Australia Day ambush

Yet another political ambush for the Abbott government from the cultural left.

Adam Goodes has just been named Australian of the Year for 2014.

To be sure Goodes is one of the finest AFL footballers to ever play the game and has tremendous talent – yet it isn’t clear that this is why why he won the award. Rather:

The Australian of the Year 2014, Adam Goodes, was honoured for his leadership and advocacy in the fight against racism both on the sporting field and within society – a stance which has won him the admiration and respect of people around Australia.

That is one way to look at a rather nasty incident in May 2013 when Goodes had a teenage girl separated from her guardian and subsequently bullied, intimidated and interrogated by Victoria police for two hours.

A lot of people like to compare Adam Goodes’ gesture with Nicky Winmar’s ‘similar’ 1993 gesture. To my mind, however, there is a huge difference. Winmar pointed to himself with a ‘stuff you all, here I stand’ attitude. Goodes pointed to a 13-year old girl when he sent that same message.

Update I: On the bright side Goodes won’t be able to embarrass the government by campaigning against children being separated from their parents while being held in detention.

Update II: The 13-year old as described by Miranda Devine:

THE 13-year-old girl vilified for accidentally making a racist slur against indigenous footballer Adam Goodes is the daughter of a single mother on a disability pension, from one of the most underprivileged and powerless backgrounds possible.

Yet the elites of Australia’s sport and media have not stopped smashing her and her family as racist rednecks.

As one correspondent says, “Pick on a pubescent bogan, become Australian of the year.”

Mr Cry-Baby Goodes does not deserve the award.

Better that it had gone to Michael Smith for his tireless work on the AWU scandal, or the Morcombe family for the “Daniel Morcombe Foundation”.

    I am utterly disgusted.

  2. Andrew

The PC brigade wins again. They don’t represent real Aussies

  3. Mick Gold Coast QLD

From Andrew on the Open Forum thread at 6:49 pm:

“Adam Goodes Australian of the Year….more like victim of the year”

Gutless, self absorbed, perennial race baiting millionaire floats to top of bowl – just marvelous.

That is the most amusing thing I have heard in ages. There goes the neighborhood.

  4. Tracey

An appalling choice. I wonder how that poor girl and her family are feeling right now?

  5. Yurrak Unt

Adam Goodes, Australia Day is a time of mourning: ‘It’s a very sad day for a lot of our mob.’

How true now. I will now ignore the whole political side of the day.

  7. Grigory M

WTF? Mr Hankey is Australian of the Year? Australia really is a toilet.

  8. JMH

Whilst the Socialists control the selection criteria etc for these award wankfests, they must be treated as garbage. Worthless.

I lost any interest in the Australia Day awards when Flannery was gonged.

Same with the Walkleys. One click and they’re gone!

  9. Alfonso

Affirmative action Tone. He’s going to try it again with the Constitution, to make it compliant with the political ambitions of leftard activist High Court judges.

  10. Frank

He will have to buy a suit that fits properly and get good at not saying ridiculous things. I have faith in the former being possible.

He could wind up being a stealth candidate the same way Flannery turned out to be.

  11. GC

I can tell you first hand, a certain guy is a real sleeze. Let’s just say, a certain person chased my young PA relentlessly when he was in a relationship.

    Great role model.

Repeating: this is a highly divisive appointment that looks like a dogwhistle endorsed by a PM who desperately wants to be loved by people who will always detest him.

  14. Bruce of Newcastle

The irony in all this is the 13 year old was praising Goodes. Only the left can find insult in hero worship.

Adam Goodes, Australia Day is a time of mourning: ‘It’s a very sad day for a lot of our mob.’

Adam Goodes Australian of the Year

Of all the good people in Australia who contribute to make others’ lives better, they picked this idiot for this stupid contest becuase a little girl called him an ‘ape’.

    Shame, Australia. Shame.

  17. kae

AotY is a farce and has been for some time.

  18. Obio

If he is the best we have to offer we are in a heap of trouble.

Adam Goodes, Australia Day is a time of mourning: ‘It’s a very sad day for a lot of our mob.’

Indigenous people are just itching to go back to their pre-1788 utopia.

  20. Notafan

If Mr Goodes really thinks that 26-Jan is invasion day then accepting Australian of the year is kind of hmm unusual.
I think given the apparent controversy of celebrating Australia Day he is the most appropriate person to be chosen.
    Well done, that government.

  21. Indigenous people are just itching to go back to their pre-1788 utopia.

Yet it’s rather simple to move to the far outback, I understand, and avoid all contact with welfare agencies, Western health and modern technology.

  22. calli

Well, that’s this year’s Australia Day Riot taken care of then.

  23. jupes

Adam Gilchrist hang your head in shame.

You are no longer accepted as a Western Australian.

  24. Demosthenes

Why sportsmen and women ever get nominated, let alone win Australian of the Year, is beyond me. So they’re good at their entertainment job. So what?

  25. H B Bear

    Depressingly predictable.

  26. Carpe Jugulum

Go drown in your own piss.

I think someone has some mommy issues.

  27. Fleeced

    Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha…

This is what it means to be an Aussie bloke. Have a hissy-fit about being “bullied” by a 13 year old girl and get her crucified on TV. What a survivor!

It aint his fault for being called names, of course… (and unlike others at the Cat, I did recognise it as a racial slur), and charitably, maybe he didn’t know it was a 13 year old girl before he caused his little scene… but it takes a certain level of doucheness to accept AotY, knowing full well he wouldn’t get the nod if not for that incident.

Check out some of the other nominees, though… from “anti-bully campaigners” to “community leaders”. Perhaps he was the best of a bad bunch[1]

[1] Figure of speech. Not referring to bananas.

  28. whyisitso

So you now get Australian of the Year for bullying a 13-year-old girl. I’m absolutely ashamed of the Committee that did this.

  29. Notafan

    Well

Sportsperson and/or climate scientist (preferably both at the same time simultaneously ) = hero
    Next year’s pick Chris Turney.
    You know it makes sense.

  30. Rossini

What exactly did he do to gain such a gong?
    Play football?
Accuse a young girl of being racist?

  31. Foggyfig

This man passed away in 2013 but Dr Ernie Manea epitomises what I think the person who is Australian of the Year should be. 😉 and it is not someone who is in a highly paid position that gives nothing or very little to our communities. There are many more ordinary Australians who I think are far more worthy.

    http://www.abc.net.au/local/stories/2013/10/16/3870605.htm

  32. Walter Plinge

I only ready the headline. I haven’t heard of the bloke but I thought, well, this ticks the right boxes: (1) non-pallor indigenous person, (2) sportsman.

It really is hard to credit that this is the best the Council could come up with. Surely they had nominations for business people, scientists, engineers, and so on: people who have contributed something of value to the community above and beyond their employment.

  33. Is yet another sports-person the best we can do?

Why don’t we rotate Australian of the Year between sports and save us the time and expense of having to choose?

If an Australian cures cancer they’d better hope it happens in a year we don’t win the Ashes because no-one would care…

  34. Noddy

Australian of the Year should be shifted to April 1st.
As for the 13 year old, a quote from “Matthew 11:25
At that time Jesus said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.”
I am a proud Australian and of my white ancestry.
    This is a bloody disgrace!

  35. jupes

As a supporter of West Coast, I have never liked Adam Goodes. Too many times his brilliance as a footballer played a large part in our defeat. The bastard.

Nevertheless, I have always admired and respected him as a footballer. He is in the top ten best footballers I have ever seen. Courageous, skillful and utterly determined he is deserving of all the accolades he has earned and the many more he will earn as a player on retirement. The game he played in the 2012 grand final was a classic. Limited with an injured knee, he was nevertheless instumental in the Swan’s victory. They would not have won without him.

Unfortunately the reason he has been named Australian of the Year has nothing to do with his skill and courage as a footballer. It is because he – a 100 kg man – pointed to a 13 yr old girl in the crowd and demanded to officials that she be evicted from the ground. The events that followed i.e. the deprivation of liberty of the girl, had nothing to do with Goodes but added to the sordidness of the affair.

It is utterly shameful that Goodes has been lauded as courageous for this action, which in any other time would be seen for what it was – a pathetic overreaction to an insult which probably wasn’t even racist. What does it say about our country that an action which Blind Freddy would regard as bullying is lauded as worthy of one of our highest honours?

I am ashamed of my country.

  36. Tracey

There’s another important issue here peoples. What more does Our Cate have to do to be nominated?
Oh, wait. She’s the wrong colour. As you were.

  37. Rich

AotY is becoming as meaningless as the British honours system, but I suppose at least we know this is down to the whims of 10 people picked for no discernible reason

Normally I’d be opposed to opening it up to populism but I say let the people have their say, can’t be much worse

  38. steve

Goodes had a teenage girl separated from her guardian and subsequently bullied, intimidated and interrogated by Victoria police for two hours

I blame the fat, hairy Greek

What a selection. Who appoints these loons?

  41. brennan

I think Goodes (off field) is a bit of a twat and not deserving of the award.
However, I lover the Australia est 1788 banner.

  42. whyisitso

I am ashamed of my country.

Well I’m not! The people who perpetrated this were insulting Australia, not part of Australia.

  43. Fleeced

Adam Goodes, Australia Day is a time of mourning: ‘It’s a very sad day for a lot of our mob.’

The left love self-loathing so much that they want it for Australia as a whole. They want Australia Day to be a sombre day, where we reflect upon our sins, rather than a celebration (unless we’re a minority, then we spend it in self-pity about how oppressed we are)

  44. Fleeced

I am ashamed of my country.

    That’s lefty talk!

It’s also rather silly. embarrassment, perhaps – at worst – but ashamed? Seriously? Because of some committee? Dude, get a grip!

Why sportsmen and women ever get nominated, let alone win Australian of the Year, is beyond me. So they’re good at their entertainment job. So what?

    Way to miss the point.

Goodes was not nominated for his sporting prowess but because he called a 13 yr old girl a racist.

However if someone has to be awarded Australian of the Year, I actually agree with sportsmen being nominated and am somewhat disappointed that Casey Stoner never won because being a two time world champion in such a popular and competitive sport is exceptional.

  50. Mindfree

I sent this to Abbott (since he emails me of his “achievements” and apparently he does read replies

    Hi Tony

So Adam Goodes is Oz of the year, a man who publicly humiliated a 13 yo girl who called him an ape at a game in May last year. She was then treated Nazi style by the AFL goons and subsequently was given the derisive treatment the 16th century would have been proud of (guilty until proven innocent by the way, did those goons get sacked for kidnapping and holding her against her will without adult representation?) You could have weighed in on this but no you just want to be loved by those who will always hate you.

Well done Tony – endorsing a selection of a man who wants to divide and drive a wedge in this society

  51. Bear Necessities

At least that could have found an aboriginal sportsman who doesn’t play a girls sport. How about Artie Beetson, Gordon Tallis, Preston Campbell, Steve Renouf, Laurie Daley or Cliffy Lyons as AotY.

  52. Sinclair Davidson

Twitter parody George Brandishes has tried on some trolling:

This is shameful. Just shameful. If anything we should be giving HER the AOTY award for her bravery in standing firm against this kind of leftist groupthink vilification.

The whole episode just got me so… hot and emotional, to see a young, defenceless, virginal, white girl being intimidated by a big, heaving, muscular, black beast like that. It just really gets my blood up just thinking about it.

  53. Tom

Goodes was not nominated for his sporting prowess but because he called a 13 yr old girl a racist.

In other words, the people who select the Australian of the Year now believe the purpose of Australia Day is to encourage Australians to be ashamed of their country. FMD.

I disagree that calling a player an ape is necessarily racist. We always called big opposing players apes, gorillas and worse. It’s a , erm, rainforest out there.

  58. jupes

    That’s lefty talk!

Ease up Fleeced. I feel proud of Australia when the cricket team kicks Pommy arse but I have nothing to do with that.

Sure it’s only the decision of a committee but it is done on our behalf. We have a so-called conservative government in NSW who named him as the NSW Australian of the year and now we have a so-called conservative government in Canberra who will no doubt praise Goodes as a worthy anti-racist activist or whatever.

Consider what they have just done. They have named a man as the most laudable citizen in the country because he picked on a 13 year old girl. Shameful doesn’t even begin to describe it.

  59. I will stay anonymous on this one - because I fear the Left and the power of Google searches

Adam Goodes is a good Aussie Rules player (a domestic sport only passionately followed in two or three Australia states) and a founder of Goodes-O’Loughlin Foundation to help indigenous youngsters. But the football will mean nothing in a few years, and the small Foundation, if it lasts, won’t change much in a crowded marketplace for aboriginal assistance.
    .
    1) No, he did not get elected, serve his time, become a minister and make a difference
    2) No, he did not join the public service or a NGO, work hard and long, and reach a level of importance to such that he is consulted in national debates
    3) No, he did not volunteer his spare time (the most precious gift of all) and helped everyday Australians overcome hardship – at a later time he may help a segment of Australian society that he identifies with – Aboriginal youth interested in footy.
    4) No, he did not serve his country in times of war and risk his life for Australia
    5) No, he did make a significant mark in science, medicine or literature.
    6) No,….
    .
    The selection criteria are:

    Demonstrated excellence in their field
Significant contribution to the Australian community and nation
An inspirational role model for the Australian community

what a racist gang of commentators

  61. John

Even though I’m in the strong minority of people on here who don’t really have a problem with Adam Goodes being named Australian of the Year, I still think, by most objective measures, all of the other nominees were more deserving of the title than Goodes. Setting aside the fallacy that Goodes won because of one incident on the football field that so many on here are wilfully clinging onto, I’m guessing one of the reasons he won over others whose work is arguably of greater practical value is the “cut through” ability he possesses as a well known sports star.

Amazing woman who will continue to improve this country immensely. She has copped horrendous abuse for being married to a White man, even though the majority of indigenous people are in mixed marriages. But for the Left, racial insults are acceptable in a good cause.

  77. Fisky

It would have been a lot bloody sadder for them if the country had been settled by the other Imperial powers such as the French, Spanish, Dutch or Portugal. Just have a look at how their colonies got on.

Indigenous people did get a raw deal largely because they were never a united nation in a position to sign a treaty with the British. Still, you have to wonder what Goodes is thinking – if it wasn’t the British in 1788, it was someone else within a couple of decades.

  78. jupes

  82. Anthony of QLD

I’m becoming very cynical about this award and the way it appears to have become the play thing of an unrepresentative elite who want to use it to educate us supposedly less enlightened beings. While some of the nominees this year were clearly doing worthy work, I suspect they are also all well recompensed for it. In contrast, I personally know quite a few people whose selfless work in the community receives no reward other than the satisfaction they receive in helping people. There must be tens of thousands of such people across the nation. Why can’t that sort of person be A ot Y (if we must have it)? Having said that, I hope Adam Goodes, whose reaction to the girl’s taunt was quite immature itself, will develop in character through carrying out this role.

  83. Mindfree

Armadillo – Abbott endorses these selections and yes I agree if he intervened the ALPBC and fauxfacts would be screaming racist and getting the ire of Swan supporters – So what – Abbott is trying to engage with those who will never ever accept him.
The point is Goodes should have never been selected on the basis of that incident. This only will inflame the divide between indigenous and non-indigenous. A really poor decision and one Abbott endorsed

He’s done more for Aborigines than Adam Goodes.

  94. Armadillo

The point is Goodes should have never been selected on the basis of that incident. This only will inflame the divide between indigenous and non-indigenous. A really poor decision and one Abbott endorsed

No disagreement there, the point is he had no choice but to endorse it. There is probably a lesson in this – make it a decision entirely for the committee (actually, I’m not even sure that is not the case). It’s not like he’s selecting the PM’s first 11 cricket team here. The left are not unknown for setting traps (what if they selected TLS for her speech)? Besides, why should a PM be involved in the decision – it should be up to ordinary Australians (or in this case a group of their peers).

No argument there – its a question of what the A of the Y has now become. As it has become a plaything of the left, (like the Nobell) is it of any value?

  103. Walter

To all those attacking Adam Goodes – perhaps you’d like to list your contribution to Australia?

How many of you can write in here and say what you’ve done?

I am not trying to defend or support Goodes at all, but the accusations made that the police basically falsely imprisoned the girl and acted in a brutal fashion due effectively to political correctness are unproven and unfair. Goodes’ action incited an ugly reaction from the crowd, and Goodes and the crowd were responsible for what came next, not the girl and not Vicpol.

The biggest wank is that there even is an Australian of The Year. Who came up with that malarkey? Fraser or Whitlam probably.

Countries who are comfortable in their own skin just eat some food, have a drink, root the missus and go to bed on the country’s anniversary.

However, Goodes is an outstanding choice who accurately reflects modern Australia’s psyche.

  116. Mk50 of Brisbane, Henchman to the VRWC

Yes, I am a doctor specializing in resuscitation so probably have saved several hundred at least, possibly over a thousand. Yes, been and am a role model, no this is not my real name but I don’t like to brag if identifiable and am happy for footballers with big muscles to receive this stupid award. Why is the best Australian always someone famous anyway?

  118. mmxx

Stick with your strength of keeping wicket within the history of Australian cricket, Adam.

This politically-charged fiasco avoids objectivity . The award is now meaningless to most ordinary Australian families.

It has been turned into a gifted free-kick for a politically correct minority.

To follow your logic path, it is unlikely for there to be an Australian of Anglo-Celtic heritage to be recognised as Australian of the Year in future.

To arrive at Australia Day ‘s recognition through honorific award, there must be a reason to fashionably blame progeny of 18th century British “invaders” as well as contemporary opposition of would-be unlawful boat landers.

  119. Demosthenes

    That is defamatory filth

Probably, but then so much of Catallaxian commentary is, it’s hardly out of the ordinary.

  120. C.L.

Throughout Australia in the last year, not one street worker, nurse, ambulance officer, war-weary commando or just plain Mum or Dad working their arses off for love of their children … not one such person eclipsed Adam Goode as an exemplar of all that is great in this country. Is that right? No, sir. I’ll tell you what we have here. We have white leftists weaponising a black man to attack the people they hate. I’m betting they couldn’t find a viable homosexual. This is one of the most grotesque exercises in systematic racism imaginable.

  121. Habib

Adam Goodes, Australia Day is a time of mourning: ‘It’s a very sad day for a lot of our mob.’

Understandable Adam. Without the white invasion I’m sure you’d have achieved a lot more than being a multi-millionaire, mansion dwelling, 2 time Brownow, 2 time Premiership, Australian Of The Year.

  125. Armadillo

    Quite so.

  134. Infidel Tiger

  135. Armadillo

The only reason i can suggest, for you bringing this up, is because HE WON the award. It’s meaningless.

The criteria for the award is the key. People that should be in consideration are people we do not know about.

Now that is something when the modern form of Luddism is AGW and its fundamental assumption that the climate is perpetually static unless interfered with by humans. The left and progressives embrace AGW. At heart being an AGW believer is wanting to return to the womb with a feeder in the mouth and a crank in the arse. In short your thesis needs work Walter or at least a switch of application to the left.

  156. Mk50 of Brisbane, Henchman to the VRWC

Demosthenes – ‘squealpansy’ is a colourful term which can be used as a synonym for:
    1. an hysterical lefty (BIRM)
    2. anyone who has conducted the sort of action which labels them as a real dick (like a multi-millionaire six foot AFL oaf who takes squealing offence at a 13 year old daughter of a single mum and calls in the police to deal with her in public, in front of the cameras, which is apparently what happened in this case according to what I currently understand)

  157. Mindfree

Well just tell Adam that the trappings of British colonization had absolutely nothing to do with his ability to rise in a sport started by ..oh that’s right white colonists and that the standard of living he aspires to has nothing to do with the capitalist economic system building this country over the last 200 years and he will probably say …well I don’t know what he actually will say in response but that line of argument will certainly go counter to his comment of Australia Day.

Honestly the guy has done good work for the indigenous community but his comment on Oz ay are an indication of how he appreciates the factors that have given him the opportunity to rise in his chosen field

If that is racist according to the trolls who have infested this thread then I stand by it. Suck it up

    Australia Day 2014…
    * Desecration of historical place. (James Cook’s Cottage)
    * Reward victimhood mentality. (Goodes gets Australian of the Year for “fighting racism”.)

…Naturally, Goodes is all for “Equality”.

ie: Treat people as divided sub-groups of political identities as defined by the political Left.
Goodes => ”everyone is treated as equals, through race, religion, sexuality and gender”.

    * A 13 yr old bogan white girl is racist.
    * Eddie McGuire is given a pass for his King Kong remark.
=> Rich/Celeb appeasing white man given a pass. But poor, bogan white girl gets crucified and bullied.

Left characteristic highlight? => The standard of the double standard.
…One rule for those who have money. Another rule for those who don’t. (We don’t hear of Eddie McGuire being dragged off by the Victorian Police for 2 hours.)

Australian of the Year and Noble Peace Prize…They fall in the same categories of uselessness.
(They don’t actually do anything but make someone feel good…The Left’s common theme of back-patting and collective feel-good circle jerking. Its like the adult world version of the infamous “Participation Award” I used to get in school.)

  169. Mick Gold Coast QLD

    The candidates:
John Caldwell – 36 yo, successful businessman, three international recruitment companies, campaigns to combat bullying
Shellie Morris – singer and health campaigner
Goodes – plenty to not say about bullying of vulnerable infant girls in Aurukun and Wadeye
Zsuzsoka Kecskes – famous neonatal doctor, German
Professor Thomas McMeekin – scientist, maths formulas and models to predict potential problems, whether it’s determining the shelf life of yoghurt or ideal temperatures for meat when it’s exported around the world, Irish
Li Cunxin – artistic director at Queensland Ballet, the Chinese Mao’s Dancer fella
Professor Bruce Robinson – cancer specialist, educational mentoring program around the role of fathers and father figures
Felicity-ann Lewis – teaches the teachers at Flinders University and local mayor … aaaaargghhh! Must moonlight as a local general practitioner because she refers to one as Dr.

    The Council:
Shelley Reys – specialist, strategist and service provider (yes, I understand, no)
Adam Gilchrist – was an exceptional cricketer, now a token male pushover chairman keeping the meeting minutes
Robbie Sefton – a she, strategic communicator (whatever that is)
Janet Whiting – Corrs slolicitors, new old Melbourne money it seems
Samina Yasmeen – a Paki, professional muslim, specialist in political and strategic development in South Asia (whatever that is)
Elizabeth Kelly – PM’s Department, 20 year public servant
Carol Schwartz – serious old Melbourne money
Tim Soutphommasane – one of Gillian Triggs’ hooooman rights commissioners, Monash Uni political philosopher. Laotian. Must moonlight as a local general practitioner because he is referred to as Dr Tim.
Professor Ian Frazer – high end medical specialist and researcher, a Scot.
Jason Glanville – CEO of a centre of excellence

That’s three specialist strategists. Do any of ’em have a day job? Carrying bed pans in hospitals and paying membership fees to the Health Services Union, for example?

    But wait – I see:

    Candidates:
    Morris – aborigine
    Goodes – aborigine sook
Robinson – mentoring program … particularly Aboriginal youths
Lewis – fundraise for the country’s first war memorial dedicated to Aboriginal …
    Councillors:
    Reys – aborigine
Sefton – G’lardarsks advisor on isssssues affecting wymminses in regional, rural and remote Australia. That wouldn’t be to do with the Country Womens Association ladies, no.
    Glanville – aborigine

I’m getting close to the 65+ers, born here (ie. clearly racistly), 15% of the population, and I don’t see me represented there.

Other places have been changed forever after being bombed or occupied by outsiders, some survived and prospered after the invaders discovered fighting people on their homelands is just too difficult. I’ve seen the regard held for my wife’s father and his mates, who moved their families into the jungle and crept down in the darkness to quietly slit Japanese throats, year after year until they got sick of it and left.

We have no such history or the knowledge or alertness that comes with it.

The invaders in Australia are invisible to those who are not looking, they come from within.

  204. A Lurker

Walter: Pity Aboriginal people didn’t have a decent artillery when those illegal boats full of criminals arrived in 1788.

For the Aboriginal people to have decent artillery they would have had to achieve the following:

Discover that natural clays can be hand-formed and cooked hard in fire to create pottery.
Discovered how to cultivate plants and grow crops.
Created stable ongoing communities in one location – i.e. constructed villages, towns and cities.
Understood the need for defence, initially building forts cut into hills, then fortified wooden enclosures, then stone castles.
    Discover the wheel.
Experience their very own copper, bronze and iron ages.
Discover and understand the use of melting metal under high temperatures initially in kilns, and then later in forges, and then forging it into useful shapes and understanding how to cast shapes.
Discover and understand the use for combustible minerals.
Combining cast metals, combustive minerals, and a projectile together to make a cannon.

Or at the very least they could have made these – which doesn’t require metal.

The fact that they did not achieve any of the above, and never progressed beyond Palaeolithic technology, is why a technologically advanced but small group of people were able to claim Australia virtually unopposed.

And if it were not the British, then it would have been someone else.

    Happy Australia Day!

  205. Abu Chowdah

Well done Sir, you are a glowing example of an angry racist…enjoy the bitter aftertaste.

Goodes was a pc choice, nothing more, nothing less. Athlete, well known, black, heroically stood up and over a 13 year old girl. Damn, I can imagine if a white athlete did that to a black 13 year old girl who called him a name interpreted as racist.

  208. A Lurker

I think out of all the advances in civilization that the Aborigines failed to achieve, the ones that I simply cannot understand are the failures to make pottery, to domesticate animals, and to cultivate/plant crops.

Why did they not think about cultivating crops of suitable bush tucker foods? Why did they not think about trapping and attempting to domesticate marsupials? Why did they not achieve the imaginative leap of turning raw clay into pots?

Or at the very least, why did they not construct suitable ocean going craft to trade with people from Asia, and become exposed to civilization advances like growing rice.

After all humans had been inhabiting the continent now known as Australia for nigh on 50,000 years so it’s not like they didn’t have much time to get their act together. In 50,000 years humans in Europe went from coming out of the Ice-age and making amazing figurines like this, to modern Industry and Empires.

Most selections over the years have been controversial to some extent. We all have our views, and have every right to express them. There is a defined nomination process, and I am sure the panel does select the best person they can. Not all will have to agree with their selection, but that’s how things happen in our country where the system is much better than most other countries i would have thought.
About the comment from Phillipa – it is hard to know who spryaed Cook’s cottage, but one thing is true – they are senseless idiots. What they have done is wrong, and let’s not tell anyone to do this, out of disgust or anger. Enjoy the day, it is a significant milestone in the history of this young nation.

  214. Perfidious Albino

I don’t believe Tony had any real option other than to be gracious in his participation this time around. However, the NADC is clearly stacked with ‘progressive’ folk – yet another institution requiring a re-balance. Goodes was a divisive rather than unifying choice, but in the context of our contemporary tribalism, it’s probably close to impossible to be otherwise. That cyclist chap from Le Tour who won the yellow jersey and then gave way to his teammate on the next stage would have been a good exemplar to my mind, FWIW.

  215. feelthebern

I usually grind my teeth when Australian of the year is announced.
But I reckon Adam Goodes is a good choice by the judges.
This has to be viewed through the lens of what this person will do over the next 12 months.
Goodes will be a good role model for all indigenous youth.
Ita, Mckeon, etc what did they ever do with their 12 months as Australian of the year? Nothing.
Goodes, by his actions, can be a role model for kids are sabotaged by their communities via booze & abuse.

  216. Johno

I don’t know if anyone else has spotted this, but the Australian Day Council isn’t the only people to make Goodes their Australian of the Year.

The Oz has selected him as one of five they chose as their Australians of the Year. All five were selected for their work in helping aboriginal people. Four were aboriginal – Noël Pearson, Warren Mundine and Marcia Langton. The fifth was Andrew Forrest.

If Tony Abbott really wanted to use the Australian of the Year to promote his proposed racist amendment to the Constitution, then any of the other people chosen by The Oz would have been better.

Maybe he is playing the Left at their own game. 🙂

    But I doubt it.

    Malcolm Fraser is being resurrected.

  217. Mike of Marion

    feelthebern,

I suspect you could also look at another way – by naming Goodes, he from now on has to be careful what he says and does because he’ll be commented upon from all sides.

  218. james

Gilchrist foreshadowed this choice during his big bash commentary.

Naming a multimillionaire bully who enjoys picking on little girls Australian of the year shows just how little credibility that award has.

  219. whyisitso

Goodes, by his actions, can be a role model for kids are sabotaged by their communities via booze & abuse.

Yes he can be an excellent role model for bullying children.

  220. Bruce of Newcastle

I think out of all the advances in civilization that the Aborigines failed to achieve, the ones that I simply cannot understand are the failures to make pottery, to domesticate animals, and to cultivate/plant crops.

Lurker – The problem is there were no domesticable native animals or plants, with possible exception of some melons and tubers.

This is an area of interest to the people investigating how civilisation commenced. It started in the locations where people had access to easily domesticated animals and plants – goats, wheat, sheep etc. The Middle East is most blest by such species. North America had many too, but no riding animals. Even PNG natives was able to domesticate some species – none of which made it to Oz – no pigs, taro or sweet potatoes. The local aboriginals had no really useful species at all. You can’t herd or confine kangaroos. Even the dingoes came over with Indonesian sailors a few thousand years ago.

It may be that some of the megafauna could have been domesticable, but that was 30,000 years ago and humans just hadn’t learned enough by then. After they were all gone there was no second chance.

  221. Bruce of Newcastle

And nomads don’t make pots. Too heavy to carry around.

  222. james

    To Reggie above.

Until this I would have called Gilchrist sir as well.

After this choice I would indeed get up in his face. In fact I would resist the urge to spit in it.

As for goodes nothing I could say to him would hurt him more than mentioning just how Damn ugly his mother is. If he chose to go “ape shit” on me after that I would very much enjoy suing the pants off him and spending his money.

After all money is a whitefella thing, I can only be helping his cultural spirituality by taking it off him and returning him to a state of nature.

  223. james

Bruce there was trade between Indonesia and northern Australia. Ancient Indonesians managed to colonize Madagascar. The Polynesian settled every speck of dirt in the pacific. There would have been much contact between aboriginals and outsiders, yet in all that time they never adopted the simplest of technologies from these other, more advanced peoples.

    Rich pickings here.
The most noteworthy aspect is the gradual progression from comments personally insulting to Goodes because of his race to generalizing about the alleged primitive state of the indigenous inhabitants and the blatant stereotyping that accompanies it.

Not quite appropriate; Madam is however given her overseeing of Thomson and her own proclivities.

Aboriginal culture has been reinterpreted by Gammage whose thesis is that aboriginal society shaped a more benevolent environment than Western civilization. This takes the Noble Savage concept to its zenith. I disagree with this; I think aboriginal society was entirely determined by nature and their limited technology may have had an impact through persistent fire-stick farming, which in itself is an oxymoron, but any change to the environment by such ‘farming’ was not intended. Numbers – We’ve said we’d love to see Bess Price given Australian of the Year. No one has disagreed with that on this thread. I hope you will point this out to your colleagues.

Likewise I think Noel Pearson deserves it for long service for his people and for all Australians.

You cannot have it both ways. If we are saying two aboriginal people are worthy recipients and one is less worthy, based on that person’s character and actions, how can that be racist?
