Dealing with trifles

obama and bush umbrellas

A very interesting little photo vignette picked up at Barack and Michelle: The Love Story. George W. holds the umbrella for Laura while Michelle holds her own. Which reminded me of this from Schopenhauer:

A man shows his character in just the way he deals with trifles – for then he is off his guard. This will often afford a good opportunity of observing the boundless egoism of a man’s nature, and his total lack of consideration of others: and if these defects show themselves in small things, or merely in his general demeanour, you will find that they also underlie his actions in matters of importance, although he may disguise the fact. This is the opportunity which should not be missed. If in the little affairs of every day – the trifles of life, those matters to which de minimis non applies – a man is inconsiderate and seeks only what is advantageous or convenient to himself, to the prejudice of other’s rights; if he appropriates to himself that which belongs to all alike, you may be sure there is no justice in his heart, and that he would be a scoundrel on a wholesale scale, only that the law and compulsion bind his hands. Do not trust him beyond the door. He is not afraid to break the laws of his own private circle, will break those of the State when he can do so with impunity.

If and when you understand Chicago and it’s political scene you will all realise Obama would still be considered a mulatto if it where not for Michele and therefore would never have ‘made it’.

The expression of disgust on her face when he was having a selfie with Cameron and the Danish PM…he’ll be sleeping in the spare bedroom for a while.

Fits Obama. Obama is part of Chicago politics and the rule of the Daley family.

Richard J. Daley Daley’s career in politics began when he became a Democratic precinct captain; although he was a lifelong Democrat, Daley was first elected to the Illinois House of Representatives as a Republican in 1936. This was a matter of political opportunism and the peculiar setup for legislative elections in Illinois at the time, which allowed Daley to take the place on the ballot of the recently deceased Republican candidate David Shanahan.

For heaven’s sake, Obama does not sleep with his “wife”, the marriage is a front. He would be more than happy to be chucked out of the bedroom and be off to the bathhouse.

  5. She may have always held her own brolly, being a good feminist. But I’d prefer a George to hold one over me, if I had the choosing.

  6. Also a brolly would have made him less photographable at that point.

  7. mizaris

Pertinent remarks given Obama’s recent behaviour.

  8. nerblnob

I’d say the more relevant consideration is that Michele is much taller and it would be awkward to hold the umbrella over her head.

I deal with trifles by eating the jelly first.

The bloke on the left is excited by it all, or he’s heavily armed, or both.

It could have been written for Billy the Pieman.

George W has been treated appallingly by the media. The media has always done this to Republican Presidents, regardless of their true character. In being so partisan the media serves what it sees as its own interests, which, as we have seen here recently, come before national interests.

When I was newly arrived in Chicago, I got chewed out a by woman because I dared hold the door open for her. I was first, what was I suposed to do? Just let it slam on her I suppose. I wouldn’t blame Super Barry for this one.

  13. Jo Smyth

    Greg,, my thoughts exactly.

  14. sdfc

If that bloke is excited he is heavily armed. Either that or he has very short legs.

  15. David

He’s no bloody gentleman that’s for sure. SWMBO is a very strong feminist but let me forget to open the door or hold the brolly and I get reminded that once I was “an Officer and a Gentleman”.

But then Barry has been neither.

    :-)

  16. David

“Jump” if he is excited at that angle he has a problem.

Have been watching Kevin Pietersen since he first started playing for England. Anyone agree he is one of the most overrated batsmen ever to walk to the crease, or am I alone in my thoughts.

  18. sdfc

Good record but should never have played for England again after his treachery in South Africa a couple of years ago.

Yep. This photo was most likely taken after the selfie so it’s no surprise that she doesn’t give a shit about the President getting wet. LOL.

I wonder what Schopenhauer would have made of the likes of Thompson, Slipper and so on?

a man is inconsiderate and seeks only what is advantageous or convenient to himself, to the prejudice of other’s rights; if he appropriates to himself that which belongs to all alike, you may be sure there is no justice in his heart, and that he would be a scoundrel on a wholesale scale, only that the law and compulsion bind his hands. This is why a RC into the unions is required. They are selecting the clowns that sit on the left. And the same should aply to the Liberals. A close eye should be kept on even the smallest impropriety – Slipper being a prime example. That’s one that “our side” should have booted years ago.

  21. This was one of my favourite US presidential photos.

    L-R:

    George W Bush, actually praying.
Mrs G W Bush, actually praying.
George H Bush, looking the way most men look when their wife makes them go to church for some special occasion.
Bill Clinton, who knows the value of a good camera angle, with his church face on.
Condy Rice, looking overwhelmed and surprisingly uncertain.

    A thousand words, all right.

  22. gabrianga

Isn’t that the delusional phsyco who stuffed up the translation of the President5′s speech at the Mandela funeral ?

  23. sparky

“George W has been treated appallingly by the media”
    Also stand up comedians…
    It’s not rocket surgery.

  24. Patrickb

Good grief, you guys have really let yourself go. Do you even bother to get out of the dressing gown before lunch?

  25. mcmillan

Have we become this petty? Besides, that George-held umbrella is nowhere near over either Laura or him. So there’s no way to know who he’s holding it for. But, since we’re being petty, it does demonstrate W’s incompetence at even the most basic task.
