for stomach banding, surely the Tea Party hasn’t forgiven him for saying good things about Obama after Sandy. The Tea Party (like people here) genuinely think this was a case of fraternising with a Communist Muslim enemy ho wants to see the country turn into Cuba.

  64. Gab

    a Communist Muslim enemy ho

hahaha wins the interwebs for Best Obama Description of 2013. Well done, SFB.

  65. If wingnuts thought Obama was evil, wait until they have to face Hillary. Any GOP candidate who doesn’t openly canvas the possibility that she is the Antichrist won’t get any TP votes.

  66. You seem very cheery this morning Gab. Only a week ago you were early morning commenting about Obama’s evil plan to demoralise the Marines by making them wear a funny cap, and how Obama declaring himself President forever would soon follow.

  67. Gab

You’re hilarious today, SFB. Btw, that “funny cap” that the President of the United States is concerning himself over is just a copy of the French Legionnaires cap.

  68. Gab

Quick, SFB, give your artistic talents a go and draw up a pic using these with thought bubbles declaring “Hilary is the antiChrist”.

  69. Tony N

“Somewhat interesting that more people are voting to ostracise the likes of Steve from Brisbane – a harmless crank ”

Sooo, on a blog pretty much inhabited by cranks, I’m surprised he even registered.

  70. JC

If wingnuts thought Obama was evil, wait until they have to face Hillary. Any GOP candidate who doesn’t openly canvas the possibility that she is the Antichrist won’t get any TP votes.

No, it would be the wrong way to go. Hillary would be fought on the issues like kenyancare and the need for a new beginning.

Monster, one week in NY and youre the expert now? Please.

  71. JC

I wanted to number about a dozen boxes below the line

Yea, that’s a good idea. Next year we ought to have above and below the line voting. There’s no reason we shouldn’t be able to expel a group of imbeciles in one fell swoop. There are far too many difficult choices.
Conroy, the slapper, Rudd, von roxon, flannery, Hamilton, wand. They should all be sent to manus island as a group.

  72. .

Tony N is pissed that his sacred cows (“Industry” Super and “The Tree of Knowledge”) have been slain with facts as the hoaxes that they are.

I’d be pretty delusional and bitter too if a life’s beliefs and works were exposed as a financial scam ran by someone else I looked up to as a champion of the underprivileged.

  73. Tony N

Only one super fund I’m interested in Dotty, and that’s mine. Your post prompted me to take a peek at it and what do I find? After nearly two years of drawing on it I have $21K more than I started with! Can’t complain about that.

  74. .

Sure Tony, you can’t complain about compulsion and below market rates of return.

It’s alright, the state sanctioned theft is done in the name of enriching union bosses like Michael Williamson or Ed Husic.

  75. Tony N

“Sure Tony, you can’t complain about compulsion and below market rates of return.’

9% below market? Could have changed my plan and had 17% over 12 months to June, but why be greedy? Still smarting from 35c or whatever it was are we? Try not to live in the past Dotty.

  76. JC

You bloodsucking leech, TonyN. In a fair world that money in your super ought to be confiscated and returned to the rightful owners – the people you caused to be unemployed through your actions.

  77. Tony N

Sorry people, cannot stay and keep you entertained, I have a conference to attend over the next two days so will be gone until at least 5:00 pm both days. Enjoy your weekend (and try do do something a little more productive, eh).

  78. JC

Thanks for letting us know what you’re doing TonyN. You’ll be missed, you leech.

  79. .

    9% below market?

Yes you dolt now get lost.

Could have changed my plan and had 17% over 12 months to June, but why be greedy?

    Deadshit.

…and you now you admit that unions legally have an advantage over workers in determining where funds go…your response is don't live in the past

As most theieves would say to their victims, you nimrod.

  80. Oh come on

So Tony N’s off to his Amway conference.

Advises in passing for others to be productive. OK. Never come back here again, Tony. You are one of the least productive members of the site.

    What a joker.

  81. Armadillo

As no one person received 30 per cent of the votes cast (893), there will be no ostracism this year

That’s very disappointing. Samuel, any chance you would reconsider and change this to a “first past the post” proposition?

  82. Elizabeth (Lizzie) B.

“Doctor’s Wife” is a pejorative term for any brainless woman, married to a man bringing in some substantial bacon, where the silly cow votes for Greenfilth and the like.

Nothing to do with her husband’s actual occupation.
It’s just that some specialist medicos are in that league, lower end of it.
Nothing to do with me, either.
Herr Doktor Irish Ape, M.Phil (Hons), PhD (very ancient places) is a businessman.
Specialist toe-cutter, deal-maker, and turnaround man.
Would not tolerate a “doctor’s wife” in his bed for pillow-talk. 🙂

  83. Tony N

Hullo everyone, I’m back. Been a long day and I’m absolutely knackered. Doesn’t look like too much has happened here in the last 10 or so hours.

  84. Splatacrobat

You may not have made it onto the ostracised list TonyN but we can pull an Amish trick and just shun you.

  85. Aliice

    Lizzie

“Doctor’s Wife” is a pejorative term for any brainless woman, married to a man bringing in some substantial bacon, where the silly cow votes for Greenfilth and the like.

Lizzie I fear you have some streak of green towards Doctors wives. Most whom I know are very respectable and do not vote green and nor do their doctor husbands. Doctors and wives were once the versy essence of liveral blue so I cant let you go aroubd spreading angst amongst doctors or their wives Lizzie. Thats a bit out of order and not all conservatives happen to be business men like da hairy ape and nor is it exclsuive to business types.

You of all people Lizzie know (should know) well the damage that a broad sweeping generalisation can do.

  86. Aliice

liveral blue = liberal blue above

  87. Aliice

I will add to that Lizzie

Being an old retrenched early nursing sister )on the grounds I have nit had a patient for 28 years – fair enough)..some of the smartest women I know grabbed a dsoctor at the age of 18 to 25. Now Lizzie, in your own tales you came across the hairy Ape from a background none too rich and slightly misguided, hanging around with left romantics.
Spare Doctors wives ill will Lizzie. They may have more in common with you than you think.

  88. Elizabeth (Lizzie) B.

OK Aliice, they are spared. By me, anyway.
Maybe the people who coined that term though should revise it.
(although I have known a few cases where it actually did apply – lol)

  89. Elizabeth (Lizzie) B.

Been a long day and I’m absolutely knackered

In common humanity, Tony N, I will sympathise with you.

I am similarly done in, so goodnight all.

  90. struth

Steve from Brisbane and numbers and the like are important to have here. It is important for us to remember that a lefty pissing into the wind, his face sprayed with urine, will find a scientist to prove it is urea, then claim he is only sweating . After the Australian verdict this last election and the corrupt socialist arseholes that just stuffed the country, there are still people around that refuse to turn and still keep pissing on themselves.

  91. Pete D

Samuel, Just to help out and because I have a feeling you have too much time on your hands, for the next round of votes for ostracism, you could have the voting as preferential. That should keep you busy for hours maybe even days.
