Remember when John Howard’s Australia was likened to Hitler’s Germany? I do. Here’s one nonjudgmental report dated May 27, 2004:
One of Australia’s highest-profile gay couples described John Howard as a dinosaur and likened his vision of Australia to apartheid-era South Africa or Adolf Hitler’s Germany.
Former Australian Medical Association (AMA) president Kerryn Phelps also accused the prime minister of playing “wedge politics” by legislating to stop gays from marrying or adopting children from overseas.
And she [wrongly] predicted a “massive” voter backlash at this year’s federal election.
Her partner Jackie Stricker said: “It makes me feel as if I’m living either in South Africa or Hitler’s Germany, to be honest with you.
“If you keep trying to marginalise and discriminate against one group, it’s a real worry living in a country that does that.”
Talk about colouring the news agenda. Most worryingly, however, was the one-sided nature of such reports. Here’s another (July 12, 2007):
In a scathing address to the Sydney film school festival last night, Mr Keating described Mr Howard as “a nationalist and not a patriot”. He then attributed the same description to Adolf Hitler.
“A patriot will not exclude a person from another race from the community where they have lived side by side and whom he has known for many years but a nationalist will always remain suspicious of someone who does not seem to belong to his kind of people or more likely his kind of thinking,” Mr Keating said.
“Shades there of John Howard’s discomfort with Australia’s multicultural community and a disgust of the Islamic community.”
Mr Keating said when the prime minister disparaged elites, he was disparaging cosmopolitan attitudes which proved his nationalism.
“In Hitler’s day the term ‘elite’ had not yet arrived. If it had, the nationalist in him would have compelled him to use it, for it’s easy shorthand if nothing else.”
Obviously, mainstream Jews have a different take. Indeed, the Howard-is-very-much like-Hitler theorists will be delighted to learn that … surprise!:
A stalwart supporter of Israel, [former PM John] Howard was presented with the George S. Wise Medal by Tel Aviv University vice-president Amos Elad, who travelled to Australia specifically for the Australian Friends of Tel Aviv University (AFTAU) NSW event.
AFTAU NSW president David Dinte told The AJN the George S. Wise Medal is “only given when there is a worthy candidate whose extraordinary contribution to society merits formal recognition”.
“Mr Howard is only the tenth recipient of the George S. Wise Medal since its inception in 1986,” he said.
“Other esteemed recipients of this Award are [former Israeli diplomat] Abba Eban; [Israel’s first astronaut] Ilan Ramon; [economist] Stanley Fischer and [former French prime minister] Dominique de Villepin”.
Tel Aviv University president Joseph Klafter said in a letter to Howard: “Your significant political, economic and social achievements as the second longest-serving Australian prime minister, together with your unwavering, courageous advocacy of the State of Israel spanning decades, your deep, abiding friendship with the Australian Jewish community, and your condemnation of International terrorism in all its forms, resonate well with the precepts as emulated by George Wise.”
Finally, I must congratulate our mainstream media journalists for doing such a great job of hiding John Howard’s George S. Wise Medal. I love you guys!
