Don Farrell, the Godfather of the SA Labor Party, has a strong powerbase even though he has personally achieved little.
Starting as the South Australian Secretary and National President of the Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees Association Union he was selected to the Labor Senate ticket in the 2007 election sweeping to office under the coattails of Kevin Rudd. Labor’s former deputy leader, Ralph Clarke said
He controls the pre-selection directly or indirectly of every MP in South Australia. If you want to get on, you get on with Don.
Betraying Rudd, he was one of the faceless men that deposed the then Prime Minister in 2010. He then betrayed Gillard in 2013.
He was second to Penny Wong on the SA Labor Senate list in the 2013 election. He will complete his Senate ‘service’ on 30 June 2014.
Always looking for opportunities to suck at the public teat, Don approached SA Finance Minister, Michael O’Brien, and persuaded him to vacate his seat for the Don. O’Brien agreed but neglected to tell the Premier, Jay Weatherill.
Weatherill was able to scuttle the deal, mainly because only six weeks remained to the SA election.
But the Don isn’t finished yet. He is sharpening his knife ready for 15 March 2014 when Steven Marshall’s Liberals are elected. Then the Don will swoop, take his revenge on Weatherill and secure his place as SA Opposition Leader following a by-election for the seat of Cheltenham.
