Fake news trolling

What shall we say about this which is a comment from OK, but what have you done for me lately??

As well as having a cool Christian name, ‘Malcolm’ is right to slam Kates’ simplistic rants – such as ‘you either agree with my view that Trump is omniscient, or you are a deluded leftist dunce’ etc etc. Let’s not forget Kates’ idiotic worshipping of probably the worst conservative leader – in terms of completely discrediting a small government agenda – Australia has had for some time: Tony Abbott. Kates’ political commentary is so absurd and juvenile that it really belongs in a MAD comic book.

Or this?

Steve Kates used to be a sound economist. Recently he has embraced crony capitalism and protectionism / mercantalism. He no longer deserves to be called an economist. He is a polemic writer that’s all.

Or this which is yet another:

By the way, since Trump’s victory, I have become even more convinced that he was the wrong person for the job. The world would have been better off with Hillary Clinton, even though she is terrible.

Or finally this:

If you are grateful that Trump is president, you are, whatever you may personally believe about yoursefl, a non-card carrying member of the left.

Exactly. The only difference between Trump and Obama is that Obama was ideologically coherent while Trump has no political ideas of any kind and just swings left by default as most people who don’t know anything about politics do.

These are, to put it mildly, inane. Let me start with the last of these. What my post actually says is this:

If you are not grateful that Trump is president, you are, whatever you may personally believe about yourself, a non-card-carrying member of the left.

Not quite “exactly” is it. This is just trolling, and my guess is that these are quite possibly people who visit sites like this as part of whatever line of work they do. They are filled with empty clichéd parody statements purporting to be representative of what someone on our side of politics ought to believe. These are “fake news” comments. It is a form of Alinsky Rule #4:

“Make the enemy live up to its own book of rules.”

They make up quotes and spray accusations but never provide a principled statement of what they mean. In particular, they do not add specifics about what Trump should or should not be doing. If I have actually “embraced crony capitalism and protectionism/mercantalism [sp!!!]” it’s news to me. But since these are apparently boo-words, even if they don’t know how to spell them, off they go.

Trump is not perfect, and not everything he does is what I would do myself. But if you are not pleased to see him President given the real-life would-have-been actual alternative, you really have nothing of value to say. I am forever sent things from friends and relations from the NYT, WAPO or whatever which I almost always read since I am interested in the kinds of things that convince others. But this inane juvenile trolling feels insincere. It is like the fake news you see everywhere in the MSM, with the core aim to cause doubt among those who really do like Trump’s agenda. Reading these people is like reading the American press.

Doubt these are employed troll idiots, just kids with a crush on their politics teacher who go trolling as a school assignment.

[or the desperate and dateless left, split between sharing their misery, and basking in the warm collective glow of being another orc in the progressive horde of Revolution.]

My observation across the blogs I read is that you know when a post author has hit the mark by the sudden influx of trolls. In this case bulls-eye Steve!

  4. Crossie

Steve, why dignify the trolls by even noticing their spurious jottings? They are probably Fairfax “writers” now with lots of time on their hands.

Whoever they are and whatever their motivations without anyone acknowledging them they will go away.

Besides, they will all now be wailing and gnashing their teeth that Malcolm’s and Morrison’s socialist budget didn’t do the trick for them. This morning’s poll results have not moved in their direction.

Why did the Liberals think that putting forward a Labor budget would get them applause from non-Labor voters? If they can’t work out a simple concept like that they don’t belong in parliament let alone in government.

  5. The Vengeful Ghost of Fiona Watson's Moggie

‘If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you
But make allowance for their doubting too.’

Trump is light years better than the stinking, fly-ridden, utterly corrupt, war-mongering, America-hating, rotting corpse zombie alternative of November 2016.

But so were billions of others. So that’s really not saying much.

  6. Cassie of Sydney

“Why did the Liberals think that putting forward a Labor budget would get them applause from non-Labor voters”. Indeed, why did the Liberals in 2015 think that installing a leftist millionaire would get them votes from non-Labor voters? It didn’t work, did it? It is not even as though they have a tin ear to reality, the current front bench of the Liberal party have no ear! They are beyond a joke.

  7. Bruce of Newcastle

The only difference between Trump and Obama is

    Policies policies policies.

Trump has promised to (1) build a wall (2) cut taxes (3) cut red tape (4) boot climate crap (5) repeal Obamacare and (6) reduce muslim immigration.

All those are conservative policies – no way are they anything like Obama’s. Totally opposite in fact. He has made progress on the first five, and is only impeded by Obama judges on the sixth. Which will be overcome once it goes to SCOTUS.

Not all the outcomes are perfect, and (2) will be exceptionally difficult to achieve in the face of Congress, but he is moving on all of them.

Indeed if you compare these policies with Turnbull, he has gone completely the other way on (2) [raised them], (3) [dropped red tape days], (4) [pushing RET] and (5) [NDIS to ∞], and only has acceptable solutions on (1) and (6) because of his predecessor Tony Abbott.

  8. struth

Steve, the people that made those remarks are confused.
TDS causes an almost constant state of delirium in it’s sufferers.

    It is a fantastic thing.
Trump exposes real right wingers from the pompous “sunshine” variety.
The left’s heads completely explode, and those on the right that can’t stand being seen to have the same political opinions as the great unwashed ,( whatever the great unwashed believe) also feel a compulsion to declare their superior right wing purity from this Trump version which appeals to the common man.
The truth being of course, are not really right wing at all.

The left will do anything: lie, cheat, manipulate and ultimately destroy to win.

Once you understand that you can start to deal with their comments.

Trump is literally Western society’s last chance. That’s the other thing you need to understand.

  12. J.H.

  13. iampeter

Not quite “exactly” is it. This is just trolling, and my guess is that these are quite possibly people who visit sites like this as part of whatever line of work they do.

Steve, no one was trolling you with those remarks. That was in response to Malcolm who was correcting your assertion that opposing Trump makes you a card carrying leftist.

Many people are going to disagree with you on that because Trump is a big government leftist and supporting big government leftists is what makes you a leftist NOT the other way around.

I understand the election campaign support for Trump but given how terrible he has been and the budget that he has just passed, which we would’ve expected if the Democrats had won the last election at every branch of government, your ongoing support for him makes no sense if you claim to be a right winger.

You listed accomplishments, which he has not accomplished (e.g. implementing a travel ban which has still not been implemented and is in fact not what was promised. He promised a full on Muslim ban) and you are ignoring his massive failures.

For example: no prosecution of Hillary, no funding for a wall, no Muslim ban, no repeal of Obamacare.

Also you’re ignoring his leftist protectionism and actually listed his strong arming of private business as “Historic Partnership with the Private Sector”. This is beyond parody.

They are filled with empty clichéd parody statements purporting to be representative of what someone on our side of politics ought to believe.

I think this better describes your ongoing support for Trump who is running a big government, left wing administration but you seem to believe is some kind of capitalist champion.

  14. cohenite

Interesting; what would Hillary have been?

  15. iampeter

Interesting; what would Hillary have been?

With Hillary we may have gotten some token opposition from Republicans so the budget passed may not have been as big gov, left wing as the one the Trump admin passed.

  16. Cassie of Sydney

I have also noticed, over the last 10 days, when perusing The Oz and Bolt’s comments section, that the trolls are out in force, more so than normal. I suspect it is the Fauxfax activist failures, trying to make themselves feel relevant and keep themselves “busy”.

  17. Delta

They are filled with empty clichéd parody statements purporting to be representative of what someone on our side of politics ought to believe.

    Exactly!

And as an antidote for the trolls, I would recommend they watch this recent video of David Horowitz summarising Donald Trump and those on the left. Mind you, I suspect that they would not take the time to watch the video (it is about an hour long) and even if they did would most likely not see themselves as one of the left. Horowitz explains their thinking quite well!

“If a man will cheat on his wife, he will cheat on anyone.” That is my view. That is the way I vote, when I vote.
    Gary North

I did not vote for Donald Trump. I voted for Gary Johnson. Johnson vetoed 739 bills when he was governor of New Mexico. No governor of New Mexico had ever vetoed that many bills and most of them were sustained. His opponents in the legislature could not get enough votes to override his vetoes. He really made them squirm. That had impressed me for many years, and I figured I might as well say thank you in the only way that matters for a politician: my vote. Also, when asked his opinions on Aleppo, he answered: “What is Aleppo?” Somebody who had never heard of Aleppo probably would not get the United States involved more deeply than it already is in Syria. America would be a lot better off if Barack Obama had never heard of Aleppo.
    Gary North

No matter who is elected, Americans are going to be very disappointed in the outcome. The warfare/welfare state is going to proceed until we are bankrupt.

  22. Speedbox

You are obviously getting under their skin Steve. Good work. Push on.

  23. Bad Samaritan

Delta(9.18am) I haven’t watched your video but my own theory is that leftists are in “religious” thrall to the state; the bigger the better, all the way to totalitarianism. It’s really like a religion; believing in what has always failed to deliver; believing in what is not known, whilst all around them the evidence of what individualism and entrepreneurship has brought is there in abundance. Quite simply; without capitalism industrialising much of the world everyone would still be getting around by horse/donkey/mule, if at all….and stuck in hovels with no light and no running water and no widely-available medicines. We’d all be living very much like in 1800, just as in 1800 they were living much like in 1500. Leftists see this but refuse to “know” it.

Thus; Leftists are orthodox. They know what they know and that’s all they care to know. You see this being manifested in all the snowflakery; all the shrieking at being somehow challenged in what they know to be the absolute truth. They do not want any actual progress, but insist on staying where we are since most of these loud-mouths are doing quite well as they are.

OK, so the great majority of leftists are the followers as in other religions. Their job is to follow the orthodoxy. We saw that clearly in that video where the comedian mentioned Trump sacking Comey. They cheered until they were told to boo, and so they all booed. They are not there to think, nor to create new dogmas….they are there to receive the dogma.

Now, the biggest threat of late to their received dogma is….Trump. Not a professional soothsayer, and not running the show to script the way their idols do, and would have if elected POTUS. This is heresy and blasphemy for the religious left. And they are batsh*t crazy about it! All those who blaspheme their prophets must be beheaded I tell’s ya!

  26. Delta

Bad Samaritan (1o.17am). I think you’ve pretty well summarised how leftists think and behave and indeed what western society is up against. One line from Horowitz’s talk – education is supposed to be to teach people how to think, not what to think. What we now see in western societies as seen in reference to terms such as “safe spaces”, “gender identity’, “gender fluidity”, “identity politics”, “racism”, “hate speech” and all the other names to put down different opinions is the outcome of the leftist march through the institutions that has been on-going for the last 40 – 50 years.

Trump is a welcome challenge to all that dogma. I certainly recommend the video. It puts much into a true perspective, particularly because what he says is true for here as well.

Maybe the comments section of this website should be changed? E.g. to allow up and down votes, nested replies, view the entire history of a person in one click to see if they are a troll, etc. I’m a big fan of the comments layout on Ozbargain.com.au – you can easily find the best comments quickly and trolls are down voted to oblivion.

  28. gowest

Maybe a couple of buttons on each comment. A “This is BS button” would be useful.

  31. Mother Lode

Interesting; what would Hillary have been?

Illary would have been the very soul of competition.

She would dedicate her energies specifically to whichever group offered her the best price.

It is like a variation on all those people who keep with the same make of car, even as the quality deteriorates and they don’t allow their money to flow to those with a better product. So it is with Illary that she will not keep some blind, obstinate faith with that old brand, called ‘The American People’.

Her pure dedication to market forces would foster newer and more intricate approaches to securing her support.

    Innovation!!!

Moreover, under Illary, the rising tide of services and funding for the American people would halt, and recede (smaller government), reducing scale until it only serves that less numerous demographic she calls allies.

    Ah, what could have been…

  32. Jim Peters

Wouldn’t worry too much about it, Steve.

Most of these people base their analysis of what’s happening on insufficient information and through a distorting bias. They are heavily invested in a fiction/delusion as a way of explaining Clinton’s loss, which for some of them was a crushing psychological blow.

The frightening thing is that Trump’s project of transformation is only going to deliver more massive hits.
For example, ObamaGate is only just starting. These same people will simply be unable to process what they’re seeing when that goes down.

  33. Malcolm

If Kates wonders why we criticise his blind obedience to Trump, it’s for a few reasons. First, Trump is without doubt a big government protectionist that should be the antithesis of Kates’. Second, Kates continues to engage in ad hominem attacks on anyone who doesn’t like Trump. If anyone is trolling it is Steve Kates who cannot imagine why people don’t love Trump. That’s why I think Kates is unhinged. Third, Kates refuses to even engage with the valid criticism of Trump. He hasn’t ‘achieved’ even a small fraction of what Kates has claimed.

This post is the very first time that Kates has admitted ‘Trump is not perfect’. Previously his admiration knew no bounds. He brook no dissent. He said in a previous post that Trump was the ‘perfect president’ the president that ‘I would design’.

Is it any wonder that rational people would hold Kates to account for his over-the-top support of Trump?

As for mh saying that I sound like P.J. O’Rourke – well that’s the greatest compliment ever paid to me. O’Rourke is a genius and a true conservative.

Sadly Trump and Kates are left wing nutters. At least Kates doesn’t have the nuclear codes. God help us if we did – I think Kates is madder than Trump.

  34. Tom Henderson

The thing that get me about the TRump tweet about tapes
Is that he was referring to the fact that he believes he was
Taped in Tump tower and Comey said words to the effect
Trump was “mad” for saying so.
Trump was obviously referring to this exchange, not to taping by him
If Trump was taped in the tower, the Comey interview would
Would be revealed by those tapes, which the two of them
    Disagree on existing.
Trump says these tapes exhist Comey says they don’t!
    Time will reveal the truth.

Defender of the faith is right. Kates has become a fool. Trump is no conservative and no libertarian. He is happy destroying institutions (such as the FBI) which a true conservative would fight to preserve. I am totally sick of Kates making the most outrageous assertions that if you don’t like Trump you are left wing. Is that the quality of argument he takes in university?

Sinc: it is time to expel Kates from this blog, he can create his own nutter blog if he wishes, but catallaxyfiles should not be damaged by his demented ravings.

Hates free speech. I don’t like Kates’ views – please ban him for me. Kates – be silenced.

Here’s a dude claiming to be a right winger who can’t respect the blog owner’s property rights, but rather wants to mount a classic leftist smear campaign and have the pesky dissenter othered. Fuck me.

While I agree with the Malcolm’s I think if there was a tribal council then likely Sinclair himself would be voted off his own site. While the Cat is billed as “Australia’s leading libertarian and centre-right blog”, it is completely overrun with big government leftists or those who don’t even have a sufficiently basic knowledge of politics to even understand the difference between left and right.

So a centre-right, political blog with mostly leftists or those who no nothing and aren’t even interested in knowing anything about politics running the comments threads. It’s pretty entertaining.

Narcissistic blowhard knowledge supremacist. I am a political expert, you are a moron. Shut up.

    Faux libertarian closet totalitarian.

Both dummies who have read a few books, maybe done a few units in politics at university. Both now convinced only they can define what “right” is and both prepared to ignore reality for some ill-conceived ideological purity which they don’t even understand and no concept of the realities of political warfare in a power separated democratic state long ago captured by Fabianism.

    Not trolling though, just hubris.

  36. Malcolm

Empire: this is nothing to do with free speech. And it’s not Steve Kates’ blog site – it is the Doom Lord’s blog site. As I said before, Kates is just pushing left wing views masquerading as conservative / libertarian. This is a libertarian (or at least was a libertarian) blog and it has the right to exclude those who are not arguing for a libertarian cause. If there was a commie original poster here we would be asking Sinc to expel him too. Steve Kates is not having his free speech eroded – he can happily set up another blog.

That’s the same crap argument made that Yassmin Abdel-Magied would have her free speech violated if sacked from the ABC. That’s just bullshit. Free speech doesn’t mean that the Australian taxpayer should subsidise you to make your speeches.

Iampeter is right. This blog has been captured by a lot of people who do not argue for libertarianism. A libertarian subscribes to the following:

. small government that is efficient
    . anti-crony capitalism
. market economy with no protectionism: free trade
    . letting businesses fail
    . low levels of regulation
. rule of law, but law being primarily about protecting property rights and law and order and defence
    . low taxation
. free movement of goods and services, and pretty much the same with people (subject to reasonable protections from physical threats
. free speech, not constrained free speech
. balanced budgets, modest government spending

Trump is not a libertarian. Kates is not a libertarian.

    I know – amazing, isn’t it.

After a clusterfuck sitting in the Oval Office for eight years, how many hundred days should it take to clean the mess up.

I didn’t vote Hillary either. I voted for Merv Kratchett, the fellow in the grungy dressing gown and gravy stained T-shirt who stands out the front of Penn Station hurling abuse at passing cars. He might not be perfect (and he wasn’t running for office), but at least he is doing something.

  40. It’s called the ‘art of the possible’, not the ‘art of the ideal’.

I’ve also commissioned a tattoo for my lower back of this line, translated into Chinese characters, of course AND I’ve updated my tinder dating profile to just reflect this line. Thanks Empire, I owe you one.

On another note, imagine for a second you got to a Grand Prix blog only to find it overrun with posters who’ve never heard of a car before. When you try to start talking motorsports, because that’s the purpose of the blog in question, you get flamed, called a dummy and told to shut up. It would be surreal don’t you think? Well, welcome to the Cat! A centre-right blog about politics overrun by flaming leftists and people who know nothing about politics telling those they disagree with to shut up.

And that’s probably the biggest issue – not the disagreement (because you can’t seem to articulate any alternative position anyway) but the speed with which you and your clones go from zero to ad hominem flaming. This is not the characteristic of people who know what they are talking about, but the behavior of those who only have a very shallow knowledge of the subject matter and are so insecure that even the slightest suggestion of an alternative point of view must be immediately shouted down.

You don’t see stuff like this on left wing blogs but it’s pretty full on here at the Cat, thanks to people like you.

So in fact the phrase “narcissistic blowhard knowledge supremacist” is a more fitting description of you and your doppelgangers here.

  43. Andrew

I see some retards are accusing him of passing a Democrat budget.

Leaving aside that the real budget is in a few months and he hasn’t even got a full management team in the departments, does anyone seriously believe a third term Kenyan Admin would have cut the budget deficit by $100bn and reduced funding for NASA’s ecoloon division? When the tax cuts come through, they must be funded. There’s now some months to seriously debate the trade offs. They hadn’t even passed the first healthcare reforms yet. I’ll judge his direction after the first year.

If Trump doesn’t listen to people like Edward Snowden, his criticisms of Obama are total BS and he is just another President breaking the law to spy on his own citizens.

How Trump deals with this is massively important. If he wants to take on the deep state, it would be great if he actually did something about it.

Jim Clapper blatantly lied to the Senate. This was after Obama said he was running for office in part because he didn’t believe the President ought to ignore the law as convenient.

  46. Jannie

Um, Malcolm that is very illiberal, and illibertarian. Do you want an echo chamber? You do not have to respond to troll baiting, but good argument always deserves a measured response.

  47. Bruce of Newcastle

How Trump deals with this is massively important. If he wants to take on the deep state, it would be great if he actually did something about it.

  51. Malcolm Thomas

What (the other)Malcolm and iampeter said (mostly).

Kates’s persistent OTT language and inability to face up to Trump’s numerous inadequacies and failings, and his labeling of everyone who doesn’t see things his way as delusional leftists and/or people with ‘nothing of value to say’, are indeed ‘absurd and juvenile’ forms of debate, as I said in a comment Steve quoted in his post.
That vaious Cats have raced to his defence is typical of the refexive solidarity one expects on a blog site like this, and can be discounted accordingly.

  52. iampeter

I see some retards are accusing him of passing a Democrat budget.

This is a really good point actually but not for the reasons you think Andrew.

You’re quite right that it hasn’t passed the senate yet but team Trump are already celebrating as if this is some great legislative achievement, knowing full well that to get it through the senate they will have to strip what little good stuff there is in it anyway, but they plan to blame the Democrats for that when it happens and not their own lack of ideology. (e.g. trivial changes to Obamacare like letting states opt out will be removed to get it through).

In the end what will be written into law will be the single biggest infrastructure spending bill in America’s history, keeping Obamacare pretty much as is (but calling it repeal, which is Hillary level of doublespeak), no funding for the stupid wall (which is a huge reason most voted for him anyway) and all round bigger welfare and regulatory state.

But according to Steve, Andrew and many others here opposing this kind of big government, leftism is what makes us leftists.

    That is outstanding, Empire.

This may be the epitome of Katesspeak. First he published a silly little item that said nothing but accused anyonexwith concern about Trump of being a leftist. Unsurprisingly he gets a reaction people, including me, who think trump both fake and incompetent. Then he published a selection of reactions to his bluster. So now we have this bunch of twisting and whining from people who are supposed to be interested in critical thought.
    Kates is trolling himself.
