“Fair and equitable pay and conditions for employees, including the maintenance of a relevant safety net”

The Age calls it a leaked draft as if there was some scandal being revealed but even they could hardly make more of it than that this is an inquiry that needs to happen. To no one’s surprise whatsoever, Abbott government to scrutinise pay, penalties, conditions.

The inquiry is framed around the need to maintain “fair and equitable pay and conditions for employees, including the maintenance of a relevant safety net”…. The terms of reference, which are yet to be finalised and have not been signed off by cabinet, are carefully framed to ensure any recommendations “maximise outcomes for Australian employers, employees and the economy, bearing in mind the need to ensure workers are protected, the need for business to be able to grow, prosper and employ and the need to reduce unnecessary and excessive regulation”.

Anything that relates pay and conditions to productivity and performance is opposed by the unions as a matter of routine. But even here I think they know better. If we want secure jobs, faster growth and higher incomes across the board, this is how we are going to get them.

    A lot of poor people allow themselves to be exploited as a result of this odious empty value statement.

    Pattern bargaining and CPI-plus wage indexation, masquerading as enterprise bargaining, has not been good for the Australian economy.

    I must say the tendency of the Howard government to slag-off at slower income growth under the previous Labor government (which was, in part, a deliberate strategy to restore the profit share) may have been smart short-term retail politics, but was not in the longer term national interest – particularly at a time when the economy was awash with windfall gains, and sweetheart deals were temptingly easy to do.

    If Abbott and his fellow softcocks want to be re-elected, they have to keep unemployment under control.

    This review is little more than recognition of the fact that unemployment is at its highest level since the election of that dickhead Rudd. If the Government don’t want labor to have something to beat them over the head with, any changes that lead to the winding back the employment strangling effects of the Fair Work regime and the sidelining of the unions, can only be a positive.

    In all this talk about exploitation in relation to wages, I have not recently heard of any reference to the issue of worker’s shares which can be allotted free to employee’s of say 5 years service & carrying dividends at shareholder’s levels to be surrendered on termination of employment. Worth a thought?

    Perhaps if the government wants to put forward such conditions as suggested above then all government employees from the PM down to the lowest public servant adopt these recommendations along with all NGO organisations and unions. The time has come to lead from the top. ALL public sector / NGO organisations pay their top levels too much above the going rate for the performance provided. Private sector companies answer to shareholders. Public sector has for too long demanded more without ceding anything. If you want guaranteed job security you should be accepting less pay for it because you are gouging people who cant afford your benefits. It is time to renegotiate all public sector contracts and decide for profit or security. You are not entitled to both.

    Equitable pay, sure thing. I propose a bold experiment. The government and all concerned NGOs should determine a good living wage – say 50,000 a year – and make that their sole and solitary pay bracket.
