ABC reports Julie Bishop’s criticism of Obama

From Radio Australia of all places. The article is titled, “Foreign Minister Julie Bishop chides Barack Obama over Great Barrier Reef climate change remarks”. They must have thought criticising Obama is a bad thing:

Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop criticises US president Barack Obama for a speech in Brisbane last weekend in which he claimed climate change threatened the Great Barrier Reef. It is highly unusual for an Australian foreign minister to openly criticise a US president.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop has criticised US president Barack Obama for a speech in Brisbane last weekend in which he claimed climate change threatened the Great Barrier Reef.

Speaking to 7.30 from New York, where she is attending a meeting of the United Nations Security Council, Ms Bishop said “there was an issue regarding [Mr Obama’s] statement” and she could “understand the Queensland Government’s concern”.

In a speech at University of Queensland, Mr Obama had said that: “Here, a climate that increases in temperature will mean more extreme and frequent storms, more flooding, rising seas that submerge Pacific islands … The incredible natural glory of the Great Barrier Reef is threatened.”

Ms Bishop told 7.30: “We are demonstrating world’s best practice in working with the World Heritage Committee to ensure that the Great Barrier Reef is preserved for generations to come.

“I think that President Obama might have overlooked that aspect of our commitment to conserving the Great Barrier Reef.”

It should have been described as a response by Foreign Minister Julie Bishop to criticisms of Australian governments by the President of the United States. It would have been discourteous for the Australian Government to disregard the President’s criticism.

  2. Craig Mc

I love how they get “chide” out of that bland response.

Good Lord! Is the Barrier Reef still alive? I’ve been hearing chicken little reports of it’s demise for the last 30 years. Hurry up and die already.

The Great Barrier Reef is the Snowy Mountain Scheme of environmental scares. I do not take an environmental scare campaign seriously unless it predicts the death of the Barrier Reef within out lifetime.

As an Australian resident of These United States, I have been scanning the US media for some reports, columns, anything really on the conduct of the President during the G20. The result – nothing. Nothing at all. Even the National Review and the great Mark Steyn, neither friends of the The Big O, have written about this slight against not only the host nation of the G20, but a long and loyal ally. It is quite possible that when the President is not at work in the White House the US media just assumes he is at the golf course… Certainly little to no US column space was wasted to cover the G20.

They do think criticising Obama is a bad thing! How dare anyone suggest he may not be stopping the oceans from rising or healing the planet?

  7. Vicki

This may be labelled trivial and sexist –

but my, didn’t she look the part!!! Absolutely elegant and glamorous. And totally in command in the chamber.

A comparison with the former PM is probably odious and churlish – but I cannot help myself – like “chalk & cheese”!!!

    What’s happening in that photo?
Is she filming a new series of “Judge Julie”?

As I said at the time if an Aussie PM had said the Mississippi should be protected from all human activity the roars of outrage would be heard on Mars. Yet Obama comes here and tells us to protect our own reef, which already is so over-protected that fishermen have been put out of business and we now get most of our seafood from other peoples’ reefs in places like Thailand.

The average fish catch on the GBR is just 9 kg per square km per annum. It should be several hundred times that, provided the fishing methods are acceptable.

Useful (long) article by Walter Starck here.

It is highly unusual for a US President an Australian foreign minister to wantonly tell lies about his host on an overseas visit openly criticise a US president.

Australian fishing resources, save for a few well known species inland and in the estuary and a couple of pelagics, are so far from the maximum sustainable catch, this is literally like throwing tens of billions of dollars away each year.

The really stupid thing is that the unlimited catch of redfin (European Perch) and carp is that there are barriers to entry which mean you have to work for one of the 30 or less inland commercial fishers or spend half a year as a saltwater commercial fisherman…in NSW anyway.

I have a mate who unfortunately is turning his brain into mush on JJJ and who said we ought to restrict commercial fishing even more and have export limits so we can have more high quality fish…supply and demand don’t make sense if you are lied to about the exhaustibility of a resource.

Bishop criticises a protected species… critiquing our care of protected species.
    Irony; Aunty does it best.

I do like that photo of Julie Bishop, President of Australia. If that would happen, it could persuade me to vote for a republic. Could, but won’t.

    Australiana at its best.

‘President’ Bishop? When did the coup take place? Why wasn’t i informed?
You don’t think it’s just that we’re the head of the Security council at the moment, do you? Nah, it couldn’t be that simple!

I wonder if the Queensland Government will get an apology from President Obama. It was a mean trick he pulled at the G20. I thought he was just badly misinformed at the first, but he would have known he was disparaging the Queensland and Australian Federal Governments in front of all the media.
    Nasty trick.

Don’t you dare criticise Americas first half black socialist leader ,he got a Nobble prize or something for saving the world didn’t he ?

  18. calli

I, for one, am very pleased that Ms. Bishop was “not going to be lectured…by that man”.

The comparison to a former…ahem…’chider’ is even more compelling if BO was wearing a blue tie or looked at his watch.

Looks like it’s official. The US has just become a Presidential dictatorship. The Laws of the US are, and are to be enforced, as whatever the President decides they are on any given day. No need to read those Acts or Constitution. The law of the US is now as found in Barry’s press releases.

Don’t worry about the Great Barrier Reef speech, written by others for the magic negro to sound out the words without ever thinking what they mean. He doesn’t know where it is.

Just like he wouldn’t have a clue where Brisbane, Queensland or Australia is.

Coral reefs only exist at tropical latitudes, retard.

Bishop666 should have gone to NYU and given a speech on border protection, and why AUS are now world champions at it. Humiliated the Kenyan on the day of his his big open borders triumph. Get his meeja laughing at him and describing him as stupid, backward and embarrassing – being shown up by his betters overseas.

    That’ll fuck him.

They must have thought criticising Obama is a bad thing:

The filth over at The Drum seem to think so. Warning: Pro-Obambi sentiment expressed by the spittoon-full.

  28. Crossie

    Nasty trick.

I always thought that word started with p.
