Andrew Bolt has drawn attention to Hal Colebatch’s account of the campaign of sabotage against the allied war effort by the communists in Austalia while Hitler and Stalin were friends. This is a timely moment to recall the worldwide intellectual resistance to communism by the Congress of Cultural Freedom and its organ in Australia, Quadrant magazine. This started as a quarterly in 1957, edited by James McAuley and it recently celebrated 500 editions. The whole archive from the year dot (1957) can now be read on line. This is a priceles cultural treasure and it stands as a tribute to the many people who supported the magazine and those who contributed to it. So hasten to the Quadrant site and sign on! I am not sure about the level of subscription that you need to access the archive.
As it happens, last night I launched my latest Amazon ebook which is a summary of the contents of the first 20 editions of Quadrant (1957-1961). This was supposed to appear many months ago but I focussed on various other books, especially the Popular Popper series and that delayed the appearance of The McAuley Quadrants.
I don’t want to cause a stampede but I have decided to increase the price of the book by a dollar which will take effect in about 12 hours when the book is re-published with the new price and a few typos corrected.
