I could have told Rove he’d fail in the US.

He has an annoying nasal voice and he’s just boring and not very funny.

He wanted to pull a Craig Ferguson, poor deluded fellow.

    Ferguson is talented.

    WTF?

Vatican calls for global ceasefire during World Cup final…

Why not for the Superbowl, the Ashes or the world series.

  3. Leigh Lowe

There is a woman who sits just down from our hotel and does Tarot readings.
She is enormously fat and wears a big red dress every day.
She smokes cigars, throws her walking stick at any pigeons which stray too close and then berates anyone who doesn’t fetch her walking stick and return it.
I think it is Bob Ellis’s twin sister.

    1. Does she wear a bowler hat
2 It probaly is bob ellis.
    3. it is probably bob ellis in drag

No bowler hat, but she wore a sort of beret thing made out of the same maroon velvet as her tent dress. I think the Bobster used to sport a beret from time-to-time and that is what brought him to mind.
That, along with the shitty attitude and unashamedly churning out false prophecies despite having a hit rate of less than 10%.

  4. Leigh Lowe

Vatican calls for global ceasefire during World Cup final…

It will be too much for Hamas if it goes to extra time and penalties.
But clearly the Brazilians are all devout Catholics and observed the cease-fire.
Failed to fire a fucking shot against either the real Krauts (7-1) or the Orange ersatz Krauts in the consolation final (3-0).

No Australian comedians have succeeded in the US since Paul Hogan. They’re just no good.

McManus’s U.S. TV series Riot (IMDb rating 3.7/10) was described as:

It’s a laugh a minute …. and not much else in the other 59 minutes
Two teams of celebrities compete in a number of challenges and games, including one on a huge set that tilts at 22 degrees and others that take place in complete darkness.

B grade host with B grade celebrities playing B grade challenges … what’s to like?

  7. 'S

What are the odds Thorpe will be on the project soon interviewed by Rove and “gay marriage” is the theme?

Other news, Warren Mundine set to sue Fairfax.

  8. No Australian comedians have succeeded in the US since Paul Hogan. They’re just no good.

    Not really.
The over-earnest Yanks take themselves too seriously.

    What time will you awaken

Five- thirty A.M. (known to the irreverent as Oh God, Thirty O’clock.)

Top of the morning to the Cats on this chilly Bastille Day.

The RC into sexual abuse has really jumped the shark with this episode, as Miranda Devine rightly highlights. But it is still getting way too much coverage compared to little or nothing about the TURC.

They’re running the Thorpe story for all it’s worth on Sunrise.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that… :)

Hi calli on this day are you suitably attired de riguer – smock and beret?

  17. Tintarella di Luna

    Ian Thorpe is gay?

Meh, what I really want to know is if he ever peed in the pool

  18. Bruce of Newcastle

I’m coming around to Thorpe’s position a little. If the rumoured amount he’s been paid is true then that would set him up pretty well. And a cathartic tell-all may help him by drawing a line under all the personal angst he seems to have.

Now all that is needed is for him to shut up and get on with enjoying his life.

Unfortunately he seems to be a media tart, so I suspect we’ll still be seeing him talking about this stuff in guest spots on the Circle when he’s 80.

$2.6 million — Amount in U.S. dollars Thorpe reportedly earns from sponsorships each year. He cultivated a large and enthusiastic fan base in Japan for his talent and good looks. Thorpe featured widely in Japanese advertisements, including promoting a sports drink called “Thorpedo” after his nickname.

If those figures are even ball park he’s doing OK. Japan pays alot for celebrity ads, plus he was doing Rolex ads a few years ago IIRC.

That RC into child sexual abuse is really taking the piss. Grilling Cuneen over sexual assault victims?

    She is nearly above reproach.

Commissioner McClellan was one of the three Appeals Court judges who threw her off that trial.
So here we have Cunneen, once chastised by McClellan for not being sufficiently detached from one victim, under fire in his witness box for not doing more to advance the claims of alleged victims in another case which wasn’t even hers to prosecute.
It’s hard to miss the irony.

    He’s a bloviating idiot.

  22. feelthebern

No Australian comedians have succeeded in the US since Paul Hogan. They’re just no good.

    Correct.

They are absolutely shithouse. This is reflected in their relative poverty.

TISM probably were more hunourous than the entire left wing swill of any Australian comedy festival.

“I’m fat and loud! Tim Tams! I once had sex with an attractive man but I can say he had a small dick! At least all men will be hot with global warming! The 1950s! Tonnee Yabbott hates da wymmyneses like me…TONNEE YABBOTT!”

That above is the brain fart which is Australian “comedy”.

Numbers reckons Americans take themselves too seriously.

This deluded fruit loop has never heard of Danny McBride, Jim Carey (yes an ex Canuck), Jerry Seinfeld, Larry David, Tina Fey, Melissa Mc Carthy…

That’s right, he’s a communist bigot who blames America for everything. Kind of like a Klansmen blaming blacks for everything.

A number of the best comedians are Jews. I don’t know what it is, but Jewish comedians have given us utter comedy classics. Mel Brooks and friends were lampooning the Nazis when such wounds would have been pretty raw.

  40. chippymick

Part of the reason that the humour of Paul Hogan crossed over to the US was the both cultures shared a comedic tradition of the ingenuous hero. Uncle Remus would have instantly understood ‘Crocodile Dundee’ for example.

We are not allowed to laugh at Rodney Rude or King Billy Coke Bottle anymore, because they are undeniably racist, sexist and every other ‘ist, however they are both at their best when they mine the same seam.

NSFW, obviously but try Rude and the Pelican Joke

    KBCB and the Goat Joke.

Because that would involve prostituting a poor woman in the Third World.

When is the feminist backlash against all of this genuine misogyny coming?

I mean, blokes with dicks wearing skirts and wanting to be called Mary and homosexuals using disadvantaged women like breeding sows.

Altogether now — Awwww how heteronormative — he wants kids — lovely sentiment — the world will conspire for Ian to have kids — like Paspaley pearls eh? little baubles to hang on your life, trinkets that will make him feel wonderful. The world C.L. is going to hell in a hand basket. I have never ceased loving anyone or loved anyone less for being homosexual, I couldn’t give a rat’s – but children have a right to a mother and a father and to know their mother and father simply because they are human (irrespective of the madness that has seized the world) — but there’s a little corner of the world that won’t go down that path

  46. Gab

Perhaps Ian Thorpe has a partner he wishes to introduce to the world very soon, and “have” children, and say they would like to get married but the government is stopping them. too cynical?

It occurred to me yesterday, after The Grand Announcement, that he may become the poster boy and spokesperson for gay “marriage” any day now.

  47. candy

The rot began not with Palmer but with Abbott’s lie about not increasing taxes.

No, C.L., it began with the co-payment and upping the retirement age and streamlining welfare.

  48. nic

It occurred to me yesterday, after The Grand Announcement, that he may become the poster boy and spokesperson for gay “marriage” any day now.

The logical disconnet on all this amazes me. I won’t go into ‘marriage’ as enough has been said. But having children? Where’s the foetus going to gestate? Put it in a box? Where do the ovaries come from? Where are the feminists?
    Dio Santo.

  49. brc

Jim Carrey is a comedy genius. The ‘Ewan Baxter gibberish scene’ with Steve Correll in Bruce almighty is side splitting stuff. I can’t help chuckling when I merely think about it. Carrey must be torture to work with, as you can see from out takes at then end of movies like liar Liar.

As for Rove, I wish him well. He is obviously on the side of all that is wrong – favouring a trendy metrosexual left view of the world and fawning over Kevin Rudd, but at least he went and had a go. That puts him much further up the respect tree than the chaser pack who just reinvent the same jokes and send invoices to the abc. Rove isn’t funny, of course, he got his break by not being 60 minutes.

It’s a shame that most Australian comedians nest in government largesse, starting at universities and seeking the abc path to fame. That’s what stifles their act and shelters them from developing an act that will actually sell. Any decent act will require 10,000 hours of stagecraft, not a quick path to an abc game comedy show by making lesbian jokes about yourself. That one that backed up for Adam hills in his short lived show was simply terrible.

  50. candy

So it is OK to be and act like an ignorant bad tempered peasant and stand over the staff as long as you are showing some fight?

The man hasn’t got a clue about Standing Orders, doesn’t appear to have read or understand what is written in the constitution, has no right to interfere with the operation of the Senate or yell at its staff and comes out with the most outlandish drivel only to change tack the next day and come out with some other outlandish drivel. Well, what an asset he is to the people of Australia.

Comment from the article about Palmer yelling at Senate staffer that he apparently accused of bias. But wow on the unconstitutional amendments, I can see Lambie et al huddling around coming up with you beaut amendments with no consideration of adminstrative costs to government and business, the clueless idiots.

  54. C.L.

The Australian Army will terminate Major Bernie Gaynor’s commission tomorrow. It is not difficult to see why. Gaynor has accused the army’s higher leadership of cowardice.

He has made the claim publicly, repeatedly, and in various forms. He has predicted the moral cowardice of the army’s leadership would inevitably lead to a complete waste of the service and sacrifices made by thousands of Australian military personnel in Afghanistan and Iraq.

This has not gone down well. On June 30, the chief of the Defence Force, General David Hurley, AC, DSC, on his last day in the job, wrote to Gaynor detailing why he was no longer fit to serve in the Army Reserve.

Is Hurley the one who has a cross-dresser as a speech-writer?

And Gaynor is no longer fit to serve?

2010: Sex-change soldier Bridget Clinch wants to keep serving in Australian Defence Force.

DEFENCE force chiefs have agreed to pay for the sex-change operation of a soldier who wants to return to her old job training Diggers …

Defence chief Angus Houston has ordered his troops to “manage ADF transgender personnel with fairness, respect and dignity . . . and ensure all personnel are not subject to unacceptable behaviour”.

  55. notafan

Thorpie probably thinks shouting from the roof tops, ‘I’m Gay I’m Gaaay” getting gay married and buying children is going to make everything all better.
    I think not.

  56. C.L.

Gaynor has the respect of all serious Catholics for being a lone voice criticising the poofters of the ADF top brass for allowing ADF personnel to participate in the Mardi Gras, which is notorious for vilifying the Catholic Church. As Coorey reports in the above link, he won that battle. But you just knew his cowardly superiors would make him pay for their humiliation.

I agree, and if I were religiously minded, I might also add something about Sodom and Gomorrah and the end days….

However since I’m not religiously minded I won’t, except to say that for the majority of species that exist, that have existed, and presumably will exist, nature intended both male and female involvement to create a baby, and that one or the other being missing from the equation means either no baby to begin with, or if later on, the child missing out on either fatherly or motherly involvement in their lives.

Also, in my opinion desiring children seems to be an incredibly selfish act by these people – they all the time seem to saying ‘me, me, me’ – but when you add children to the family mix, ‘me’ should immediately go out the window and children should become the highest priority.

It’s not relevant to this discussion, but, if we restrict this to “the majority of animal species”, this is more arguable than many would think. There are an awful lot of acts of animal reproduction that do not involve the fertilisation of an egg by a sperm. Google “parthenogenesis”, for example.

Also, in my opinion desiring children seems to be an incredibly selfish act by these people – they all the time seem to saying ‘me, me, me’ – but when you add children to the family mix, ‘me’ should immediately go out the window and children should become the highest priority.

Even those ‘baching’ such as ‘The Odd Couple’ seem to fall into heteronormative role play; Gays wishing to reproduce being slaves to our mammalian genes (sexual reproduction/role play), however much they may wish to deny it?

No its not. Its a religious issue. The equality of same sex and hetero sex civil unions are a liberty issue.

The initial reports from the Los Angeles Times described the massacre of almost 30 women in the Zayouna neighborhood of Baghdad as an an unsolved mystery: “gunmen in Iraq reportedly kill at least 30 in upscale Baghdad area”.

A group of armed men raided a building in the eastern Baghdad neighborhood of Zayouna, breaking into “a number of apartments and opening fire on the residents,” reported Sumariya television, a private pro-government channel.

Twenty-eight of the victims were women.

Police cordoned off the area. Initial investigations yielded no evidence about the identity of the killers, or the motive for the attack, Iraqi news reports said.

It was not long before a more sinister motive made itself plain. The murder site was a brothel. The gunmen came in order to kill every one in it and teach the world an Islamic lesson. “Police believe men using silenced weapons carried out the executions, before scrawling ‘this is the fate of any prostitution’ on one of the doors.

Bombing the crap out of a place never makes the people who inhabit it compliant.
Any number of historical examples (the London blitz, the fire bombing of Dresden, the carpet bombing of Cambodia are a few examples).
Having personally experienced someone lobbing HE at us (friendly fire incident) I can assure you that it does make you frightened.
But it also makes you angry. In my experience the anger is a much stronger emotion.
You have this very strong primal urge to beat the crap out of the people bombing you.
So now, the civilians in Gaza menanced by the bombing are very angry. They will want to retaliate.
No Israelis have been killed by the idiots shooting rockets – so common sense would suggest that air strikes are counter productive.

Notice how easily “Gay Marriage” has slipped from being about being “Marriage” to being about kids?

Because that’s what its always been about. Gays don’t like the current arrangement where the unrelated partner is classed as a mere step-parent and the actual mother or father of the child retains their right to access the child and the child retains their rights to know their parent. Often the “donor” parent capitulates to their conscience and wants to know their child, and as for the child any step parent knows how a child is about their “real” parents – even if they’ve never met one of them.
“Step parents” are necessarily classed as little more than strangers to the child by the state. Gays don’t like this, it shatters their illusion of being “normal”. They demand we all pretend the unrelated parent is a “real” parent, just like the actual parent, and that means using the state to ban the child from ever knowing who their parent is, erasing them off the birth certificate and the state banning the mother from accessing their child. It means ignoring a century of child access related family law – all created in response to thousands of heartbreaking cases of children being banned by supremely selfish parents from ever seeing their mothers and fathers, or young vulnerable mothers making rash and pressured decisions about giving up access to their children and the emotional pain that brings later wanting to know their children. Any step parent knows the inherent desire of a child to know even absent parents. Nothing fills that gap. Ever.

But as we see: the childs desires don’t even rate a mention in this.

So in a smokescreen of “marriage” gays are hoping that by being “married” they can then further coerce the state into giving them special laws and exemptions that give equal standing to “spouses” (aka step-parents) over the step-child without going through the necessarily difficult adoption process that hetero step-parents have to go through.

If the majority of australians in a majority of states say yes then I would be happy with that. The last thing I want is for politicians to make decisions of that nature on their own.
