    Again:

PNG HUNTERS V PENRITH PANTHERS: PAPUA NEW GUINEA GEARS UP FOR GAME THAT WILL STOP THE NATION
    DAVID RICCIO, The Daily Telegraph
    September 30, 2017 6:00pm
    Subscriber only

Riccio: What would be the average wage/salary of the players currently in the Hunters side?

Pusal: Estimates for match payments range from K1000 (A$397) to K3000 (A$1197) per game with other benefits and expenses.

Riccio: What would victory over Penrith mean to the country? I could only imagine the welcome ceremony back home the team would receive.

If the Hunters win the Interstate Championship it’ll be another massive celebration for the fans here (thousands lining the streets to welcome back the team) and a statement to the NRL/ARL that we might be on to something up here.

Y’know, the great thing about Queensland – when there’s a QLD team playing, you can go to the game in a Broncos, a Maroons, or a Cowboys jersey, and everyone will know you’re a true fan (unless one of those teams are playing the other, of course).

Seriously, go to a Broncos game. You’ll see all three of those jerseys there amongst the Broncos supporters. Same with the Cowboys. And go to Lang Park at Origin time, you’ll see plenty of QLD supporters who don’t own a Maroon jersey, but they’ve turned up in their Broncos or Cowboys stuff.

For some reason, this doesn’t seem to have transferred to the Titans…

Frankly, I think you’d be insane to tip against the Storm. They’ve lost only four games all year, two of those when they were missing Cameron Smith, Cooper Cronk, Billy Slater – all of whom will be there tonight.

Crazy to tip against them. They’re just sooooo dominant. They play an almost-perfect, flawless brand of football.

    Crazy to tip against them.

    And yet… And yet…

Not going to watch it. Which brave Cat is going to report on the crowd’s reaction to the entertainment

Meh. I never watch the pre-match garbage anyway. That’s not what I’m there for.

I DO remember some wanker in the media – someone who, it’s quite clear, has never watched a game of football in their life anyway – trying to spin this controversy into an “old white guys” thing. “It’s just old White guys who are complaining. Who would they prefer the NRL booked for the entertainment? John Farnham? Jimmy Barnes? Give me a break.”

I was blocked from their Twitter account when I pointed out that the NRL had booked Jimmy Barnes and Cold Chisel for their Grand Final only two years ago…

  10. feelthebern

Either a storm romp or a Michael Morgan trick play to get the Cows home in the dying seconds.
    Nothing in between.

  11. alexnoaholdmate

I don’t know about you guys, but the first thing I think when someone says “Rugby League” is, “boy, that goes great with a self-indulgent rap song from an American white guy with a face that looks like it’s been pressed in a waffle maker!”

Don’t see what all the fuss is about, really…

The last ever Holden Cup grand final now on 9.

AFTER 10 years, today’s grand final between the Eels and Sea Eagles will be the final match in the National Youth Competition.

Today a chapter in league history closes.

    Thanks Holden.

Jimmy Barnes and John Farnham are both immigrants.

“It’s just old White guys who are complaining.”

There are few things whiter than white people mocking “white guys.”
Leaving that aside, black and brown people are massively over-represented amongst the Nos.

    Jersey Flegg Cup
    From Wikipedia
    First Season 1961
    Last Season 2007

    Flegg, Henry (Jersey) (1878–1960)
    by Chris Cunneen
This article was published in Australian Dictionary of Biography, Volume 8, (MUP), 1981

Henry (Jersey) Flegg (1878-1960), football administrator and sewerage engineer, was born on 6 April 1878 at Bolton, Yorkshire, England, son of Henry Flegg, engine-man, and his wife Ann, née Willis. In 1884 the family came to Sydney where his father worked as a labourer for the Metropolitan Board of Water Supply and Sewerage. As a carrot-headed lad, Flegg was nicknamed ‘Jersey’ after the red-haired governor. He attended St John’s and William Street schools, Darlinghurst. After his father’s death in 1894 ‘Jersey’ Flegg was in turn employed as labourer by the water board, beginning on 16 October. At his marriage, with Congregational forms, to a dressmaker, Margaret, late O’Mara, née Delohery, on 26 February 1908 he described himself as electrician. In 1910 he was appointed assistant inspector, sewerage maintenance, in 1930 general superintendent and engineer in 1936, because of his ‘outstanding knowledge of and contribution to sewerage maintenance’ (though he had no formal qualifications). He retired from the water board on 6 April 1946, and was awarded the Imperial Service Medal.

I may have a small bet on Jason Taumalolo as Clive Churchill medalist. He’s come in a bit in the market, though.

  18. alexnoaholdmate

It’s Smith or Taumalolo, frankly. Maybe Michael Morgan.

But it will depend on who wins.

  19. J.H.

    Cowboys with an upset win.

Just watched the U20’s finals.. Manly pinched it from Parramatta in the last 20 seconds of the game to tie it with a try and win on the conversion kick….. Great game.

Channel Nein had a shot of the PNG team in a circle bowed in prayer. Surely George Brandis and Todd Greenberg should issue a statement of regret. Surprised Nine didn’t pixilate their heads.

I expect this has more to do with making sure Australians are exposed to MackleMung’s homosexual message:

    By Phil Rothfield

The 7.15pm advertised kick-off for tonight’s NRL grand final has been delayed by 15 minutes thanks to broadcaster Channel Nine.

The Melbourne v North Queensland decider will now start at 7.30pm to ensure Nine gets the opportunity to run their most lucrative commercials of the season while four million viewers are glued to their sets waiting for the game to start.

NRL spokesman Glenn Jackson told The Daily Telegraph big games are often delayed to ensure the 80,000 fans get into the ground on time.

    Not so.

The kick-off time is actually decided by the broadcaster under the NRL’s television contract.

The later the kick-off the more Channel Nine’s advertisers get in prime time.

Thankfully this is the last year Nine can determine starting times.

It is a huge frustration for fans on Origin nights and even Friday night football with kick-off times often delayed for the network.

Under the new TV agreement which starts next season, the NRL has full control of the playing schedule and kick-off time to major events.

That’s understandable, given that it’s 1/10/2017 and not 1/9/2017, and everyone is still celebrating the results of the only real football game in Australia.

There were over 100,000 attendees at the grand final, how many will be at the NRL grand final where they are giving away tickets? Talk about a moribund game.

And we didn’t have anyone singing about gay marriage, it was all about football for a change. That may only encourage more fingers up other player’s bums at your grand final.

    Go Storm!

  26. Motelier

I’m going to be tied up until 8pm with an event.

Qld South to beat Qld North.

I wasn’t going to watch, cos of the Go Gay or Go Home thing, which just fists me to tears, but … the Cowboys. Sigh. Those NSW feckers in the NRL who wouldn’t know a normal person if he tackled Erin Molan on the Footy Show (and smashed that smartarse cheating fecker Andrew Fecking Johns) wouldn’t know if I was sneaking a peak, would they? Feck. It’s a tough decision. Let’s go to the video…

  33. Muddy

Oh, and you can hardly call them scrums nowadays. They don’t move. It’s just like posting a FeckNO! in the SS’M’ vote.

  66. 34 – 6 … haw haw haw…. couldn’t happen to a nicer team! 🙂

  67. ssr

    THE BEST TEAM EVER!

All the better for all the bitter haters who’ve tried to trash them from the get go, all while they saved also rans from elsewhere and made champions out of them, seeded other teams with their champions and raised the skills standard of the whole League, and won QLD a whole bunch of SoO for them.

    MELBOURNE STORM! 🙂

    TRUMP

… and I wish I could tell you my other, against all odds, miracles, but I can’t 🙂

  68. notafan

Dude on Facebook with say how respectful the crowd was of Macklemore (complete respectful silence) , until someone who was actually at the game told him the boos had been dubbed out.

  69. Zatara

It’s nice how the NRL allows the players’ kids out on the field.

They had been getting lonely in the stands all by themselves during the game.

  70. ssr

    🙂 KIDS NEED DADS!

How much are my Storm boys sending THAT Message out to the country, against the lyin’, cheatin’ yessers attempt to sell their crap through the NRL!

And not just posing either; those Storm Dads are natural and comfortable with their kids, who are likewise with their Dads who they love.

It’s been a little mentioned secret of Storm’s success; being away from the Sydney League culture and focussing on a family culture to be proud of, that will last longer than a winning season … or many 😉 😀

Also remember that Israel Folau was another youngster Storm trained up 🙂

  71. Helen

I was doing other things with the sound on, and heard a few boos when stinky mackerel was announced but the cameras quickly cut to where he was inside and no outside sound. I switched off the telly and came back on in the first half.

I am sad for the Cowboys, who struggled valiantly to even be in the finals without the boots of many of their stars and to loose another so early in the game with a broken leg – but you know what? no matter how exhausted from less interchange options, from crashing through to the finals they thought they were out of, they never, ever, gave up.

Hold your heads high, Cowboys, you weren’t as slick as Melbourne, but you will do for my trench – any day.

And congratulations to Melbourne. How can I dislike you when so many of you I have cheered on at Origin? I wish the score had been closer, I wish Cowboys could have run with the ball more, because the few times they did there was magical possibility.

I am sad, but not super sad, because with 21 or so of the players on the ground from Qld, Origin is safely Qld for a good while yet.

  72. I’m glad to see the Cowboys thrashed. They’re not a club that deserves to win. Regardless of the efforts of the players.

  73. JC

Serena’s having a bad reaction to the gender reassignment drugs he’s been taking. Saying stupid shit is one of the adverse effects.

I did wonder how he had been received, thank you.

  75. Mark A

Feel sorry for the losers, but Storm was and is an excellent team.
Took chicanery to rob them from their success before.

  76. J.H.

Ah well, the Cowboys scored one more try against the Storm than the Broncos did….. 😉

  77. Ah well, the Cowboys scored one more try against the Storm than the Broncos did

Ah hahah hahahha haa haa……. hahahaah….. hahahahahah….. haha!

  78. Serena’s having a bad reaction to the gender reassignment drugs he’s been taking. Saying stupid shit is one of the adverse effects.

Nay. It is only a rumour that I’m hankering to become a bloke. I’m staying with the strength.
None of which lets off the NQ unethical Cowboys. I’m schadenfreuding over their loss.
Big $$ right now in the oft-forgotten aspect of a pub, the bar. Half the town is drowing their sorrows. Heh!

As usual, the brewery wins the match!

  79. ssr

Listening to the commentators who’ve tried to ignore and play down Storm’s many outstanding records, finally, grudgingly admit they have to be ‘in the running for the best club‘, is more than I expected from them, so that was good.

Seeing cats preferring to keep bitching about NRL/Govt SS’m’ politics than to have the grace to acknowledge Storm’s well earned extra entry in the record books, I find quite sad, particularly considering all those Storm players kids out on the field with their loving Dads, being one of the quietest, yet most powerful and memorable ads For The NO Vote.

They weren’t just League’s champions, they were the champions of the natural family, when we really needed them.

  80. They weren’t just League’s champions, they were the champions of the natural family, when we really needed them.

    Interesting viewpoint.
Storm is also the only club with colours anybody is able to remember. (‘ceptin people who actually watch Rugby League).

  81. Mr. Bellamy can finally get that long drawn look off his face anyway. He was feeling rather low there for a while, a couple of years back. Understandably so.

  82. ssr

I’m sorry for you didn’t get your fairytale ending yesterday, Fergus, but at least I’m sure you can be happy about Storm having the last, and lasting say, against the fairy pushing NRL.

That field full of loving Dads and the kids who love them, after the final siren, was the loudest ‘silent protest‘ For Natural Fatherhood anyone could of made, and like everything Storm do, they did it with pure class.

Everywhere the cameras pointed, there was a another Storm player, proudly, naturally holding his child as what they are, Better Than Any Trophy Ever! … even the NRL Grand Final Trophy 😉 🙂

So please excuse me while I make up for the lack of sporting good will shown us Stormers, and repeat –

    KIDS NEED DADS!

REAL MEN MAKE THE BEST DADS!

THANK YOU MELBOURNE STORM for continuing to be THE GREATEST CHAMPIONS,
long after the final siren 🙂

It’s Better than O.K. to Vote NO. It’s Champion! 🙂
