Simply astonishing.

You have got to be kidding

    Why are you suprised?

This is the Government of Frau Turnmerkel.

  2. Dorothy

Well that’s Turnbull for you, a true socialist

  3. Gab

For some time now, the Queen’s Birthday Honours list – a list presented to her by the Australian government – has been meaningless. Now with Finkelstein added to the list, it’s become a mirthless joke.

If finkelstein had any honour at all, he would not accept this Imperialist gesture.

  4. Richard H

This is one abomination that can’t be laid at the door of Turnbull, so it’s unfair to say it was done “by a Coalition Government”.

These awards are decided upon by the Council for the Order of Australia, which does not act at the behest of the elected Government. The Council is composed of top-level public servants, military chiefs (!) and a few ‘community representatives’ (but, yes, there is one minister, George Brandis).

But there is a kernel of truth in the original accusation: The Coalition was negligent in not shaking up the Council so that this – entirely predictable – outrage would have been avoided.

  5. Bronson

FMD they’ve lowered the bar with this one.

  6. Ray Finkelstein – the man who tried to introduce media censorship in Australia at the behest of the previous Labor government – has been honoured with the Order of Australia by a Coalition government.

    Simply astonishing predictable.

  7. Tel

You guys seem to forget that Internet Censorship started raising it’s ugly head under the Howard regime.

Both parties want it, they just seem a little bit cautious that the other will also get it. Don’t kid yourselves that they won’t keep pushing this.

  8. Baldrick

The Order of Australia was created in 1975 and is a leftover from the Whitlam years.

The North Korean award – Hero of the Republic would be more fitting.

  9. Snoopy

(but, yes, there is one minister, George Brandis).

The man that single-handedly sank the anti-18c push is a Fink fan? Well that is a surprise.

  10. Robbo

Nothing astonishing about this award at all. It continues the time honoured tradition of most awards going to people who have done nothing to earn them other than turning up and doing the job they are employed to do. The Order of Australia is a joke, it always has been, and so it will continue.

  11. Entropy

    Quite so snoopy.

Also, there is a political class who distribute the awards, and most importantly, the sinecures and the buckets of OPM amongst themselves. It’s a bit like the Button Plan for cars. It might look like a Holden Commodore but it has a Toyota label. Just like the political parties which are controlled by the political class. The ones with the liberal branding look just like the ones with the ALP logo.

The yanks are the same and that is why Trump gets oxygen.

  12. Entropy

Brandis will not be one of my twelve senate votes.

  13. Johno

No Labor leader would give such an honour to a footsoldier of the Left, but the Coaltion are too gutless to return the favour.
    Just pathetic.
This is why the Coalition get trounced again and agian in the cultural wars. They just don’t fight.

  14. jupes

At least Abbott introduced knighthoods which will always trump these stupid ‘honours’.

    It’s a shame they didn’t last longer.

  15. TC

Finklelstien , isn’t he a member of one of the fine institutions you hold dear , don’t be such a barbarian.

  16. Fred Lenin

Comrade finkelstein would have been asked if he would accept the honour ,this is standard procedure in giving honours ,it would be most upsetting if someone was given an honour then publicly efused to accept it.
Mind you h wouldnt be the first leftist hypocrite to receive an undeserved “honour” . Looks like the OA has been hijacked like Oz of the year ,bunch of leftoid elites patting each other on the bum .

  17. PB

He did his part for Greater I….

    Oh never mind.

  18. sfw

Sinc you have the hates on Trump, but if we had our own Trump do you think that this would have happened? Abbott lost his balls over 18c, the libs are just lefties pretending to be otherwise.

  19. AP

Is a member of Turnbull’s cheer squad finally seeing the light?

  20. Publius

Even a flat worm has the good sense to move away from pain…

  21. Turtle of WA

Turbull’s opponents in the media are the same as Labor’s. He has just as much incentive to shut them down.

  22. AP

The yanks are the same and that is why Trump gets oxygen.

I am told that Trump is popular because backward folk are upset at technological change. So this type of thing has nothing to do with it.

  23. Pyrmonter

He was a good commercial and insolvency lawyer.

You are right, AP. I wasn’t following the instructions of my betters. My bad.

  25. Pyrmonter

Peter Swan only got an AO … I’d have thought an AC in order.

  26. Sinclair Davidson

if we had our own Trump do you think that this would have happened?

    Clive Palmer?

  27. Linden

This guy (sorry General Morrison shit happens) was always a guest of one none other than John Faine! say no more.

  28. Rococo Liberal

    What a stupid post.
Finkelstein is just getting what most ex Federal Court judges get. This is not an award for his work on the Press inquiry, but for a distinguished career in the law.

  29. candy

These awards and the Australia Day awards mean zilch to people. Even the AOTY most people would be flat out knowing who it is.

    That’s how irrelevant it is.

If there was only one special person in a year to award, who would it be though? Probably the most special person lives down the road looking after a disabled child now adult through thick and thin.

  30. Ross B

    Simply astonishing

    Huh..?

    Yawn…

  31. Boambee John

Time to abolish all awards except those for personal bravery, on or off the field of battle.

The higher grade ones essentially go to people for doing jobs they were paid to do, the lower grades go to those who work hard for no pay. Produce an annual “recognition list” for the latter group, and tell the rest they got their recognition every payday.

  32. Boambee John

My second para referred to the non-bravery awards.

  33. H B Bear

Once again one is left wondering why the Liberals ever bother forming government.

  34. Nanuestalker

Clive Palmer? Are you dropping tabs these days with some hot lefty student chick these days Sinc? At least thats an excuse!

  35. Nanuestalker

Seriously you’re fucked up with some of your posts.

  36. Tom

if we had our own Trump do you think that this would have happened?

    Clive Palmer?

You’re sounding more and more like the supercilious troll you invited back to the Cat, Doomlord.

  37. Leigh Lowe

    Bullshit Sinc.
The reason this slipped through is precisely why we need the Trumps of this world (and he is nothing like that crook Palmer).
Brandis saw this and waved it through for fear that his veto would be leaked.
A Trump would have revelled in the leak and said something like “Yes.. I killed it. I wasn’t having a communist opponent of free speech honoured by our nation
That would be to disrespect all worthy recipients of this honour like Fred Hollows . etc etc”
See how to play the game?

  38. Mique

Ray Finkelstein – the man who tried to introduce media censorship in Australia at the behest of the previous Labor government – has been honoured with the Order of Australia by a Coalition government.

Once again, a raft of childish, politically partisan, emotive bullshit from people who constantly criticise the left for their ditto.

Has it never occurred to you that the Honours Lists are composed of nominations submitted by the various State political hierarchies as well as from the general public, and that they will always include numerous individuals who are anathema to the Federal Government of the day? That if a government of one political persuasion were to start to veto the nominations of people known to be of the other political persuasion that there would immediately be a rash of tit-for-tat payback, with the end result that awards would only go to party loyalists of the government of the day?

  39. C.L.

Anyone left who doesn’t hate the Liberal Party?
    Anyone?

  40. C.L.

This is not an award for his work on the Press inquiry, but for a distinguished career in the law.

That’s like giving an award to Rolf Harris and saying it’s for a distinguished career in entertainment, not for raping children.

    Distinguished, or egregious?

Is this not also the prosecuting silk in the infamous Bolt case?

  42. old bloke

    Simply astonishing.

Exactly that, nothing else needs to be said.

  43. sabrina

Anyone can nominate anyone who can arrange good references from someone well established in the society. Turnbull (or any other PM before him) personally has nothing to do with the awardee.
