Projecting much?

I have been receiving a lot of hate in the last few days. First following the repeal of the carbon tax – our progressive friends are hurting, having invested so much of their emotional energy in that policy. Then the post yesterday where I put up Ronald Reagan’s very forceful and inspiring response to the downing of KAL 007. I was challenged on twitter and later in the thread:

What a shocking and pathetic person you are Davidson. And holding a job in education, to boot.
The least problem with this is the dumb “relativity”. There is no comparison. Reagan’s words were for the Soviet State, which had just murdered people at a period when they were falling apart.

Today’s issues have nothing to do with ideology, Statism or anything else. Putin’s behaviour is political. Awful, but merely, pathetically political.

But what really boils my blood is your feeding of the grubpot. When I see comments that go to the race – the race – of the president of the US. At this, of all times!

People have died. This is not an entertainment for the student union.

Wow – anger management issues there.

All this points to the fact that our lefty friends are unused to dealing with defeat and disappointment. Lashing out and tantrums become the order of the day.

Mind you – the “lamentation of their women” that I’ve been receiving have come from individuals who otherwise appear to be male.

Whoever it was who was getting up you about “the race” of the POTUS may well have the opportunity to throw his support behind a likely candidate for the 2016 US elections. He is highly educated, well spoken, well presented and importantly he is also black. What may piss the pissed off twitterer off is that he is a Republican. But he is black…and an educated smart on to boot.

    Sinc,

I particularly enjoyed Greg Jericho foaming at the mouth, his lips dripping with moral indignation.

I struggled to make any sense of this post, Sinc – until I reflected on a few issues.
The first is about the view of the world expressed here. I presume you support it, it is your blog, after all.
I refer to the implicit view transmitted in most posts, viz that the world is simply divided (Left and Right) and that reality can only be expressed in a never ending war between these two understandings.
This world view is embedded in just about everything that sees the light of day here, and to oppose it is seen as heresy. The usual response to this heresy is abuse, usually couched in homophobia, bigotry and language referring to violence. Anyone (especially any male) who doesn’t follow this line has his/her sexuality drawn into doubt, and is told to f**k off.
    I ought to know.
I saw enough of this crap forty years ago to understand that it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy, and results in horrendous consequences, often for the innocent and defenceless – refer yesterday’s events involving pseudo-macho cossacks playing with deadly weapons to show how tough they are.
Isn’t it time you and your blog said goodbye to this pre-pubescent view of reality, and grew up?
There are more temper tantrums per square metre on this site than anywhere else on the web.

    Numbers, observe a proverb.

Fools’ words get them into constant quarrels; they are asking for a beating.

In other words, you ask for it.

  10. Megan

The Numberskull arrives on cue, beautifully demonstrates total inability to reason and sits back from the keyboard in a warm and spreading pool of his own bullshit to reflect on his own blinding brilliance. Simpleton.

I needed a bit of hilarity to start my day.

  11. Megan

And the witless commentator Sinc has quoted is of exactly the same ilk. I am good, you are bad. And racist into the bargain because you are critical of the current US president based entirely on the colour of his skin. Here’s news for you sunshine, I don’t care what colour or political creed the POTUS might be . The country twice elected someone so glowingly phoney he could be seen from Mars, purely on the basis of his skin colour, since he had not a single qualification or achievement on his CV to demonstrate an ability to do the job. He lacks passion, interest, commitment and the cerebral candlepower necessary to perform as an adult. But you go right on ahead, sink deeply into the featherbed of your sanctimonious emotionalism where reality must never interfere with your warm and fuzzy feelings.

Carry on, Sinc. You know you’ve hit a nerve when this the extent of their reasoning.

  12. Roger

I do find some comments on Cat about Obama’s ethnicity to be offensive, Sinc, and I don’t know why you let them stand as they reflect poorly on the blog. I know: censorship, free speech and your prerogative as editor…but there are some seriously twisted people who comment here whom I would not want to be associated with otherwise, which is one of the reasons I don’t use my full name.

You get told to fuck off because you are a morally bankrupt troll.

  16. Louis Hissink

Indeed – this tragic incident, (and why on earth were MA flying over a conflict area in the first place) has allowed the usual suspects to blame any onet other than accepting the premise that humans often make enormously stupid errors.

Mind you it also comes as a politically inspired distraction from the equally horrible conflict in the Gaza strip, so a cynic might interpret the incident a little differently.

These troubles have their source in the political upheavals of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and those remain in play to this day – oil to fuel the empire’s military. As most of the world’s oil resources are owned by governments, with their preferred crony-capitalists given license to extract the oil, I would suggest a more nuanced approach to the Ukrainian incident might be more useful.

But goodness me, even Andrew Bolt has jingoed over this incident; not a closet leftie is he?

  17. C.L.

    LOL.

Was it just a fortnight ago that these same leftist nimrods were blaming Abbott for a “wave of suicide attempts” on Nauru?

  18. Ant

    I agree with Mick.

To the extent that criticism is due to the idiot Obama, his race is relevant only because he and his leftist buddies have been exploiting it so relentlessly for his entire political career – particularly as a standard defence for whenever he goofs off or lies or acts lawlessly or undermines his own country or its allies or emboldens radicals in his country or abroad.

Personally I look at this reckless and destructive a-hole and the fact that he’s (half) black never even registers as being relevant to the disasters he’s wrought- except for the fact that the left obsesses over it to advance their ideology.

The left’s behaviour towards the following public figures makes this the unassaible truth: Clarence Thomas, Allen West, Ben Carson, Thomas Sowell, etc.

  19. Well aren’t you the pious little princess.

Thanks Gab – right on cue – a perfect example of my reference to slurs about sexuality above.

Numbers, I generally believe that the best response to you is none at all.

But anyone who read this site on more than a casual basis would realise, very quickly, that your simple right/left dichotomy does not apply for a second. There are people here who are in complete agreement on some issues and in furious disagreement on others. It’s, supposedly, a “libertarian” site but I’m no libertarian nor are many others who post here. There are individuals, such as you, whose comments are so predictable that I simply scroll past them. There are some I disagree with but whose remarks I read because they are carefully thought out and informed. Alas, again you rarely fall into this category.

There are more temper tantrums per square metre on this site than anywhere else on the web.

Your experience of the web is clearly very limited. I’ve been on the ‘net since before there was a net and the Cat is mild compared to the Wild West days of Usenet. Before Usenet, we were on dial up modems and bandwidth was limited. Obtuse questions usually got “RTFM*, moron”.

You are the one who needs to grow up.

  21. Mick Gold Coast QLD

    From Roger at 10:22 am:

“I do find some comments on Cat about Obama’s ethnicity to be offensive …”

You don’t recall rancorous Michelle’s snarling at whitey for never givin’ her nuffin’ even before he slithered into the job? Or his mentor Sharpton’s lifetime of race baiting?

And the magic negro hooking into Cambridge police sergeant James Crowley for doing his job properly back in 2009 didn’t demonstrate a twisted mind and reflect poorly on the presidency? Or his majesty’s adoption of Traaaayvon as potentially his son in an effort to fit up a whitey for shooting the wee drug chef when he attacked?

You’ve clearly not been paying attention to the words and actions of the most racist president you will ever see sport. He turned offensive race baiting into a key job requirement.

F*ck me. What kind of “nuanced approach” to this “incident” would you take if someone massacred your family and friends with a missile?

It may turn out to be some kind of accident but it probably won’t be. Regardless, 300 people have been killed simply because the plane they were on flew over Ukrainian airspace.

I am heartily sick of “nuanced approaches” to atrocities.

I am mystified at the ability and assumption by the left, a definite and easily defined section of the community, of which numbers is a life member to assume the high moral ground. Their great issues, AGW, boat folks, aboriginals, the poor muslims, the terrible Jews, are wretched vanity causes which exacerbate any problems which exist and manufacture problems where they don’t.

The left’s tactics are vile, involving lies, insults, censorship, antipathy to democracy and individual rights.

Yet they assume the high moral ground which allows them to castigate any reciprocity of manner and method, such as insults.

You’re a dickhead numbers, like all your leftie mates.

Don’t worry much, just move on. The ill-conceived carbon tax is gone, it is not coming back. When the emotion subsides, those who supported it and still perhaps do, will realise the ineffectiveness of it. It is a matter of time.

  46. And racist into the bargain because you are critical of the current US president based entirely on the colour of his skin

    No.
The point being made was that much of Obama’s electoral appeal came from the ‘historic’ nature of someone of his racial background running for president.

Let me see. Hmmm, here’s what I would have done if I were President of the USA.

I would ring up the President of the Ukraine and ask permission for my US armoured brigade from Germany to enter and transit his country to the location of the wreckage, and I would send my team of investigators with them. The armoured brigade would secure the site and circle it with a perimeter of 5 km so that no unfortunate issues could occur. They would firmly warn off any unauthorised entrants to the area, with 105mm high explosive tank rounds if required. I would also send a team of JAG’s to interview everyone they could find within 10 km of the site. With recording devices.

I would expect the President of the Ukraine to joyously allow my armoured brigade through his country, especially when I offered a infrastructure compensation scheme for any damage. I would phone and politely advise the President of Russia of my intentions and ask him to cooperate in the investigation.

If he refused to cooperate I would send an armoured division instead.

Now what did the actual President of the United States of America do? Ah, I remember. He said some very slightly critical things about Mr Putin then went off to another fundraiser.

  72. Talleyrand

Bruce you want to move 10k plus of troops across 2000kms thru Poland or Czech Rep from Berlin to Donetsk. With what supply lines? And btw the only standing US Armed Division is based in Texas.

You want these US troops surrounded by Russian troops with much greater reserves, local knowledge and easily secured supply from their Motherland?

I hate the fool Obama as much as you, but no General would execute such an order without weeks of planning, not via an off the cuff thought bubble.

  73. Clam Chowdah

I know the origin of it and I suspect that it’s also a vicarious way for some people here to be racist then hide behind some mealy mouthed citing of the origin.

Sinc and IT: yes, sdog. He was one of the better contributors we’ve had.

  74. Bruce of Newcastle

no General would execute such an order without weeks of planning

And that is the symptom of the malaise.

What are US troops doing in Germany if they do not already have the planning, logistics and warehoused contingency orders for such a movement to the eastern border zone in support of a threatened NATO alliance member (or candidate), something which they have been contingency planning for ever since 1945?

And why would they be surrounded by Russians when in the territory of a putative ally, who has a non-trivial and increasing army and ability to provide reasonable line of advance security? Who have plenty of airbases to allow US support formations?

The armoured battalions of the US are designed expressly for Soviet antiarmour duty. I really don’t think they have a great deal to fear from the current forces Russia has, except battlefield nuclear weapons, and Russia’s current strategy is to edge their way sideways into eastern Ukraine by ‘facts on the ground’. Unfortunately for them the Ukrainian army has indicated that they aren’t going to let them, which means Russia has now over extended. They can’t pull out without loss of face and they can’t go in further without a hot war. A US armoured formation in the TOO would immediately remove that chance.

But, whaever the argument about force mix, the point is Obama has acted like a wimp, and only now is starting to harden up rhetoric a little because his own base is outraged. If it wasn’t you wouldn’t be seeing the reporting you see in the MSM.

  75. Tel

I hate the fool Obama as much as you, but no General would execute such an order without weeks of planning, not via an off the cuff thought bubble.

    * Regular push and shove with Iran
    * Trying to “manage” revolutions in Egypt, Syria, Libya, etc with varying degrees of success

Now they want to get involved in Europe as well. This is at a time when they can’t even get their own economy into recovery.

  76. It was used a bit in US right wing media in 2007. They’ve pretty much dropped the term. Since then he’s been president for 6 years, and is pretty much liked or hated on the basis of his policies and his performance in the job. It just isn’t true that he’s a “magic negro” anyway…. this is a literary trope for fiction.

What we have here is a couple of Aussie bogans who think they’re being clever with US cultural references, but it’s a stale, seven year old joke that nobody in America makes any more. Forget his skin colour. It’s not important.

  77. Bruce of Newcastle

Heh, I just got around to Powerline blog. Here’s what Paul Mirengoff says:

    Say the nonsensical thing

Obama declared: “We need to know exactly what happened, and everybody needs to make sure that we’re holding accountable those who committed this outrage.”

To this standard-issue mush, Obama added that he sees no U.S. military role in the conflict.

The U.S. has an airborne brigade in Italy, the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team . It could be used to help secure the site. Its deployment for that purpose would have the added benefit of demonstrating U.S. resolve.

Ok, I said armoured brigade. Mr Mirengoff knows a bit more what his country has deployed in Europe than I do. An airborne brigade would do pretty much the same if supported appropriately.

President Mush, though, probably has another high priority fundraiser to go to.

    +1 Bruce

I think there was a window during which a security force could have moved in to secure the site, either with or closely followed by crash investigation / recovery teams. However, It needed someone to front run the international consensus and force that validation through timely, decisive action. Yes, there would be risks in doing so, though I believe this would be localised.

Unfortunately, the powers with the capacity for that sort of enterprise, no longer have the will.

The “magic negro” comments are tiresome, though nothing to do with Sinc. But they are the reason one of our best commenters ever has left the blog, which fucking sucks.

Maybe people can stop it with the cheap shots against gay people.

Penny Wong is a fuckwit. There is no need to call her “that Wong chap”.

“That fuckwit, Penny Wong” will do.

Reading the Chinadaily.com, the Chinese president has finally called for an impartial probe into the shooting down of MH17 . Their initial reaction was to ask Australia and the US to stop accusing the Russians.

One has to admire our leadership for making strong and decisive statement about the incident, much stronger than the USA and Europe, sommething the Chinese initially did not like.

  81. What ever it takes

Empty chair says it best, golf, fundraising and holidays require most of his attention.

I think we should send a Gunboat to secure the site ,like in the 1900s! Oh Wait! Theres no sea there ,Well whatwe do now? Dunno.

Sinclair, you are the publisher. You choose what goes on the site. The phrase appears on the site numerous times. You have not moderated that language and you have published it.
Just as the initial complainant reacted to your decision to make light of the deaths of 300 people – which you did by attempting to score a student debating point with the Reagan-Obama comparison – you seem to make light of your accountability for what you publish.
You are either sincere or you are not. There are no each-way bets.

  84. Empire

Sinclair, i think you should accept the point that phrases like “magic negro” do not reflect well on those who publish them. Your presumption that this complaint is exclusively “leftist” in origin is wrong.

I think you should accept the point that phrases like “do not reflect well on those who publish them” do not reflect well on those who publish them. You published it, not Sinclair.

Perhaps your sanctimonious self righteous concern troll mind holds Sinclair responsible for your actions?

    Leftism is mental illness.

Heyn Pete, How does “the Kenyan” measure up in your standards. I use the term in tribute to the President being the very first birther.

Penny Wong is a fuckwit. There is no need to call her “that Wong chap”.

“That fuckwit, Penny Wong” will do.

Dot, I do not know what others are thinking when they use ‘That Wong Chap’. I use it routinely, and as explained here do so as a reference to her dress, not to her sexuality. She dresses like a male fop.

Yes, I have met her. She is a highly intelligent idiot.

Personally, I do not like the use of F-bombs and far prefer ‘That Wong Chap’ to “That fuckwit, Penny Wong” will do.

peter of kensington – really? Must I be your keeper?

People need to take responsibility for their own actions.

Until such time as I hold a gun to someone’s head and force them to hit the “Post Comment” button it is them and not me who publishes any comment.

Blogs are not like newspapers where someone selects letters to the editor and publishes them – here people self-select.

Isn’t Peter of Himebush a dickhead.

  92. Dot, I do not know what others are thinking when they use ‘That Wong Chap’. I use it routinely, and as explained here do so as a reference to her dress, not to her sexuality. She dresses like a male fop.

No, you use the expression because you hate gays.

You’re referring to her as “chap” – in other words, as a man. That’s obviously a reference to her sexuality. No casual reader would read that phrase and think it was about her dress sense.

You’re not fooling anyone with your pathetic excuse that it’s “a reference to her dress.”

  93. People need to take responsibility for their own actions.

Until such time as I hold a gun to someone’s head and force them to hit the “Post Comment” button it is them and not me who publishes any comment.

    I agree.
Even so, I would personally love to see you apply some stricter rules about commenting etiquette.

I have been receiving a lot of hate in the last few days. First following the repeal of the carbon tax – our progressive friends are hurting, having invested so much of their emotional energy in that policy.

Radio National’s Sunday Extra program often ends its Sunday morning program with comment by a Guardian Weekly Walkley-winning cartoonist who calls himself First Dog on the Moon. Sunday Extra describes “Weekly advice to help you navigate the modern world from the First Dog on the Moon Institute”.
Anyway, the Dog’s breakfast this morning was a philippic on Tony Abbott- inspired by the hurt of losing The Tax, including a poem invoking God’s curse on Tony’s head, a claim that his government might put kiddies in trees and kill them, and finishing up with a denial of the existence of God.
A typical piece of ABC Sunday morning programming.
The best bit on this mpegmedia podcast is at about 3min 45sec.

  95. Leo G

Hmmmm – should that be “they and not me”?

“It is they and not I”
“You publish not me, but whom?”
“The publisher is not I, but who?”

  96. Peter of Kensington

Sinclair: why do you moderate the site? Because you are the publisher and are accountable for its content? Or because you simply wish to have the ability to censor?
It would appear that you have a very limited concept of accountability, not to mention a poor grasp of the law.

  97. Pedro the Ignorant

This blog is, and has been for a very long time, a standout for robust commentary and intelligent and reasoned discussion on a wide variety of issues.

Concern trolls like this Moaning Minnie “Peter of Kensington” have come and gone with astonishing regularity over the years.

There’s an obvious way that it will be received even if no racism is meant. It should be totally avoided, in my opinion.
