McCloskey v Piketty on the inequality of wealth

The last string in the socialist bow is inequality. Thomas Piketty’s tedious Capital in the Twenty-First Century has for no reason you can think of been taken up by the left, no reason other than desperation since there really is nothing left to criticise capitalism for other than its refusal to bring perfection to every facet of life. Here is the great Deirdre McCloskey, an American economist, last in Melbourne in December to watch the test against the English, providing her own answer. For a longer discussion of this now much discussed book – you cannot find a copy on the shelf anywhere in Melbourne – you can read this. But it is this issue that will sandbag any right-side party that cannot offer Obamaphones in your box of corn flakes.

Piketty’s solution? A global tax of the rich and total taxes of 80%. We couldn’t see that one coming.

About a decade ago the Left was bullshitting on about da equality of opportunity. Now it’s straight out thieving.

  2. 2dogs

Piketty’s prescriptions for dealing with inequality are even worse.

    Extreme statism.

Then again, it is a hallmark of the left that they seems incapable of supporting any solution to the problems they seek to solve that is not massively inefficient.

Equality can be obtained cheaper than our current welfare states using John Roemer style approaches, but you will never hear the Left support them.

Ultimately, that’s because a John Roemer approach involves taking personal responsibility.

Something the Left isn’t big on.

  3. Blogstrop

If the RuddGillardGreen six years of imposing inefficient and misguided policies taught the populace anything, it should be never to vote Labor again. But I fear that lesson hasn’t been learned, not even here at el gato.

Standard European solution – the way to resolve the malaise which has locked in that continent is to force the rest of the world into a similar malaise.

It is always the same old tired ideas repackaged for those too slow to learn from every over attempt the Europeans made to hold back the rest of the world like they attempted with the Glow-ball Warming scam, etc.

Pickety might learn more if he left Paris.

    Not much chance of that.

As commenters at the Spectator link point out,
    a) arguments against inequality are driven by envy
    b) inequality is impossible to fix in this imperfect world

But boy, oh boy there are some highly judgemental types over there! :-)

    For example:

We’ll just conveniently forget that the vast majority of Bill Gates’ wealth was obtained immorally and illegally.

    Brilliant!

The standard European solution appears much more successful than that of the Home of the Free which has the highest incarceration rate in the world, and a firearm fatality rate twenty times that of comparable countries, to look at just two significant measures.
The USA is a dangerous and sick place.
    It’s not the model.

  11. Alfonso

‘firearm fatality rate’……take out black on black firearm murders and the US firearm homicide rate halves.
Shows to go you what bad immigration “choices” will do for a country, unlike Jo’burg of course.

At least the US lock up its criminals instead of letting them loose to offend again, again and again.

    Inequality is a ridiculous complaint.

It probably stems from the false notion that there is a finite amount of wealth in a nation that has to be distributed.

If someone earns $100 and another earns $50 and the first bloke increases his earnings by $100 and the second bloke increases his earnings by $20, then the inequality has increased but both are better off.

What is there to complain about?

Rick what is this “discipline ” you speak of? Is it following the “Pardee Line”,backstabbing ones “colleagues” for advancement ,taking bribes and stealing to attain financial equality with those fools who actually pay taxes? Consult the “Alp/Green/ Fascist Handbook” .has anyompne ever heard of a retired lefty pollie who is impoverished? I dont think there has ever brpeen one.

  16. Token

It probably stems from the false notion that there is a finite amount of wealth in a nation that has to be distributed.

Check out the socialist hell holes of North Korea, Cuba, Venezuela, and the other failing states in central & south America (as happened in the states terrorised by the Soviet Union).

Once the leftards squander all public resources, they lock up their populations and wealth becomes a diminishing resource.

what bad immigration “choices” will do for a country,

The First world is flooded with Multimillionaire “African” sports and music stars.

But you never see them doing anything about the situation in Africa or much charity work at all. Many of these “rappers” call themselves “Business men” and “Moguls” but they arn’t even setting up African import/export businesses with simple items like basic school and medical supplies, indoor plumbing, electricity generators, basic building supplies>>>????

Why not? because they dont give a fuck thats why!

Not withstanding that the Gates examples is complete tosh, a better example is the wealth of the Kennedy clan, or, closer to home, the sudden recent wealth of Gillard. We might even examine Keating’s financial rise … or many others that emerged from the Union swill.

  20. Rococo Liberal

Equality is not the last string on the leftists’ bow, it is the only string.

Everything in the whol;e leftist outlook is based upon their schoolyard understanding of ‘fairness.’

It started with the 19th century socialists and was knocked down several times since. In days of old they tried very hard to put an intellectual spin on their babyish theories. But then the Wall came down in 1989. We all saw that the leftist emperor had no clothes.

What to do? Folk marxism is the answer. Get completely taken up with ‘discrimination” and group rights. See every human relationship in terms of opression by the privileged over the disadvantaged. Throw in Climate Change too, just to prop up collective ideology.

That’s why we now have so much pathological altruism in the world. The left think that intervention in people’s lives by government will make things better. Of course, a sensible person can see straight away that this is not the case.

The saddest result of all is that Government is eating up what Lord Moulton called the Third Desmene, that area between law and personal freedom in which the mass of people understood what was right and acted accordingly. So we get to the stage now where the idiots of the left can’t abide the idea of repealing 18C because they can’t believe that people’s behaviour can be restrained by anthing other than the bluntest of laws. This of course then leads to a dminution of respect for the law. It also leads to the idea that anything is OK, as long as it isn’t against the law.

Bill Gates is a good example:

He was a complete selfish monopolistic prick for most of his career. and his mums board positions and influence at IBM helped him along enormously

And in response the marketplace simply moved away from MS at the earliest possible opportunity.

Users / the market promptly developed Linux and IOS devices (they are both closely related) and Gates was caught flat footed by the internet/open software/mobile app revolutions and 25 years later MS is still out of touch with the market.

’ What’s perhaps even more puzzling is how the Yanks and Brits are lapping up a book from a Frenchman that sharply criticises the US and UK as the worst cases of inequality run riot…

Devons nous faire ce commentaire tout en Français.

  27. Dr Faustus

Piketty focusses narrowly on income disparity at the margin to find his problems with capital. And his data shows that after a century of conflict and socialism, personal income disparity is now back at late 19th Century levels – with the 1% living richly as ‘super-managers’ and rentiers.

He somehow fails to analyse the improvement in the standard of welfare between a non-rentier, non-supermanager, 99%-er living in 1890 and today. Better food, better health, longer lives, a cleaner safer living environment, less drudgery and more leisure opportnities – more opportunity to progress to be a super-manager or rentier.

He also misses the point that the wealth and technological development that has created this windfall improvement in welfare has been generated by capital – whether, or not owned by rentiers. And not a penny by government.

Hardly a surprise that he has become a fanboy for the flabby.

  28. Max

Yes, indoctrinate with a secular religion to instill fear and guilt and justify redistribution. AGW is the new collection plate.

  29. They come from socialist hell holes that practice the type of politics followed with ignorance by numbers.

    Except they don’t.
61% originate in Mexico which has a centrist government.
8% from the Philippines, South Korea, China and India – a few “socialist” governments here – a few not.
14% from El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Brazil and Ecuador.
So in reality, proximity, standard of living and accessibility have much more than “Socialism” to do with illegal immigration to the USA.
But never let a bullshit meme get in the way of reality – it will destroy your Glibertarian fantasy.

  30. Mr Rusty

Hard work, innovation and discipline is the root cause of inequality of wealth.

  31. Mantaray

Numbers (8.23am) makes the interesting comment that US Gun Fatalities are higher than “comparable countries”. Problem is that there are no comparable countries.

Deliberate Homicide Rates in the US are about 3-4 times those of most western European nations, or ANZ, or Canada etc. However Deliberate Homicide Rates are about 5-10 times higher in Africa and Sth/Central America than in the US. Examples; NZ 1.7 per 100,000 population, US 4.8 per hundred thousand, Brazil 27, Jamaica 52, All Central America 28, All Western Africa 15, All Southern Africa 30 etc etc.

Of course, what makes the US not comparable to most other wealthy countries is the very high % of people of African and Sth/Central American origin in it’s population, which are extremely violent societes (see the figures).

In effect Numbers is pointing out that Blacks and Hispanics are violence-crazed nutters wherever you find them, which the figures confirm. As Numbers is usually a teat-sucking lefty apologist, I’m not sure why he’s brought the evil disposition of Blacks and Hispanics to our attention, but maybe (Ed: Maybe??) he just ain’t too bright.

  32. b) inequality is impossible to fix in this imperfect world

Precisely. The left celebrate diversity in everything except wealth.

Never mind that they are the result of the same thing. Even arguing about such causes does not separate wealth from economies, culture, geography, environment or whatever else one wishes to point to as the causes of such diversity. When the emotion is removed from the argument, all that is left is envy.

  33. In effect Numbers is pointing out that Blacks and Hispanics are violence-crazed nutters wherever you find them, which the figures confirm.

I’m pointing out that lunatic gun laws, a symptom of a sick greed-driven materialistic society (just as much as incarceration rates) are responsible for 12042 gun deaths since Newtown.

So they are coming and not going, numbers admits.
What numbers wants to call centrist others would call corrupt socialist hell holes.
Is Greece socialist to you, or just suffering from socialist policy with a lazy, socialist public service, and big government dependant population?
Still , the fact admitted by numbers, they leave in droves,to get to the land of the free(at least more free than theirs) and typically numbers wants to redifine the classification to suit his argument.
Many also leave Australia and desperately try to get a green card and live in the states.
We have a liberal government, but it doesn’t mean that Australia isn’t now suffering from socialist policy and a socialist attack on it’s institutions.
So numbers, what you want to see, you see. What you don’t , you won’t.
U S A is now also deteriorating due to the same problem.
It however, due to it’s strength from being so free market in the past, making it the most powerful country in the world, is still massively more attractive to people who live under corruption and socialist policy.

  38. Everything in the whol;e leftist outlook is based upon their schoolyard understanding of ‘fairness.’

My 10 year old is always crying unfair, and I always point out to her that her idea of unfairness is anyone having more than her. I haven’t gotten through to her yet, but she is a child and I don’t expect her to not have childish views. I do, however, expect her and her views to grow up. There is no excuse for adults to behave in such a way.

And also, as a side note, I realise why socialists tend to be wealthy but still socialist. It is because there are still other people in this world that have more than they do. It’s just so unfair, I tells ya!!

This is all I have to say on the matter.

mind the gap – the daddy model of wealth

If wealth generating is a skill like any other human skill, why wouldn’t we expect someone to be 100 times better at it than most other people. If tiger woods is 100 times better at golf than me, why wouldn’t bill gates be 100 times better at making money? If that is true, why would we think it is a bad thing, or worse, try to stop him?

  42. struth

The segregation of people into boxes, practiced by the left, in it’s true racist existence, has more to do with the violence in the states than is recognised. Just the same as with our aboriginal population here, the voilence in those communities is astounding. They believe they are victims as they have been told by the left. The left are desperate to find victims to free market capitalism, at a terrible cost to these communities as the sense of being a victim , being told you won’t get anywhere as you are discriminated against, and then the resultant behaviours that follow have terrible and violent consequences.

This implies that inequality is a bad thing. I think it isn’t.

Precisely. The left celebrate diversity in everything except wealth.

They don’t celebrate diversity they’re just always on the lookout for more agregious sources of victimhood.

When the emotion is removed from the argument, all that is left is envy.

Envy is a highly emotional experience (I imagine) so, with your indulgence Beer, I’ll revise your sentence.

“When emotion is removed from the argument, there is no argument”. That pretty much sums up the Left.

  44. Fibro

It continues to strike me that most people of her ilk are actually mentally challenged. Not that they don’t have brains, clearly they do, but why is it that the people that complain about inequality are those that are also inthe supposed 1% that she would no doubt be?

Insane person: Had nothing, worked to get something and then complains about the system that got them there.

Steve Price had a very telling phone call last night.

The caller objected to all Price & Bolt had noted, then when ask to explain her objections, hysterically fell into a rant about how she was treated as a 7 year old. She did let slip she was institutionalised by her family, but glazed over the events while pushing blame on everyone else.

It was clear she was a very damaged 60+ soul, but strangely built her reasoning on why she never achieved and was entitled to welfare which must not be revoked back to those arcane events.

    Bog standard lefty really.

Numbers (10.40am). I’m interested to read the advice you would give any Soccer fan (or Carnival fan) planning a trip to Brazil. Likewise your opinion on the Aussie Cricketers contemplating yet another West Indies tour gig. Gun Homicides; US 3.6 per 100,000 pop; Brazil 18.1 per hundred thousand; Jamaica 39.4 per hundred thousand.

OK, so Jamaica has eleven times the gun murders of the US; Brazil five times. Is it because these countries have eleven and five times the “symptom(s) of a sick greed-driven materialistic society” as the US.

C’mon Numbers. Tell us what you reckon.

  49. Andrew

How’s the stats in the DR Congo, Mantaray? That’s a one-party paradise of the kind so idolised by certain communist scum. Presumably much less gun violence (and also less rapey) than the US I would think? Terrific equality too no doubt.

61% originate in Mexico which has a centrist government.

Here’s a link outlining the strengths and weaknesses of Mexico, IMHO he’s done a pretty good job as a summary:

    http://www.mkeever.com/mexico.html

I’ll just make an even tighter summary, only looking at all the bad points, you might want to note how similar these are to the same things Libertarians bring up on a regular basis:

    3. Corrupt police force — “many government employees do not follow the rules and that is where the corruption comes from”

    5. Little respect for private property — “There is a lot of piracy in Mexico.”

    9. Poor education, even after government tips a lot of money in.

    12. Open borders encouraging poverty in nearby nations to spill across the border.

    21. Government deeply in debt to foreign interests.

    24. Minimum wage set at unrealistically high levels forcing people to work illegally.

    25. Poor environmental protection.

    32. Government connected nepotism — “Mexico is pretty much ruled by a few extremely wealthy families who are either business owners or leaders in government enterprises who are not there for their own achievement but because their families have been working there and their father or mother left the position for them.”

    33. Corruption in the military — “The military system is overruled by the famous “mordida” which is a “bite” which is translated to corruption, a “bit of money” you give money to the military and they might just let you by with thousands of dollars worth of drugs.”

So the biggest issue by far is corruption, and the biggest center of corruption rotates around government (police, military, and regulation of business). Now go take a look at a socialist country, do you see equality, or do you see a corrupt elite ruling it as a fiefdom? Take a look at North Korea, well the Big Kim does look better fed than 99% of his countrymen. Take a look at Uzbekistan and their socialist government, equality? Look at the history of Chairman Mao and his personal privilege, or the difference between party members in the Soviet states vs non party members.

Corruption and socialism go hand in hand, you would be young and naive to think otherwise.

  69. rickw

Rick what is this “discipline ” you speak of?

Fiscal discipline, saving hard and spending wisely.
Personal discipline, not doing stupid stuff.

    That was a good read.
I’ve often wondered what would happen if the impossible were possible and the left achieved their fabled ekwalidee. If everyone had the same income, same standard of living, same acreage of land etc. Would the left be satisfied? Not bloody likely. They would soon turn their attention from material equality to natural equality. Genetic inequality would become the new cause. Just how would they deal with issues such as some people being better looking than others? Or why some people live longer? What about those people who can eat anything they want and never get fat? Or kids who learn faster than others? What about poor eyesight, asthma, down syndrome, dwarfism, port stained birth marks, autism, baldness, bearded women, retardation??? Would people be crippled, undergo “uglification” to ensure they are not favoured because they look like Brad Pitt or Miranda Kerr, would smart kids be punished, would people be euthanised after a certain age?
In every variant of Socialism those deemed to have a perceived “unfair” advantage or not living up to a certain standard have been expelled, punished or killed off. I expect that this contemporary variant would seek to expel, punish or kill those who did not have the right thoughts and beliefs – Global Warming, multi-culti, the oh so beloved compassion (lack of head tilting would be considered a genetic abnormality) and anyone who prefers logic over feeling. Ask a lefty just where they would stop in their futile quest for equality, it is quite revealing.

On the other hand, you’re drawing attention to your own stark racism.

Now there’s one whale of a self-beclowning. Numbers, you do that every time you post. Thanks for agreeing with me that you regard yourself as a proud racist. Just like every other socialist.

  72. .

    Piketty is FUCKING INSANE.

Why on earth MUST the growth rate of the economy and profits not only correlate, cointegrate and in the medium and long term, equalise?

He is basing an entire fucking theory on this solipsistic nonsense.

He is a mentally deficient crank. In a just society, he’d spend his days ranting from a sopabox in urine soaked dungarees.

  73. coz

Trannies like McClosky have no credibility. He is a deluded autogynephile.

  74. coz

This is from Donald’/Dierdre’s own site…
The total cost of her transformation to date comes to about $90,000, far higher than average because she had so much cosmetic surgery and voice surgery, together with surgeries to repair those surgeries. Travel between Iowa and Dallas (electrolysis), San Francisco (cheek and jaw surgery), Philadelphia (voice operation) and Australia (genital replacement) in search of the best procedures also has to be factored in. A variety of wigs while she experimented with how to wear her own hair, the acquisition of an extensive wardrobe, do not come cheaply. Then there were legal fees as she untangled the web woven by her sister, and fees to the mental hospitals where she was held against her will. Despite having to overcome so many roadblocks and despite the outright failure of some of the cosmetic surgeries, Deirdre McCloskey is not bitter. Even rejection by her children is met with sorrow, not anger.

  75. Anne

Not sure what your point is with this post above, Coz.

She sounds like a hell of a girl to me.

My advice to you would be – live and let live.

  76. Anne

My advice to you would be – live and let live.

Alternatively, listen to what she is saying and stop thinking about what’s in her pants.

  77. coz

Well perhaps you could have offered Donald/Dierdre that same advice at the appropriate time, might’ve saved him his deluded narcissistic fetish. Men who seek to erase and replace real women – the ultimate misogynist fantasy. They aren’t ‘live and let live’ themselves, most of em want to kill women, Buffalo Bill style.

  78. Anne

Coz. Methinks thou protesteth too much.

“Deluded” (psychiatric disorder) “narcissistic” (personality disorder) “fetish” (sexually kinky). “…want to erase…women”????? You forgot ‘her Mother wears army boots!’ You’re taking crazy Coz. Get a grip on yourself.

Why do you have so much anger invested in this woman’s choices? On second thoughts, don’t answer that.

Hey, I totally support your right to be a bigot!

  79. Stalin’s butt-boy, Numbs the cowardly racist bigot:

Why do you accuse numbers of racism?

  80. Aristogeiton

    this woman’s choices

What woman? Do you mean Donald?

  81. Anne

Aristogeiton, if you tell me you’re a man, you’re a man. I don’t need to check or make my own assessment about that.

  82. Aristogeiton

What if I told you I was a potato?

  83. Anne

I would put ketchup on your head.

  84. coz

    Ketchup? Are you a yank?

more on the savage envy of women exhibited by most trannies…

  85. Anne

I’m not going to open your link Coz.

    You sound a bit unglued.

  86. Anne

Coz, repost it over on the new Forum, if you have the courage.

  87. Aristogeiton

What if I told you I was a pear trapped in the form of a potato? Frankly, putting tomato sauce on me is potatonormative.

  88. Tom

Anne, I hope you’ve noticed that the Cat, while not encouraging them, doesn’t discourage trolling by the demented and deranged. In that case, the only effective deterrent is to ignore them.

  89. Anne

    Thank you Tom. Sound advice.

    Is wasn’t immediately apparent.

  90. coz

You sound a bit unglued to me ‘anne’ – I guess you’re projecting. What is this ‘new Forum’ you think I should post on?

  91. coz

Is that the mean ole scawy scawy Open Forum, is that what you mean? ooooh I’d well gawrsh, please clarify?

  92. brc

mr rusty, glad someone took a break from responding to troll thread diversion and read the best essay on inequality of income on the net.

It’s unarguable. People are different. Some of those differences mean they create different value – perhaps by looks, as you note, or perhaps sports skills, or perhaps building companies. The easiest way to get rich in a free society is to create things people want, which gives the recipients higher value in their own life.

So we would expect to see inequality of income. Healthy civilizations and societies should have unequal incomes. If they don’t, it means the value creators are on strike (or have fled), or have had their riches stolen. So societies without inequality are operating inside the bounds of their maximum possible wealth creation possibilities. And yes, I include Australia in that group.

    Aussieute:

Why do you accuse numbers of racism?

A reasonable question that deserves a reasonable answer

Several reasons, among them relating to racist comments he made on Phillipines people being employed in rural Australian towns, that both national and international socialists are by definition racists (he’s an international socialist) and due to his absolute silence while (as Mr Rudd claimed on 2 September 2013 with his 1 death per 12 arrivals statements) his side of politics – the one that invented the White Australia Policy – slaughtered 4,200 non-white people at sea.

He never said one thing about that, except where he thought he could blame the deaths on someone other than his side of politics. To this day he blames Howard!

I have been very strident over that matter ever since that bloody-handed imbecile Rimmer destroyed Howard’s effective anti-people-smuggling policies in 2008. Why? I have helped pull way too many bodies from the sea in my time. They were people, not tokens in some sick and perverted political game, and who but a racist considers 4,200 south Asian, central Asian and middle-eastern people as mere tokens in a sick political game?

I believe that the left could not give a stuff about those deaths, because they were ‘just little brown people’ as I have overheard lefties describing them. The fundamentally evil Greenfilth ‘senator’ Sarah Heifer-Bong’s representative of all those bastards. When SIEV221 (now thought to have had about 150 people aboard) was wrecked at Christmas Island on 15 December 2010, that evil sow said ‘tragedies happen’ and that it was just too early to even discuss who might be to blame.

When that Iranian bloke was killed at Manus Island, she sang a very different song as she went off her fat stupid head screaming and wailing about how Abbottabbottabbott666 was to blame. Tell me that cold indifference to her policy killing ~100 people live on TV and her hysterical screaming about one death in custody does not reflect her innate racism? Numbers is exactly the same.

But the absolute proof is his open anti-semitism. He’s a strident supporter of any terrorist organisation that has ‘killing Jews’ as No.1 on it’s ‘to do today’ list. He vents these spittle-flecked rants at any action Israeli’s take to defend themselves from those who openly state their intent to kill them. Numbers hates the idea that Jews can defend themselves from those trying to kill them.

    Tell me that’s not anti-semitism.

I name him bigot as his anti-American bigotry is legendary here.

I name him coward due to his disgusting misogynist attacks on the cat’s ladies, and how he runs away and hides when people like me tackle him head-on.

Oh, Numbers is a racist, there’s no doubt about it. He’s never even bothered to deny it, to my knowledge. And he’s much worse than that, besides.

  94. Mk50 of Brisbane, Henchman to the VRWC

Oh, and just to make it clear. I do not hate Numbers although I do despise his racism.

What I feel for him is pity.

There is very little more despicable, more pathetic, and more pitiable, than a racist.
