Private action at the ABC

The opening line from Janet Albrechtsen’s column this morning struck a chord:

MONDAY night, a bunch of rude and rowdy university students in the audience of Q&A ambushed the ABC panel show, causing the broadcaster to pull the program from the air.

Like that’s a bad thing. Conservatives have been calling on the ABC, and the government, to pull that program for years.

Lets me guess…. they were protesting for a 100% free government run uni and no hecs.

  2. Robert O.

It seems that Q&A has never achieved a balance off left versus right with neither the panel nor the audience; about 3:1 in my opinion. The last episode just only reinforces its inherent bias.

  3. I’m perplexed as to why anyone watches it. I have much better things to do.

  4. nic

Its interesting how some of the points conservatives have been making about the composition of the audience and the ABC’s agenda, have recently been proven to be correct. The fact they had the same audience member chosen twice on separate shows to ask questions of the Government is beyond a sham.

  5. John Labaj

More of a concern to me was that Anna Burke appeared to be under the influence of alcohol or substance.

  6. A Lurker

The last episode just only reinforces its inherent bias.

We recognise bias; the ABC (caught in Leftist group think) honestly believes that their irrational and lop-sided world is both normal and natural, and cannot understand, recognise or comprehend that bias exists within their own organisation.

  7. Baldrick

I’m still waiting for the ABC’s fact checking unit to tell me whether students have the right to protest on a nationally broadcast television programme on taxpayer funded television, before I comment.

  8. Milton Von Smith

Notwithstanding the excellent comments of Pyne and Roskam, the content of Q&A improved considerably when the professional student agitators took over.

And they made Jones look like the impotent goose he really is.

Let’s sack Jones, return his exorbitant salary to taxpayers, and let the Stalinist students take over the show. It’s “their ABC” anyway.

  9. Baldrick

More of a concern to me was that Anna Burke appeared to be under the influence of alcohol or substance.

Watch this video of Anna Burke and you’ll discover she always talks like a space-cadet.

have been calling on the ABC, and the government, to pull that program for years.

Why stop at one program? Pull them all.

The stuff they have on is unwatchable crud anyway. Like the traditional 7:30 pm Sunday slot which was the home of excellent David Attenborough docos. Now they have a home renovation thing which is stupid and has been done to death by the commercial channels. Their programming makes channel Ten look good.

I don’t know what they spend their $1.2 billion on. Must be all those overpaid ALP pollie spouses they employ.

  12. J.H.

Bunch of idiots protesting about the cost of education….. and when you look at their argument it boils down to this.

“Education should be FREE”……. Which is really code for…… “We don’t want to pay for our own higher education, everybody else should have to pay for it for us”

It’s bluddy amazing really. Here we have young adults who never really graduated Kindergarten, telling the rest of us that we must continue to pay for them like children….. and when they do graduate from Kinder-university, they all want to join the public service or become “scientists” and live off the government science grant gravy train and promote the ecofascism that goes with it.

Cradle to grave tit sucking and we all have the privilege of paying for it……… Sniveling little shits should go and learn a trade and be useful for a change.

  13. Ant

The people who watch this program have guts of steel.

I do try occassionally but find totally nauseating the hooting and hollering from the hard left audience for pretty much any old bromidian nonsense uttered by the overwhelmingly hard left panel.

  14. Oh come on

I’m perplexed as to why anyone watches it. I have much better things to do.

Extremely pleased to hear it, Senator-elect :D

I know you’re just one body in a chamber of 76, but the weight of expectations on your shoulders just got a helluva lot heavier over the past week…

The fact checking unit have been hard at it and have discovered there is no budget crisis, Hockey is making it all up to make winning the next election harder for themselves or something…

Chris Bowen says Joe Hockey has doubled the deficit by changes to Government spending and changes to Government assumptions. ABC Fact Check finds his claim checks out.

Bet you never saw that one coming eh?

  23. Oh come on

    It’s true. Here’s the standard Q&A lineup:

    An ALP/Greens pollie – left

A coalition pollie – usually centrist, sometimes conservative

A media representative – 70-80% chance of being leftist*

A think tank representative – 70-80% chance of being leftist*

An entertainer or activist of some description – 90% chance of being leftist*

    * one of these is usually at least nominally and sometimes genuine conservative/small government type

  24. Natural Instinct

I’m perplexed as to why anyone watches it.

David, Dot, Winston et al – I surprised with your bewilderment.
    .
    – I am baffled that you do not show an interest in the Q&A show, as it is a leading product of the News & Current Affairs department of the ABC, which along with 700 News, 730 Report, Lateline and 4 Corners can set an agenda, or form opinions, in public discourse.
    – I am confounded that you do not want to examine how the ABC meets its charter (its justification for public funding) and does not become a vehicle for pushing one strand of political thought, because if it does that leads down an Orwellian road.
    – I am mystified that you are not keen to view the programs that represent a hefty swag of the ABC’s “Australian” content – another justification for public funding.
    – Finally, I am puzzled that you do not wish to see how your taxes are spent – just for interest sakes, like looking at new $20m road, every week.

  25. Bruce of Newcastle

Speaking of the Nazi zombies of Q&A there’s a fine double feature on SBS 2 tonight: Iron Sky followed by Dead Snow. Now why can’t the ABC with all their billions do something innovative like SBS seems to manage on the smell of a garlic deodorizer?

I can add that SBS showed Jade Warrior a few months ago, which is a Finnish-Chinese movie by the guy who produced Iron Sky. Jade Warrior was a fine story and held me riveted all the way.

I vote to keep SBS. They can have the ABC’s tech stuff after they’re defunded and their sites are treated with arsenic and plutonium to keep it from being reoccupied by lefties.

  26. Oh come on

PS “it’s true” was referring to

The Charge: ABC is Biased to the Left.

  27. Oh come on

I assume that the ABC’s presumption is that the media representative is objective, so they claim 2 left, 2 right and an unaffiliated.

Of course, anyone who’s watched the show knows what a lie this is. The balance is generally 3.5 – 1.5 in favour of the left.

  28. Natural Instinct

    back to normal programming…..
David Marr must have a very good agent or network.
He gets on 15% of the Insiders programs, he gets free time on ABC radio to push his essays, and now he pops up again on Q&A.
I do not think he is such an important public intellectual, but obviously many producers at the ABC do.

  29. jupes

Sharman Stone called Abbott a liar when he resisted the SPC extortion attempt.

    A garden variety leftist, IOW.

  32. john constantine

the abc are backing sharman stone to the hilt–the abc dream is that they can sweet talk stone into running as the abc backed socialist independent against the tories at the next election.

with the full weight of abc regional praising her and bagging the tories relentlessly over her electorates most dominant media presence, it isn’t an impossible abc fantasy.

  33. john constantine

does anybody thing that the abc will gotcha sharman stone over the hysterical [now proven wrong] allegations she was making over the abc/spc/coca cola/david gonski gotcha attack on the great abbottbeast?.

Finally, I am puzzled that you do not wish to see how your taxes are spent – just for interest sakes, like looking at new $20m road, every week.

Thats a great way of putting it. Politicians really need to put things in context when trying to put a case to the Australian public. Most peoples eyes just glaze over when they mention a billion bucks. Barnaby has tried it at times, but executed it poorly when bumbling around trying to explain it in terms of how many hundreds of millions.

  38. Senile Old Guy

    Clementine Ford at the Drum:

After a group of students blasted Education Minister Christopher Pyne with questions about deregulation of tertiary education (while the government floods money into the purchasing of unnecessary fighter jets), they broke into a loud and wonderfully obnoxious protest which only ceased when security escorted them from the premises.

I’m not putting the link. If you want to read the tripe, you can find it yourself.

  40. .

There will be a budget crisis when my message gets through and people legally minimise and resist taxes, screwing down their payments, maximising their claims and minimising revenue for the Commonwealth.

That little fuckwit Rudd illegally collected excise tax and got away with it. How he did so without being run out of town by pitchfork and torch bearing peasants is beyond me.

  41. Mr Rusty

Perhaps she is always on substance?

Pat Michaels informed us at the Friedman conference that it is fairly common for people to take beta blockers when appearing on TV for extended interviews or panel discussions. I expect this method of calming nerves extends to other legal pills such as Xanax.

  42. I vote to keep SBS.

Bruce of N., there is wonderful innovation called the DVD which allows those who like watching movies to watch them in the comfort of their own homes, whenever they list, by way of relatively inexpensive machines called DVD-players. Many thousands of good movies—even foreign films!—are available for hire or purchase in shops and on-line.
There is, accordingly, no need for you to rely on the massively overpaid SBS programmers for your movie-watching entertainment.

    Admit it, you’re just perverts.

  45. Bruce of Newcastle

I am glad you think that taxpayers should fund your rather, er unique, taste in movies.

SBS takes in advertising dollars. This is the nice thing about them: if they go any more feral all that’s required is to up the external funding requirement to 100%.

I would have no problem with Q&A attracting sponsorship from all sorts of fine lefty organisations (ie the ones not skint, if there are any), so long as my tax dollars don’t pay for them.

And anyway why aren’t Nazi zombies better than Q&A, Insiders or the ABC news? Each is just as silly. You don’t believe me, try watching the commercial channel equivalents.

  46. Infidel Tiger

There’s plenty of free p0rn sites on line Bruce. Most of the stars are foreign babes if that’s what you’re after.

  47. Bruce of Newcastle

Infi, today’s Tuesday. Tuesday night is slasher movies. You’ve got your genres mixed up. On the ABC Tuesday is tofu day. Every day is tofu day on the ABC. Very expensive shit-flavoured green tofu.

That’s a great way of putting it. Politicians really need to put things in context when trying to put a case to the Australian public.

I really do not think the voters do not get the existential differences between operational costs and capital investments.
My little $20m road above gets built every week, and gets $86m longer every month. And next year, and for 20 years thereafter, it will be still there – building the nation and expanding the economy and all that good stuff.
The ABC’s funding will be effectively pissed up against a wall, day-after-day, and there will be nothing to show for it next year. That is why in private companies headcount (or total labour costs to wage inflation, capture contractors and consultants) is monitored so closely – otherwise it just grows and grows and grows, for no benefit.
    .
P.S. Just looked at HWA annual report, $220m per annum to make the state employed health professionals better trained. 130 staff giving away the grants, year-after-year-after-year and no road to show for it.

  52. harrys on the boat

Clementine Ford will come out soon as one of the most superb Alene Composta type plants we’ll ever see. She comes across as so mentally ill, such a lefty retard, that she can only have been invented by some liberty loving genius.

  53. JC

She’s pretty decent value, Harry. In fact I’d rate her well above mad Betty in the lunacy stakes. The Clemster is an inverted version of a national living treasure with tramp stamps. I’m trying to find out if she has painted any more and where.

  54. Pyrmonter

JC – SBS have been doing travel (Coast) English history (various series about royals, music and what not) and war history docos (especially the oeuvre of Joachim Fest) on Friday nights for years. Do keep up.

  55. Wallace

    Please keep the ABC.
Concentrate their Camp of mutual agreement in the one little box with a barb wire fence around it and we can all get on with our lives and they can get on with their mutual destruction program and no one will miss them.

  56. Tom

These arseholes think we can be endlessly lied to about how they encourage the gaming of the Q&A audience vetting system. ABC Director of TV Richard Finlayson:

He added that one of the concerns for the ABC was that the event could affect the perception of the balance in Q&A audiences. In a survey of the voter intentions of the audience that night, 47 per cent were Coalition, 38 per cent ALP, 9 per cent Greens and the rest were unspecified.

  57. Gab

In a survey of the voter intentions of the audience that night, 47 per cent were Coalition, 38 per cent ALP, 9 per cent Greens and the rest were unspecified.

It’s just amazing how those numbers appear across the screen every single show. Truly, it’s such an awesome coincidence.

Who rents DVD’s anymore? Download (legally) and never leave the comfort of home. Unfortunately, the SBS is starting to repeat its movies.
