What is best in life?

Elle Hardy has a piece at The Hoopla talking about what the Abbott government is doing right. She identifies several things the Abbott government is doing right – but includes this:

The appointment of ‘Freedom Commissioner’ Tim Wilson will help deliver the eternal vigilance that is famously said to be the price of liberty. We don’t have freedom of speech or freedom of (or from) religion enshrined in our constitution, nor are our fundamental freedoms protected by a bill of rights. While Wilson’s appointment was a political move, to be unsupportive of the appointment of one public servant to uphold liberal democratic values is morally vacuous.

While I don’t necessarily disagree with that statement, I’d prefer to see my good friend Tim Wilson sacked along with all his new work-mates at the Australian Human Rights Commission.

Awesome trolling … read the comments for yourself. Simply magnificent.

I got through the first four comments and gave up:
    * “$4.5B mining subsidies”
    * “Gina and co getting billions in fuel subsidies”

Do these dimwits even do a modicum of research? (that’s a rhetorical question).

You’re right, the article is like the Trojan Horse of trolls.

Got too much time on your hands Sinc? :)

Carleen thinks the rain stopped the boats.

Or it could simply be a) a reflection of the annual monsoon season which typically tends to be a slower time for people smugglers and boat arrivals, and/or b) the fact that this government seems to equate not telling with not happening.

Good old Marian. As crazy as ever.

bb claims that the flow of people seeking asylum has ceased. There is no evidence to support that statement.. We know that asylum seekers have been subjected to interference at sea, by our Defence forces, forcibly transferred to Australian owned vessels and forced to travel to Indonesia although they are not Indonesian nationals. We do not know if possessions have been stolen from the asylum seekers nor if they have been treated humanely. That information is deliberately hidden from us signifies possible serious cover-up of improper treatment of refugees who are fleeing terrorism and seeking the safe haven that Australia is committed to providing to them. .

What, like their Nike runners, their Rolex watches, their iPads and iPhones?

That Marion person is rather a dim bulb.

Aahh Gab, you forgot to mention the Louis Vuitten…..

  6. entropy

Four comments and not one quote from Arnie’s Conan the Barbarian? For shame

  7. Gab

Oh yeah, there’s pictures of those poor “asylum seekers” with LV luggage. Forgot about that.

I’m surprised someone hasn’t answered the question with
“Crush your enemies, see them driven before you. Hear the lamentations of his women”

And entropy was on the ball…..
    Great minds think alike.

    Here, entropy.

To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women.

  12. Gab

Wow, you do an excellent Conan impersonation, Abu :)

  13. Abu Chowdah

Didn’t read comments before responding but, yes, entropy – for shame!

  14. Abu Chowdah

LOL. I didn’t realise Sinc had linked to that dialogue until just now.

Terrible, but awesome movie. A favourite.

    What is best in life?

I was only last weekend bemoaning the fact that there are no strapping young men employed to carry one in a sedan chair or palanquin off the racecourse when one has imbibed a tad too much of the demon drink.
Now that would be best in life.

Had none of you noticed whither the words “Simply magnificent” linked?

Corinne Grant has a nice rant over there.

    Standard Abbott666 dross.

Apparently she’s an expert on everything.

    Except comedy.. ..

Had none of you noticed whither the words “Simply magnificent” linked?

I assumed it was a link to the comments at the Hoopla.

Silly me. Now I’m off to read my Savage Sword of Conan comics.

  19. cynical1, below the alleged comedienne’s rant was this:

Corinne Grant isn’t the only one who has something to say about Tony Abbott’s performance as PM so far. Senator Scott Ludlam extended a welcome to Western Australia to the Prime Minister yesterday, while reflecting on some of the Government’s recent decisions that may not be so welcome. The speech has already had more than 250,000 views on YouTube.

Numbers of views, the modern form of Argumentum ab auctoritate, is now equivalent to excellence it seems.

  20. Splatacrobat

The comments are the lamentations of leftie women?

  21. Abu Chowdah

Thanks for the link to the AHRC, Sinc. What a rogue’s gallery the commissioners are, although I’m glad they appointed a reasonably attractive gel for the sex discrimination commissioner. Standards must be maintained and it’s nice to see someone who’s put on some lippie and pearls and made an effort.

  22. Abu Chowdah

Numbers of views, the modern form of Argumentum ab auctoritate, is now equivalent to excellence it seems.

In an interview in Perth, Abbott was asked how he felt about Ludlum’s speech. He said he supposed he’d just have to console himself with an additional glass of Margaret River red that evening.

    Pow. Straight between the legs.

  23. wreckage

The sheer length of the comments section is bewildering. And I have bee in arguments with presumably literate people who insisted that “anything the government doesn’t take” was a perfectly serviceable definition of a subsidy.

  24. nerblnob

Gawd. I went and read through all of that. I’ll have to put RT back on the telly now.

  25. Baldrick

    That’s a whole Q&A audience right there.

  26. Dan

Sinc please just embed the link to the article in the quote as is common practice.

  27. Perfidious Albino

Enlightening! Kudos to Elle Hardy for making the effort at least to give credit where due. To merely dismiss as ‘click bait’ any alternative perspective to the received wisdom just shows what an echo chamber The Hoopla mostly is. And don’t get me started on the referenced list of 100+ list of Abbott666 atrocities compiled by the self styled ‘Australian Independent Media Network’ and their pet union urger…

  28. Lily taters

OMG those comments are so earnest and so stupid and so funny. They rail against the “ideology” of free markets as the opposite to communism I suppose….. What the hell? How do they think people have traded over the centuries? There has always and will always be some market control where we have order. The only truly free market would be what springs up in chaos and collapse. it is also a little disheartening to think these people so passionately slosh this tosh around to general approval esp of abc and fairfax types and no doubt the morally upright artists of the biennale trough. Funny to read, though.

Meh, It was linked by Bolt.

How many went to see what the green goose was whining about…

  30. H B Bear

Wendy Harmer, Corinne Grant, Van Badhem, Tracey Spicer … this is obviously where thought goes to die.

These glorified mummy blogs by mediocre women cast aside by the patriarchal mainstream media really are the pits. Even if I joined the Australian Army and had my wang cut off I doubt I would see the attraction.

  31. brc

250,000 views. Meh. Not long ago Bob Brown was bragging about 1 million votes for the Greens.

I bet there is an entire back-catalog of funny kitten-face remixes with higher view counts than that.

Oh, and I’ll share a little secret. YouTube doesn’t share the amount of completed views, only people who arrived and pressed ‘play’ at some point.

Argumentium ad social medium is a pretty low standard. I can buy that stuff for pennies. Fence book likes, YouTube views, twitter followers and retweets. All available on the free market to purchase.

Cohen the barbarian reckoned it was ‘good dentishtry and shoft toilet paper’.
