About parasites and other vermin

Great fleas have little fleas upon their backs to bite ‘em,
And little fleas have lesser fleas, and so ad infinitum.

I came upon two articles one after the other about start-up companies in San Francisco. These start-ups create enormous wealth for those who build them, but they also create enormous resentment amongst those who envy others for their success. I have therefore written a post that may be found at Quadrant Online that deals with the resentment such success has created. This was the flyer distributed in the neighbourhood of one of the truly successful Silicon Valley entrepreneurs that started me thinking about these things [bad language alert!]:

“With each new tech corporation comes a wave of fresh techies, who on average earn four times more than a normal service worker.”

Ah, that would be the techies who work their bums off programming to 2am in the morning who don’t have time to cook dinner and so are buying their takeaways from the normal service workers.

Who would earn zero times as much as a fresh techie if not for them. There’re 200 to 300 people applying for every service job in the US at the moment.

  2. Infidel Tiger

Why are they sucking their cocks?

  3. Percy

Why are they sucking their cocks?

And why don’t they charge more for the service?

  4. Infidel Tiger

And why don’t they charge more for the service?

No wonder they are in dead end jobs. No ambition.

  5. JC

Wow! That’s not bad. So you can get a latte and a blow job at the same time while on the way to work in San Fran. That’s service.

  6. pete m

These people just don’t appreciate the opportunities created for them by capitalism.

  7. Percy

Indeed I.T, surely they can milk these rich techies for more. (pun intended)

From such envy ultimately comes Communism. Then that entrepreneur will down his tools and we’ll all watch the big slide downhill. It is the Communists who are the ultimate parasites.

It’s a long way from a simple leaflet to that, but the leaflet is the start. Hate the rich (or richer than you). Ignore how an economy works. Ignore how to seek a better deal for yourself by your own economic efforts or as fair reward for your own working efforts (by moving, seeking a better job etc.). Instead, just complain, and take, and destroy.

I have a lot of sympathy for people who are doing it tough, or who feel things are bad for them. I’d like many things to be different in this world. But they won’t be so by leafleting to destroy jobs and take away enterprise. The rich have a responsibility to assist where they can through giving to organisations that can help the truly needy to get back on their feet, and the leaflet complainers need to know that more high tech jobs mean that their boats can rise too on the flood of wealth creation. There is no money tree.

Why are they sucking their cocks?

Well it won’t suck itself will it?

San Fran ‘culture’ can be observed here, thanks to Zombietime.
Link is to his warning page. You cannot say you were not warned.
WARNING – exceptionally revolting images of the Folsom Street ‘fair[y]‘

There is more culture in a teaspoon of youghurt than there is in SF.

I guess the whoring business ain’t what it used to be. Sounds like these workers are getting screwed.

  12. blogstrop

Coming so soon after the Eich affair reinforces the view by some that the cultural wars, fought mainly in the media and in politics, is morphing into a sort of civil war that could get ugly.

A country that elects Obama for a second term and has so many indicators of social schism is not in a good place.

It could lead ultimately down the path of Chavez, or that of Pinochet.

For me, the letter drop about Kevin Rose is more about the gentrification of San Francisco and its effects on the rents for service workers rather than the success of the geeks moving to San Fran. It just happens that because the people mostly come from a particular occupation or background, they are easily targeted.

These start-ups create enormous wealth for those who build them

It can create enormous wealth for investors and founders. More often than likely this isn’t the case. Investments by Angels/Investors are spread to find that one company that exits or lists for a return amongst the startups that don’t.

Mike Judge, a pillar of the Silicon Valley establishment,

As cool is Mike Judge and his work is, Kevin Rose is far closer to SV establishment than him.

Why are they sucking their cocks?

    It’s a quote from a movie, apparently.

  14. Antipodean

Sucking cocks and serving coffee, I’d steer clear of the soy latte…

  15. and we are tired of this miserable and untenable situation

So what are you going to do about it?

How about you go to night school, for starters? Or even day school? Or look for another job?

Naaaaaaaaaaah. That would involve some effort and sacrifice. Much more fun to complain about it.

PS. As for oral sex, that is clearly a career choice that you made somewhere along the track. How about making another one now?

  16. Mk50 of Brisbane, Henchman to the VRWC

Speaking of ‘other vermin’, ‘parasite’s, suckers of cock and such, where IS Numbers?

  17. H B Bear

This sounds like it is written by Pajama Boy.

Welcome to Obama’s America. No wonder everyone is eating their lunch.

  18. That’s the most honest statement I’ve heard this year, Lizzie.

It’s a long way from a simple leaflet to that, but the leaflet is the start.

When we were kids, American protests were reportedly counter-protested by people called ‘Hard-hats’. Apparently working class people would turn up in small groups and speedily apply cluebats to the whiny little flower children and neo-Marxist students from the ruling class who were ruining other people’s working day.

As a general principle, I believe its important we retain and benefit from the lessons of the past.

  20. lotocoti

From one of Steve’s supplementary links is this gem demanding capitalists pony up the cash to prove an anti-capitalist utopia is possible.

We demand that Google give three billion dollars to an anarchist organization of our choosing. This money will then be used to create autonomous, anti-capitalist, and anti-racist communities throughout the Bay Area and Northern California. In these communities, whether in San Francisco or in the woods, no one will ever have to pay rent and housing will be free. With this three billion from Google, we will solve the housing crisis in the Bay Area and prove to the world that an anarchist world is not only possible but in fact irrepressible.

Parasite may not mean what they think it means.

  21. no one will ever have to pay rent [when Google’s customers pay it for us instead].

Those folk, I understand, have also invented a perpetual-motion machine which could power homes at no cost and without any external energy input (except for the electricity from the diesel-powered generator which some evil capitalist corporation must provide). They’ve also found a way of living without food (as long as we, rightly, don’t class soylent green, tofu and reprocessed, vitamin-enhanced faeces as food).

  22. Myrddin Seren

Note that it wasn’t just a leaflet drop – they picketed the guy’s house.

Protesters stood with signs and handed out flyers outside of a Google Ventures partner and entrepreneur’s home in San Francisco’s Potrero Hill neighborhood Sunday, calling him a “parasite” and a “leech.”

Kind of like – painting a target on him.

Or strongly encouraging him to leave town.

Mob with metaphoric burning brands ( CO2 neutral – hence metaphoric ) – tried and tested effective response.

  23. Rabz

Or what? Firebombing peoples’ houses? Kidnapping capitalists’ kiddies? Murdering counter revolutionaries?

These people are insane – and potentially very dangerous.

  24. mundi

One would think they would be happy to have more wealth being generated so closely. Certainly if an area is full of rich yuppies then there are plenty of good business opportunities.

We are starting to see the baby boomer hump go past. Those over 40 are now suddenly finding a young amount of youngsters making vastly more $$$ and not stuck in dead end unionized government/council jobs.

  25. realist

Kevin Rose and all of his venture capitalist friends are cordially invited to come to South Australia.

  26. Notafan

Ken Rose should take his money and his techies somewhere else, am sure they would be welcome in Tennessee or Kentucky, then the haters could go back to sucking their own.
Reminds me of the lefty women telling me how bad it was to rent an apartment in Barcelona as it pushed out the locals, fine then no more tourism in Barcelona, that’ll work.
When will we reach peak stupid?

I find it hard to get charged up about dead shit commies harassing rich progressives.

    I rather enjoy it.

These people just don’t appreciate the opportunities created for them by capitalism.

web and mobile design and development is very broad but also very shallow. HTML5, CSS, NodeJS and DJango are actually very easy to learn with plenty of modern tools and youtube to help at the ready.

These guys really have no excuse. Their argument really is with government land development and property commissars (and/or the developers and land bankers who game the system)

  30. Empire Strikes Back

It defies belief that such whining and moaning comes from the state that bequeathed the world the “Californian”.

These loons need to spend time down in San Fernando Valley and learn how to smoke to the top. You’re selling yourself short, psychos.

  31. Max

They are really complaining about a classic example of Georgism this is exactly what has happened to the renters of Silicon Valley (and Sydney?)

“Here is a little village; in ten years it will be a great city-in ten years the railroad will have taken the place of the stage coach, the electric light of the candle; it will abound with all the machinery and improvements that so enormously multiply the effective power of labor. Will in ten years, interest be any higher?” He will tell you, “No!” “Will the wages of the common labor be any higher…?” He will tell you, “No the wages of common labor will not be any higher…” “What, then, will be higher?” “Rent, the value of land. Go, get yourself a piece of ground, and hold possession.” And if, under such circumstances, you take his advice, you need do nothing more. You may sit down and smoke your pipe; you may lie around like the lazzaroni of Naples or the leperos of Mexico; you may go up in a balloon or down a hole in the ground; and without doing one stroke of work, without adding one iota of wealth to the community, in ten years you will be rich! In the new city you may have a luxurious mansion, but among its public buildings will be an almshouse.”

Irrepressible…unless Google decide not to pay for it.

  34. ralph

Polanyi had it right – when capitalism wrecks your community and or environment you say enough – no amount of blather about trickle down will do.

  35. Irrepressible?

The phoenix can fly only when its feathers are fully grown … with our thoughts we make the world … the nature of Monkey was irrepressible!

  36. Gab

It never ceases to amaze me that the belly-achers who whine about capitalism are beneficiaries of capitalism.

  37. Ed

    Oh my God.
    That’s serious stuff.

  38. the belly-achers who whine about capitalism…

buy their “Guy Fawkes” masks online—to the huge profit of Amazon (the world’s largest online retailer) and Time Warner (the world’s largest media conglomerate.)

What would they do for work if not for these techies?

    Ahhh, the memories.

  41. Mr Rusty

Greetings. Your neighbor at a man named Kevin Rose. is a Jewish parasite. Perhaps not of you, but of us. This is why we are here to reveal him for what he is.
As a partner venture capitalist Jew at Google Ventures, Kevin directs the flow of capital from Google into the tech startup bubble that is destroying San Francisco. The start-ups that he funds bring the swarms of young Jews that have ravaged the landscapes of San Francisco and Oakland.

With each new tech corporation comes a wave of fresh Jews, who on average earn four times more than a normal service worker. We are the ones who serve them coffee, deliver them food, suck their cocks, watch their kids, and mop their floors. Nearly all of these Jews are just like Kevin Rose and we are tired of this miserable and untenable situation.

Just substituted a few words here and there and hey presto!
History repeats itself, particularly when the perpetrators try and pretend it was someone else whodunnit and that they are the noble, peaceful, moral crusaders merely trying to make the world a better place…again.

  42. brc

Mr rusty, nailed it. I did this to someone on another blog recently and they completely missed the point.

  43. Papachango

jaysus – the stuff that gets dragged up here! Gonna have the song in my head for days now…

…though to me it always sounded like ‘irepressm’

  44. Watch them howl about “freedom of speech” when a few of them get dragged in and charged with extortion.

If it gets too messy, we will find out the hard way whether a tech nerd can outshoot a cockgobbler with a liberal arts degree.

  45. Blogstrop

We are starting to see the baby boomer hump go past. Those over 40 are now suddenly finding a young amount of youngsters making vastly more $$$ and not stuck in dead end unionized government/council jobs.

Mundi, you do realise that blaming the boomers for everything is an admission of failure in itself? Or perhaps you are doing a bit of what many here see as parody, a la Hammy.

  46. churat

There is definitely a culture war going on in San Francisco against the tech community. It looks to be driven by the post-modern hard left. The following is a good example:

Setting aside the question of whether this brand of “smart” is broadly helpful to an organization (more on that later), the lived experience of class, race, gender, gender identity and expression, sexuality, and ability factors greatly into whether or not someone fits that mold. Someone enculturated to be deferential is not going to readily point out their insights even if they have them. This includes those raised with the ideal that being smarter or more quick-witted than your peers is undesirable and unattractive – like most raised female in our society. It includes those whose interactions with authority figures from an early age are predominantly negative – like most people of color, particularly African Americans and Latin@s, whom our police and school systems treat with fear. It includes those who grow up poor, who must blend in to survive, as not having the right clothes or parents with the right jobs are not things to call attention to. It includes those with a non-normative gender identity and expression, where any attention is negative attention. And it ultimately excludes people from any culture where this eagerness to be quick-witted is seen more as obnoxious and immature than as clever.

  47. Watching It Unfold

Yeah….and after Communism comes civil war, and the destruction of civilisation – which leads to a rebuild and an opportunity for hard working Capitalists and business types (free of bugs and parasites). Commies gotta eat too !

  48. Chris

Ah, that would be the techies who work their bums off programming to 2am in the morning who don’t have time to cook dinner and so are buying their takeaways from the normal service workers.

Any half decent job for a techie will have free food for their employees 24/7! And will often handle other misc general life tasks for them.

For me, the letter drop about Kevin Rose is more about the gentrification of San Francisco and its effects on the rents for service workers rather than the success of the geeks moving to San Fran. It just happens that because the people mostly come from a particular occupation or background, they are easily targeted.

    Totally agree.

It can create enormous wealth for investors and founders. More often than likely this isn’t the case. Investments by Angels/Investors are spread to find that one company that exits or lists for a return amongst the startups that don’t.

For the techies for a quite a few years (since the 2000 at least) working at startups has been about buying lottery tickets. Which is why you see so many of them in the US work at at a startup just long enough to vest a few shares before moving on to the next startup. It’s considerably harder these days though mainly because the investors are changing the way they value startups and the changes in US tax laws around stock options (Australian laws have always been a bit sucky). I worked for a startup for a year and it was the craziest year of my life. By the end I had a new appreciation of how its possible to burn millions of dollars a month (“burn rate” is such an accurate term!).

    Mk50 of Brisbane,

You were being generous with your assesment of the culture evidenced in the S.F. link. Cockroaches have more culture than these vile examples of maleness,

  54. Max

If you have Lefty parasites in your life that believe that the only way to get more money is to take it away from someone else I really recommend this book

Every dollar you earn is a certificate of appreciation from your customers. Kevin Rose et al deserve them.

  55. There is, BTW, another version (possibly the original) of the poem that opens this post:

    “Naturalist, observe the flea
Has smaller fleas which on him prey
And these have smaller still to bite ‘em
    And so proceed ad infinitum.”
