Let the purge of begin

Applying the limits to tolerance or stamping out free speech?

And does it matter? its his site.

The blacklisting of alt-right sites on the Internet has begun in earnest.

Add CloudFlare to the growing list of companies refusing to do business with the loathsome, hate-spewing Daily Stormer. Reversing the company’s previous stance on not censoring content, founder and CEO Matthew Prince wrote in an internal email that he “woke up this morning in a bad mood and decided to kick them off the Internet. It was a decision I could make because I’m the CEO of a major Internet infrastructure company.”

“My rationale for making this decision was simple: the people behind the Daily Stormer are a**holes and I’d had enough,” Prince wrote. “Let me be clear: this was an arbitrary decision.” [Emphasis added]

Its a bit like that Blues Brothers moment:

    “I hate Illinois Nazis”

Why is everybody surprised about this. Before the end of the Obama Presidency he had all the CEOs of various sites, i.e Google, Facebook, Twitter etc etc., over to the White House and a plan was devised to do exactly this. It is now coming to fruition because, as usual, people just let it happen.

The heroes of the neo Nazis are of course the National Socialists. Those of the anti-fa are the Communists, or the International Socialists. When the Communists and the Nazis are at odds with one another, how is the libertarian to react? One possibility is to support both groups, in the hope that they will each reduce the power of the other, and thereby their own. Both are 180 degrees removed from the freedom philosophy. However, if finer distinctions are called for, we note that the Communists murdered far more innocent people than did the Nazis: Mao: some 60 million, Stalin, roughly 20 million, Pol Pot, about 3 million; Hitler, only an estimated 11 million. So, if we absolutely had to pick and choose (no such choice is incumbent upon us) the nod goes to the, gulp!, Nazis. Then, too, the Communists had a far more all-encompassing theory than their fellow socialist counterparts. As long as you were not a Jew, or a black, or gay, or Romany, and did not oppose them, the Nazis would leave you more or less in peace. The same cannot be said for the Communists. So, I agree with the critics of Mr. Trump for his so called “moral equivalence.” For the libertarian, the case for moral equivalence is weak. The left is to be more bitterly opposed than is the right.

Libertarians, of course, are neither of the right nor the left.

Imagine if he had the code for nuclear arms. Quite a leader.

  5. I read that the catalyst for this decision was the fact that the DS guys were boasting that because Cloudflare hosted them, that implied they supported DS’s politics. That was a dick move.

Turns out Nazis are dicks! Who knew. They can get stuffed.

I don’t want to hear another word about “net neutrality” from these people.

  7. Countercultural San Francisco parish attracts growing congregation:

“We are offering a style of worship that is more traditional and more classical, but it is also revivifying the neighbourhood,” said Fr Illo, who was appointed to start an Oratory of St Philip Neri, a project later put on hold. “We put money into professional musicians” and are building up the volunteer choir, Fr Illo said.

The priests at Star of the Sea distribute Communion at the Communion rail. In Lent, Fr Illo began an experimental period of celebrating Mass “ad orientem,” meaning the priest faces the high altar and crucifix during the parts of the Mass where the priest and people address God. While extraordinary form Latin Mass was instituted earlier, there are now two Masses on Sunday and one daily celebrated using the 1962 Roman Missal, known commonly as the Tridentine rite, in addition to English Masses.

Shortly after his appointment, Fr Illo ignited controversy when he decided to train only boys and men for altar service going forward, coming at the time Archbishop Cordileone was receiving negative publicity associated with Catholic high school teachers’ contract talks.

“Serving as an altar server is a feeder for the male-only priesthood, and helpful in forming boys in leadership, much as girls-only programmes at many of our schools,” Fr Illo said in an interview. Today the negative publicity has abated, and he said as many as 10 altar servers serve at extraordinary form Latin Masses.

The Cat also uses Cloudflare. How long before we are kicked off? Do we need to start looking for an alternative?

    Jacques, any suggestions?

  9. rickw

More like he got the memo, “get the alt-right of the internet”.

  10. Diogenes

I don’t where pjmedia got the so called “internal email” from and its accuracy.

The public statement is rational and well argued https://blog.cloudflare.com/why-we-terminated-daily-stormer/

  11. A Lurker

It might start out with the Nazis, but eventually the net will be cast so wide that ordinary people with different opinions will be caught up as well.
The next thing that will happen will be civil war.

” Prince wrote. “Let me be clear: this was an arbitrary decision.”

But Trump is the unstable and capricious one.

  13. Crossie

And does it matter? They’re privately owned.

So were the phone companies but when they got too big and cocky they were broken up and became heavily regulated.

  14. JohnA

“woke up this morning in a bad mood and decided to kick them off the Internet. It was a decision I could make because I’m the CEO of a major Internet infrastructure company.

    Capricious much?

OK, he could have simply said, “we don’t agree with them, they have assumed too much about our ‘support’ so we no longer host them.”

But to be so petulant as to claim they can “kick them off the Internet” demonstrates two things (at least):
    a) he doesn’t understand the internet
    b) he doesn’t understand the limits to stupidity (if any)

His swaggering abuse of power will come back to bite him. I hope he learns soon, so he can grow up a lot.

Nice bit of virtue signalling there by one of the elites, but they’re still up and running, if that sort of brain-dead stuff floats your boat.

It goes further. See John Hinderaker of Powerline on “GOOGLE TEAMING WITH LEFT-WING GROUPS TO DRIVE CONSERVATIVES OFF THE INTERNET?”. Link here.

Some time down the road when there is an inquiry into the ownership of the internet, and there will be, this passage and this guy’s tossed off pronouncement can and should be used in evidence against them.

  19. Crossie

That saying about power and corruption, it’s not the whole story. The other part is hubris which goes before a fall.

  20. Diogenes

Never heard of him or his organisation so who cares.

Cloudflare hosts, or handles the dns for about 10% of the world wide web. Only the largest companies can afford to host to their own sites. Say you wanted to create a website called http://www.alexitheconservativerussian.com you would buy some space on a Cloudflare server, and cloudflare will add the dns entry that converts the url(that is the name we type) http://www.alexi... to the IP address 123.456.789.1 (which is the address). Cloudflare will make sure the servers have the software you require eg apache, node.js, wordpress, joomla etc etc to run your site, and keep it maintained. They also provide a ddos shield as well

Not stated in the official reason is that if cloudflare hosted the daily stormer, it would be hammered by ddos from every leftist organisation in the world. As Cloudflare also hosts the Cat – then sites like the Cat could be caught up in the crossfire

  21. Haidee

Something else I hadn’t known. Diogenes explains.
It’s good when someone does some helpful explaining; like when a recipe tells the reader why – why you should add some oil to the butter in the pan.

  22. NuThink

And does it matter? its his site.

What about shop keepers or cake shops that refuse to serve certain customers, or refuse to make wedding cakes for people they don’t agree with?

    Is that OK?

  23. Rafe Champion

Possibly. Consider the circumstances and the reason for refusal to serve.

  24. john

Just once I would like someone to explain who is driving the left wing putsch. Is it Soros pushing as hard as he can before he dies? Or someone else? I would love to know.

Apparently a union has warned/ threatened Australia Post re the postal SSM vote.
    Good times.

  26. Elizabeth (Lizzie) Beare

    Cloudflare also hosts Catallaxy?

Better be on our best behavior then.

We’ll have to tell him Calli cleans up the overnight spills and blood.
And that Sinc is a very proper Doomlord.
    Hope that washes.

  27. Elizabeth (Lizzie) Beare

Apparently a union has warned/ threatened Australia Post re the postal SSM vote.

Of course they have. Some union hack has hired a warehouse to store the ‘disappeared’ ones from the ‘wrong’ electorates till they can be dumped in an incinerator. No checks on who replies.
    No problem.

  28. Kneel

“What about shop keepers or cake shops that refuse to serve certain customers, or refuse to make wedding cakes for people they don’t agree with?”

My thoughts exactly – were I them, I would lawyer-up and go them on the same grounds.

I don’t know what you mean by well-reasoned. Here, you suggest that the well-reasoned post omitted the main reason. Oh, well. Back to the original reasoning.

We could not remain neutral after these claims of secret support by Cloudflare.

Yeah, right. They couldn’t just deny it. The very best bit, though, is the sentence that immediately follows the above quote.

Now, having made that decision, let me explain why it’s so dangerous.

As in, See, we really are great defenders of net neutrality and freedom of speech. They’re also schizophrenic.

Missing from the discussion of CloudFlare is that both Google and Go Daddy had previously terminated the site.

Sorry, Diogenes but only half true. Our humble little family company has hosted its own web site for over 20 years. All that is necessary is hardware, two internet links, free software (LAMP = Linux Apache MySQL and Perl, or equivalents) and a geek to run it all. There is also extra stuff that a network geek does but that’s the bare bones, along with some web authoring tools (like a text editor).

If you want to run a Catallaxy blog to compete with the NYT, Times and so on, then maybe, MAYBE you could use WordPress – but as a WordPress/Joomla user for a couple of sites I have to work with, I would not bet my own money on those tools.

  32. Mr Black

Trump is doing more service for us than every politician in the last 50 years. He is calling out the hidden strength of the left, forcing them to declare their allegiance and their true position. By god, they’d best hope the armed might of the American citizenry never wake up.

  33. Muzzlehatch

Just trying to intrude one single toe into the vastness of each swimming pool. By way of information gathering.
What is very news worthy is what Faith Goldy laid out after Charlottesville and before she got the boot from Mr Ezra. She had some things to say when interviewed by The Daily Stormer. It took me a week to find out what that was. You can find her on the darknet. Good, Bad, or Indeferent. I am a man in my late 50s who has lived some and even if I were some squirt that recently felt the sun on his back surely we all have the right to decide for ourselves which aclaimations or visions or versions of rectitude we accept or repudiate?

  34. Yohan

Daily Stormer at no point ever claimed Cloudflare supported their ideology. That is a lie and excuse Matthew Prince used to terminate their service.

But Cloudflare is a private company and their TOS allows them to terminate any client at will. That is their right and they should be supported in denying service. But it would be good if he admitted he did it because of lefty pressure rather than lying about it.

Note however, that Cloudflare services ISIS websites that directly promote killing people. That was fine for them. Godaddy hosts hundreds of registered domains devoted to pedophilia, including the official NAMBLA website, and that is fine. But have a parody neo-nazzi website that makes fun of jews? Oy vey shut it down.

  35. GerardO

Pretty much anything like this from a commercial company is virtue signalling. Further proof that the Libertarian tolerance for corporate tyranny isn’t much better than the fetishization of the State.

  36. Yohan

I fully support property rights and the ability for private companies to terminate service to any hate site they like. This is their right. Things like Net Neutrality are a fraud and attack on property rights.

But the real question is ICANN, the regulatory body which overseas which companies may become internet domain registrars.

Right now Pax Dickinson is attempting to get accredited so that the domains of far right hate website cannot be turned off. If ICANN denies this application, then it means a global regulatory body can effectively control which websites are allowed wordwide.

The Obama administration gave up regulatory control of ICANN last year, a disastrous move that has free speech consequences.

  37. Arky

Yohan makes the point I wanted to make better than I could.
For decades these autistic sleazes have had a completely laisse faire approach to business. They simply didn’t care about content, including the most disgusting and degrading shit imaginable. Now they do care, but only if the content is politically unpalatable.
These jerks are large enough to have a service obligation same as any infrastructure company. We don’t deny people water, electricity or road use based on political belief.
You get that big you enter the realm of service obligation.

  38. Yohan

Arky the most amazing part was the guys behind TOR, who came out attacking the Daily Stormer. 30% of all TOR traffic is child pornography. They never had a problem with it, and would defend it as muh freedom.

But then someone used TOR for far-right political speech, and they are now talking of changing the code to block it.
