David Horowitz on Charlottesville

Key points.
1. One of the parties had a permit to be in the park where the violence occurred, the others did not.
2. The left have been doing violence in the streets for years but it suddenly becomes an issue when some other people are involved.

The following is the commentary by David Horowitz.

(Not the fake one against “white supremacy.”)

August 16, 2017

The tragedy in Charlottesville could have been an occasion to stop and consider how the tolerance for politically correct violence and politically correct hatred is leading the nation towards civil war. Instead the media and the political left have turned this incident into the biggest fake news story of the summer, transforming its real lessons into a morality play that justifies war against the political right, and against white people generally.

The organizers of the “Unite the Right” demonstration in Charlottesville were repellent racists. But they came to defend a historic monument honoring a complex man and cause, and not to attack it or presumably anyone else. They applied for a permit and were denied. They re-applied successfully in a petition supported by the local ACLU. If they had come to precipitate violence, why would they have gone to the tedious trouble of applying for a permit? Who knows what – if anything – would have happened if that had been the end of the story and no one had showed up to oppose them.

What “Unite the Right” actually demonstrated was that the assortment of neo-Nazis, pro-Confederates and assorted yahoos gathered under the banner of the “Alt-Right” is actually a negligible group. This was a national show of strength that actually attracted only a few hundred people. Compare that to the tens of the thousands who can readily be marshalled by two violent groups of the left – Black Lives Matter and Antifa – and you get an idea of how marginal “white supremacists” are to America’s political and cultural life.

Yet “white supremacy” and its evils became the centerpiece of all the fake news reporting on the event, including all the ludicrous attacks on the president for not condemning enough a bogeyman the whole nation condemns, and that no one but a risible fringe supports. Talk about virtue signaling! Omitted from the media coverage were the other forces at work in precipitating the battle of Emancipation Park, specifically Black Lives Matter and Antifa, two violent leftwing groups with racial agendas who came to squelch the demonstration in defense of the monument.

Unlike the Unite the Right demonstrators, the leftist groups did not have a permit for Emancipation Park (they had permits for two nearby parks). But why should they need a permit, since the havoc they had previously wreaked in Ferguson, Berkeley, Sacramento, Portland and other cities, was accomplished without permits, while their criminality was presented by the media as “protests,” and their rioting went completely unpunished.

In short, there were two demonstrations in Charlottesville – a legal protest by “Unite the Right” and one protest by the vigilantes of Antifa and Black Lives Matter. Who started the fight is really immaterial. Both sides were prepared for violence because these conflicts are already a pattern of our deteriorating civic life. Once the two sides had gathered in the same place, the violence was totally predictable. Two parties, two culpabilities; but except for the initial statement of President Trump, condemning both sides, only one party has been held accountable, and that happens to be the one that was in the park legally.

What is taking place in the media accounts and political commentaries on this event is an effort by the left to turn the mayhem in Charlottesville into a template for their war against a mythical enemy – “white supremacy” – which is really a war on white people generally. The ideology that drives the left and divides our country is “identity politics” – the idea that the world consists of two groups – “people of color” who are guiltless and oppressed, and white people who are guilty and oppressors. This is the real race war. Its noxious themes inform the mindless, hysterical hatred for President Trump, and the equally mindless support for racist mobs like Black Lives Matter and Antifa. It is a war from which no good can come. But it won’t be stopped unless enough people have the courage to stand up and name it for what it is.

    Well, that’s half the story.

The rest of the story involves the questionable actions of the police and state authorities.

I think sections of the Alt-Right are lead by and infiltrated by the leftists.

Standard socialist tactic to discredit and bring down the opposition.

The fact that any reasonably intelligent person there to actually defend Confederate history and culture would associate with people playing dress up, carrying torches at night, make sure your symbols are as close to KKK and Nazi German symbols as possible, ex Obama operatives.
They must be at the low end of the white IQ scale.

David Horowitz was one of the founders of the New Left in the 1960s and an editor of its largest magazine,Ramparts. He is the author, with Peter Collier, of three best selling dynastic biographies: The Rockefellers: An American Dynasty (1976); The Kennedys: An American Dream (1984); and The Fords: An American Epic (1987). Looking back in anger at their days in the New Left, he and Collier wrote Destructive Generation (1989), a chronicle of their second thoughts about the 60s that has been compared to Whittaker Chambers’ Witness and other classic works documenting a break from totalitarianism. Horowitz examined this subject more closely in Radical Son (1996), a memoir tracing his odyssey from “red-diaper baby” to conservative activist that George Gilder described as “the first great autobiography of his generation.”

name it for what it is.

The creation and sponsorship of mercenary armies.

  6. Rafe Champion

He knows what he is talking about. At the lowest point of the Cold War while Stalin blockaded Berlin the ex-communist George Orwell opined that the future of civilization would be decided by the contest between the communists and the ex-communists because only the latter knew what they were up against.

… the future of civilization would be decided by the contest between the communists and the ex-communists because only the latter knew what they were up against.

Hence the standing ovation for Trump in Poland.

Interesting, is this where political correctness is taking Australia at this very moment with racism being banding around at every possible opportunity where observation of a situation is more to the point.

  11. Rafe Champion

Check out the burgeoning alliance between the left and people who want to destroy Israel. This has a foot in the door of the ALP. Fancy being distracted by a few non-left nutters while this other alliance is widespread and growing!

Thank you Mr Champion for quoting Mr Blair. A sane person may wonder how the blatant inconsistencies in moral judgement and the cynical mobilisation of the useful idiots can occur without redress. They need to understand that this is the master plan of winning- a strategy that has been under way with a vengeance in Australia, with the infiltration of all levels of Federal, State and Civic operations during the 1980’s.
The strategy is now moving towards completion. The MSM is now compliant with imposed strictures of what can and cannot be said- eg the salacious and morally bankrupt tripe dished up as entertainment for the masses, but no-one can say that the best thing that happened to the indigenous people here is that the Brits got here first before the Spaniards or any other mob. The history will now be revised as per Mr Blair’s observations and soon what anyone beyond a certain age thought to be true will never have existed. In the end, the Elites who rule as they have always done will continue. People can’t say that they weren’t warned.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this. Thanks Raf… and David of course.

If you allow nominal private property, but impose government control, it’s called fascism.

It bothers me a little when conservatives call Barack Obama a “socialist.” He certainly is an enemy of the free market, and wants politicians and bureaucrats to make the fundamental decisions about the economy. But that does not mean that he wants government ownership of the means of production, which has long been a standard definition of socialism. What President Obama has been pushing for, and moving toward, is more insidious: government control of the economy, while leaving ownership in private hands. That way, politicians get to call the shots but, when their bright ideas lead to disaster, they can always blame those who own businesses in the private sector. Politically, it is heads-I-win when things go right, and tails-you-lose when things go wrong.

One of the reasons why both pro-Obama and anti-Obama observers may be reluctant to see him as fascist is that both tend to accept the prevailing notion that fascism is on the political right, while it is obvious that Obama is on the political left. Back in the 1920s, however, when fascism was a new political development, it was widely — and correctly — regarded as being on the political left. Jonah Goldberg’s great book “Liberal Fascism” cites overwhelming evidence of the fascists’ consistent pursuit of the goals of the left, and of the left’s embrace of the fascists as one of their own during the 1920s.Mussolini, the originator of fascism, was lionized by the left, both in Europe and in America, during the 1920s. Even Hitler, who adopted fascist ideas in the 1920s, was seen by some, including W.E.B. Du Bois, as a man of the left. …What socialism, fascism and other ideologies of the left have in common is an assumption that some very wise people — like themselves — need to take decisions out of the hands of lesser people, like the rest of us, and impose those decisions by government fiat. …Only our own awareness of the huge stakes involved can save us from the rampaging presumptions of our betters, whether they are called socialists or fascists. So long as we buy their heady rhetoric, we are selling our birthright of freedom.

    Thomas Sowell

  15. Warty

Rafe, I think the conservative voice is the one that is quietly developing: the pendulum has begun to swing. Since the election of Trump the left has been in overdrive, and now, because it has all the appearance of being out of control, despite Soros et al funding, it is all beginning to seem like overreach.
The media may choose not to ‘get it’, but from what I’ve seen on Youtube and what I’ve read, I think the various conservative groups do, and this is what is really important.
There are more people out there, along with Rush Limbaugh, who feel it is heading towards a civil war scenario, which is unfortunate to say the least.
Added to this is the MSM gas lighting about what is happening within the Trump administration, with idiots like Al Gore telling Trump to resign (as though Trump is hanging on his every word) and his ghost writer, Tony Schwartz, predicting his presidency will be over by their Autumn, and neo conservatives bleating in resigned unison that ‘he has done what he set out to do’, when in fact we were all told months ago that the swamp would fight back. It is, and the MSM haven’t spotted it yet, believing everything they were intended to believe, and then spreading the fake news as though the Trump era is terminal.
Well it’s not, but I do think society, as the Americans thought they knew it, is terminal: the deep state is being uncovered and there are a welter of people behind it likely to be exposed. I mean, how many people knew about George Soros a year ago: I bet you there are triple, quadruple the number who know of him now, and a damn side more in his home country too.
John McCain and Lindsay Graham are now seen to represent the very definition of cuck conservatives and part of the problem, though not so clearly back when they were just competitors in the race for the primaries. So who listens to them? Their fellow cucks and the good old MSM. Who else!
The Democrats and their neo conservative fellow travellers, with the aid of the MSM, have started a war and, like most wars, once the first shots are fired events take over and outcomes become largely unpredictable, leaving only one certainty: things will never be the same again.

  16. Yohan

If David Horowitz was not Jewish the left would claim that by writing this article he supports neo-nazi’s and white supremacists.

Scratch that, they already call him an anti-semite.

  17. testpattern

Horowitz is not a loony. He’s just developed a business model that makes money out of them. Loonies that it. And incites them. Oh look who you come across when you don’t have a star picket handy – dyllan roof

  18. C.L.

    Kind of a strange essay.
Horowitz accepts, nay insists (correctly), that white people and white culture – meaning the rule of law, liberty, constitutionality, free markets, basically all the greatest advancements in human history – are being targeted in a “war.” But he then accepts that all the groups and people who won’t lie down and accept the violence and hideous incursions of the war-makers are “repellent.”

What’s really going on here is that the failure of most “white people” to fight back leaves the field open to none but the most zealous, who are also – and this is important – the most indifferent to the left’s suite of maliciously prosecuted social penalties. Horowitz’s conclusion – “[the race war] won’t be stopped unless enough people have the courage to stand up and name it for what it is” – is wrong.

It will only be stopped when white people – or even just traditionalist American lovers of Western civilisation and Jeffersonian liberty – fight back. Fight back to the extent that their voices become so loud, diffuse, mainstream and contemptuous of the aforesaid strictures – the ones routinely used to brutalise them hitherto – that the leftist media and the street thugs become the socially isolated, hunted ones. Winning is not about naming things for what they are. It’s about destroying those things where they stand. Qua Reagan: Here’s my idea – we win and they lose.

  19. Bruce of Newcastle

I actually think the Boston event was the more alarming.

Again a few hundred people had a permit to rally in support of freedom of speech.

A large number of left-wing demonstrators turned out to oppose them – demonstrating against freedom of speech! The First Amendment of the US Constitution! And are prepared to be violent:

A total of 33 arrests were made Saturday, mostly from disorderly conduct and a few assaults on police officers, the Boston Police Department announced. Police Commissioner William Evans said at a news conference this afternoon that some urine-filled bottles were thrown at officers, and police indicated on Twitter that some demonstrators were throwing rocks at police.

That is something no one in the MSM I’ve seen has remarked upon.

  20. Yohan

I unfairly lumped Horowitz in with the neo-cons back in the Bush era.

  21. Crossie

… the future of civilization would be decided by the contest between the communists and the ex-communists because only the latter knew what they were up against.

Hence the standing ovation for Trump in Poland.

And that’s why Poles are resisting Merkel’s orders to take in her refugees, they are fighting attempts by another powerful empire to change their society by force rather than by a vote. Western governments are now behaving like communist regimes imposing disastrous changes on their own populations because they have not experienced it before and fail to recognise it.

  22. jonesy

Alt Right? Ultra Nationalist? Democratic Socialist? Nationalist Socialist? These groups are just all aspects of leftist class warfare. So, if there is civil war, will it only be leftists killing each other over who gets to rule?
Black leftists against white leftists. Anarchists against Nazis? Who cares what they do.as long as they annihilate each other completely!

  23. Fulcrum

I have no idea whether the young female who was killed in Charlottesville was hit by the front of the car or the back or even the speed the car was travelling.
Anyway, over the course of time, assuming the facts come out, we’ll find out.

  24. Felix Kruell

Once the two sides had gathered in the same place, the violence was totally predictable.

Maybe so, but let’s not take away personal responsibility, particularly when it leads to another person’s death.

  25. Warty

C.L. Here’s a question for you: though I agree real conservatives need to ‘fight’ back; and though I agree their collective voice needs to be loud, diffuse . . . how does one achieve that?

  26. mh

MSNBC: “You still have actual Nazis” in the White House

If 2gb’s Richard Arnold told Steve Price this, Price would wrap up with “I agree”.

Listening to 2gb’s news bulletin last week, they had Richard Arnold saying that someone had tweeted that they had to literally stop the car and get out and vomit when they heard Trump’s comments. This is what 2gb believes is news.

  27. J.H.

Which was why it was stupid for Trump to buy into it…. He should have said no more on the riots after condemning the violence that resulted in a death.

As for the Civil War statues, these are State and City issues….. If those councils want to pull down the statues…. Then they are going to be pulled down and nobody can stop them other than the voters of those electorates.

Just like our Melbourne city councils can abolish the 26th of January Australia Day celebrations and put in “Smoking Ceremonies”…. We can whinge about it, but if our side of politics don’t occupy these councils, then they are free to implement anything they want which they have jurisdiction over…. cuts both ways though. The councils on our side of politics should be abolishing ecofascist sacred cows, pulling down solar panels, wind towers and abolishing subsidy deals…. but they’re not. There’s a message in that for us little conservative sheeple out here. Our side of politics is not really representing us is it?

Trump on the other hand, declared war on these people when his side of politics swept away their EPA regulations and started repealing swaths of Democrat and ecofascist sacred cows….. They responded by pulling down Confederate Statues….Trump should have left them alone with their rage and childishness. But he was too foolish to understand when he was winning.

Trump allowed his political opponents to change the agenda, he’ll need to change that back. He really should just get to work building the border wall and coming good on the promises he made at the election.

  28. Muzzlehatch

What do folks imagine will be the response of the Deplorable constituency that voted Trump into office if this pathetic Palace coup comes to fruition? Lets say they defenestrate Trump tommorow to cheers and ullulations and pussy hats tossed into the crowd. What will you’re refulgent utopia look like having over thrown the hate Ubertrumpfuher? What if the flyover country rustbelt denisons decide that they are just gonna stop picki g cotton for Washington.. ? “We already voted once” … With Trump gone these folks have no hope. Time for civil disobedience and a general strike. Who would be the Democrat that would steady the Madding Crowd after a Trump coup? Tim Kaine? Hillary Clinton? So you geniuses get rid of the Hated Trump . What you gonna do next?

  29. Muzzlehatch

What is happening is that people like Karen Straughn and Chris Cantwell are being shut down deplatformed and jailed. If you ever wanted to consider the counterfactual well now is the time to pay attention before the folks just become corpses that appear up river and make their way down river with nothing to report. This will be you next.

  30. Crossie

There’s a message in that for us little conservative sheeple out here. Our side of politics is not really representing us is it?

I’m really looking forward to July 2019. The next election is going to be epic.
