Piers Akerman sacked from ABC

THE ABC has struck off one of its longest-serving political commentators on the Insiders program following a review of remarks made during the federal election about former prime minister Julia Gillard’s partner,

News Corp Australia commentator Piers Akerman was not informed of the review or given a right of reply.

He has appeared on the program just once since the Mathieson incident despite having contributed to Insiders for more than a decade.

It has emerged in an email sent to a member of the public by the ABC that the public broadcaster undertook a review of the broadcast on Sunday, June 16, 2013, which concluded that the comments made by Akerman were “inappropriate”.

I guess he should have brought a drawing of Stedman in flagrante delicto with a dog.

Then it would have been OK.

The Right should unilaterally embargo those scumbags.

They can also create all sorts of problems for them… Undertake they will appear on one of their programs and then do a no show without notice and say they forgot or the traffic was too heavy.

    Just really fuck them up.

No rightie should appear on their Q&A this evening.

  3. Robbo

But they remain happy to have that foul mouthed slag Deveney on air.

    Tonight’s Q&A Panel
Malcolm Turnbull – Minister for Communications
    Mark Dreyfus – Shadow Attorney-General
    Dave Hughes – Comedian
Yolanda Vega – CEO of Australian Women Chamber of Commerce & Industry
Janet Albrechtsen – Opinion columnist for The Australian

Turnbull rocking up tonight on Q&A.

  6. Token

Can we juxtapose Bawwie & Marr + other when the unsubstantiated rumours of “The Punch” were discussed, just so we can see how pure that lot are?

  7. Token

    Dave Hughes – Comedian

You lie, he is a humourist, no comedy involved.

  8. twostix

The left think they can play tit-for-tat. Abbott announces an enquiry into ABC bias…so they dump one of the couple of remaining conservatives for saying something about a Labor PM.

Which leads to the question that perhaps the left want the ABC shutdown? How else to explain such extraordinarily stupid behavior? Or, are they simply in their death throws, impotently lashing out, so pathetic and in such a political rout, that the likes of Piers Akerman is the only person that they can hurt anymore.

  9. At the end of that show, I seem to recall, Barrie Cassidy made Piers Akerman apologise for having dared to mention, no matter how obliquely, that Canberra’s lordotic Court Eunuchs had been joking about Ms Gillard’s beard for years.

  10. JC

Lol oh yea, if Piers had shown Stefan humping a dog everything would have been cool.

I’m with you, J.C. Do them over.

I learnt a new phrase last year- BDS- boycott, divest and sanctions. Seems an o.k. plan.

  12. sabrina

Does anyone know if the Insiders panelists are paid and if yes, how much.

  13. JC

    So deadman,

The despicable ol leatherface made him apologize and then axed him. What a fucking scumbag.

I’m guessing leatherface was worried he wouldn’t get free tickets to sporting events Stedman have supplied him.

The Right should unilaterally embargo those scumbags.

Gerard Henderson must be allowed to go on as he is so methodical he screws with their brains.

Piers was too sloppy and too often let himself be pidgeonholed by the couch collective so it is best on reflection if he does not appear.

  17. feelthebern

    Who is the 0.5?

    C’mon guys.
    Turnbull is a 0.5.
You guys make him out to be further to the left than SHY.

  18. feelthebern

Whenever the ALP had a shocking, shocking week, Insiders would always get Piers on.
Piers came across as a bloviated, pompous git.
I’m for substance over style, but Piers is the cliché conservative from central casting.

    Need more Gerard.
Cant wait for the rich kids Olympics to be over so Bolta can be back on.

  19. Baldrick

The replacement for the ‘token’ conservative on Insiders will be interesting, or perhaps they could just give David Marr more air-time!

  20. Gab

Imagine if the story had been about Abbott’s marriage. There’s be no Sattler or Ackerman sackings at all.

That edition of Insiders was aired in June 2013, a review occurred in June 2013 and some eight months later Ackerman is sacked when the story is now a non-issue.

This story will now be discussed ad nauesum by the howling luvvie talking heads at their ABC like the incident occurred yesterday and hundreds of volumes in print and pixels will be written about it in NoFacts publications for the next week.

Their ABC has yet again set the media agenda for the week.

ABC’s treasonous reporting of the Navy torturing asylum seekers. Distraction much?

  21. Wellll, we shall see.

Will he do his ‘Kindly Uncle Malcolm’ act with them tonight, in the light of his recent comments about the need for review? (75% likely, with a hint of twinkling eye and kind-but-firm demeanour)

Will he be eaten alive by the hostile audience and make an embarrassing public back-track? (50-60% likely, with a look of surprised yet dignified hurt)

Will he leap up on to the table and do the Pony? (0% likely, unless someone puts something in his drink in the green room beforehand)

  22. twostix

At the end of that show, I seem to recall, Barrie Cassidy made Piers Akerman apologise for having dared to mention, no matter how obliquely, that Canberra’s lordotic Court Eunuchs had been joking about Ms Gillard’s beard for years.

The ALP were so concerned about Gillard’s no-children, partner-less situation coming up to the 2007 election that that made her get a boyfriend. The best they could come up with was a “flamboyant” hairdresser / hair product salesman.

  23. Leo G

Piers dismissal: a flavour of political disfavour.
    Payback or hypocrisy?

  24. Who is the big winner commercially if the ABC is shut down?

Anyone noticed any changes in the wind at Fairfax lately? Notable support for union busting royal commissions?

    Be interesting to watch.

It just tells us the ratings has been appalling so they are trying to drum up the leftard by putting the head of a conservative on a pike at the city gates.

    Its all PR.

  27. nic

Piers was too sloppy and too often let himself be pidgeonholed by the couch collective so it is best on reflection if he does not appear.

He writes far better than he speaks. That said, it was a gotcha moment. He never raised the issue, Cassidy did.

  28. twostix

The despicable ol leatherface made him apologize and then axed him. What a fucking scumbag.

    He’s gutless.

He should have called out Cassidy for his bias, his vested interest and his personal relationship including the acceptance of many gifts from the PM’s boyfriend.

Instead the wimp bowed down and look what happened.

Never, ever, ever apologise to the left. Ever.

  29. feelthebern

    Don’t the ABC get it?
No one wants to see everyone sitting around agreeing with each other.
    Communal circle jerks are boring.
PM Live has a decent debate most nights.
That said, I see the cliché Dee Madigan was on last night.
Luckily I missed that due to watching The Dark Knight Rises.

Piers came across as a bloviated, pompous git.
I’m for substance over style, but Piers is the cliché conservative from central casting.

I agree. It was too easy to bog him down with semantics and trivia. Gerard doesn’t fall for that crap.

  31. Ant

Insiders hit the skids from the moment AB left, and has become unwatchable since.

Gerard on Insiders is OK, but his judgement had to be questioned when he more than once tried to claim that Wayne Swan was doing a “pretty good job.”

  32. twostix

He writes far better than he speaks. That said, it was a gotcha moment. He never raised the issue, Cassidy did.

Exactly, he simply said that people in the Press Gallery and ALP and Liberals have been saying, or have known since 2006.

He’s stupid for falling into such an obvious trap. When it became obvious what they were doing he should have threatened to name names. Then upped the anti by hinting that they were well known leftist journalists. That would have shut Cassidy up post-haste. Then if necessary he could have gone nuclear on Cassidy and called out his vested interest in the relationship thanks to all of the gifts he receives from Tim.

Old crotchety conservatives really need to get into the game on this sort of stuff.

  33. Token

Will he do his ‘Kindly Uncle Malcolm’ act with them tonight, in the light of his recent comments about the need for review?

    We know the drill.

Snow Cone will have ABC staff pretending to be members of the public where they try to get Malcolm to confirm he will not allow any cuts to the ABC.

Of course we won’t see former lawyer Malcolm when it happens, oh no, he’ll allow an “over my dead body” type comment pass his lips.

  47. Luke

And yet Karen Brooks has an opinion on News.com.au claiming that there is no bias at the ABC and that the Prime Minister claiming that there is is just him living in his own fantasy.

“Who needs Facts? We have feelings.”

She claims the Prime Minister has no basis for claiming there is bias at the ABC yet, oddly enough, provides no facts of her own to counter the claim. I guess it’s just the usual “my feelings reflect reality but your feelings are just your feelings…and wrong”. Wonderful own goal there Karen!

Don’t embargo! Go on there and bring this up at EVERY OPPORTUNITY, eg. constantly throughout, regardless of the actual topic being discussed.

And talk over Snowcone. Constantly. In fact, interrupt him. It’s all he deserves.

  56. twostix

And yet Karen Brooks has an opinion on News.com.au claiming that there is no bias at the ABC

Yes yes, it’s a mere coincidence that nearly every.single.one of the ABC’s political reporters have direct links past or present to the ALP.

    Kerry O’brien: ALP PM advisor.
    Barry Cassidy: ALP PM Advisor.
Chis Ulhmann: Married to a sitting ALP MP
    Maxine Mckew: ALP MP
Juanita Phillips: Partner of a sitting ALP Minister.

  72. feelthebern

The perp has grown up into an ALP staffer for a Minister..according to SHY.

Ok. This is the ideal forum to at least put a list together of suspects.
    1) Get list of current members of the House of Reps & Senate;
    2) Put line through all non ALP members;
    3) Put line through all non ministers (of previous governments);
    4) Distill list;
    5) Go through all those who remain websites to see staff names (might be a FOI function);
    6) See who which of those staff went to Uni in Adelaide.

Given the stats on traffic for the web site (from the annual report), there would be more than a few eager beavers that would lap this kind of thing up.

    Outcome:
    1) This claim is hog shit & SHY should be called on it;
    2) This claim is true & I demand justice for SHY.

More importantly, given the eye balls on this thread every day, it would get back to the perp (if it happened) that the Cat is onto them.
That could be fun in itself.

    Exactly.

  76. Brad

Akerman rightly got the ass. He repeated a highly defamatory allegation on the public broadcaster which could have cost the broadcaster and therefore the taxpayer a substantial amount of money in defamation proceeedings if the PM had chosen to pursue such, and then to top it off when he was invited back onto the show some 3 months later after the federal election on his very first time back on he goes and defames Chris Bowen and the ABC has to issue an apology.

That episode of the Insiders should have been re-named Enough Rope – if Cassidy was so concerned about what Akerman was saying, Akerman should have been cut off well before he had concluded – it was obvious where he was going. A “moving right along” from Cassidy, after Taylor’s denial, would have done it. Instead Cassidy waited till Akerman had said his piece, and then, in a tone which reminded me of a kid who’s fond of saying “I’m telling on you” he pounces, sounding almost personally wounded in the process (which may, in fact, be quite telling, when you think about it).

The delay in dealing with this doesn’t greatly surprise me (if anything, it’s probably been expedited…..) and while it’s easy to see this as payback and/or another instance of “come and get us” or “we’re going down fighting”, it’s more likely a reflection of where the heads of the ABC reviewers and decision makers are. I think Akerman was simply trying to inject a bit of balance and perspective into what had become a righteous frenzy, and this is the belated outcome – no surprises, really.

I agree with JMH (2.24pm) – Nick Cater would be a good replacement – he might even manage to nudge the discussion in the direction of policy, and get beyond the usual lefty/luvvy slogans and shibboleths. Insiders might be worth watching, occasionally.

  90. JC

Oh, that’s a catchy title. Good work JC.

Frankly I don’t believe her. I don’t believe anything the human trash says.

This is why the Stenographers are running dead.

    Either:

    1. SHY has revealed a criminal assault much worse than the fabricated punch (too many people die or are permanently injured from falls down stairs), or

    2. She has made a serious claim of criminality in a way which if pursued with the vigour the fabricated punch was would end her career.

  95. nic

The show should be called ‘disclosure’ owing to having to disclose possible conflicts of interest in their discussion topics. It would take up half the show, which makes me think, why don’t they disclose such? Surely in fairness to the panel on that day, Cassidy should have stated “I need to disclose that the person concerned was a mate with whom I went to the footy with and may or may not have had to pay for the seats in question, visit the rooms , etc”

  96. JC

I’m sure ol’leatherface was breaking the rules taking those gifts from stedders.

If I have time I may shoot off an email to ABC comaplaints department. They won’t do anything about it of course, but scrotum face will hear about the complaint and may upset him.

If you can’t get them fired, just upset them through mocking and other stuff as they hate it.

  97. Token

From the sounds of it Cassidy was a “mate” to Tim as Tim was a “partner” to Gillard.

Leaving any tawdry innuendo, the fact is he should have declared that personal interest and any financial gain he made as a result every time there was a discussion about Tim.

Does anyone have evidence leatherface was botting off steddman? Of course, my hunch is the he did, but is there any evidence at all as I’d love to include it in my complaint.

Can you imagine… Stedders and ol’leatheface are friends. Fme that’s disgusting.

  100. Fleeced

I guess he should have brought a drawing of Stedman in flagrante delicto with a dog.

Indeed. I can’t believe people can sit there with a straight face and say the ABC isn’t biased.

Here’s part of what he said (emphasis mine):

I thought it was probably the most stupid thing that I’ve ever heard on public broadcasting. But I wondered why is being homosexual in 2013 such an issue?

Seems his greatest sin was trying to use their own PC arguments against them… they hate that!

  101. twostix

Leaving any tawdry innuendo, the fact is he should have declared that personal interest and any financial gain he made as a result every time there was a discussion about Tim.

I meant the line of perks and freebies. As we all know Tim certainly lived the highlife thanks to his association with Gillard, Cassidy enjoyed the benefits of that too.

  102. twostix

Twostix, are you saying leatherface was tea-bagging the hairdresser?

No. I meant there were many perks to being associated with Tim thanks to Tim being associated with Gillard. We all remember the stories, the man was miling it for all he was worth. Cassidy enjoyed many of those perks, he should have declared his self-interest on any matter pertaining to Gillard.

  103. Fleeced

The Right should unilaterally embargo those scumbags.

Alas, if the top level Libs avoided the ABC, the low-level wannabes in the Libs would fill the void the raise their profile (and the ABC would happily use them)… but they’ll always have Turnbull.

  104. Lloyd

Ackerman is a better writer than he is a talking head.

  105. JC

Seems his greatest sin was trying to use their own PC arguments against them… they hate that!

They also found it hard to live with the fact stedders was cutting ladies hair. What a fucking debauchery that Lodge was.

  106. whyisitso

You guys make him out to be further to the left than SHY.

They’re peas in a pod. At least SHY is honest enough to be in a party consistent with her ideology, unlike Turnbull. There used to be a useful term decades ago – “fifth columnist”.

  107. JC

Twostix, are you saying leatherface was tea-bagging the hairdresser?

Please, no vivid imaginations here at the Cat. Let’s just stick to the facts. The thought is too horrible to even contemplate.

  108. Stephen of Glasshouse

Here’s the link to the SHY’s stair incident.

  109. feelthebern

Apart from Media Watch, I don’t watch the ABC.
Insiders used to be watch periodically.
Haven’t watched Q&A for a couple of years.
    Can I get a refund?

  110. Makka

I hope PA blows the whistle fully on the Leftscum goings on at the ABC now he is no longer part of it. I’m sure there are lots of anecdotes and and issues he could shine a light on that would interest those who are now becoming very concerned about the feral ALPBC’s spreading of the Left virus at Taxpayer expense. Timely it would be too. Over to you , Piers?

Who will they replace him with. I hope we see a lot more of Albrechtson. Or even Grace Collier? Both photogenic and the appropriate political views to replace Piers. If such a replacement doesn’t occur then here again , more evidence the ALPBC is bias and not complying with it’s charter.

  111. JC

Thanks for the link describing The Trip incident. I don’t believe her. She reckons she fell down the stairs and ended up with bloody knees.

Bullshit. If you fall down stairs you either hurt arms…elbows etc…and head. You don’t fall down stairs and bloody your knees.

    She’s lying.

  112. feelthebern

    The Trip.
    What will David Marr do?
I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for him to write about it.
He’s recently written about Abbott, Pell, so I imagine he’s about to write another glowing piece on Bill Henson.

  113. JC

You know, when it think about, their ABC is hanging by the fucking thread. All they have is Turnbull’s support in cabinet. If he turns around and says he’s lost confidence in them they’re fucked. They’re gone for all money.

And Turnbull is a political animal and could be playing a game here. He would gain a lot of party support if he turned on them and led a charge against their ABC.

They ought to be shitting themselves.

  114. JC

Was Piers supportive of Turnbull? Anyone know?

  115. Snoopy

I think it’s pretty clear that she landed on her head at some time.

  116. Stephen of Glasshouse

The ABC did ” The Slap” ; ” The Trip” would be no biggie..

  117. feelthebern

    The ABC has fucked themselves.
They could have been a pest to Tony for 6-9 years, fighting a guerilla war.
But they went too hard too soon with Snowden & boat people.
It would have been so hard to give Tony the cover to re-structure that place.
But the ABC have done it to themselves.
Real Student Representative council kind of stuff.

  118. .

What a joke. Nothing more can or needs to be said.

    Shut them down.

    Fire them all.

  119. JC

And take away all their benefits too, Dot.

Send the fuckers out on the street without a fucking cent. I wouldn’t even spare the fucking camera lackey either. It’s an equality thing. :-)

    Piers Ackerman.
“The next time some Green-tinged over-educated idiot starts arguing for a Turnbull leadership, pull Switzer’s piece out and let the facts speak for themselves”.

  124. feelthebern

Apart from Paul Barry, name a single ABC journo who would be employed on the same pay at another domestic network.

  125. Oops. apologies to all – apart from JC, of course – wrong thread. Wrong thread. Was wrongfooted by ‘Piers’. Akerman, not Morgan, obviously.
(Don’t worry Dot. You’ll bury the MUnteds on Wednesday. Or, to put it another way, please bury the MUnteds on Wednesday night.)

  126. JC

Oh… So Piers and Malcolm are bet friends.

No matter… If Turnbull wants to have a serious tilt at the leadership he couldn’t go too far wrong going after their ABC and burning some flesh.

  127. Token

They could have been a pest to Tony for 6-9 years, fighting a guerilla war.
But they went too hard too soon with Snowden & boat people.

I think TA and crew have been suspecting the ALPBC is trying to set them up with Leatherface, the Shirt Strainer & LeSnore did to Piers. Fact is the place is out of control and the morons think they can get away with acting like the US media.

  128. Token

Don’t worry Shoss, Liverpool & Arsenel will find a way to screw up and give the title on a platter to Man City or the Special One.

  129. Aaron

I wrote to the ABC regarding Cassidy’s intimate friendship with Mathieson but received no reply. I queried why Virginia Trioli and Michael Rowland expect their guests to declare their political or organisational affiliations in the morning but Cassidy did not need to reveal on the ABC before every episode of Insiders that he received financial inducements and gifts from the Prime Minister’s partner.

  130. Andore Jr.

You know, when it think about, their ABC is hanging by the fucking thread. All they have is Turnbull’s support in cabinet. If he turns around and says he’s lost confidence in them they’re fucked. They’re gone for all money.

My guess is that they’re stockpiling Anti-Abbott propaganda and pitching the wagons for one last stand.
“Wall Punch” proves that you can conjure sticky bullshit out of nothing more than a 30-year old anecdote. The ABC will run with that between now and D-day, or until Malcolm replaces Tony (wishful thinking on their part).

  131. JC

Fuck off schlossed. Go cry somewhere else, you moron

  132. feelthebern

My guess is that they’re stockpiling Anti-Abbott propaganda and pitching the wagons for one last stand.

They will have to go full Leftard.
    But what do they have?
They’ve dug & dug & dug & come up with nothing.
    They just don’t get TA.
He is a good example of a Stoic.
The first PM or premier like that in living memory.
That’s why TA is becoming a globally recognized PM.
Not some media whore like Rudd/Gillard/Rudd.

  133. Hey Token. No Liverpool fan thought they were in the title fight this year. Top four would be good. Small steps.

  134. “Wall Punch” proves that you can conjure sticky bullshit out of nothing more than a 30-year old anecdote.

And yet we’re supposed to believe that something that happened at Slater and Gorden a mere 20 years ago – with mega-documentation or lack thereof, violation of procedures, money funnelled off into a union slush fund, then a ‘fireside chat’ followed by an ignominious sacking disguised as a resignation, with current police involvement and a Royal Commission just round the corner – is not worth reporting.

  135. Caroline Ross

Piers is lucky to be out of there. That show needs to be axed. Cassidy is well overpaid for this shamelessly indulgent and inappropriately left-leaning program – I cannot believe that they belittled and scolded Piers Akerman that way.

  136. Sorry JC, did you say something? Say it again. No, I promise, I’ll pay attention this time. Really.

  137. feelthebern

  143. Armadillo

One more name to add to the list –

Doesn’t Judith Sloan appear occasionally? There must be hundreds of examples where the ABC has made assertions without any proof whatsoever. The only difference is that Milne and Ackerman have been the only two singled out. Tim Blair being a dog fucker is a the most ludicrous and extreme of them. ‘The Punch’ is another that was repeated over and over. What’s worse, being accused of being gay or being accused of threatening physical violence against a woman? What about being openly ridiculed for your religious beliefs – “the mad monk’? Being gay or being a torturer? Accused of loving another man or hating all women on the planet?

  144. JC

So why is she appearing on Q&A then?

  145. Armadillo

Another one that CL mentioned on the OT is George Pell being wrongly accused of raping a man and having his name spread all over the left media.

  146. feelthebern

Armadillo, it was Chris Kenny they made a canine-lover.

  147. incoherent rambler

[The ABC] are guilty of making reckless and unsubstantiated accusations and public attacks against individuals and institutions that hold views contrary to their own.

Would this line from Piers’ blog have anything to do with the ABC decision?

it was Chris Kenny they made a canine-lover.

    Opps.

I can’t wait for Piers’ response….a lot more people read Piers Ackerman than watch that Insiders Bulshit.

I’m guessing Piers will have a few not so kind words for Cassidya nod the ABC.

  150. Armadillo

I can’t wait for Piers’ response….a lot more people read Piers Ackerman than watch that Insiders Bulshit

Interesting point. They just untied his hands – unintended consequences springs to mind here.

  151. Armadillo

Honestly, if the ABC were serious, they would simply refuse to broadcast anything said by the Greens. Unsubstantiated claims?

Senator Milne also accused Tony Abbott of launching a royal commission into union corruption to “distract the nation from his destructive” climate policies, which she said were waning in popularity as voters personally experienced climate change. “Getting rid of the clean energy package is now not nearly as persuasive as people are sweltering, people are out on the streets because they can’t stand the inefficient housing they are living in, in terms of their energy efficiency.”

  152. Piers’ sin is not about mentioning TM’s alleged gayness. It’s the revelation that JG and TM have been the laughing stock of the CPG that mattered.

What do they have to cover for now anyway?

She might be attracted to and have been in love with men and women, but what does that matter?

At the cat we care about policy and competence. She performed poorly on both counts.

To dismiss Akerman for saying what we were thinking is akin to Lese Majeste laws or genuflecting to the Hapsburg hat in the town square – or worshiping a defunct regime, which is wholly bizarre.

It’s not just that Gillard is a lesbian but that she tried to disguise that ‘fact’ by lying. That lie is just another lie amidst a context which was really all lies.

At law witnesses have probative value that derives from their character. If Gillard’s character is a lie then her denials of culpability have to be viewed in that context.

Armoa Dill, The subject is not the fucking greens it’s about ABC black banning Akerman six months ago and that not being in the public arena ’till now and the banning seemingly resulted from Akermans’ assertion on the Sunday Morning Shit Show that the Gallery of Cock Suckers had been aware for zonks of questions about the travelling salesmans’ orientation.
Interestingly not one of the gallery has come out post that morning refuting Akermans’ suggestion.
Cassidys’ known friendship with Gillards’ hand bag had nothing to do with Akerman getting the arse ?

  166. Armadillo

Jim, my point was that he was allegedly sacked for making an unsubstantiated claim. Every time the Green filth are on the ABC, they do exactly the same thing. Reread what that nutter Milne said. There is no consistency in their argument.

Jeez it’s Monday..how remiss of me not to tell the Greens to get farked

  170. Mk50 of Brisbane, Henchman to the VRWC

There’s a reason the only show I occasionally watch on the ABC is Grand Designs, and would ever watch regularly is Time Team….

  171. Wozzup

Everyone is missing the point. If you listen to what Piers said it was along the lines that everyone in the press gallery has been saying that Matheson is gay but (and here is the important bit) SO WHAT. Indicating he thought this to be juvenile and irrelevant in this day and age. He was sacked for defending Matheson.

  172. blogstrop

Brad (by omission) endorses “dog fucker” ploy and horrendous pre-emptive judgement of Navy by ABC, but roundly condemns Piers.

  173. johanna

Yeah Mk50, Time Team (which hasn’t been on for ages), Dalziel & Pascoe and the Agatha Christie dramatisations are my list. Not a lot for my taxes there – I could buy the DVDs for less.

It was inappropriate of Piers Akerman to say what he did. If it was a mainly conservative panel and a Left leaning journalist said something about the Abbotts we would be similarly annoyed.

It’s poor form of the media to go about discussing these very personal issues in regard to any prime minister. Maybe Piers Akerman got a bit tricked into it, but he should have known better, in my opinion.

No, as I said above the credibility of Gillard was at stake in several serious issues. If she lives a lie how do we know she isn’t prepared to lie about other things?

She’s done some pretty shady stuff in her life, but this situation involved discussing Tim Mathison, living in the Lodge as the PM’s defacto/husband and basically accepted as such. I definitely think there’s a level of respect that should have been shown to that situation, and Piers Akerman breached it, even if he was goaded.

  180. JC

    Turn it off Candy.

This is the same organization which gave a clean bill of health showing a journalist humping a dog. It’s the same organization that allowed David Marr run wild with a story about punching a wall 30 years ago. It’s the same organization allowing their Jakarta correspondent impugn Naval personnel without evidence.

The point isn’t if Piers acted properly. Why was he booted and the others weren’t?

  181. Gab

And why was he booted NOW, eight months after their little “review”.

  182. candy

Sacking him was way over the top but there’s a level of respect these panelists should show and not discuss such deeply personal issues of a prime minister in such a free way. Leave that stuff to movie star gossip shows.

  183. ChrisPer

The double standard is evident. There was no penalty across the board for the direst slanders against conservatives and their families, especially the Abbotts. Certainly this suggestion was below the belt, but it should have been derided and forgotten.

Sack the lot, raze the buildings, sell the real estate.

  184. Bruce

“If it was a mainly conservative panel and a Left leaning journalist said something about the Abbotts we would be similarly annoyed. ” Yes we would but the slimy Cassidy and his fellow travelers wouldn’t,and that’s the point.
