You’ve been warned

If you happen to be the kind of person who thinks the global warming is a modern form of the madness of crowds, then the world must indeed look like an insane asylum. The article is titled, Global warming dials up our risks, UN Report says. This, remember, is not science fiction:

If the world doesn’t cut pollution of heat-trapping gases, the already noticeable harms of global warming could spiral “out of control,” the head of a United Nations scientific panel warned Monday.

And he’s not alone. The Obama White House says it is taking this new report as a call for action, with Secretary of State John Kerry saying “the costs of inaction are catastrophic.”

Rajendra Pachauri, chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change that issued the 32-volume, 2,610-page report here early Monday, told The Associated Press: “it is a call for action.” Without reductions in emissions, he said, impacts from warming “could get out of control.”

One of the study’s authors, Maarten van Aalst, a top official at the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, said, “If we don’t reduce greenhouse gases soon, risks will get out of hand. And the risks have already risen.”

Twenty-first century disasters such as killer heat waves in Europe, wildfires in the United States, droughts in Australia and deadly flooding in Mozambique, Thailand and Pakistan highlight how vulnerable humanity is to extreme weather, according to the report from the Nobel Prize-winning group of scientists. The dangers are going to worsen as the climate changes even more, the report’s authors said.

“We’re now in an era where climate change isn’t some kind of future hypothetical,” said the overall lead author of the report, Chris Field of the Carnegie Institution for Science in California. “We live in an area where impacts from climate change are already widespread and consequential.”

Nobody is immune.

The US has always been the nut to crack for the global warming nuts. Obama and the US left are gearing up to formally kick off what we went through in 2010-2012 – fortunately for him the IPCC is more than happy to oblige with some boilerplate to help soften the ground.

    Mail On Line says -

‘No one will be untouched’: Climate change will lead to war, famine and extreme weather, claims UN report

    image of,
    Projected temperature change from 2081-2100.

For the first time, the report connects hotter global temperatures to hotter global tempers. Top scientists are saying that climate change will complicate and worsen existing global security problems, such as civil wars, strife between nations and refugees
Launching the report in Yokohama, Japan, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change also predicted that rising temperatures will exacerbate poverty and damage animal and marine species

Is this the Mail’s way of telling us that only moronic paranoiacs still believe anything greenies preach?

They could be some some pretty serious regulations though – and in place for three years.

Also I wouldn’t put it past a fair chunk of the republicans to offer up their own ETS just to piss off the base.

So the models are basically fucked, which means they can’t really use them without being laughed off stage and they now have to resort to scaring the shit out of people.

    No wonder Richard Tol resigned.

It’s now a full 1/2 C cooler than it was during the 1998 El Niño. That’s about 50 years of gerbil worming at the 20C trend rate, so 1998 is our future for the year 2065.

Anybody actually remember 1998, or have an almanac? Other than bring 1/2C warmer, was there anything unusual about it? Tropic cyclones in Patagonia, every species on the brink of extinction, mass wars over the few drops of water left, every AUS capital city a ghost town, that sort of thing? Do I have anything to worry about? (At age 40ish, 2065 seems about as far as I need to extrapolate.)

There was a story the other week where they used the climate “models” to show that we would all die in a small nuclear war.

    He’s clearly not on-message.

You’re supposed to say that we have just enough time left to stop it by taking drastic action NOW (etc etc since 1994) .

The ABC’s News Radio this morning was running an old story, no doubt trotted out by the IPCC for its American off-broadway debut, the one about fish relocating due to temperature change. A quick google sees this one having lives in 2005 to 2010, with coverage by the usual suspects and even News.com.au.

    Perturbed:

If we can hold the line for a few more years, we’ll have won

I think you are reading it wrong. Despite all the facts being on the sceptic side the alarmists are still in control.

Soon, the natural cycle will turn back to mild warming. The alarmists will leap upon and amplify that – and their case will be proven.

If the sceptics cannot make their case after nearly 20 years of no warming, they have no chance when another 10 to 20 years of very mild warming starts up. Which, in the way of natural cycles, is probably about to start happening.

John Hewson is named as being involved with a lobby group that pressures universities to divest themselves of investments anything to do with fossil fuels.
There are way too many people in our society that are working against society’s best interests.

  26. Senile Old Guy

Soon, the natural cycle will turn back to mild warming. The alarmists will leap upon and amplify that – and their case will be proven.

Not necessarily; there are people predicting increasing cooling. If that happens, climate alarmists will really start hyperventilating.

The whole thing is now demonstrable nonsense and I think many people are on to it. After all, for years the mantra was more CO2 gives an increasing “greenhouse effect” gives warmer temperatures gives catastrophe X. Skeptics have fairly successfully hammered home the fact that there has been no warming for nearly two decades — twenty years — so the rest of the gravy train daisy chain of cause and effect falls apart.

Add in the rising price of energy, the uselessness of “alternative” energy, some spectacular failed predictions by meteorologists — the UK guys take the medal here; “buy us better computers and we’ll get it even more wrong” — and I think the wheels left the wagon some time ago. What we see are the zealots trying to get that wagon to go one more funding cycle.

  27. entropy

This year should be a warmer one globally. A strong monsoon has pushed a lot of warm water eastward below the surface. It will rise in the central pacific in early spring, bringing on a cracker of an El Niño event, which hadn’t happened for quite a few years now. In fact El Niño is overdue, not happening since 2008.

So any uptick in global as a result of that will bring the ninnies out. The last few years the BOM has only been able to talk about warm Australian temperatures.

like all pyramid schemes, the global warming pyramid scheme will require the later entrants to the bottom of the scheme to be the most rabidly fanatical.they will have to work themselves up into a foaming rage of hysterical blindness to keep the critical mass of funding exploding at the required rate to fund the phantasies of the latecomers.

all the uni students studying for degrees to milk the global warming gravy train, all the ‘investors’ that put real money into pyramid power, all the punters left holding carbon certificates. none of these will get out of the pyramid scheme until it collapses.

the requirement for exponential growth of real cash coming in is what collapses all pyramid schemes. can the worlds mightiest kenyan sign over the american economy to the pyramid scheme and allow another few years of exponential growth?.

    Just a coincidence.

If we go back into a warming trend the game is over.

Just like the left in every other case, it matters little how wrong they are, what matters is how many institutions they can corrupt.

  38. johanna

according to the report from the Nobel Prize-winning group of scientists.

Just one of the many untruths in this pack of lies.

The IPCC’s staff and contributors were awarded the (utterly discredited) Nobel Peace Prize for their work on reports issued prior to the award. Unless they are claiming that the staff and contributors to the 2014 report are identical to those who were on deck seven years ago (which is untrue) they are not a “Nobel Prize winning groupof scientists.” And note, they did not win a Nobel Prize for science. So it’s two lies in one statement – one direct and one by implication.

Methane-spewing microbe blamed in Earth’s worst mass extinction

Quick, someone bump Mike Carlton off before he kills us all!

  41. Bruce of Newcastle

Permian mass extinction was almost certainly an asteroid plus associated Siberian volcanic flood basalt eruptions. Bugs do not cause flood basalt eruptions but asteroids do. Same as the Cretaceous mass extinction (Chicxulub crate plus Deccan eruptions on the other side of the planet)

The bugs idea is just the climateers doing the usual: everything bad is caused by GHG’s, give us money!

  42. Since our most extreme years were 1902 (drought) and 1950 (the opposite), since our biggest flood was 1956 and our (and the world’s) biggest fire was 1851; since our worst cyclone was 1899 and our worst tornado 1970; since our (and the world’s) longest heatwave was 1923-4 and our most lethal heatwaves were 1896 and 1939…I’m having trouble picking up a pattern here.

Nonetheless, I’ll cop the tip about Greenhouse. When living inside glass receptacles in laboratories I’ll be very wary of any increases in CO2 levels.

The War of the Worlds (1898)
Book II, Ch. 8 (Ch. 25 in editions without Book divisions)
In another moment I had scrambled up the earthen rampart and stood upon its crest, and the interior of the redoubt was below me. A mighty space it was, with gigantic machines here and there within it, huge mounds of material and strange shelter places. And scattered about it, some in their overturned war-machines, some in the now rigid handling-machines, and a dozen of them stark and silent and laid in a row, were the Martians—dead!—slain by the putrefactive and disease bacteria against which their systems were unprepared; slain as the red weed was being slain; slain, after all man’s devices had failed, by the humblest things that God, in his wisdom, has put upon this earth.

On the Friday afternoon before the IPCC released its updated dross Obama handed back what was left of America’s control of the Internet just in time for Banki to piss in the POTUS pocket .

Quote:It came as little surprise, then, that United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Tuesday praised the U.S. Commerce Department’s decision.</em

“The Secretary-General takes note of this important development,” a statement from Ban’s office said, calling for all stakeholders to pursue a “single, open, free, secure and trustworthy Internet.”

Alarm bells going off a soon as I read this.

Hewson was hotdesking in an office across the corridor from my former employer. I asked a pal there what Hewson was working on, as it was a resources-related consultancy.

    The answer :

Larus Energy was incorporated in New South Wales, Australia on 23 November 2009 and has positioned itself to participate in the forecast growth of PNG’s oil and gas sector.

Dr. John Hewson – Executive Chairman

    Fucking hypocrite !!

I have nothing but contempt for this guy – who infamously walked out on his wife and kids because he was just ‘too busy’.

In a way I feel sorry, because clearly he has some mental issues ( JC to comment here as I recall they worked together in NY ? ), but Hewson puts himself out in the public domain pushing interests left, centre, and back to the left again, and thus is fair game to be called out for the doubledealing whackball he is.

One of the great cultural warriors of recent times (IMHO) will soon be putting one of the high priests of the AGW religious movement to the sword in a court of law. Though the odds are Michael Mann will fold like a cheap bunnings chair once the process of discovery starts. I speak of course of the one and only Mark Steyn.

To Robert Blair-sorry chum, the cycle seems to be heading for a cooling period, not warming, as the sun heads into a minimum. SO holding the line while the temperature drops and co2 goes up will DESTROY the alarmists crowd. Not even gullible rusted on Green/ALP morons will be able to argue their case when the whole world can see the divulgence in co2 and temperature. In saying that I’m not sure how this AGW scam has managed to last so long when there is already historical evidence showing no correlation between co2 and global temperatures.

  50. Senile Old Guy

    Bruce of N:

The microbe would have been unable to proliferate so wildly without proper mineral nutrients. The researchers found that cataclysmic volcanic eruptions that occurred at that time in Siberia drove up ocean concentrations of nickel, a metallic element that just happens to facilitate this microbe’s growth.

The Permian extinction has always been one of the trickier ones to explain. And if small bugs can create the conditions for life (by producing O2), this is not so out there. But I want more evidence before calling the bug guilty of ecocide.

A remake of the sequel In Like Flint (1967) would also be most welcome:
‘It posits an international feminist conspiracy to depose the ruling American patriarchy with a feminist matriarchy’ (Wiki).
(Sorry to joke about such a serious subject as impending catastrophe).

  53. Bruce of Newcastle

SoG – There have been several reports of shocked quartz and chondrites associated with the PT boundary, although its less clear than the KT boundary. However the Deccan Traps seem to be a result of shock wave fracturing of the crust on the opposite side from the Chicxulub crater. So the correspondence of the Siberian flood basalt event actually supports the impact origin. At times there have been suggestions that the Bedout crater may be associated with the event. Its harder to pick the relative location of such candidates with respect to Siberia because the continental crust has moved so much in 250 My.

The methane observation may well be consistent with this since methane can be produced in large volumes during flood basalt events, including interaction of magma with coal seams and/or oceanic ooze. Both of those can explain low C13/C12 ratios. Methanogenic bacteria could also thrive in anaerobic conditions after an asteroid hit.

If so the observation of bacterial action would be consistent with an asteroid strike: but with it as a result, not a cause, of the great dying.

Again the thing which characterises the climateers is they hypothesise high sensitivity for GHG’s, which doesn’t fit other climate data. But if you think GHG ECS is high then you’d be inclined to think a methane burp could kill the world. Cart before the horse in my opinion. But I know which way around you’d want it to be to get a nice juicy followup grant.
