Trump’s travel ban set to expire, forcing decision on vetting

A core piece of President Trump’s travel ban is set to expire on Sunday.

The Supreme Court allowed parts of Trump’s policy to go into effect earlier this summer, starting the clock on a 90-day pause in travel from six predominantly Muslim countries. The stoppage was needed, according to Trump officials, to conduct a review of vetting procedures.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) submitted the results of that review to the White House late last week. Its contents have not been revealed publicly, but the report could recommend that the government strengthen its vetting protocols for visas and refugees, add new nations to the list of banned countries or even craft an entirely new order.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement that no decisions have yet been made about how the president will proceed.
But Trump recently expressed a desire to enact an even stricter travel ban after a bomb explosion in London’s subway system.

“The travel ban into the United States should be far larger, tougher and more specific — but stupidly, that would not be politically correct!” Trump wrote on Twitter.

The original executive order, hastily rolled out just one week after Trump took office, barred people from Iraq, Iran, Syria, Yemen, Libya, Sudan and Somalia from entering the U.S. for 90 days, halted the U.S. refugee resettlement program for 120 days and indefinitely suspended the resettlement of Syrian refugees.

[American] ABC television developing comedy series on illegal immigrants

The full force of the progressive propaganda machine is being deployed to create the public impression that people who violate our borders are wonderful, charming, beautiful, funny folks who really ought to be left to live in peace. Joe Otterson of Variety reports:

ABC is developing a comedy about an undocumented family with “New Girl” writer and co-executive producer David Feeney, Variety has learned.

Titled “Sanctuary Family,” the single camera comedy would follow a hard-bitten husband and empathetic wife who butt heads over the chaos created when they provide sanctuary for their undocumented nanny and her family. They come to learn, if their marriage survives, that the differences both families have aren’t as significant as their similarities.

A wild guess: the husband will learn from his wife, change his views, and the family will heal itself. Over time, of course. Another wild guess: the family is Caucasian.

ABC is hardly alone in propagandizing in favor of the irrelevancy of borders:

This is the latest project about immigration to go into development at the broadcast networks in recent weeks. Gina Rodriguez has set up Latino-led series at CBS and The CW. At CBS, drama “Have Mercy” centers around a Latina doctor who is unable to practice when she immigrates to Miami. She begins work as a nurse’s assistant, but risks everything when she opens a makeshift clinic in her apartment to serve the community. At CW, dramedy “Illegal” follows a 16-year-old American high school student named Rafael who discovers he is in fact undocumented.

Meanwhile, Fox is developing “In the Country We Love,” based on the memoir of the same name by “Orange Is the New Black” star Diane Guerrero. That project was set up at CBS last year, with Guerrero attached to star as an attorney who begins defending undocumented immigrants for free, with Guerrero also attached as an executive producer. Finally, CBS is developing the comedy “Welcome to Maine,” which follows a ninth-generation Maine family and a recent immigrant and his daughter who must all learn to embrace change when they share the same workplace in a tiny rural town. Greg Garcia serves as executive producer on the project.

Incidentally, all of the broadcast networks own licenses for television stations, mostly in the nation’s largest markets, and these are held in the public trust. They are the most valuable assets they own. It does seem to me that broadcasting the normalization of and advocacy of lawbreaking via illegal immigration is inconsistent with the public interest that broadcast stations are required to operate in.

But I gather that this opinion makes me “hard-bitten” and in need of further propagandizing by my betters in the television industry.

Borders? We don’t need no stinkin’ borders!

  10. Oh come on

None of which has to do with running in period. All new vehicles need to be run in, generally including special run in oil that needs to be changed at 1500km. Do NOT neglect running in.

We’re not talking about the same kind of ‘running in’. You’re talking about the current day running in where you take it easy for the first 1000 or so kays. The running in I’m talking about was a period of time, generally a few months after where you needed to look out for things that went wrong because of screw ups during the manufacturing process – when you found something wrong (or the car broke down), you’d take it back to the dealer, they’d rectify it and you wouldn’t have an issue with whatever caused the problem again.

As an example of the sort of thing you might need repairing on a newly purchased car – my old man noticed one of the doors of his Ford Escort wouldn’t close well and was sagging just after he’d bought it during its run in period. He took it back to the dealer and they reattached the door properly and he didn’t have a problem with it after that. This was the sort of thing you’d discover after buying a new car – badly/incorrectly fitted parts and whatnot. You had to take the car back to the dealer so any manufacturing screw-ups could be refitted properly. As you can see, this is quite different from the running in you mentioned above. What I’m talking about was made obsolete by Japanese manufacturers whose superior manufacturing quality control meant it wasn’t necessary. Other car manufacturers had to lift their game to compete.

It’s been a while since I read “The Whizz Kids” but apparently just after Wobbly Wobbly Two, quality control in American car plants was so bad it was not unknown for cars to come off the assembly line, and round to the repair shop to have the defects remedied.

My first car was a hand-me-down, a rusty 1976 ‘fastback’ Toyota Corolla. 4 speed manual. Dear lord it was slow. And, quite unusually, it had factory fitted air con which was effective but slowed it down even more. Apparently they were available as automatics, too – if it was an automatic, I’d have been overtaken by OAPs on electric scooters.

But it was super reliable. Never broke down on me. No one ever maintained it bar oil and water. I handed it on to a family friend’s son who’d just got his licence when I had the money for a better car, and it just kept on going and going and going. 350k+ on the clock. It’s probably still on the road somewhere!

Yeah apparently there was a LOT of that kind of specialist ‘fitting’ at the DeLorean Motor Company in Ulster. The DeLorean’s roof-mounted, vertical opening doors were tricky enough already, and the staff hired weren’t all that much chop (opening the factory in moribund Northern Ireland was a condition the British government insisted on to bankroll the thing) as automotive assembly workers. Consequently there was a lot of bending and twisting of metal to get things to fit properly.

It’s not just the prestige German brands that crap themselves soon after the warranty’s expired. VWs have the same problem. I wouldn’t trust any German-owned marques, either – you can expect Skodas and Minis to behave similarly. Even Bentleys and Rollers, which are basically German designed now, are likely as shoddy. The difference being you’d probably need to add another zero to the cost of repairs.

Just finished watching the first episode of ‘The Vietnam War’ directed by Ken Burns. In 1hr 20mins this covers up to the first US casualties in the early 60’s. So far-

    Excellent historical footage.

Lots of interviews with ex Viet Minh but few with their adversaries and almost none with the French.

Unnecessarily inserting short clips from the later US involvement. Not sure why these weren’t held until later episodes. Despite this it was fascinating to hear Karl Malantes and Tim O’Brien ( ex Vietnam veterans and authors of ‘The Matterhorn’, ‘What its Like to go to War’, ‘The Things That They Carried’) speak on camera. They are also advisers to the series.

Mentioned the various atrocities on both sides but to my mind seemed to gloss over the sheer brutality of the North and Viet Minh plus it gave Ho Chi Minh a soft ride.

In short seemed a bit left leaning and didn’t mention the Indonesian/Malayan issues with Communism but so far still well worth watching.

but I did wonder how they would tackle two issues – Ho Chi Minh was a hard line Communist, and the only model for Viet Nam was a Communist dictatorship. Any rival Nationalist movements were either betrayed to the French, or purged after 1954.

One of the least scrutinized aspects of Communist rule in Vietnam, apropos their “nationalist” mythology, is the fact that they ceded territory to the Chinese – the Paracels and the Spratleys were effectively given up in a 1958 communique by the N.Vietnam Prime Minister to Chou Enlai, recognising the latter’s claim to the islands – and they said absolutely nothing when Chinese forcibly annexed the Paracels in a shooting war in 1974.

The same can also be said about Mao, who was given great acclaim for “kicking out the foreign devils” in a few coastal enclaves, and yet he conceded massive amounts of territory in central Asia to Stalin. So the whole “nationalist” switcheroo was a major con by the commies.

The “international Communist” con job was to present local puppets as “nationalists” who were merely “fighting for their lands”, but who were also willing to give up their lands to their effective patron and line manager (as Stalin was for Mao, just as Mao was for Ho Chi Minh) in return for weapons and technology transfers.

The other was that the Americans intervened in a country about which they knew as much as they did of the far side of the moon.

They cover this but, to my mind they are looking at it with the benefit of hindsight. From the US perspective (at the time) the Korean war, the Chinese and Russian support for the Viet Minh plus the Communist activities in Indonesia and Malaya led the US to not unreasonably fear a takeover of SE Asia as the colonial powers withdrew.

The historical animosity of the Vietnamese to the Chinese( if the US recognised this at all) which played out in the long run was overridden by the indoctrination of Ho and his disciples in the USSR and China and the Cold War perspectives.

Ho and his party had no animosity to Mao’s China at all. There is a quote (which is possibly fake) that has him saying he’d rather put up with a few years of the French than another thousand years of the Chinese, but that was almost certainly when the Kuomintang were still in power. He never had any objection to signing one-sided agreements with the Chinese (in their favour), so long as Mao kept the arms flowing.

  74. I guess no Chinese businessman has yet made a donation to Dastyari to vote No.

So far the Yes campaign are spectacularly stuffing up their campaign. The gays and lesbians who are getting all the press are the activist types, especially the ones trying to prevent No campaigners express their opinions. They are alienating a lot of people. They are endangering the result for the “quiet” gays who have been in long term committed relationships. They must be watching in despair at the tactics so far.

Why is it so hard to accept that it is legitimate for a Catholic or a Muslim to adhere to the values they preach? There seems to be a twist in this debate that has evil undertones. Too many Yes campaigners are becoming just plain anti-religious.

This is an instructive quote from Richardson.

Muslims are 2% of the population, catholics are like 25%. Because Muslims use violence their 2% are elevated in the national conciousness to be mentioned alongside the 25%.

This is how and why terrorism works, this is why Richardson is a piece of shit for celebrating his belief in an impeding “truimph” while pre-apologising for the violence of his side and pretending it had nothing to do with the “triumphal” outcome.

I’ve read critics who didn’t like it, but for heaven’s sake … just sit back, relax, let everything go and enjoy it! The actors obviously did; they are all shamelessly hamming it up and having a ball. In surroundsound it’s unbelievably loud, but that just drags you in further.

We absolutely loved it … except for Merlin, whom I always thought was the best character/actor. And Hanna Alström is delightful eye-candy. (Sorry, ladies, but she is gorgeous and I am an alpha male after all.)

And Sir Elton John is like you’ve seen him before … (And watch for the inside joke; the two “watchdogs” are called “Bennie” and “Jet”. Elton? Bennie and the … never mind.)

It delightfully passed away a very wet Sunday arvo. If you just want to enjoy something over the top, full of CGI inserts and greenscreens, and wall-to-wall nonstop action, without pause, go and see the damned thing. Just don’t expect “Gone with the wind”!

Members of Action for Trans Health (ATH) have issued a series of incendiary statements on social media since its supporters were involved in an attack on a 60-year-old woman in London’s Hyde Park on September 13.

The victim, Maria MacLachlan, suffered bruising after being punched by an activist widely identified on social media as Tara Flik Wood, 28, a courier who lives in London. MacLachlan was with a group of feminists who were planning to hold a meeting about gender identity.

  124. Oh come on

But you can’t strip that context from Rosa Parks’s act, which is what makes it courageous. What Rosa Parks did actually took guts. These kneelers are claiming the mantle of the likes of Parks whilst being filthy rich and privileged which is bad enough, but more importantly, their very act doesn’t resemble one of courage or dissent. If anything, it looks obsequious and fawning. We only know it is intended to be an act of protest or whatever because that’s what they say it is. Watch it with the TV on mute and you wouldn’t figure that.

  125. Oh come on

What I mean is that if you saw an athlete get down on one knee to sing the national anthem with his hand on his heart, would you presume

    a) an unconventional demonstration intended to display a heightened sense of patriotism, despite this being a possibly misguided and ill-considered act that some may find offensive

    b) a protest to show solidarity with whatever the hell the wanker BLM/SJW crowd is currently whinging about

Because, in all honesty, if they didn’t tell me it was B, I would have assumed A. That’s what it looks like to me.

  126. OCO, black people in NYC could sit in the front of the bus no problems. It’s only the context of her doing it in the South during segregation that makes it revolutionary, and courageous given her own modest background. One killed in mass shooting at Antioch church, Nashville police say

At least one person has been killed and seven others have been injured at a church shooting in Antioch.

The shooter was wounded and is being treated at the hospital, according to Metro Nashville Police.

Police say the gunman opened fire at Burnette Chapel Church of Christ, killing a woman and injuring six others. Another person was pistol whipped and has been taken to the hospital.

Around noon, Joseph Pleasant, a spokesman for the Nashville Fire Department, confirmed at least six to eight people have been injured and were being transported to Vanderbilt Medical Center.

In a tweet from the Nashville Fire Department account, officials said the shooter was among eight people being treated for injuries. One victim was pistol whipped, according to police.

All of the wounded have been taken to area hospitals, the fire department says. The majority are older adults. “All of the wounded except for one is over the age of 60,” the Nashville Fire Department said.

NFL Jaguars and Ravens Take Knee for Star Spangled Banner, Stand up for ‘God Save The Queen’…
Posted on September 24, 2017 by sundance

This is actually funny. Seriously, it is hilarious. The NFL has made a collective decision to destroy itself and the hilarious part is the hives’ echo-chamber is so deafening they can’t hear the organizational structure collapsing around them.

In church this morning a lady shared something with me. She said: …”and now we know why faith stopped Tim Tebow from a career in the NFL.” Expanding, she said her belief was that God knew this moment was coming and he protected a loyal servant by denying entry onto the NFL ‘field of schemes’ as a career.

You know, I think that lady is on to something…

    https://theconservativetreehouse.files.wordpress.com/2017/09/baltimore-ravens-and-jacksonville-jaguars.jpg

The Jacksonville Jaguars and Baltimore Ravens are in England today for a game in London. When the U.S. National Anthem was played both teams disrespected the USA and yet stood up for the U.K National Anthem ‘God Save The Queen’. Think about that.

The NFL, writ large, is nuts. They’ve lost their minds. The NFL players, managers, league officials and owners, along with downstream sport punditry and networks, obviously think virtue signaling their collective unity plays well -mostly in their echo-chamber because of the support from left-wing media- but outside their bubble they are destroying their own business model. Watch what happens.

Man Awakens After 12 Years in a “Vegetative State,” Says “I Was Aware of Everything”
    https://buff.ly/2xoIEpn

In the 1980’s, 12-year-old Martin Pistorious became seriously ill with what doctor’s believed was Cryptococci Meningitis. His health started deteriorating and Martin lost his ability to move, make eye contact and even speak to others. His doctors told his parents, Rodney and Joan Pistorious, to bring him home and let him die. They told them he was as good as a vegetable.

    However, he didn’t die.

Joan said, “Martin just kept going, just kept going.”

According to NPR news, his father would get up at 5 o’clock in the morning, get him dressed, load him in the car, take him to the special care center where he’d leave him. Rodney said, “Eight hours later, I’d pick him up, bathe him, feed him, put him in bed, set my alarm for two hours so that I’d wake up to turn him so that he didn’t get bedsores.”

For twelve years, Martin’s family cared for him without any sign that he was improving. Joan started to despair and even told her son, “I hope you die.”

Today she acknowledges that was a horrible thing to say but says she just wanted some sort of relief. Remarkably, now Martin is 39-years-old and says he was totally aware of everything going on around him.

He said, “Yes, I was there, not from the very beginning, but about two years into my vegetative state, I began to wake up. I was aware of everything, just like any normal person. Everyone was so used to me not being there that they didn’t notice when I began to be present again. The stark reality hit me that I was going to spend the rest of my life like that — totally alone.”

Unfortunately, Martin was even aware of his mother’s harsh words and began believing that no one would ever love him. He said, “You don’t really think about anything. You simply exist. It’s a very dark place to find yourself because, in a sense, you are allowing yourself to vanish.”

Click here to sign up for daily pro-life news alerts from LifeNews.com

Martin spent most of those days at a care center where his caregivers played Barney reruns over and over again. They did this because they believed he was a vegetable too. He said, “I cannot even express to you how much I hated Barney.”

But eventually, Martin became frustrated with being trapped in his own body and started to try and take control of his life. He learned to tell time by the rising and setting of the sun and would reframe even the ugliest of thoughts that haunted him like his mother’s wish for him to die. “As time passed, I gradually learned to understand my mother’s desperation. Every time she looked at me, she could see only a cruel parody of the once-healthy child she had loved so much,” said Martin.

Now Martin is married and has penned a memoire about his life. He has gained control of his body and in his book Ghost Boy, he writes, “My mind was trapped inside a useless body, my arms and legs weren’t mine to control and my voice was mute. I couldn’t make a sign or sounds to let anyone know I’d become aware again. I was invisible—the ghost boy.”

Martin’s survival is a testament to how little we actually know about the human brain and a good reminder that we should value all life— even when we hear the terrifying words “your loved one is a vegetable” or in a “vegetative state” from a medical professional.

the symbolism of taking a knee as an act of defiance is not clear cut

Notafan – ‘Taking a knee’ is a specific action in the game of gridiron where the quarterback is refusing to continue the play. There are certain situations in the game where this is tactically appropriate, but the symbolism in the context is clear. Being on both knees is respectful certainly.

I learned something earlier when checking up on a certain picture. It turns out there is an actual “US Flag Code” which stipulates the response:

During a rendition of the national anthem when the flag is displayed all present except those in uniform should stand at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart.

The Newspoll figures on the ABS SSM survey are fascinating:

    1. People feel so strongly about the issue it will have a turnout/participation rate of nearly 90%, compared to 93-95% in an election with compulsory voting.

    2. The Yes case is collapsing as the totalitarian left’s hijacking of the issue reveals itself.

    3. Considering the leftist hysteria of labelling SSM opponents “homophobes” — which few respondents will volunteer for in an opinion survey — it looks like No responses are way lower than reported.

OK I will. I think it is unacceptable and probably illegal. Lefties do it all the time.

    Speaking of which…

Energy Minister Mark Bailey will not face criminal charges over email deletion (Saturday)

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has returned Mark Bailey to cabinet despite the corruption watchdog slamming his deletion of a private email account as foolish, injudicious and a technical breach of the law.

The Crime and Corruption Commission yesterday cleared Energy Minister Mark Bailey of corruption and declared it would not charge him, removing a hurdle should Ms Palaszczuk decide to call an early election when she returns from leave in a week.

The probe found the Energy Minister had deleted more than 600 work-related emails containing public records without proper legal authority, including a “number” of missives from union officials including Electrical Trades Union boss Peter Simpson.

Mr Bailey deleted his account 10 days after his office received a right-to-information request from The Weekend Australian seeking all correspondence between the account and union officials.

But Mr MacSporran said even though Mr Bailey deleted more than 600 emails without authorisation under the act, it was not considered permanent disposal because Mr Bailey was forced to reactivate his account during the CCC probe and the public records were recovered.

So Bailey deleted his private email account, which he used for communication with union heavies, 10 days after a FOIA from the Oz. Then he says he wasn’t aware of the FOIA. Then the CCC finds that he failed to actually delete the emails from the public record, despite seemingly attempting incompetently to do so, and refuse to charge him. Nice Ms Annastacia thereafter falls over herself to bring him back into the ministry.

Some critters are more equal than others, eh M0nty?

  190. Rococo Liberal

Gay marriage is the wrong answer to the right question.

I thought that pretty timely and relevant considering all the calls to burn Churches AND Christians, that the lying mainstream and online media (like your beloved Facebook), keep drawing to everyone’s attention here in Australia at the moment.

But why would you give a shit about the relevance of that, when my posting a tweet about it made you believe you had another excuse to attack this old white Christian again.
